Could you expand on the grocery stores thing?

I was gonna be like “sure have an essay about my issues with grocery shopping on Adderall” but it’s remarkably difficult to talk about. I wrote like four responses to this before I was satisfied. 

If I’m in a grocery store unmedicated, I have coping mechanisms -- I have a list, a mental map of the store, ways of determining what to buy based on options. I’ve had a lot of time to develop technique. In the months before the pandemic, when I unexpectedly began earning a middle class salary, I was even working on relaxing my budget so that I wasn’t wearing myself out wondering if $1 extra for nicer potato chips was worth it. 

But if I’ve taken an Adderall within three hours of a shopping trip, suddenly my coping mechanisms, even the Hey I Have Money Now one, don’t fit my new behavior patterns. 

I am capable of spending more time figuring out what I want because I can compare similar items and hold details and prices in my head, but that’s not necessarily a good thing. The longer I stay in one place the higher odds I’m in the way of other shoppers and I hate being in the way. Meanwhile, I can remember things I didn’t put on the list, but I’m so thrilled to be buying food I didn’t realize I needed that I don’t remember to make sure all of it will fit in the bag I brought to carry it home in. I can also browse, which is not something I normally could do, but I get frustrated browsing because I expect to find something cool and most groceries are not cool. Browsing is highly overrated and yet so irresistibly novel!  

This isn’t a problem with most tasks, because most tasks don’t involve the amount of sensory input, decision-making, and public presence that grocery shopping does. Even restaurants have a place to sit and a list to choose from. 

So my options are to shop unmedicated, where my coping mechanisms exist but my experience is subpar, or to shop medicated, where in theory eventually I would buy better food, spend less, and carry a lighter mental load -- but where I have zero skills to actually handle the experience. 

It’s okay. I’m learning new skills. I’m giving myself permission to be in peoples’ way, because fuck knows nobody in the grocery store is willing to get out of my way. I add an extra bag to my backpack so that I have a comfortable way to carry what won’t fit. I sometimes check the online inventory of the store before I go so that I know I’m not missing anything fun. If I get tired and I haven’t found everything yet, I buy what I’ve got and leave and remind myself that the Adderall will also allow me to come back tomorrow and buy the rest. I buy myself a Diet Coke to drink on the walk home as a treat regardless of how successful I was.  

But yeah, the problem with Better Living Through Chemistry is that sometimes you’re wholly unprepared for life to be better. Tough to know how to polish diamonds when you’re used to scrubbing floors.

About reading fic on YouTube: I have not investigated this in the notes at all but I do remember years ago (2006-2008ish) seeing some rpf "stories" on YouTube that were mostly text of bad dialogue over pictures of the actors, so maybe that's what they mean? I watched part of two of those videos and noped out but I saw that there were a lot of them.

I have no idea if that's what the poll means though.

That is wild LOL. The only other way I could imagine fics on youtube is if someone uploaded podfics there.

For a long time now, it's been impossible to see comments or reblogs with comment/tags on posts over a certain age when using the mobile app or blog view. Today I was looking at a post from 2015 that I knew had at least one reblog comment and lots of tags, but all the reblogs were under "other". I found the comment (but couldn't see any tags) by going to the [blog name].tumblr.com/post/[###] link and scrolling through all the notes in one list, but it's impossible anywhere else.

I know this probably has to do with the many changes Tumblr has gone through in that time, but it's still really inconvenient to have disappearing notes on the platform where part of the charm is that posts can survive for, at this point, almost a decade and a half.

Is it even possible to fix this, and of so, is it something you would consider?

It is possible to fix this, and we would like to fix it, but it’s a daunting problem at Tumblr’s scale. Buckle up for storytime.

Long, long ago, Tumblr was created, and in the beginning, there weren’t even notes on posts. There weren’t even reblogs or likes. In fact, we were one of the first platforms to introduce the heart icon and the concept of “likes”! We created the reblog! Back in those days, each of these actions were tracked separately. Likes were tracked in one database table and reblogs weren’t tracked at all as notes. When we introduced replies, those had yet another way of being tracked in our database. Totally separate entities on the platform for years.

Eventually, we wanted to consolidate these into one number—so we had to count each of those different places. That’s horribly inefficient, and as Tumblr grew in size and popularity, this became a bottleneck that hurt the whole platform. So one of the things we did was to invent a new denormalized database table called “notes,” to track all of these different things in one place so we could easily count them. We still have that table, and it’s still the fallback whenever we need to count the notes on a post.

But this itself is ancient history. Since then, the product has changed even more, and we removed replies and re-added them later, back in 2015 or so—and made some changes in that process to help further improve efficiency. These improvements allowed us to include media in the notes view, and be able to split out replies versus reblogs-with-comment versus likes (kind of going back to the way it was originally.) Even then, we didn’t yet support showing tag usage in the notes—that would come even later.

