I'm gonna be candid here, and I know this is an unpopular opinion, so if people feel the need to unfollow or block, I won't take it personally. Here goes: the way Lila intercepts and threatens Klaus is really just one small symptom of a larger trend I see between Diego and Lila as a couple, that makes me very uncomfortable.

Put simply, I love Diego and I love Lila: separately, not as a couple. And I think she needs him much more than he truly needs her, but his sense of loyalty, his sense of duty/obligation, and his resolve not to become his own father, are keeping him with her; that, and the circumstances of the world ending, and Lila being the only person left that Diego has ever had romantic feelings toward. But "we're the only ones left and we've been through trauma together" does not a good relationship make.

Diego needs the space and the patience to learn how to verbalize his emotions. He's deeply traumatized, and he needs a partner who will help him work through his sense of insecurity and his determination to help others while coping with all his own problems silently and alone.

The entirety of the Stan "experiment" is not funny to me; when Lila told Diego in an insensitive and even almost snide way, about Stan's real identity, and he stuttered for the first time since Season 2 (the person who made him stutter last time was REGINALD, so let the implications of THAT sink in), I think my heart shattered into a thousand pieces. I admit to personal bias here: I'm an educator, and I work with kids who have disabilities on the regular, and I can tell you that that moment was indicative of major problems in that relationship. Diego stutters when he feels unsafe, when he feels undermined, when he feels insufficient. Lila is brusque and impulsive; she is insecure and will risk other people's wellbeing, their feelings, to make herself feel more secure--the reason why she hid her real pregnancy from Diego until she could "confirm that he could handle it." As much as Diego hates talking about things, that's what he needs, and Lila doesn't talk, she just acts, and often selfishly. She really is not equipped, because of her own (entirely valid) issues, to take on a romantic partner that way.

I'm not saying that Diego is a saint or that Lila is despicable. Again, I love and enjoy their characters, separately. I'm saying they both need and deserve to heal, but don't have what each other needs. Unfortunately TUA has never prioritized the pursuit of healthy relationships or healthy emotions. The series is too saturated in bitter gallows humor and the articulation of the whimsically, satirically bizarre. But that means Diego and Lila are likely to continue to be a canonical couple, and I genuinely fear that this will prevent either character from experiencing the sort of personal growth that we saw in Klaus, Viktor, and Luther this season (or even Allison and Ben, albeit backwards, in their case).

I think for a lot of Diego and Lila fans, part of what convinces them that she fits in perfectly is that she's the same kind of fucked-up as the Umbrella siblings are, so it's easy to imagine her as "part of the family" (according to Five and Klaus). Ideally, imho, she would become a much better sibling than in-law.

So yeah. I felt as irritated as you did, by that scene. It was controlling. Lila needs to let Diego make his own decisions. If HE wants to tell Klaus to fuck off, fine. They're siblings, and Diego has known Reginald as long as Klaus has, and has the right to make that call, about how much he wants to be exposed to their toxic father figure. That isn't Lila's call to make. Nor does she have the right to threaten one of Diego's loved ones with unending physical and emotional torture.

I know Diego's not great at self-preservation, but no relationship works if one partner calls the shots for the other, without involving them in the decision making process of their own welfare.

And I don't dislike or blame Lila for this. I blame the writers who thought that scene would be funny and that that dark humor overruled any problems of characterization that it might cause. Humor at the expense of characterization is one of my top five pet peeves of fiction, lol. Grrrr.

Tags, Why and how they are used.

(A Fandom PSA)

Alright, I have something to talk about. Tags. Tumblr tags are a way people can filter what they see. This means they can choose what to see and also what not to see. We all use them, and as social media users, we must properly tag things. I am sending this out to particularly the QSMP fandom since it is my current main fandom but this is the same across the site.

(This post was something I've been meaning to make since some of the issues with a certain former qsmp cc. That topic was incredibly triggering for many including myself and I was very discouraged by the lack of proper tagging over the situation. This is also a sort of guide for any new community members, especially with the new member set to arrive this Saturday and the fact that many qsmp admins are now on Tumblr and understandably may not want to see everything on here. I hope this will also serve as a reminder to anyone who sometimes forgets to properly tag. Please take care of yourselves and others as always <3)

What are tags and what are they used for? (the basics)

Tags are a feature on Tumblr and other forms of social media to distinguish between types of content. By many they are also used to hide certain triggering topics with tags such as "tw blood".

