Hm, I had to figure out how to interpret “comfort character” because, darn it, I have a lot of blorbos crammed into this fangirl heart of mine (I swear, my fangirl heart looks like an absolute CLOWN CAR in more ways than one 😂😉). So let’s go with 5 characters who give me great comfort whenever I write/vid/otherwise think of them. I’ll restrict it to one per fandom to make it interesting. 😛

What? Halo is one fandom with two facets, the video game and the tv series, so I felt free to, you know, shout-out my ships from both of them. C’mon, you know I LOVE MY SHIPS, Y’ALL. Ahem. 😛😇 I’ve written and vidded tv!Chief several times but have only vidded game!Chief a couple of times at this point.

3. Noble Team (Halo: Reach)

What? I love the entire team. *innocent face* 😇😇😇 And I had to include the second GIF because Jorge isn’t in the first one because he and Sara were out getting ice cream on their first date, d’aww! @ageless-aislynn commented on my last fic that Cortana needs all the hugs. I agree! And I wouldn’t be doing my job as a diligent fic writer if I didn’t ensure this happens, now would I?

This has been sitting in my head for a long time. Started with a photoshop job I saw on tumblr and can’t find anymore of the face touch scene with Cortana in Makee’s place. Ended with me seeing Aislynn’s comment, thinking “I already sort of did that in “Dust and Echoes” and then thinking “but why shouldn’t I do it again?”

I’m keeping this here for now since I miiiiiight add it or some version of it to another fic idea one day. It’s also totally overdone and self-indulgent. I rolled my eyes at myself more than once writing this. Title subject to change.

I naturally had the show in mind here, but it’s ambiguous enough to work for either universe.

There was solid ground under her face.

Cortana instinctively opened her eyes to look.

Wait. I don’t have eyes.

She blinked.

Or maybe I do.

Not just eyes. Cortana began to notice various sensations: ground under her legs, her arms, her hands. Hair brushing against her neck and face. Fabric on her body.

I have a body?

Cortana pushed herself to her knees and looked at her hands.

My hands. She flexed her fingers and ran her hands down her arms. Her jumpsuit looked the way it always had, but now it was real. Cloth and seams and thread she could touch.

Cortana lifted her hands to her face. Do I look the same? She had no way of knowing. She could feel eyes, eyebrows, eyelashes. Nose and mouth. Cheeks and jaw. Teeth and lips and tongue. Her skin felt smooth, like…like what? She had almost no basis for comparison.

Cortana brought a lock of hair in front of her eyes. Black. That’s the same. She tugged the soft strands through her fingers and let her hands move to her ears, then her neck, then her shoulders, down her front.

She stood and lifted her knees experimentally. She wiggled her toes inside her boots. Cortana had felt all these sensations in John’s body, but this was different. This body was hers.

But how?

“Cortana?”

The familiar voice made Cortana turn so quickly she almost fell.

Opposite her stood John, clad in his fatigues, looking every bit as bewildered as she was.

He looked down at himself. “Where’s my armor?” He looked at Cortana. “What are you doing here?”

What was either of them doing here? Cortana didn’t know. She also had a more pressing—or at least more answerable—question.

Can I touch him?

Cortana took a few tentative steps forward and put her fingertips on John’s chest. She was almost afraid he would disintegrate, like her hologram disappearing.

He didn’t. He looked down at her hands, then at her. “Are you…?”

So this is what it feels like. Inexplicably emboldened, Cortana flattened her palms and leaned her forehead against John’s breastbone.

“Cortana?” John asked again. He hadn’t made any move to return her touch. “What is this?”

“Whatever it is, don’t ruin it.” Cortana slid her arms around his back.

John was warm. Oh, he was so warm. And solid. Paradoxically, it made Cortana shiver. She pressed her ear to his chest and listened to his heart.

She’d monitored John’s heart rate for years, but to hear and feel it for herself…she couldn’t explain it.

Is he going to hug me back? Cortana felt embarrassed suddenly. Had she pushed him too far? Did he not want to hug her? Had she broken some rule—

Before Cortana could finish her thought, John’s hands grazed her back and shoulders. Then his arms wrapped tighter around her. A strange rush of relaxation washed over Cortana’s new body and she all but melted into the embrace.

No wonder physical contact was such a powerful need for humans.

Cortana almost whimpered when John pulled back just enough to look at her. He swept her hair off her forehead and behind her left ear.

She gave him a quizzical look and he shrugged sheepishly. “It was in your eye.”

“Do I look the same?” Cortana blurted.

“You’re not blue.”

She made a face. “Remember what I said about not ruining it?”

John quirked a smile. “Yeah.” He brushed his fingers over her hair again. “You look the same.”

The affection in his voice and touch made Cortana’s eyes brim with tears.

“Cortana.” John brushed his thumb across her cheekbone. “What’s wrong?”

Wrong? How could anything be wrong? I’ve never felt so safe.

“Nothing.” Cortana burrowed into his embrace again. “I’ve just wanted to do this for so long.”l

The admission seemed to break something loose and John’s hold tightened like a vise. Cortana adjusted her arms to wrap around his neck as he sank to his knees. He flattened her against him, his hands running across her shoulders, down her back, through her hair, like he was trying to commit every facet of her to memory.

“John?” Cortana gasped.

“Yeah?”

She’d wanted him to hug her back, but….

“I can’t breathe.”

