In a mother’s womb were two babies. One asked the other: “Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.” “Nonsense,” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?” The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat with our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.” The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.” The second insisted, “Well, I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.” The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover, if there is life, then why has no one ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery, there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.” “Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.” The first replied, “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists, then where is She now?” The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by Her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. This three piece set of Masterpiece Buddha statues includes a Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha and Medicine Buddha.

The Buddha Shakyamuni, at the moment of enlightenment, invoked the earth as witness. This is indicated by the fingers of his right hand which spread downward in bhumisparsha mudra, "the earth touching gesture". As the Buddhist sutras narrate, the sun and moon stood still, and all the creatures of the world came to offer respect to the Supreme One who had broken through the boundaries of egocentric existence. All Buddhist art celebrates this moment and leads the viewer toward the Buddha's experience of selfless and unsurpassed enlightenment. Amitabha is the most ancient Buddha among the Dhyani Buddhas. His face conveys a gentle inward expression. Through his knowledge of discriminative wisdom, a Bodhisattva understands the empty nature of all sentient beings and develops great compassion for them. This is the dhyana or meditation of Buddha Amitabha.The whole of the right hand is cradled by the left with an alms bowl resting in his palms. Here the hand gesture, representing meditative equipoise, represents the unity of wisdom and compassion. He is holding his identifying attribute, the vase of elixir (kalasha). Amitabha is the head of the Padma, or Lotus family. The Medicine Buddha, also known as Bhaisajya Guru Tathagata or the Master of Remedies is seated in dhyana asana or meditative pose. In his right hand he holds a sprig of chebulic myrolaban, whose fruits are considered a panacea in both Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine. His bowl contains three forms of healing ambrosia to cure disease, prolong lifespan and illuminate the mind.

All of the Buddhas have the distinguishing marks that designate a Buddha's celestial status, such as the cranial bump (ushnisha) and the conspicuous mark in the middle of the forehead (urna). They wear distinctive robes elaborately decorated with elegant flowing floral motifs. They are decorated with the eight auspicious symbols: the parasol, the golden fish, the treasure vase, the lotus, the conch shell, the endless knot, the victory banner and the wheel.

There are 2 separate pieces to each statue; the Buddha and its single lotus base. These copper statues are fully gold plated with 24k gold and then hand painted.

These pieces are unquestionably contemporary masterpieces!

as individuals we can take ownership of our own healing to transform our pain, to relieve our suffering. however, it seems to me that systemic, societal, or collective harm requires acknowledgment of the harm done and some form of accountability in order to heal. we’d rather slap a band-aid on where major surgery is needed and then move on. it may be easier, but it isn’t healing.

may we scrap the band-aids and be willing to do the difficult work needed.