How can you block tags? Why?

blocking tags hides any posts labeled with that tag and you can block it by going to the main Tumblr settings and adding it to the "blocked tags list". You can block any topics you find triggering or that damage your experience on the platform. For example, I have certain blocked tags such as "Fandom crit", "NSFW", "/neg", and "Qsmp neg". I have blocked these tags and others for the simple reason that I find the posts labeled with these tags make me upset and can ruin my experience in the fandom or while watching content. Doing this is not avoiding a topic, it is not being "closed-minded", it is simply improving your mental health by choosing what you are exposed to.

The Issue.

Unfortunately, tags have to be added by the post creator to be blocked and so there becomes an issue when people do not properly label posts. Luckily this can be easily fixed if you as a poster simply always properly tag your posts. So please, tag your posts properly. Tag the trigger warnings, tag the tone indicators, tag at the very least the main topic. And please, never tag something as a different topic. The tags are here to help us be organized and stay safe, thank you.

Some tips!

Often people will use tags that are trending to spread their content. This is a bad idea and will most often just get them banned but to prevent seeing some of it I recommended blocking one of the common trending tags (one use don't follow). Also if you see something blatantly miss tagged feel free to block and or report the person (especially for anything nsfw as they often use this technique)

Conclusion

Please properly tag things, it helps everyone stay safe on this platform and irl. If you have topics you don't want to see please block them for your own mental health.

I went and reread Young Avengers: the Children’s Crusade and while I did enjoy the big Eisenhardt-Maximoff-Shepherd-Kaplan family reunion, I did not enjoy Wanda calling herself the g-slur at one point, yikes. Like, that is not what I mean when I say I’d like the fact that Maximoff twins are Romani to actually be included in comics. 

Honestly, I’d love for Marvel to hire a Romani writer to do a epic family saga about these characters and respectfully explore their heritage, even though I know it’s highly unlikely for several reasons–like the fact that Marvel is trying to pull a weird retcon where Magneto isn’t Quicksilver or Scarlet Witch’s father or the fact that I don’t actually know who could write that. (I think Seanan McGuire has mentioned having Romani heritage and has written for X-Men before? But I have no clue if that’s something she could or would want to write.)

Here’s the thing.

It’s not that I’m against the concept of a character “forgiving their abuser” in fiction. The problem is when stories IMMEDIATELLY jump to that part, when what should actually happen is we see said abuser realise the damage they’ve caused, they work to change themselves, they sincerely apologise to their victim without expecting any forgiveness or trying to guilt them into understanding ‘they were hurt too’, and they then allow the victim to proceed as they wish, whether it’s leaving it at that and slamming the door on their relationship forever or it’s deciding to start a fresh while still being aware that the abuser needs to regain their trust, it’s not just going to be given instantly.

And if the victim does decide they don’t wish to forgive then they are not painted as ‘cruel and heartless’ by their own friends/found family for it or told to get over it, in fact they’re supported even if the other person feels they might have acted differently, they still respect their loved ones decision, as does the abuser.

i am seeing media using his wonderful growth this season to justify shitty things he did to k.laus, f.ive, and v.iktor in season 1, and i genuinely feel that does every character involved a disservice. he was really struggling still in season 1, to be Reginald’s number one, to remain in that toxic and self-harming role, so really, it’s okay  to admit that he’s changed for the better!!! that doesn’t invalidate ANY of his growth!!!! on the contrary, it puts it in higher relief!!!

Okay so i'm having a time and a half wrapping my head around sherm as like... a Regular Army man. (and his still being narratively 'good'). A while ago you mentioned M*A*S*H as a liberal war fantasy so I figured: penny for your thoughts?* (*this is me just having watched the movie and having some opinions about it and thinking about vietnam-adjacent, anti-war media anyways..)

Under the cut cos I rambled like mad. TW for mentions of homophobia, sexual assault and racism.

