dany was so broken in agot, physically and mentally. she was ready to kill herself to escape drogo. her childhood had been a long unfortunate series of running away from the alleged monsters that killed her family and left her exiled and desperately trying to appease her abusive brother/guardian.

but then, after she's resolved herself to suicide, she has a dream. and then, she starts to notice the beauty in the new world around her. how the dothraki grass sea swallowed her up, the new sights and sounds and smells all around. she found solace in the people, she ate with them, learned their language in a matter of months, enjoyed their food. felt freer in dothraki riding clothes than in the fine silks ilyrio had dressed her up in.

I'm still deeply touched everytime I read about dany giggling, joking around, moving forward, hugging her friends, leading, and fighting after enduring so much. it's not about her being right in everything she does or everything ending well for her. she went through hell, was already going through it before the series even started, and she kept going. she grows and fights and fucks and laughs and cries and rages. she falls and she gets right back up again.

dany is ready to end her own life. the next day, she notices how pretty the sky is. she learns a few more dothraki words everyday and starts to connect more with those around her. she tries some new foods and starts to feel more comfortable on her horse.

the dragon dream certainly did Something to dany - a scarlet and black dragon (drogon, balerion come again) baptizing her in flame. scouring her, tempering her, making her clean. after this, dany makes the quiet choice to live. there is no grand revelation, no "i want to live!" monologue. she simply starts to notice the beauty in the world she's traveling through, the loyalty and easy comradery in her companions, the tasty food and comfortable clothes. dothraki smells, horse smells. riding leather, painted vests, the gently singing bells braided through hair. dany chooses life everytime she giggles, everytime she tries a new food or convinces her friends to try one, everytime she stops to stare at a pretty sight.

she was ready to choose death and she chose life. when her entire world had narrowed to the scope of her pain, to the strength of her abusers, to the golden collar drogo had put around her neck - she still chose life. and just like that, her world expanded and she could see all that was worth living for.

the thing about each pjo book is that each of them is uniquely the best in what it sets out to do. each is so monumental in what the story ends up amounting to, picking a favorite is almost like pointless. you could not have all 5 work so well if one was missing

#tlt introduces the world and the main trio and the main antagonist #fun adventure in wacky world. normal #som piggybacks off the already established status quo of the world (fun wacky adventure) and builds relationships upon it #explores characters more. more introspection from percy and a lot raised (and answered) about annabeth #plus solidifying percy's bond w grover #ttc was my least fav for a long time because it just felt like idk off #and i now think it's bc it's where the story pivots a bit and becomes more serious #it's still v much haha fun adventure bc it's children's lit after all. but it is once again meant to solidify #percy's bond w annabeth; percy's devotion to chb and his feelings towards the prophecy #as well as being the climax of thalia's character and kind of settling the fact luke really is evil and doing some real shit #exemplified by the fact this is the first book where protags die #and thalia pretty much kills luke. like he doesn't die but she couldn't have known he wouldn't die #so percy now REALLY has an idea of what he's up against #notice how the following two books really couldn't have happened w/o this kind of certification from him #botl is like. AHHHHHHHHHH it is my fav for a reason #i just really love how it doesn't lose the footing w the pace and the fun hijinks but still manages to deepen the relationships between #the characters #especially with the focus on percy's feelings towards nico and annabeth's towards luke #like *chef's kiss* that book is so fucking good please #and with a foundation so strong there really was no way tlo could have been bad lmao #but still the fact the book takes time from Teh Final Confrotation vibes of it all #to make a point to show percy going back to his mom's. luke going back to may's. hestia's presence in the middle of all of it #rick was like this series has a theme and i will show it to you NAOW #and the action scenes in this one??? I drew something for TBoCI for the first time in what feels like forever even though it’s only been a month

Something something AU where instead of sending each kid to the Magical Islands FT keeps all them with him and Perry as well so they ALL end up on Cold Island pre-collapse… Alternatively here’s four canon characters and two fanmade characters, guess whos who (all of that was sarcasm)

In other words I decided I will starting this over from the ground-up. It’s been over a year and my motivation is finally, FINALLY back. I will be keeping all of the current stuff on @theballadofcoldisland but that ask blog is officially shut down and is now just an archive.

