Festive Greetings!

This female Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree) tree was covered in seasonal decorations - fruit. Amazingly this tree species has existed longer than the Atlantic Ocean, it is often known as the ‘fossil tree’.

A display by Plant Heritage at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, UK, showed the diversity of the cultivars of Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree) and the species survival over geological time. One of my favourite facts is that this tree species has existed longer than the Atlantic Ocean. The collection holder, Tony Davies, has at least 200 cultivars and the collection is still expanding.

A picture from a few years ago of ginkgo. I really like the colors. Ginkgo is a traditional remedy for phlegm, which can include physical mucus and some other dysfunctions as well. In modern times people mostly use it for circulation and nerve function. A lot of the ginkgo out there is concentrated, containing for instance 50 grams of ginkgo per gram of finished extract. . . . .In the last half a century or so, there have been lots (dozens, maybe hundreds) of clinical trials involving ginkgo. One meta analysis of 9 clinical trials lasting at least 12 weeks, found that ginkgo had a clinically significant effect on cognitive function in people with dementia. Another meta analysis of 15 trials found that it didn't have a big effect on cognitive function in healthy people hnder 60. . . . An interesting thing about this type of tree is that it's not closely related to any other type of tree alive today. You can find ginkgo leaf type fossils from hundreds of millions of years ago, but at some point all the other plants related to it died off. I have heard that ginkgo biloba also became extinct in the wild and was kept alive in captivity at monasteries in Asia, until such time as it became a popular medicinal and ornamental plant. . . . . #ginkgo #maidenhairtree #tree #fallcolors