John chuckled softly and loosened his Spartan-strength grip. “Better?”

“Just don’t let go,” Cortana begged hastily. She’d been scared to touch him, and now she was scared to stop.

“I won’t.” John buried his face in her shoulder and took a long breath. His next words etched themselves into her mind.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time, too.”

In an ending/tag scene I have yet to write, Cortana keeps the new hairstyle. We all know she can edit her appearance, right? ❤️

I alternately picture them on the ring as we see on the show and in a setting like the end of Halo 4.

I really don't know what came into my brain… So it ended being a Tribute to MC and Cortana before Halo Infinite launches… I wasn't going to add this much ship, really… I couldn't help it. It was a long time since I didn't create something. I admit I was inspired back again with my old love for these games and this pair.

hello there!

my life is finally calming down and i am so excited to continue my writing journey here with all the Halo fanfic ideas i’ve started and have been kicking around!

logging in again and seeing all the love on my fics, Before the Fever especially, means so much to me.

as we all know, the Halo series has returned with season 2, and it’s looking pretty great so far! i can’t wait to gather more lore and ideas from it!!

Could you imagine fighting side-by-side with the Master Chief from Installation 04 all the way to the end of the war, and meeting him again on Requiem. "I wanted to be like you, Chief."

YES, I can. I just adore these asks, gets my creative juices running. I really said we're making a short-fic with this.

The first thing that comes into mind is a Marine or an ODST that fought side by side with John through the ring. Someone who he ends up trusting considering they went through all this with him, the halo, the flood, and all that ‘fun’ stuff between. Honestly, he’s impressed they haven’t been killed yet but also how you had the ability to keep going despite everything you had faced and seen. John can think of commanders and captains who didn’t have the same resilience as you. He might even make a brief comment that you would be a good squad leader or commanding officer much to your delight.

So when he first goes MIA, it’s hard to believe that the Master Chief is gone and there is a lot of denial, but the years press on, and time doesn’t wait on anyone. I also think you would not only be grieving John’s ‘death’ but also Sergeant Johnson’s as he would’ve been your commanding officer during the war and a role model. Ultimately, you take John’s words to heart and climb up the ranks into command.

There isn’t much surprise when you are scouted out for the Spartan-IV program as one of the newest generation of Spartans by Musa Ghanem. It is surprising when he starts talking about John in an almost familiar tone and how he heard about the battles the two of you faced together on the halo. You are sold on the idea of the program as soon as Musa brings the Master Chief into the picture, what else was there than to be like him? And that maybe, if he did somehow come back, you could even have John’s back and fight for him.

As you delve into the Spartan-IV program with five others, you progress through the augmentation process, and enhancements reshape your body which lasts nearly three weeks. When it comes to training and field exercises, you and Sarah Palmer wipe the floor with the rest of the candidates. By the end of the program, you took the position of lieutenant commander as Sarah's right-hand Spartan. [Note: you and Sarah are probably besties after bonding by kicking ass. Also, Sarah has to stop you from committing something that might get you court marital a multitude of times on the UNSC Infinity, aka you almost punching the daylight out of 'captain' Andrew Del Rio.]

By the time Requiem rolls around, your reputation as a Spartan-IV and a capable leader has grown. So when you hear the distress signal, you know it's Cortana by voice alone and you are demanding to investigate, which almost prompts a fight between the captain and yourself that Commander Lasky has to intervene and side with you.

Conversation snips-

[Lasky] "I know you don't like Del Rio, Lieutenant, but I almost thought you were going to punch him."

[You] "I was this close."

[Lasky] "Your fingers are touching."

[You] "Exactly."

Or

[Lasky] "I've never seen you lose your cool like that."

[You] "I-If there is a possibility the Chief is alive, it's our job to investigate it."

[Lasky] "I feel like there is more than you're letting on."

When the UNSC Infinity crashes on Requiem, you manage to round up a squad of Spartan-IV and go scout the jungle area. It's the flash of metallic green that had you holding up your hand to stop the others from firing.

"Chief?" You call out in disbelief, your gun lower just a bit. You knew there was a possibility he was still alive but seeing him in the flesh, if it wasn't for the Spartan training, you would've started crying.

"No way...[Y/n]?" The feminine voice rang through your helmet and the sound of her on TEAMCOM had a grin touching your lips.

"'Tana! Long time no see." You gave your team a signal to hold off while you approached the Master Chief, he almost seemed to be scanning you up and down.

"You're huge! And wearing MJOLNIR."

"Ma'am yes ma'am," You chuckled. "Hi, Chief. It's good to see you up and causing trouble." This time around, John didn't seem to tower over you, he was still taller but it no longer felt like you had to crank your neck up.

"You became a Spartan?" It was a question, the first words to hear him say after all these years and you were grinning to the point your cheeks hurt.

"I wanted to be like you, Chief." You gave him a shrug. "I got scouted and here we are."

"I feel like there is more to the story than just that." Cortana quipped and you could absolutely imagine her with her hand on her hips, giving you that pointed look she did back on installation 04.

"Tell you what, we make it out of here, I buy drinks and I'll tell you everything that's happened in the last four and half years." The Spartan-ll tilted his head ever so slightly before giving you a curt nod.

"I think we would like that very much." The teasing tone in Cortana's voice didn't miss you by much and there was certainly a smile in her tone. Was she teasing you? That would have to be figured out later as several blips appeared on your radar. "So, just like old times?"