Instead of being one long and strange story that only focuses on characters that honestly have nothing to do with the title, I will split TBoCI into several smaller stories that give a MUCH better insight on the motivations, groups, and the like. I will inevitably share the original files, drafts, and ideas.

This is the part where I get somewhat emotional and sincere apologies in advance to plushii, who I might mention in there. All good things, my friend. All good things.

I think this is the best course of action. There are a lot of characters in this story that despite being incredibly important, are not addressed properly or not at all until the last chapter that only exists in my notes. I mean… A massive amount of this story has only been discussed in a discord chat with a person I cannot contact anymore. It’s a massive mess of an idea that sounds stupider everytime I think of it.

And then a long while ago now, I was on Pony Town and talking to a friend I has just made. I distinctly remember they were in a Celestial skin. I think at some point they’d asked what “TBoCI” meant in my name, and I explained my story to them. They said they were writing a fanstory for MSM as well. I encouraged them to post it.

Now I daily see wonderful, wonderful content for that story, both from the creator and the fans. I finally understood what I did wrong. TBoCI was incoherent and messy where Fallen Stars was clean and consistent. I had so much in my mind that I had spilled it all out to One Person, and now there exists only two people in the world who know who the hell Kane is (possibly only one person now)!

What I’m trying to say is, in short, thanks @plushii-gutz . There’s a few factors to me being able to write TBoCI again, but you’re definitely the biggest part of that. Our encounter was a blessing.

And to everyone, please look forward to a much smoother ride. This is a fun one.

Finally got around to designing some of the oldest members of the og magic cat world story, yknow only took me like 5 years fhfksgkfg

#keese draws #oc posting #oc art #oc #ocs #ok ok tbf all of them had concept designs I had doodled over the past several years but I never actually sat down to draw them properly #but yeah the first is sharp she’s the 4th member of the main ‘protags’ in the seth ari and flutter crew #she’s also a crusty old warcriminal woman so boo and throw tomatoes at her #ok it’s technically more complicated than that but not by much #basically she joined a government agency with her girlfriend to ~tear it down from the inside~ or whatever #but she ended up gutting like all of her morals to climb the ranks and is currently sitting in ‘it’s not the right time’ limbo #she is currently the mentor of the other three and her whole arc is her just being like oh god right morals #and eventually being abandoned by everyone and everything as the consequences of her actions hit #and she realizes that she was always doomed to fail since she was trying to play by the systems rules to break it down #anyways the doggy is shaded and she’s flutter’s girlfriend #shaded got dragged into the main conflict between these two governments after running away from home and dying #she had been rescued by the third character and after she was brought back with the goop™️ ruby put a good word in for her and got shaded #out of the goop gang and took her on as an apprentice #ruby is ofc the last one and she was the girlfriend that joined with sharp to tear down the government #she had been trying to make connections with those she knew were working against the government but after sharp found out abt this she #got told on but hey wow how merciful of sharp she painted it as an accident caused by neglegance so Ruby only got her life %90 ruined #<- sarcasm btw ruby was still put through years of grueling investigation and was fired and had her reputation ruined #so when the guy who I still need to design but he’s like super important trust me was like hey wanna burn ur ex #so she got some magic woo but bad news she’s sort of locked herself into working for a different shitty government #so some lore background in the non magic world there’s a very very large country that controls the entire continent they live on #and when the magic world and the non magic world started colliding more they were all like sick more territory #but while they were still in the planning phase their ambassadors performed a coup and took over and colonized the place for themselves #this was all about 70-90 years ago in world history #so now the goverment controlling the largest magic world kingdom and the goverment in the non magic world country that wanted the land are #in a very slow and so far mostly small scale slap fight as they play a game of chicken

How do you feel about Ash Ketchum (aka World Champion) retiring from the anime soon?

Very bittersweet :’) On one hand it’s really difficult letting go of a core piece of my childhood, on the other I think we’ve seen p much everything there is to see from Ash’s journey and it’s at a very good stopping point now, so I’m comfortable with his story ending here.

