If you were on the bachelorette what hockey boys would you want to be able to date and choose from? And who do you give your final rose to?
Hey Nonnie! This question has to be the most fun question I have ever received in my ask box. I have put too much thought into my list and the reasons why certain players would not be the recipient of my rose from night one to the final rose. So buckle up dashboard, you’re about to watch an entire season of my Bachelorette season in one post. Disclosure: I have not watched the Bachelor/Bachelorette in a very very long time. This is based on faded memories and quick google searches.
Meet the Contestants
Ross Colton - of Robinsville, NJ. Currently bottom six forward of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Anthony Cirelli - of Etobicoke, Ontario. Currently top six forward of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Brayden Point - of Calgary, Alberta. Currently top six forward of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Andrei Svechnikov - of Barnaul, Russia. Currently tops six forward of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Vince Dunn - Lindsay, Ontario. Currently one half of the top defensive pair of the Seattle Kraken.
Adam Lowry - of Calgary, Alberta (I know he was born in St Louis but he was raised in Calgary, Okay?). Currently Botton six forward of the Winnipeg Jets (and hopefully the future captain).
Timo Meir - of Herisau, Switzerland. Currently top six forward of the New Jersey Devils.
Matt Martin - of Winsdor, Ontario. Currently bottom six forward of the New York Islanders.
Anthony Beauvillier - of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec. Currently top six forward of the Vancouver Canucks.
Mat Barzal - of Coquitlam, British Columbia. Currently top six forward of the New York Islanders.
Tom Wilson - of Toronto, Ontario. Currently top six forward of the Washington Capitals.
Matthew Tkachuk - of Scottsdale, Arizona (this man has lived in so many cities because of his dad). Currently top six forward of the Florida Panthers.
Jeremy Swayman - of Anchorage, Alaska. Currently the backup goaltender of the Boston Bruins.
Pierre Luc Dubois - of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec. Currently, desperately, trying to get traded from the Winnipeg Jets to the Montreal Canadiens.
Nico Hischier - of Naters, Switzerland. Currently top six forward, and Captain of the New Jersey Devils.
Brady Skjei - of Lakeville Minnesota. Currently a defenceman of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Pat Maroon - of St Louis, Missouri. Currently bottom six forward of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Chris Kreider - of Boxford, Massachussetts. Currently top six forward of the New York Rangers.
Pytor Kotchetkov - of Penza, Russia. Currently the goaltender of the Chicago Wolves (AHL) and a backup goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes.
William Nylander - of Calgary, Alberta. Currently top six forward of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Leon Draisaitl - of Cologne, Germany. Currently top six forward of the Edmonton Oilers.
Luke Schenn - of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Currently one half of the top defensive pair of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Josh Anderson - of Burlington, Ontario. Currently top six forward for the Montreal Canadiens.
Auston Matthews - of Scottsdale, Arizona. Currently top six forward of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Brendan Lemieux - of Denver, Colorado. Currently button six forward of the Philadelphia Flyers.
The First Night
At the end of the first night, the 25 contestants would become 15, with 10 NHL hotties failing to receive my affection in the form of a rose:
Timo Meir - we know his reputation. This man is a womanizer, and it’s clear when he tried to go in for a kiss during our first conversation. But we’re here for love. For commitment. So he had to go.
Pierre-Luc Dubois - speaking of commitment. This man doesn’t know the definition of that. He can’t commit to a team, he can’t commit to me. Au revoir.
Leon Draisaitl - this man is so intimidating to me. I wouldn’t have the confidence to pursue anything of any nature.
Pat Maroon - his energy would be too much for me. Confident, successful, and ready to party. I wouldn’t be able to keep up.
Luke Scheen - is a sweet guy, but wouldn’t do much to set himself apart from the rest.
Josh Anderson - would have flashed his abs at least once during the night - and I would have noticed but it wouldn't be enough to set him apart from the rest of the guys who go the extra mile to set themselves apart.
Nico Hischier - a sweet guy. Very gentlemanly. But he’s a little young for me so he doesn’t receive a rose.
Auston Matthews - Auston would come in so confident he would come off as cocky. Would brag about his friendship with Justin Beiber and would come dressed in an expensive sweatsuit instead of a suit like the other contestant. Would not be a vibe.
