Journal #1: Megaman ZX Advent is the best low-key Megaman game.

Let’s get straight to the point, shall we?

Mega Man ZX Advent was one of those Mega Man titles that you have probably never heard of. In fact, the Mega Man Zero series never really took off, as clearly stated by their pale sales both locally and internationally . But you should never judge a game by how old it is and how well it sold. In the video game world, there are plenty of gems that have been discovered and some that have yet to be, leaving us with a sense that we’ve only scratched the surface with how saturated AAA video game titles are in the media.

John Silvia, freelance writer wrote a piece for IGN not two days ago stating how the release of the Mega Man X Legacy Collection brought back the memory of how Mega Man ZX Advent is, in his own opinion are even better than the acclaimed Mega Man X series, and he is right. The game has set itself apart in terms of the many customization aspects of bio-metals and how to acquire them and also taking what made the Mega Man X series successful and building upon it. 

The game in general has the same feel as some of the past Mega Man Zero games. Instead of playing the titular hero, Zero, you play as either Grey or Ashe, depending on which gender you chose, and go through a set of events that occur after the past conflicts during the the last game, Mega Man ZX. 

In terms of gameplay, all Mega Man games, with the exception of a few, usually play as a two-dimensional side-scroller with the intent of going from point A to point B as efficiently as possible whilst avoiding the multitudes of enemies, mini-bosses and the eventual final stage boss at the end of every area with you collecting their respective bio-metal which can change your visual appearance and give you abilities that help you progress further in the game. The amount of bio-metals you can collect is already tantalizing in and of itself. However, how you acquire such coveted abilities isn’t always as simple as encountering them or defeating the eventual boss. Certain bosses that you can acquire bio-metals from have certain weaknesses which make the battle significantly easier, but risks you damaging the bio-metal and not having the full potential realized after acquiring it. You can always repair the bio-metal through Fleuve’s lab which is the easy way to acquire it but the more tedious way in realizing its true power or you could attempt to battle the boss again and beating them a more creative way to earn a higher grade bio-metal without the aforementioned grinding to repair it. 

Mega Man ZX Advent also took the best aspects of the Mega Man X series and the previous Mega Man ZX and improved upon the shortcomings. You have the ability to kick off of walls to traverse higher platforms, utilize the various bio-metals extra abilities that help dash in different directions and traverse adverse terrain, which may feel like ability hunting in a certain order is needed, but is traditional to the majority of Mega Man games. The action on moving, dashing, jumping and combat still feel as fluid as introduced in the past iterations of the game. They even improved upon the map system which was a serious issue with the previous Mega Man ZX game and made it easier to navigate and even added voice acting which added to the overall experience of the game. 

I will say that the learning curve and the difficulty level for this game is significantly higher than most other forgiving platformers that each have their own way of offsetting this but most true Mega Man fans already know how difficult the franchise is inherently. It’s the accessibility, customization and the challenging nature of this game all working in tandem that makes it the underrated hero of the franchise.
