44 - Cheap (Featuring @halsin's sweet girl Mairwen <33)

“Well?” Mairwen prompts, her tone soft in that uncertain way she has. And while the dress is sitting beautifully on, the soft pink of it so distinctly her, there’s something else to it that catches Victoria’s eye. A fault so obvious now she wonders how she ever missed it.

“It’s an imitation.” She hums, pressing impolitely close to rub the material between her forefinger and thumb. There’s an insulted gasp from behind, a sharp draw of air no doubt followed by a fury passing features. Mairwen’s own drawn breath demands her attention more readily, the woman tensing when golden optics flick up to regard her.

“It’s…” Hesitation. Victoria really ought to teach her to not be so obvious in her veering thoughts, the thread of her mind easily traced through the avoidant gaze and minute bite of a lip. “It’s more in my price range.”

Ah, that explains it. Rolling her eyes, the netrunner flicks the grainy material free from her hold. “I told you this was on me.”

“But still—”

“Mairwen.” She interrupts, tone softer than it’d usually be with someone pricking at her pride so blatantly but she noted early that the younger woman learned better with a gentle hand, cowering away from anything sharp. Anything that held obvious displeasure. So she douses her tongue in honey and lets the sweetness dull the bitter edge of her words. “Are you asking me to waste my money on cheap shit?”

“I’m- no! Not at all but—”

“Good.” A soft ding rings through as Victoria clasps her two hands together, a pretty tolling bell for a short-lived argument. She doesn’t even look over her shoulder to order their shopping assistant: “Bring her in the real thing, the one with actual pearls.” Instead, her eyes remain fixed on Mairwen’s in a quiet dare to protest.

None are offered.

For some info on her outfit choice: I wanted to do an outfit that was a mix of European and Mughal fashion during the Golden Age of Piracy. She’s wearing a European style frock coat, boots, and a not-visible bastian shirt., with a jama coat that’s been [messily] cut off at the hips, worn without sleeves to emulate a waist coast, with dhoti style pants [the exact design of them is more modern/ anachronistic than what would have been worn], and the specific type of sword she’s wielding is a Tulwar. 

The colours are taken from historical art and fashion plates. Blues, reds, and yellows were popular during the 1710s in Europe [darker and more muted colours were more common in the colonies], while green, yellow, and white were some popular colours choices during the Mughal period.

I used some new brushes from Clip Studio [including the braid and the fabric prints] since I wanted to play around with my new tablet.

Mairwen; Pre-Canon [Influences]

In Mairwen’s very first incarnation, she was the protagonist for a fantasy novel set in my own original world. Her first name was actually Branwen and she looked very different, being completely albino. The plot for that novel was that she was an “Exiled”, part of a group of people who were very secretive, living in seclusion due to the nature of their magic. They were so secretive in fact, that leaving the community was all but forbidden and being exiled was reserved for the worst offenders. 

Being exiled in their community meant receiving a [magic] tattoo and having your memories erased before being pushed out into the outside world. Most people outside the community recognized the implications of the tattoo and were not friendly to those who were Exiled. 

Her very first story was about her trying to find somewhere to call home, arriving in a town known as “the city of outcasts” and discovering that the town wasn’t exactly as advertised and hid a dangerous secret. 

From there, her story continued so that she travelled with her horse as her only companion until someone from her community, also with the mark of someone exiled, came looking for her. He had his many of his memories, however, and knew her. The two set out to discover what led to their banishment and the hints of corruption underneath.

This origin has influenced a lot of her creation and backstory in the rest of her incarnations and might be big part of why she might seem a bit OP in some verses compared to others: I don’t want to nerf her when moving her just to avoid her seeming like a “mary sue” because, well, this is for fun.
