Rhysand pros will go around and tell the antis that hating on Rhysand for being morally grey is not right. Rhysand is a complex character and if you can’t handle it, pick up some other book (with lighter themes).

But that’s just not true. We don’t hate him for being morally grey. I loved his character in book 1 (even though he broke Feyre’s arm). I’ve read characters who’ve done much worse and understand that characters being morally grey, or even downright evil doesn’t mean you should hate them. I actually respect authors for writing a character that so fucked up that we can feel how evil they are by just reading it. (Loved the way Mazir was written /hated the things he did). The complexity makes the book interesting.

What I hate was how Rhysand was made out to be a saint by SJM. How everything he did was given a justification because SJM fell in love with him. It just destroyed the character. Let him stay evil, don’t give his actions justification, and I don’t think I would have hated him all that much. It just made the character look manupilative towards his partner (can’t convince me he wasn’t lying all along) and his partner/friends look dumb for believing him.

I can handle dark themes. But the fact remains that it wasn’t dark theme or anything like that. It was just retcons. And the fact that SJM actually wrote a different trilogy and scraped it for sucking the bat’s dick is further proof of why people need to stop defending his actions. There’s nothing to defend. He manupilated Feyre, SJM manupilated you, and you believed everything because you don’t have any analytical skills.

Yes, I completely agree! He is not allowed to actually be morally grey. Everything is explained away or excused.

Winter court children? Wasn't him.

Hurting Feyre? Had to do it and is traumatised now but won't ever touch upon it.

Illyrians? He's trying SO hard because he's such a special boy but they're not nice :(

8. Would your OC ostensibly be able to get away with murder?

Yes. Fully. He has in canon many times. It isn't so much that the murders are never discovered (though that is part of it), but moreso that the people who die are people who weren't liked to begin with, so guards don't care much about figuring out who did it.

24. What is an alternative life path your OC might have gone down? How different would their life be if they'd made those decisions?

I think the main alternative life path would've been one where he didn't make a deal with the mafia. In that universe, Celeus never got hurt and Maz never joined the Hansa. It would be a quiet life, but pleasant. He'd never meet his father's side of the family, but I don't think he cares much. He'd get married, continue running his shop and eventually just grow old and die (unless he blows himself up, which is not unlikely). One would say it would be boring, but it's quite likely he'll continue injuring himself by accident so it's never entirely boring.

Nolk

8. Would your OC ostensibly be able to get away with murder?

Depends on whether it's Good AU Nolk or canon Nolk. Canon Nolk has and will continue to do so. Good AU Nolk I think couldn't even bear the idea of killing someone. If he did have to, the only reason he wouldn't turn himself in is that it'd mean potentially seeing his dad again. I guess he would get away with it, since he's very careful and thorough, but it's not a likely situation to occur.

Your point about SA is so true. She adds it to everything. There was absolutely no reason, no benefit to the plot at all, for SJM have the kelpie kiss Nesta and SA her mouth and for Lanthys to show her a vision where she’s repeatedly raped. There was no point to it and it was quite literally just another reason for SJM to punish Nesta’s character on top of everything else that happened in ACOSF.

I find SA in media a really difficult topic. Putting under a read more - discussion of ACOTAR and my own writing in it. Trigger warnings relating to SA.

I complete agree that there was no reason for that to happen to Nesta. Cassian proceeding to have rough sex with her after the kelpie was also completely uncalled for an unnecessary, demonstrating how wrong their relationship is.

But then I have to ask, why is any SA needed? There is so much suffering in the books as it is. Going into the cauldron could be an allegory to SA as they're losing their humanity against their will.

I think even in tog, all of the cadre had to have a sexual relationship with Maeve (with perhaps the exception of Lorcan). Did Rhys really have to SA Feyre for weeks/months? Why are there so many sexual predators in SJMs books? I get that majority of her characters are horny 100% of the time, but it's so unnecessary.

In the Story of Old, Elsa is raped at the end of the first book by Mazir, who is the man who takes her from her home and introduces her to Lazarin. I originally had the scene far more graphic then I took it out because I was sick of SA being so rife in books then I put a toned-down scene back into it where it focuses just on Elsa zoning out and wishing it was over.

The reasons why I put it back in were:

Mazir only ever saw Elsa as a possession. There was little sexual desire, he purely saw her as something that he owned. Knowing what it meant to her, he did it as a way to hurt her and try to keep her as his because she was "ruined"

Elsa was taught to pride her virginity, save herself until marriage, and stay with one person. In book 2, she will reflect on those ideals and realise that actually, that isn't all she is. She endured something horrific, but it wasn't her fault whatsoever and she is not "ruined" because of it. She is worth far more than what lies between her legs.

She will heal from it, learn to enjoy sex and see that there is pleasure within it. She will also have her justice. She will find peace. She will find her revenge.

