Bad News of the Week:

I completely understand being tired. At the end of a working week. Towards your children and the housework. Or of a fruitless discussion. But "Corona fatigue"? An absurd expression, mind you, since it refers not to the pandemic itself, but to the restrictions against it.

The latest figures show that mobility has returned to pre-pandemic levels. Despite home offices and closed stores and cultural institutions. And that satisfaction with the federal government has dropped to an all-time low. Probably the reason why various restrictions are now being scaled back despite rising incidence figures. And Italy stops a shipment of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Australia - and here, one in three citizens will skip his vaccination appointment if he is to get this British-Swedish vaccine. Yet its big plus is that, while weaker against the infection itself, it provides the most reliable protection against severe disease progression.

All react strange. And scary. A broken leg only affects you. And against syphilis I can effectively protect myself. But mankind can only win the fight against this virus if everyone pulls the same string. I think that's what tires me the most, even in these hard times: being at the mercy of the good will of others. Because that requires a certain amount of empathy and solidarity, which I often miss even in good times.

Good News of the Week:

The U.S. has given government subsidies to its aircraft manufacturer Boeing. And the EU has subsidized its Airbus. Any preschooler would say to that: "Okay, we're even!". But not the politicians. They accused each other of distorting competition and imposed punitive tariffs, even with the placet of the WTO. Since then, Harley Davidson motorcycles, blue jeans and bourbon whiskey (who drinks that at all?) have been more expensive and thus less attractive for us Europeans, and vice versa, Spanish olive oil, Italian parmesan and German wine (who drinks that at all?) for the US Americans.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke on the phone. And agreed to suspend tariffs for four months, during which they hope to agree on a new set of rules for bilateral trade. And that will succeed. After all, "America First" was yesterday, and Europe has always had a certain penchant for harmony. This is actually normal for two trading powers that should be on the same wavelength ideologically. But after four frosty years of Trump's isolationism, even business as usual is good news.

Personal happy Moment of the Week:

Part of the Bavarian baccalaureate, our university entrance qualification, is the project seminar. This is a subject where the emphasis is not on the dull regurgitation of learned knowledge, but on dedication and creativity. That should have been ideal for my daughter. And it was: 30 out of 30 points! But what pleased me even more was the principal's comment on her final report, called the portfolio: "This portfolio is one of the most entertaining I've ever read - heck, it's #1!" Daddy is proud :-)

As I write this...

...I'm listening to George Gershwins classics like Rhapsody in Blue, Porgy & Bess, I got Rhythm etc. And once again support small local breweries: this time the "Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain", established in the year 804 - no, that's no typo!