I’m actually very excited to see which direction they go in with the SV anime, and since I absolutely adore SV’s story I really hope they adapt all of that in the new season. It sucks we won’t be able to experience that with Ash but that boy’s been carrying us long enough, I think it’s time he finally gets some rest

#Shima answers questions #I know a lot of people who have wanted a new protag for YEARS so I’m sure they’re pleased about it #There’s only so much you can do with a character before the formula gets repetitive and boring. You know?#Ash has fulfilled all his goals and we’ve seen him in every situation imaginable #So instead of beating the horse even after it’s dead. I’m glad they’re letting him go here #His journey ended on a really high note and that’s all I could ask from them #I don’t want to see this become a ‘Well the show is popular so we’ll keep making episodes with the same characters’ thing so #Journeys was Ash’s last hurrah. His final go at being a main character #And they did such a good job with him #I really think his ‘maturity’ arc happened throughout Kalos and Alola #So by the time Journeys happened we’d already seen him fully developed as a character #So it was a good way to end his journey. As a bird demon, I think Gekkouin has a lot more potential that Kagami didn't explore before kind of pushing him to the side(?). When I saw the chapter where Gekkouin was fighting with the other Shinoa Squad's black demons, he only used very generic attacks that seems to be any attacks that demons could use? Which personally feels like a waste, considering Kiseki-o and Asuramaru were able to exercise their own powers during the fight against Yuu.

I think it would've been cool if he made use of more bird-themed abilities, like even something as simple as using his wings to throw Yuu off-balance during the fight would've pose some form of challenge. After all, even the most formidable swordsmen would waver if they loose their footing.

Also, a rlly cool ability i read somewhere, like a peacock's shrill? or peacock cry? An ability that agitates or grabs the opponents' attention, thereby limiting their ability to tunnel vision?? LIKE THATS SUPER COOL and could've made Gekk so much cooler?? I mean, yeah he would still get beat up but at least it goes to show that the black demons aren't exactly weak either??

Like yes, he is a side character and yes, he probably shouldn't be 'invested' in so much. But if a side character doesnt prove any sort of challenge or support to the main character, then he might as well not be there in the first place.

I sure do. Long long ago when SMT//Imagine was still novelty me and my roleplaying crew at the time decided to make a roleplay guild called Clan Volatile. Because these fuckers were all ticking time bombs in their own right.

My ticking timebomb of choice was a young man called Dastolle Kobayashi, the resident clan tank and horribly abused workhorse.

So for those of you not in the know, SMT Imagine was an MMO set in the interrim between SMT1 and SMT2. My roleplay group at the time decided to set up an rp guild in the game, exploring the first generations of humans who wouldn't remember the days before the nuclear fallout of SMT1. None of them would survive to make it to SMT2, which was also part of the concept. Having a good ol' look at those people who perished when things started to get ugly again.

He's a sweet guy, if not the smartest... though he's still smarter than people give him credit for. Unfourtunately he's also incredibly traumatised and suffer from intense amounts of anger (secret) that's being kept in check only by his intense fear of abandonment (Apparent to anyone with eyes).

He's unquestionably loyal to his clan. Why? Because he doesn't trust his own judgement on who he can trust or not - and his departed mentor promised him that these people would be his friends.

It... didn't go so well. He's the "best friend" of an incredibly abusive clan leader who's sanity is probably compromised by his demon fusion wings (remember the freaky lore with the demon accessories?) and something of a (rather objectifying) interest to said leader's twin sister.

They're all C-rank demon busters, so only in the about level 20s or so. Real nobodies doing grunt work that noone has time to keep much of an eye on. They can survive, and that's good enough.

He doesn't like books (they're religious items that steal people away) and may or may not be trying to burn a clanmate's bible without him finding out. He's staunchely neutral due to both his parents leaving him for each their faction when he was younger, and mostly uses beast demons. They're nice and simple. His primary demon is a fire-breathing unicorn who likes to mess with people and has a narcisism problem.

He took up smithing as a secondary clan-job. He mostly makes swords for their leader, he likes his hammer.

I also had a cool thing going where I had reaction images drawn both with and without the visor that let ME know when he was being mildly deranged under the cover of the visor, but other people wouldn't tell because they couldn't see his eyes. There was a lot of interesting psychology going on with him.

Dastolle is a docile guy who works hard to try and ensure his "friends" won't abandon him out of an extreme fear of being alone again. It's the only thing keeping an increasingly boiling anger down.... for now. But he's got a dark and bloody future ahead of him.