Brendan Lemieux - during the first night. Brendan Lemieux and Matthew Tkachuk got into a physical altercation regarding the biting incident with Brady Tkachuk. Production wanted to kick them both off the show, but instead, they were allowed to stay until the end of the night where Tkachuk was the only one of the two to receive the rose.
Pytor Kochetkov - my sweet sweet Pytor. He would have needed Svechnikov to translate for him all night. So kind and sweet, but the language barrier was strong and Svechnikov would have needed to be a constant third wheel to make it work - plus he’s kind I can’t decide if he is baby brother vibes or not. He would not receive the final rose of the evening.
Season Highlights
Andrei Svechnikov secured the first kiss on the first night with his charm, maturity and his kindness in helping Pytor through the night when he could have been selfish
Andrei also received the first rose of the season before the first rose ceremony was held
Vince Dunn would be a quick fan favorite but not without controversy - there would be a call to action from fans that wanted him to be sent home but he would remain on the show after making a public apology at the rose ceremony
Anthony Beauvillier and Mat Barzal would go on a 2 on 1 date with me, some kind of outdoorsy thing with paddleboarding and it would have been a great time BUT they would both go home that same night after Beauvillier refuses the rose on the date. Their friendship ultimately gets in the way of their pursuit of love
Ross Colton would fail to receive a rose after a group date that involved an extensive hike in the wilderness
Tkachuk would continue to be an instigator for the season starting conflicts and pushing the buttons of other contenders. It would lead to Tom Wilson and Matt Martin not receiving roses but he would be the one not to receive a rose when a conflict with Lowry would arise. Lowry would receive the final rose that night, sending Tkachuk home.
Chris Kreider would try to propose midseason and his eagerness and willingness to commit so early would be a red flag, he would not receive a rose at the following ceremony
After regret and complications, Ross Colton would be welcomed back onto the show as I would feel like failing to give him a rose was a mistake
With the welcoming back of Ross to the show, William Nylander would be sent home as a result
On a 1 on 1 date with Brady Skeji things would look to become more intimate than it actually was and viewers would be shocked when he would not receive a rose later than night
During what would be the rose ceremony that would bring it down to the final 4 it is revealed that it would be a final 5 with only 7 contenders remaining: Ross Colton, Anthony Cirelli, Adam Lowry, Andrei Svechnikov, Brayden Point, Jeremy Swayman and Vince Dunn
Viewers would be shocked when Anthony Cirelli would receive the final rose before the final four over Brayden Point who had been a front-runner for your heart since night one
The Final Five
Usually the final four, but would be changed last minute as I struggled to make the decision, it would be time to travel and meet the families of the final 5 contestants.
Ross Colton - the trip would take me to New Jersey where I would meet his parents and his brother Rob. They would be welcoming, and kind, but it would be very clear how many worlds apart we are and it would plant some insecurities of just how well I would be able to fit into their lifestyle and expectations.
Anthony Cirelli - back in Canada, I would meet his family, and very importantly Grandma Cirelli who is known for her tomato sauce. We would cook a meal together in their family kitchen - and she would approve of my cooking.
Vince Dunn - A mere hour away from where we visited Tony’s family, I would meet Dunn’s. It’s a smaller city and feels familiar to what I’ve grown up in BUT everyone seems to know him there. It’s weird being there with a local celebrity because there is no just blending into a big city here. His family would be as kind and welcoming as the others, and I’d get to see more of his emotional side that we would have seen glimmer off throughout the season.
Adam Lowry - in Calgary we would meet his family, a very strong hockey family, with his dad having played and coached and his brother having played as well. It’s their lives, and will always be a part of it. We would see just how good he is with his nieces and nephews and go to see the mountains in Banff.
Andrei Svechnikov - the final trip would take me to Russia where I would meet his parents, his brother and his brother’s family. It would be a breathtaking trip, one like any other seen on the show but it would be conflicting as his mother would show her concerns. I would not be what his mother imagined for her sweet boy, and her approval is very important to him. And the larger age gap would be revisited.
After the trips, it would come to the rose ceremony that would bring the final 5 down to the final two. That night, Andrei would fail to receive a rose, the age gap and the pressure of his mother being too much. Ross, while an obvious favourite for the majority of the season would not receive a rose, the high maintenance feel of his family too much and too intimidating to commit to at that moment - and the goodbye is one not without tears. The viewers would be shocked again when Tony would receive the final rose, sending Lowry back to the off-season. His familiar pressure of their legacy all too much even though seeing him with his nephews would given me absolute baby fever.
