Uncharismatic Fact of the Day

Most birds take at least a few weeks to learn how to fly, if not longer. The maleo, however, is a bird far ahead of the game. This species buries its eggs deep underground, and after the chicks hatch they dig their way to the surface and are able to fly almost immediately.

Maleo (Macrocephalon maleo)

The Maleo lays eggs, about five times the size of a domestic chicken, in a deep hole in sand on the island of Sulawesi. After hatching, the young birds dig their way up through the sand, and are immediately able to fly and feed themselves, being completely self-sufficient only hours after hatching. The hot sand acts as an incubator for the eggs.

tw rarepair week 23: day 4, only one bed theo/malia

Malia wakes up to the smell of pain first, then the sound of light sobs, they come from the body next to her. She turns over as carefully as she can, not wanting to startle Theo too much.

They’re staying at hotel just outside of Beacon Hills after dealing with a rouge group of hunters, Derek and Peter were supposed to help them but something popped up back in Beacon Hills so it’s just them. Theo had tried to get a room with two beds but they had shown up too late for anything but the stale smelling room they’re in now. Malia hadn’t minded that she had to stay in the same bed as Theo, they’ve done it before, months into being the main protectors of Beacon Hills since the rest of the pack went off to college and the pair have become closer.

Another cry pulls Malia back to Theo. He’s curled in on himself, his heartbeat telling Malia that he’s at least awake and not stuck in a horrid nightmare that she’s seen him have a few times now. She takes a moment before moving a hesitant hand onto the middle of Theo’s back, feeling how he goes rigid a moment but quickly relaxes into her touch.

“Theo? You alright?” The answer is clear by the tear tracks stained down his cheeks and ragged breaths he takes in. Malias chest aches as she shifts to be in front of Theo, cradling his cheeks to softly wipe away the stray tears still slipping down Theo’s skin.

“I just— I can’t sleep.” It’s a little mumbled and all Malia can do is nod, forcing Theo to talk wouldn’t help either of them. She wouldn’t want to anyways, they have an unspoken agreement that they won’t push either into talking or discussing hard topics, it’s why it’s so easy to be vulnerable with him.

“Just breathe, I’m right here.” Theo puts up no fight when Malia pulls him into her chest, tucking his head under her chin as his arms wrap around her middle.

“Malia?” She hums lowly

“Do you ever miss when you’d sleep in your den?” The question takes Malia off guard, she tips her head till her eyes meet Theo’s wide ones. There’s a glint of hope behind them, something that’s waiting for a certain answer.

“Sometimes. I like being human, and I like being in a house, but sometimes I miss the feeling of my old den.” Theo presses a soft kiss to Malias cheek when her voice wobbles the smallest amount. Anyone but Theo wouldn’t catch it, even another supernatural creature wouldn’t be able to pick up on the shift, but Theo does. He always does. Malia hadn’t noticed it till a couple months ago but Theo knows her better than anyone else, they’ve bonded deeper than she ever expected them to.

And nobody else would’ve kissed Malia so tenderly, so simply. It doesn’t feel pressured or hungry or awkward, it’s just them. Theo and Malia, in a moment where nobody else matters, nobody’s opinions on them or anyone else’s feelings matter; they’re free to be themselves.

“I miss sleeping in the woods, when I’d run from the doctors I’d shift and stay in the woods to hide from them. It was nice— not just to be away from them— but to see the stars and be in my wolf form.” Malias heard tidbits about Theo’s time under the dread doctors control and how when things got extra bad he’d run away. They always found him, it might’ve taken a few days, but the doctors always got him back. It still makes Malia feel sick when she thinks about it.

“We could go out to the woods now.” She says because it seems like the logical thing to do, the hunters they were dealing with are shipped off to jail for trying to shoot Theo, there’s no other threats in the area, and nobody else in the pack to be concerned about.

“Are you sure?” The need to ask if she’s being serious is unnecessary, Theo knows, and she knows he knows.

“Let’s go.”

After Theo slips the card for the hotels door under the small doormat for them to grab later, and Malia’s able to get them into a clear part of the woods, they shift. Malia can smell the relief pouring off of Theo, and the ease in his eyes makes Malia smile.

It takes a second for Malia to get used to the feeling of her coyote form again. She stretches her limbs out, coming up behind Theo to nudge her snout against the side of his face, getting him to lick at her with a content nuzzle of his face. Theo leads Malia over to a tree, soft leaves and grass poking through where Theo curls up. Malia lays behind him, almost covering half of him, protecting him in a way, she listens as his heartbeat slows with exhaustion.

The stars shine when her eyes lift, the tree tops move slightly with the summer breeze flowing through the air. She can feel her eyes flutter with the feeling of Theo’s breathing under her, she lets them, they’ll both sleep better out here.

What are your favourite ships with Theo?

Thiam is always a good time. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if the show explored more of Theo and Stiles. I don’t know why but I think that dynamic would have been funny had it developed more. I also think the tension between Theo and Malia was kinda hot. I wouldn’t have minded that developing more too. So Thiam, Steo & Maleo.

Whump Fic Requests

"I got stuck in these more often than I'm proud of," Malia says, sitting by Theo and scanning the trap where his right foot is currently still trapped. Shifting back to human had just made it worse. It should have been a simple matter after he had hands again.

Instead, pain radiates from ankle, and the smell of blood has him wavering between intellect and instinct in a way that is.. not comfortable.

Malia presses two buttons, and it unclamps enough for him to get free.

"How did you find me?" Theo growls as the bones of his crushed leg and foot begin the healing process with audible crunches.

"You might try, "'thank you, Malia for rescuing me even though this pain is the least I deserve for everything I've ever put you through.'"

Theo winces. From the pain as he heals. And the truth in her statement.

Something in her responds to his inability to answer, and she sighs. "I was out hunting. As a coyote. And I heard you scream."

"I didn't scream."

Malia shrugs. "I heard what I heard. But if you want, I can put you back in and pretend I didn't."

Theo stands, places the wait on his healed foot gingerly. "I guess I should be glad you heard me."

Malia's eyes rake over every inch of him, reminding him that he's naked. And that she is, too.

"Like what you see?"

Malia hmms in something that he chooses to interpret as approval. She grins at him. "You clearly do."

Theo shrugs. "A valid response to pleasant visual stimuli."

Malia. "Do you want to fuck me or not, Raeken? Because there's no..."

Theo steps forward and kisses her before she can finish her sentence.