In the process of making all of these changes for efficiency and functionality, we had to ask ourselves, as you point out: should we try to backfill these new database tables with all of the data from before? For a long while, we were using both systems to power the notes view, so we could display as much information from “before” as we could. Eventually, we didn’t need to do that anymore, because the number of people scrolling back to that “before” time became infinitesimally small. And that's the situation we’re in today.

Because if we wanted to backfill the data, we would need to process literally tens of billions of posts and notes from before 2015, at a conservative estimate. Let’s say it’s 10,000,000,000, for the sake of argument: if we started an automated process to go through them at ~100 per second (which would be relatively safe at our scale, so Tumblr doesn’t break as we’re digging up these old rows in the database), it would take over three years of continuous operation to complete that task.

In situations like this, we have to ask ourselves if that’s worth it. So far, the answer we’ve determined is no. But we may find a more efficient way to do it, there’s undoubtedly a way, and when we do, we will re-evaluate the decision again. We hope that makes sense—trying to make changes to Tumblr can be really, really hard.

I was tagged by @come-chaos. It’s been a minute since I’ve done one of these things!

First Ship: Ash and Misty from Pokémon. I used to make up little fanfics in my head about them. I was a bit embarrassed about it at the time, because kissing and love were supposed to be yucky (I was six, okay).

Three Ships: Just three?! Hunter/Tech, Sid/Andy, and Kylo/Hux. Kylux has an amazing fandom, HunTech has a really sweet, underrated dynamic, and SidAndy is classic “opposites attract”. I can evangelize about these ships further if you jump into my ask box, lol.

There just isn't enough Codex these days. Let's kick it back to the OG gay clones, shall we?

1. What’s a random headcanon you have about either of the characters, and how does it play into their relationship?

Cody loves the stars. He can name each of them in every system and the stories behind every single constellation in the galaxy. When Cody needs time alone to sort things out in his head, Rex can always find him on the observation deck on the Negotiator, sitting with his knees pulled up to his chest and looking out at the stars as they go by.

2. Do they have nicknames for each other?

Cody calls Rex “cyar’ika”, and Rex, despite being the younger of the two of them, calls Cody “Cod’ika.”

3. What song(s) fit this pairing the best?

“Far Too Young To Die” by Panic! At the Disco

4. If you were to take these characters and plop them into another fandom, what fandom would you put them in and why?

Ooh, I do have my share of AUs with them, but maybe a Final Fantasy, specifically Final Fantasy IX, considering the cloning aspect of the game’s plot. Ooh, yeah that’s fun to play with…

5. What tattoos do they have? (Canon or not canon)

Cody has “Kote” written in arubesh from his chest to his naval. Rex has jaig eyes flanking his naval and over his hips.

6. How does one react to finding out the other is dead?

Neither would take it well. They would both hide it inwardly, and Rex might shed a tear or two in front of his General, but behind closed doors both of them would scream and fall apart. It would be absolute agony for them.

Cody would blame himself for not being there, go over everything over and over again to find the flaw in the plan.

As for Rex, I feel like he’d abandon the GAR. Without Cody, he has nothing to fight for anymore. He doesn’t want to fight for a galaxy that Cody isn’t in.

7. How often do they stare lovingly at the other?

As often as time will allow them. They’re so stupidly in love and giddy about it.

8. Do they send the other loving/cutesy messages?

All. The. Time. Rex is a sap and sends Cody little messages anytime he has some free time and they’re apart. Cody pretends like it annoys him, but it really makes his heart skip a beat reading Rex’s messages.

9. How do they make the other laugh?

They often recount battle tails and stupid shenanigans their men get up to. Rex always has the best stories when it comes to Torrent Company, It’s secretly why Cody hasn’t given them a proper reprimand in over a year. His source of entertainment would be gone.

10. What does a date look like between these two?

Any time that they can get alone is ideal. Preferably with a hot meal and a bed, so splurging on a hotel room for a night while they’re on leave together isn’t unheard of. They’re both simple men, so a quiet walk in a park on Coruscant hand in hand or Cody taking Rex to see a bar to watch a sports game is enough for them.

11. What is their preference in position?

Rex lifted in Cody’s arms, back pressed to the wall, and legs spread. Cody likes to prove he’s still got the strength and stamina to hold Rex and fuck him senseless.

12. Do they have a particularly favorite kink they like to explore?

I’ve toyed with a lot of ideas with them, but I think my favorite is public sex, anywhere where someone can watch them. They both get off on breaking that “untouchable” vibe they give off as higher-ranking officers.

13. Which one of these two is louder?

Cody, actually, though Rex is pretty loud, too. Cody gets so into it that he can’t help the moans that tear from his throat, especially if Rex is taking control.

14. Who initiates intimacy more often?

Rex, but Cody answers in kind almost every single time.

15. What kind of intimacy is preferred between these two?

Slow and sensual sex that makes their toes curl and their loins burn with desire. Bodies pressed intimately together, skin gliding over skin, hot breath mingling as they kiss.

The first time Rex ever saw Cody - or Kote, if you went by the way he spelled it for the clout -  the current heartthrob that had all of the fangirls swooning and tripping over themselves, was through a projector screen playing a live performance of his set on a giant screen in the square. He was a bit of an older act, but no less of a hit than anyone else that was scheduled to be on the same stage throughout the event. 