Then only two remained: Anthony Cirelli and Vince Dunn.
The Final Rose
The final rose would be one of great controversy with lots of viewers seeming to think I was making a mistake moving forward with my final two. That I had greater chemistry with other players that I had sent walking and that whoever I chose would be a decision made in regret. But I was left to make the choice between the two final contenders. Anthony Cirelli. The sweet, respectable boy from Vaughn. Who maybe wasn’t as traditionally handsome as the other contestants - but I’m a sucker for those curls. Who loves Kygo and partying in Miami but will always value his family and their traditions above all else.
And then there was Vince. The mildly problematic, handsome man - who also has those oh-so-dangerous curls and those bright eyes. He can be wild, but also sweet - and always so intense with emotions that you can see so clearly written across his face. A man who can enjoy the outdoors as much as a night at the club.
And while Tony and Ross both very clearly have a piece of my heart I need a man who is going to be able to go out there and enjoy nature with me. Someone who won’t care that I don’t spend an hour in front of the mirror to do my hair and my makeup every day. Someone who will love my cooking, and isn’t afraid of his emotions or to have tough conversations.
And for those reasons, I would have to give my final rose to… Vince.

Christopher Mathias and Matt Shuham at HuffPost:
Real estate developer Reuven Kahane, whose cousin founded a notorious group deemed a “violent extremist” organization by the FBI, was arrested in New York City on Tuesday after he allegedly drove his car into a group of pro-Palestinian protesters, injuring a 55-year-old woman. Kahane, 57, was charged with second-degree assault, a New York City Police Department spokesperson confirmed to HuffPost. Police said the Upper East Side real estate developer was driving his car near the corner of Park Avenue and 72nd Street on Tuesday morning when he got into a dispute with a group of about 25 pro-Palestinian protesters who were marching nearby. As the protesters began to disperse, Kahane allegedly drove his car into the crowd, striking Maryellen Novak, who was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The incident was first reported on X (formerly Twitter) by Talia Jane, an independent journalist in New York City. Reached by phone Wednesday, Kahane told HuffPost, in reference to the protest, “I was driving home from dropping off my daughter at school, and live within seven blocks of the location.” He declined to comment further on the incident.
Referring to his relative Meir Kahane, a rabbi who founded the extremist Jewish Defense League, he said, “My cousin passed away more than three decades ago and should have no influence in this story.” Novak and another protester, 63-year-old John Rozendaal, were arrested on charges of criminal mischief. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in a statement Wednesday that it would decline to prosecute Novak and Rozendaal. Reuven Kahane’s attorneys, Sara Shulevitz and Mindy Meyer, told HuffPost that their client pleaded not guilty to the charge of second-degree assault during an arraignment Wednesday morning. His next court appearance is set for June 25.
[...] The pro-Palestinian protesters had been picketing outside the residence of a Columbia University trustee. This came during weekslong demonstrations from students, faculty and alumni demanding that the Ivy League school divest its endowment funds from companies and weapons manufacturers that have business with Israel’s government amid that country’s ongoing siege of Gaza, which has killed around 35,000 Palestinians, 24,000 of whom were women and children. According to a statement from Columbia University Apartheid Divest, or CUAD — the group that organized Tuesday’s demonstration — Kahane initially drove up to the protesters in his car and asked for a flyer. When one of the protesters handed him a flyer, Kahane grabbed the protester’s arm, the statement said. Kahane then “parked in front of the picketers until we started leaving, then circled the block to drive into our peaceful demonstration,” the statement continued. “One member of CUAD’s de-escalation team was struck and has since been hospitalized.”
[...] Kahane is the cousin once removed of Meir Kahane, whose Jewish Defense League was designated a “right-wing terror group” and a “violent extremist” organization by the FBI. Meir Kahane was killed in New York City by an Egyptian American man in 1990; the killer was acquitted of murder but would go on to participate in the 1993 World Trade Center attack. He was later convicted on federal charges related to the rabbi’s death.
Reuven Kahane, the cousin of far-right extremist rabbi Meir Kahane, was charged with second-degree assault as a result of driving his car into pro-Palestine protestors in NYC.