So to start: I hate the movie. It’s interesting to compare it to the show (and how even in the pilot where Hawkeye is at his most movie-ish - hell season one where he comes out so many times yet still weaponizes homophobia to get what he wants - he’s still *different*), and where the show started, the similarities/differences and how it grew up. But Hawkeye and Trapper laugh about the latter trapping a girl, humiliate Houlihan to triggering levels who barely is on the radar enough to be given a first name, and maybe it’s me being coddled and white, but I feel like no matter how much more likely it is that they would be the fifties men instead of the can be shitty but hey they’re lovable (more on that) characters of the show, being anti war doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme if you hate women that much?

So the actual show. It being a liberal fantasy sometimes is comforting (who wants to see Hawkeye deal with the fact that the fifties knowledge of sexuality meant if you were open then you were shunned by other gay people? not to mention it’s lovely that Klinger is so accepted and that after Frank, Margaret can have as much fun as she wants with no awful nickname.) and like I said, I would much rather have the Trapper and Hawkeye who dance together and ride ponies off into the distance than “don’t let him kiss you Hawkeye” “wouldn’t you be upset if you were [gay], Hawkeye”.

Plus it can use liberalism to its advantage! Maddie did a great meta on Hawkeye being naïve for In Love And War, I love Commander Pierce for how easy the pacifist liberal can fall into military if you stress him enough, I really do wish Oliver had more to do in The Moose but for setting up Hawkeye being a self righteous white boy in over his head it does the job, and Guerrilla My Dreams goes hard in calling the Americans out. 

But there’s things like:

Frank’s queer coding in comparison to Hawkeye’s. Hawkeye... has his own issues, he’s predatory (which is seen as jokes but both early seasons and later seasons have him as “he can convince anyone to do anything” in a sex context, as just one example in season ten) and while it’s also deconstructed cos Massive Abandonment Issues, there are a lot of references to the Promiscuous Bi trope, with plenty of trauma jokes about being coerced himself. Being a bi a lot like that I can enjoy it and crit it, and he’s human with a lot of good qualities, but back to Frank.

Frank is pathetic. He’s the one who homophobic generals assume is gay, giggles about what communists do to women who don’t talk and wants to see Hawkeye having a fate worse than death, calls his wife and Margaret mommy, we’re supposed to laugh at him for having his toenails painted, and unlike Hawkeye’s loving if co-dependent relationships with men and women on equal level (Carlye has the same effect as Trapper and so on), he only snivels about kissing boys and hoping the teachers didn’t see him.

The racism! Altman can fuck off with his bad faith takes because it’s not like his movie even tried, but Oliver and Ginger disappear, the portrayal of South Koreans ranges from patronizing to just outright offensive, and unlike misogyny where Hawkeye and company have to continually face up to their shit, the racism is a lesson of the week for guest stars, and the racism that Klinger gets is an occasional “aw I’m sorry” (red/white blues, why is Hawkeye suddenly military and more importantly why is he not beating himself up over it).

But onto what you were actually asking me about, Potter vs Henry. A lot of it is exacerbated by the reddit/militarybro part of fandom. Potter is competent, doesn’t have a lot of flaws, and that’s really just it. That portion of fandom prefers “a decent military man”, while Henry openly doesn’t want to be there, so Henry is remembered as a blundering idiot, when really he was just anxious and never wanted to be known as “colonel” anyway.

One last thing: Frank vs Charles. Frank is easy to beat, one note, pathetic like I said, and I really do prefer Winchester. But also Winchester is the “decent republican” trope, who treats Klinger badly and who I’m pretty sure has praised eugenics, but he has enough soft moments that you still enjoy him. Or I do, and I’m mad at myself for it.

LJ was my initial experience of examining how fic fits into these huge gaps left by conventional writing, media and daily IRL conversation/education - the kind of healing that fic can bring to both individuals and a collective body of both knowledge and healthy questioning of assumptions about sexuality as a whole.  I mean, the kind of absolutely common place knowledge about consent, power dynamics, experimentation to determine what one’s own sexuality looks like, and the the options available is extraordinary.  To have that breadth and depth of knowledge presented in an often beautifully creative format; where you could discuss with the author and other readers anything included in the fic and what it meant to both literature and real life, as well as all things fannish that one’s wild imagination could come up with…. good god what I would have given for that information as a teen.