These guys are nobodies noone will remember.#Dastolle was Ippon-Datara #Fated to go mad at being abandoned a second time and turning into a murderous craftsman living alone in a cave #crafting neutral-alignment only weapons until the day his former ''best friend'' kills him #He takes out the guy's prized wings in the process though.#I've also roleplayed as the SMT1 protag since the early 2000s and the regular demon team are sort of oc's in their own right now.#Dastolle's favourite things are related to nature and he likes to take refuge in Nakano when there's nothing to do.#He also accidentally ate a demon apple once and got possessed once #It was kind of a running theme with him that nothing about his situation was ok #But everyone were too busy with basic survival to do anything about it.#So nothing was done before he finally went nuclear.#The whole Clan's story was a psychological tragedy of preventable dooms noone cared to prevent #Doomed by the narrative etc etc #High defence zero brains #Ironically the two people closest to him were the only ones with high enough attack to make anything hurt #The visor belonged tot he demon buster who saved him and also introduced him to his 'friends'#The anger being hidden behind the damaged visor was deeply symbolic about the fear and the promise being the only things hiding it #keeping it locked away

this is kind of me still marveling at that i can make gifs that look like this now but also i am just. thinking thinking thinking about how Afraid of salazar henry is, is all. what a flinch. he didn't even see salazar kill anyone he just Knows that he did and the rest is the immense vibes of Bad coming off this thing that is entirely too far into his personal space at all times

#many things this movie does w/ salazar that i don't enjoy.#i DO think it's really interesting that there are exactly zero junctures at which henry isn't petrified of him #a lot of like modern (late 2010s-forward) blockbusters tend to have this aura of quippy one-liners right #which dmtnt absolutely falls prey to i'm not saying it doesn't #but one key difference (to me) is how many of those other movies will have their plucky action guys like #attempt banter or undercut the villain by just. being immune to their presence?#which works in some movies!/with some protags! absolutely some movies do perfectly well with heroes who just #spoil the Drama of it all you know? it's definitely a potentially functional trope #but it's became so common it was like. it's expected now almost? and so many action heroes just #do not give their villains due credit for being like. serial murderers or genocidal war criminals or figures of mass destruction you know?#like *we* know they're the main character and probably aren't going to die in the first (checks notes) fifteen minutes of the movie #but *they* shouldn't (always) be cognizant of their plot armor #so i just. really think its neat that at every turn any time salazar is on screen or someone mentions him henry goes a little pale and look #like he would rather be talking about something else #that's all #dreaming up things to say & never quite saying them ( my edit. )#oh maybe #blood tw #i'm sorry i forgot to tag first go

#low bar but ive watched a lot of music anime where they just play the song as is every time #so i rly appreciate when they commit to this level of detail #fuckign watch bocchi the rock !!!!! it slaps!!!!!! super hard!!!!!! and the songs are Peak kisses fingers #retag later #ani blogging #the only music anime ive ever felt truly blown away by in terms of story-driven details in the music #is those snow white notes #it involves a lot of the same song being played over and over again and u can genuinely hear the differences every time #esp w an instrument i knew almost nothing about (shamisen) going into it like. it's insane #the first time the prestigious pro comes in and u hear him play and all the characters are blown away by the quality of his sound #u can /genuinely/ hear what they mean theres such a strong clear quality to his playing and it fucking RULES #when the main character is messing up and his notes are getting muddy u can hear the difference #when theyre struggling to play together as a unit it's v clear theyre all off like. again: It's Insane #dont get me started on the competition and all the distinct versions of the same fucking song #how flashy the other schools' arrangements are and how plain and simple the protag's group is in comparison #GOD it's so fucking good they went balls to the fuckin walls with that anime and it pays tf off!!!!!#(now s2 when 😔)#also correction: i forgot abt hibike euphonium 👌👌👌💯💯💯/10 #reina's solo in s1 compared to that 3rd year's version of the same solo OOOOOOOG #i gotta rewatch that anime again ITS TIME.........

i literally never post of my own volition but i noticed yesterday that ao3 canonised the unbound character tags so now i am excitedly running around in circles because the. the . the tags i am lovingly fostering exist. I MADE THESE TAGS WITH MY OWN TWO HANDS.

the funniest thing about this is that "protagonist's name is fern!" links to the francis character tag... i am sorry... for changing his name.......

the general unbound fandom tag is under pokemon fan games which is understandable. but i am so. i am soooooo fucking happy about this. fuck.