Character Intro: Shay
Tumblr media
Name: Shay Dominguez
Pronouns: She/her
Age: 21
Earth heritage: Argentinian (a little Mexican)
First introduction/appearance:
“Has anyone seen the black boxes? Two are missing from inventory.” A pause. Jared’s tone slips into suspicion. “Dominguez?”
“Yeah?” There is the sound of small metal objects scattering across Shay’s work table. “I’ve got them, Vaea. Although they’re more than a little deconstructed at the moment. Had an idea on how to boost the reach of the sensory array.”
“I ask you to mark this on the inventory table. At least so I know who to hunt down when they are not returned,” Pema says.
“Yes ma’am. On it.” Another beep signals them going offline.
///
Jared asks follow up questions, all the while silhouetted by sparks of light from the Mechanics Office. Sounds of grinding and popping come from the open door where Bennett can just make out Shay in that dark room wearing a welding helmet. Bennett gets so into telling the story of the monkeys that he almost misses a particularly exuberant burst of sparks followed by a light across the room through the opaqued glass. Not even he could miss the fire alarm though.
Bennett rolls his eyes and covers his ears. Jared looks panicked.
A calm, monotonous voice says, “A fire has been detected in the building. Please remain calm and follow proper protocols,” followed by urgent beeping.
“I got it!” Shay takes off her jacket and smothers the flame. The alarm stops as she inputs her code.
There is a bitter smell of burning wood that is strangely nostalgic. Pema has since run out into the common area, her sharp eyes taking in the situation.
“False alarm everybody,” Bennett calls out. People visibly relax, some more annoyed and others more concerned. Toi’ya falls under the former category, looking ruffled as she extracts her hands from beneath her black hair. Dr. Meir appears lost, not having a protocol for this.
Shay leans against the doorframe and grins lopsidedly at Bennett. Her wavy, blue ponytail tips over one shoulder. “Just some sawdust. Everything is under control.”
“Mhmm.” Bennett hums, unconvinced by the walking disaster he calls his friend.
///
“I wish I’d gotten thicker lines on this one.” She holds out her forearm and points to a dagger impaling a rose. Most of her tattoos are in the American sailor style with some Japanese waves and details. “My first one used to look like this but the edges have blurred so the outline isn’t as clear as I’d like.”
///
Her prosthetic is leaning between the bedside table and the bedframe. It looks like a piece of art with the delicate geometric pattern that blooms over the surface. The 3D printed frame is intricate in itself, with shapes curving and all mathematically checked to handle what forces she could subject the limb to. Bennett designed the pattern that fills the spaces between. There are birds and clouds above the knee that transition into a field of flowers which sprout from her ankle. An apple tree curves up the outer leg, the trunk knobby and branches laden with fruit. The surface is matte and ombres from sky blue to grass green aside from the granny smith green of the apples and purple of the lavender blooms. The foot is solid green with a compass in black as if it is a tattoo.
Fun fact about her: Shay regularly spends her nights in her mechanic workshop, eating peanut butter out of the jar between simulations

COMING HOME IN THE DARK - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Dark Sky Films
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  A family’s idyllic outing at an isolated coastline descends into terror when high school teacher Alan ‘Hoaggie’ Hoaganraad, his wife Jill, and stepsons Maika and Jordon unexpectedly come across a pair of murderous drifters - the enigmatic psychopath Mandrake and his hulking man-child accomplice Tubs - who thrust them into a nightmare road trip. At first, the family’s terror seems to be born of a random encounter with two sociopaths, but as the night drags on, Hoaggie and Jill realize that this nightmare of actions that set it in motion 20 years earlier.
REVIEW: Filmmaker James Ashcroft’s COMING HOME IN THE DARKis a gritty and raw thriller that is an emotionally terrorizing film, especially for viewers who are parents. There is a tone to the film that is reminiscent of the early films of Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, William Friedkin, Meir Zarchi, David Fincher or even Speilberg’s “Duel.” It is a much darker character study set against a lavish New Zealand landscape.