Elsa has to give her life up for a world where there are not just good people and that moral dilemma is something she really struggles with in books 2&3. It also makes her question her faith because her Gods didn't swoop in and save her.

Despite all of these reasons, I still have guilt about putting it in my story because books should be an escape. Yet it plays such an important role in Elsa's journey and massively changes her character arc. I worked really hard to almost "justify" why I included it, trying hard to find ways to not include that event, because it was not purely for shock value. In book 2, it's not forgotten about. Elsa embarks on a new relationship and sometimes she's absolutely fine with sex and then sometimes, her body seizes up and she freaks out. I've tried really hard to reflect a natural healing journey that includes set backs.

Celeus looked wearily up from his work. He'd spent his entire day looking at ledgers. If there's anything he didn't need, it was more numbers flying about his senses. He sighed. "Mazire, darling - kiss me or shut up." Maz’s rant cut off midsentence as a grin spread across his face. "As you wish." One hand on the table, another on Celeus' chin, he pressed his lips against his lover's in a passionate kiss. "It was a joke, Maz," Celeus chuckled, shaking his head. He looked back at his work. If this wasn’t done by tomorrow, his boss would - as Maz so gently put it - set his structural stability to zero. Or at least have a strong word with him. Nowadays that felt like the same thing. Maz shrugged. "What? I need a reason to kiss my husband?" "Yes. And you need to sign forms in triplicate." He looked up. For as much as he was trying to hide it, his smile was more than obvious. "I'll let it slide this time though." Maz laughed loudly. His tail danced through the air. After making his way over to the other side of the table, he pulled back a chair next to his beloved. The legs scratched on the floor. He sat down. With some groans and cracks, he put his legs across Celeus' lap. His arms he wrapped around his neck.

"How could I ever make it up to you, mister guard?" He pressed a kiss to Celeus' jaw who hummed in delight. A smile formed on his lips. For a moment, as his eyes turned dark, dark like red wine or a bouquet of roses, dark like the sea at sunset, all work was forgotten. 

"Later," was all he said, but it was all Maz needed to know.

Buckshot

Hollyhock: What's their biggest goal right now?

Buckshot doesn’t really have much of a goal for his life. The closest thing is “Never get in another fistfight.” That’s the reason he made his guns. Now he’s just kinda floating around and making ends meet.

Begonia: Do they have any specific irrational fears?

Buckshot is inherently made uncomfortable by people taller than him, though that’s not usually an issue as he stands 6′9. It’s why he mostly avoids other firbolgs, though. At a basic level, he’s scared of big, unpredictable animals; large dogs, horses, cows, deer when they’re up close.

Dahlia

Dahlia: What's your favorite thing about them?

I like how her story is sort of an exercise in unreliable narrators. If you heard her backstory from her point of view, it would be completely different than the objective reality of it. Dahlia acts as a sort of catharsis for the part of me that’s stuck mourning the child I used to be, when I got absolutely no support or help for my mental illness. She’s a good person, at heart, but was failed by her society, and she’s hurting.

Mari

Dill: Do they have any rivals?

Hmmmm...not exactly. I’d actually say the person Mari sees as closest to a rival is Azaleas. She knows logically that Azaleas was always evil and untrustworthy, but their betrayal still hurt her deeply and personally. Less because she liked them and more because it made her distrust her own judgement...she really never thought they’d turn into a Big problem. Never thought they’d do something to REALLY screw the hansa over. Mari thought Azaleas was something they had contained, and when that was proven false it shook her up, and now she feels like everything that happens as a result of it is her responsibility. And she needs to be the one to take care of them.

Lavender: If they were going to a masquerade ball, how would they feel and who would they take?

Excited, but anxious. Mari enjoys a party but knows it is not her natural place; the person she is at them is a far cry from her regular self. She likes to play pretend, though. If she got to choose anybody, she’d probably take Mazire. Something about him actually makes her feel more comfortable in social situations. They play off each other well, and she’s definitely not going to be the one making a scene if he’s there. And secretly, she likes the chaos.

Amity

Lily-of-the-valley: What's their general sense of style?

Amity kinda dresses like a lesbian girlboss lmao. Fancy clothes, always, with a general masculine bent. Suit and tie, vest and cravat, doublets, that sort of thing. She keeps her hair short and usually colored something bright. She’s very sharp. Wears a lot of makeup, and does it so it’s very angular. She resembles a venomous creature. She doesn’t want to look approachable.

Arrame

Lily-of-the-valley: What's their general sense of style?

She wears a lot of red. Rarely does more makeup than a bit of blush or lipstick, since she can’t see herself anyway and never got too good at applying things that take a lot of precision. Never wears clothes that could get caught on her feet, so dresses usually stay just below the knee or shorter. She does like to wear things that are flowy (it’s sexy and the texture is nice!), a lot of open silken shirts. She dresses very sexually and she does know this, even though she doesn’t know what it looks like. She likes wearing clothes that feel good on her body.