The first time they met face to face, Cody was professional, kind, and gave him and the rest of Torrent Company the confidence boost they needed to perform at their first big event since the release of their debut album. He tried to ignore the fact that Cody’s hand had lingered on his own, that his speaking voice was just as melodic as the way he sang. 

The first time they bumped into each other after that was also the first time that Rex thought that maybe he liked the way that Cody smiled when they stood close together, or the way Cody would whisper in his ear about how boring sitting through makeup and wardrobe was. 

And the first time Cody kissed him was in front of a live studio audience. It wasn’t on the lips, that would be scandalous. No, instead he was just as charming as the girls who wanted him said he was. 

“Your name is Rex,” the show’s host stated. “Did you know that means ‘King’ in Latin?” 

Rex chuckled as his bandmates playfully jabbed him.

“Why do you think he’s the frontman?” Hardcase teased. 

“‘King’, huh?” Cody, who was the other guest on the show, asked from the other end of the couch, and Rex felt himself blushing as this handsome man dropped to one knee and kissed his hand. 

There were cheers and whistles, and the mixed emotions between his bandmates was hard to decipher between his ears ringing from the blood rushing to his face and all of the noise.

Oh okay that makes a lot more sense than just 'works for the Chinese government.'

I've actually pointedly stayed out of this discussion too! Because I don't feel like I have the time I want to dedicate to reading up on it. First I would want to read everything Tiffany herself has said, which on its own is I believe a lot, in addition to the thoughts of others. Plus I can't vote in this election anyway.

Hello! When I updated, my mobile dark mode (Android) is behaving oddly. Looking at ask boxes/other blogs specifically is fine, but for my dashboard or my own blog, the background is the right color but all of the posts are still light-mode colored

who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter - Keith is a hunter and Lance is part of a large, non-violent family of werewolves who mostly keep to themselves. Their paths cross when Lance gets caught up with some local idiot weres who draw a lot of attention and bring the hunters down on them. Keith inevitably is like “I’m not going to shoot you, you clearly weren’t involved what do you think I am” and Lance is like “I think you’re a literal killer” and Keith is like “that’s rich from the guy with all the teeth” and they yell at each other a lot while trying to stop the other hunters from going after Lance’s family in revenge for what the other wolves did.

who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman - This could be fun either way! Lance as mermaid is kind of a gimme, of course, and Keith could have a shack on the ocean instead of a shack in the desert. But I kind of like the idea of Keith being a mermaid, but, like, not a real one - he wasn’t born like this. He got turned into one and Lance is just a dude who likes swimming and fishing and surfing and finds Keith on the beach early one morning and tries to help him get back to normal.

who’s the witch and who’s the familiar - I’d make Keith the witch I think? Lance is like a sprite or a water elemental or something that Keith wakes up and ends up accidentally binding to himself.

who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict - Keith is the incredibly judgmental barista and Lance is the half-asleep college student who deliberately orders the most sugary, pretentious, complicated crap he can just to piss Keith off because he’s hot when he’s annoyed.

who’s the professor and who’s the TA - Hm, I’d say Keith is the flight instructor for the Academy who graduated early and got grounded after a bad wreck, so now he’s teaching students and really mad about it. Lance gets assigned to him as his TA and Lance kind of hates his guts on sight because *handwaves* reasons. Keith has no idea Lance hates him for, like, weeks. They end up actually liking each other and they bitch at each other constantly in class, which the students love. and then blah blah blah something happens and Keith has to save someone or has to walk Lance thorugh how to fly something, something, something? And then Keith is like “you have to go be someone else’s TA so I can ask you out” and Lance is like “oh hell like you’re firing me, I quit and also yes, pick me up at eight.”

who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss) - Oh Lance is totally the princess. He’s the kind of spoiled and slightly neglected youngest heir and he spends more time with the soldiers than anything else. Keith is the second in command of the guard, Shiro’s right-hand man, who pisses off the crown princess and ends up on baby-sitting duty for Lance. This works out about as well as you’d expect right up until they realize there’s some kind of conspiracy/invasion threat from the Galra and the two of them have to work together to convince the kingdom they’re in danger. Also then they get married.

who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent - Keith is the new single parent after his good friends Shiro and Allura are declared dead after their plane goes down over the ocean and Keith takes in their kid. Lance is the kid’s teacher who calls Keith after the kid (Alfie) is caught brawling in the halls for the third time in a row. They rub each other the wrong way at first, but end up working together a lot trying to help Alfie cope with losing his dad/parents and kind of start to faull for each other.

who’s the writer and who’s the editor - Keith is the writer who does a lot of writing about like... survivalism and living off the grid and shit like that, and Lance is the editor who’s never met him in person but loves his snarky emails and thinks he’s kind of mysterious and charming, but also kind of alone. And then Keith misses a deadline, and doesn’t answer his phone or emails, and Lance goes looking for him.