Like several of the earlier works of the filmmakers mention, at its core the film is a character study. Two men were abused when they were younger at a foster care facility. We know that the father, Alan aka Hoaggie, of the family was there at that time, but what is he exactly guilty of? It isn’t 100% clear that he was an abuser, but is that as bad of a sin as having turned a blind eye and not doing anything? The filmmaker makes it clear that they were not the only two victims. As such, Mandrake and Tubs have come upon Alan and his family and Mandrake wants his pound of flesh. The filmmaker presents his tale in such a way that we feel about the same for Mandrake, Tubs and Alan. The filmmaker makes a bold statement by removing any question of innocence in the narrative by removing two characters early on who represent that to a degree. He then does a slow burn as he peels back the layers and we begin to understand who these characters are. What is justice in this instance? Is Alan any different from Mandrake?
Along the way they encounter other people who fall victim to Mandrake’s wrath. One is the hapless victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The other is a group of adolescents who by their actions, or lack thereof, fall prey to Mandrake. It provides the filmmaker with just enough ambiguity as to the true nature of Mandrake.
I’m sure Ashcroft and Kent named the character Mandrake because of some of the implications of the word. Mandrake also feels like the anti-hero from an old western in both his tone and timber. He is out for revenge, but goes about it in a more horror film style with his share of collateral damage. In contrast there is Tubs, who feels like a classic literary observer, he has let the Jin out of the bottle and must watch the deadly results of his wish. In the end it is only by his action that these events can come to an end.
The majority of the film is set outdoors, in cars, at night and minimal locations. It is beautifully shot, nicely edited, and features excellent performances. The entire cast lulls you into a narrative. Regardless of how horrible the events are, you feel you are watching something organic unfold before your eyes. The entire cast is amazing, but you can’t help but feel how special Daniel Gillies' performance is as Mandrake. It is one of those magical screen moments.
James Ashcroft’s COMING HOME IN THE DARK is a mature narrative that deals with potentially real-life situations and trauma as the undercurrent for a gruesome character study.  The horror and the gore are not simply there for exploitation but serve as a catalyst and catalyst in this psychological game with deadly consequences. Ashcroft offers no comic relief. Mandrake may offer some sarcastic or ironic dialogue, but it is never present in a way to offer the viewer relief. It is a powerful film with lingering effects on the viewer's psyche. I’m quite sure that James Ashcroft is a filmmaker that we will be hearing more of in the coming years.

7 Years Since the Passing of IDF General Danny Matt
Danny Matt was born in 1927 and started his illustrious military career with the Palmach. During the War of Independence, he was one of the last defenders of the Gush Etzion block and fell captive to the Jordanians.
After being released, Matt enrolled in officer’s school and was noticed by Ariel Sharon, who appointed him company commander in the newly formed 890th Paratroopers Brigade.
During the Sinai Campaign, he led his troops in battle at the Mitla Pass and was wounded in the neck and shoulder. During the Six Day War, Danny commanded a brigade of reserve paratroopers and led them to victory in the Sinai and then in the Golan Heights.
After the war was over, he was appointed commander over the Paratroopers Brigade. During the Yom Kippur War, he commanded the brigade of reserve paratroopers who fought at the Suez Canal.
After fighting in five wars and countless battles, Danny retired from his combat career in 1974 and went on to hold numerous positions, including the head of Military Court of Appeals, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, and Military Ombudsman. After retiring from the IDF in 1992, Matt headed the LIBI Fund, a nonprofit organization that assists IDF soldiers, until he passed away on December 5, 2013.
May his memory be a blessing.

I was tagged by @hillbillied, who is a horrible influence on me but also the best influence bc who else has such an emotional hard on for AndyEddie??? It’s what we deserve.
RULES: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 8 ( heavy on the ish) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome work!
            THE BANE CHRONICLES (fic series)
It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that Magnus Bane has long been my comfort character and someone that I could write essays upon essays about, despite the fact that canonical information about him is slim to none (at least that I don’t choose to ignore, thanks Casserole Clam!) and in January, I just decided that I would start to do that! This fic series is similar to an essay in that it’s in depth and gives me emotional distress, and different because it doesn’t have a deadline & took me practically a year to write a second fic after the first (we are in a Panera Bread, after all.) Many thanks to @nightmaresintofireflies for keeping this alive, even with its extremely long hiatus!
THE ADVENTURES OF DALLAS DIXON AND MATT MEIR (fic series)
I tend to do this thing when I’m feeling especially creative (and perhaps a little bit manic) wherein I write me and any number of my friends into our favorite universes just for the hell of it. K was as ever indulgent as she always is and allowed me to bring her to life in this fic series, which is still under progress (and will probably be for quite some time seeing as I have more fics that I haven’t even started yet :P), though I am currently working on The Pacific based one, The Winner Takes it All which is a true labor of love because I take twenty years to write a single sentence. We’ll get there eventually!
THE MOST DANGEROUS THING (IS TO LOVE) (fic)
I’m a history nerd, I will always be a history nerd, I have been one since I was very little thanks to my two history major parents and my history engrossed brother. This was born from a combination of my love of The Pacific and the American Civil War, specifically my adoration of the people who lived in the South during the time period that refused to be puppets in the Confederacy’s dumbass power play. Ed knows just how *chef’s kiss* communist, liberal and absolutely feral Edward Jones is, and that also played a part in this. I’ve only got one chapter up right now but I have the entire shit plotted out and boy oh boy, are y’all in for a treat if you’re watching this one!
           SKULLS (playlist)
Thanks to us being in a Peninsula and suffering, I’ve created many playlists this year, especially HBO War ones because, well, hype fixation is a son of a bitch, but this one (which is ofc, AndyEddie, don’t y’all know me??) is my favorite to listen to. If you want to cry, give it a listen, otherwise...keep yourself sane and don’t think about them being together in life and death.
I’m not going to officially tag anyone here (since it’s less than 24 hours to the end of 2020), but if you see this and you want to brag about your achievements during this rollercoaster of a fuckin’ year, feel free to say that I tagged you and allow me to support your creative pursuits!

"And I say to you that you are Peter, a rock, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not be stronger than it. I will give you keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you tie up on the earth will be tied up in heaven, and whatever you untie on earth will be untied in heaven." (vv. 18–19)
The expression “And I say” is generally reserved for pronouncements by the major authority on issues that are contentious. Uncommon in Talmudic literature, it is found almost exclusively in Mishnah and Tosefta in formulations of Rabbi Judah the Prince, head of the Jewish communities in Palestine and of the Academy of the Sages¹³.
As for the name Peter, I see no reason to think that Simon’s name was not Petros¹⁴. Jews could have had multiple names; even one’s name in Judea might have been different in the Galilee¹⁵. So Jesus says, “Petros, which I, Jesus interpret as petra (Greek loanword in Hebrew, Aramaic), a rock.” Eventually Jesus will declare that nothing will be stronger than this rock—the authority of Peter—which anchors the Church. Rabbi Meir is quoted as saying about the biblical Elimelekh, whose journeys led to the eventual birth of King David: “[A]nd the name of the man was EliMelekh (Ruth 1,2)” as if he had unwittingly proclaimed two words eli—“to me,” and melekh—“will come kingship!” (Ruth Rab. 2,5). Similarly, Jesus declares that Peter’s name is actually a sign of his future. The passage is brilliantly constructed and rests on a nimble Jewish mind that has provided the puzzle pieces for the Gospel to connect, constructing its own picture for its own purposes.
The midrash (preserved in Yalkut Šim‘oni 766) interprets the reference in Num 29,3 to rosh tzurim as “from the first [available] rocks I chose him”:
The parable of a king who sought to build [a solid palace]: he kept digging deeper and deeper to lay foundations but as everywhere he dug there were watery quagmires, he dug elsewhere. He found petra [rockbed] beneath this other spot and declared, “I will build right here!” He laid the foundations and built it there.
In like fashion, when God wanted to begin the creation of the world, He contemplated and saw the unworthy generations that would spring up at first. When God foresaw Abraham arising in the future He said, “I have located My petra upon which to build and to lay the foundation of the world.” So He named Abraham ‘Tzur’ ” [=petra= rock].
Jesus sees within Peter’s name the unshakeable foundation of his church. A comparison might be made between the rock of Peter and the rock of Abraham. Just as Abraham [=Petra] is the one who spread the message monotheism to the world, so Peter [=Petra] will be the one to spread the word of Jesus’ messiahship to the world. Many have understood the rest of this passage to refer to Peter’s evangelical teachings.
The more creative rhetorical flourish comes from the realization of the word play in Hebrew etymology involving tzur. Not only do we find tzur as “rock, tzor also means “tie”¹⁶ or “lock up”¹⁷. Together they produce an image of something both immovable and secured. Not only will Peter be the foundational bed-rock for the church, he will also hold the keys that can lock up Hell or unlock Paradise. Ruth Rab. Petitchtot (7) illustrates tzor as “bound” or “shut closed” together with the sense of aḥaz, both having the same meaning:
Ahaz plotted . . . if there are to be no disciples, there can be no sages. But to have no sages, there can be no synagogues and schools, and [all the better] if there are no synagogues and schools, in a manner of speaking, God will not have a dwelling place in the world. Behold I will shut closed (aḥaz) the synagogues and schools! This is what Isa 8,16 relates (creatively rendered): Shut closed the teaching [places]! Seal up the Torah [scholars] with the disciples!
Rabbi Ḥanina says: [W]hy was he called “Ahaz”? Because he shut closed (aḥaz) the synagogues and the schools.
On the one hand, Peter has become tzur—rock; rock becomes solid foundation. The meaning of tzur then shifts from rock to tzor—shut closed. “Shut closed” moves us to the image of “keys that open or lock doors.” The interpretive trigger for the passage lies in the recognition that the (possibly Aramaic) source used by Matthew must originally have referred to tzur—perhaps the very tzurim (plural) of Num 29,3. It is tempting, although admittedly speculative, to see some kind of midrashic connection operating here. Tzur as petra applies both to Abraham, upon whom the principle of monotheism was founded, and to Peter, upon whom the Church would be founded.
If Abraham was the rock of this world for the Rabbis, Peter is the both the foundation of the church and the key-holder of the eschaton for the evangelist. This insight gives us the textual tools we need to interpret the import of Matt 16,19, which concludes the passage:
"I will give you keys of the heavenly kingdom, and whatever you tie up on the earth will be tied up in heaven, and whatever you untie on earth will be untied in heaven.
Let us consider further about what is tied up and untied on earth. I think “tie up” is best rendered “shut closed” and “untie” as “opened up.”
Many years ago I undertook a study of these lines,¹⁸ looking at the tradition history of word pairs deō/lyō (tie-up/untie) in Greek with their equivalents pataḥ -’asar in Hebrew. I mainly considered passages where the pairs were contrasted, as they are in the Gospel, paying less attention to usages where the one or the other appeared without its mate. I discounted the meanings of teaching, forbidding/permitting, swearing/dissolving promises, binding with spells/removing spells; even if these Jewish usages could be made to fit the context, they do not consistently appear as the word pairs that render deō / lyō (tie-up/untie) and upon which I based my study. I also examined the interpretation of our Gospel passage in the Didascalia Apostolorum and in its alternative tradition, John 20,23.
I concluded that this verse conveys the idea that membership in good standing in the Church is tantamount to having the bonds of death opened up forever; whereas the loss of this status is tantamount to having the bonds of eternal death shut closed. Heaven has concurred to follow the dictates of the churches and the leadership of Peter. To me the passage means “death will be shut closed or opened by the authority of Peter and his Church to admit or refuse membership.”¹⁹ This passage looks to be supportive of the Jewish Apostolic Church in Jerusalem. It was indeed this understanding of the authority of Peter, believed to have been embodied in the papacy, that gave medieval Popes their power over kings, whom they could threaten with excommunication and eternal damnation.
Matthew seems to have merged verses from a very pro-Peter source with a source that is either anti-Peter or neutral. We can see the effect of this pro-Peter source by comparing Matthew 16,17–19 with Mark 8,29–33—which also has its place in Matthew’s account—where there is nothing complimentary to Peter at all:
He questioned them, “And you, who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to him, “You are the Messiah.” He rebuked them, so that no one would speak about him. He began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the Scribes, and to be killed, and after three days to rise. He made this speech boldly, and Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him. He turned around and, seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Go behind me, Satan! You are not thinking the thoughts of God, but of human beings.”
Luke 9,20–22 has neither praise nor condemnation for Peter:
He said to them, “And you, who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.” He rebuked them and commanded them not to tell this to anyone: The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and Scribes, and be killed, and raised on the third day.”
Jesus, having admitted He was the Messiah and praised Peter, now returns us to an anti-Peter narrative. Matthew’s Gospel, unique in its presentation, maintains both views of Peter alongside one another in unresolved tension. This verse seems to be a later, reworked version of a statement preserved in a more pristine form in Matt 18,18, where there is no reference to Peter or to the keys to the Kingdom.
