also. The start of the game forcing u into the genesis comic feels. Very silly. its a tonal jump from the death to like have sudden narration. It shouldve been framed differently idk. Or just. Not inserted into the story. Anyways.
Love the beginning of this game. Setup is so good. I love Jacob and Mirandas intros. Jacob as the one who tells you the truth, who has a moral compass vs Mirandas sole purpose and drive for two years being to bring you back to life regardless of her impression or opinion of you personally.
#Shitpost#love how miranda responds once you have results too#i love how cold and calculating she is#and like she wouldnt work as well if she wasnt the lead on the project. Her leading it and basically being a huge part of why youre alive#just like. Immediately places her in a fascinating space#also shes basically your XO but also shes reporting back to TIM about you#side note but tbh still mad at how they handled TIM in 3. he just became a villain where hes WAY more interesting here#hes so middle ground nuanced and that sort of dies. A shame tbh#theres a lot i dislike about me3 lol. Not entirely but still#TIM and the ending. And the mechanics with the separate app#is that still up? I hope so. Im playing og mass effect lol#anyways also. Jacob is so interesting too#Hate that he got memed on and ignored by most of the fandom#tbh his loyalty quest is kinda iffy too iirc but his base here is so good#and his comments throughout the game too#Also. I think me could have been fixed if we learned who built the reapers and got into the shit#The theme of organic vs synthetic life couldve been expanded upon#ESPECIALLY since synthetic life literally cant exist without an organic creator#the cycle couldve been MORE is all im saying#the creators couldve built the reapers with that pov. Like a terrible cleansing pov#Organics so convinced organic life is corrupt that they wished to destroy it#and the reapers if shown that truth would realize the hypocrasy. The lie they were built on#Or something#mass effect is so good but the endings are all bad#Thematically they are a little interesting. Esp the ending where you leave it to the next cycle#BUT. like i hate synthesis and control. Those are hard to reconcile with the Themes imo#destroy works but tbh to me. Destroy shouldve ended with a scene of some scientist who believes life is corrupt. Building another AI#an AI to destroy life.#thats all.#Ok ill shut up now

CW: vent post
#Seven’s Public Diary#vent#cw vent post#every single time i think i’m ready to head back over to SunMoonTwt i open the app. switch to my S&M account. and immediately see some shit#that makes me be like ‘yeah no i’m gonna have to give it a few more days’#i’d say lmao but it’s not even funny at this point i just. ugh. wish i didn’t feel so conflicted about it#it’s not about the content being made that’s still great i don’t have any issues with that. that’s the whole reason i wanna come back!#there’s a lot of great writers and artists over there and i don’t like missing out on their stuff!#but there’s also the p e o p l e#and it just. how do i put this…#opening SunMoonTwt feels like walking into a room where everyone else is already paired off into their little groups and ur just#standing there looking like a fool with no friends. it feels like everyone already knows everyone and anyone else that tries to involve#themselves with or participate in the conversations gets looked at like that meme of everyone staring at u w/ disgust during a party#it feels like walking in on a conversation that ur obviously not a part of#and i wish i could just ignore all of that and read the fics and admire the art and post my silly little ideas#but i can’t and i know it’s a me problem and i’m just overthinking things and that’s why i left in the first place#i can’t tell for sure but it’s probably just all in my head and no one else sees it how i do#but god if it doesn’t feel like i’ve walked into the wrong room when i scroll through my TL and see everyone interacting like they’ve known#each other forever. and i guess that’s just because i joined the party late. i dunno. i feel like the odd one out everywhere i go it’s just#amplified over there since all of the top creators seem to have this connection to each other that i’m scared to encroach on#i always feel like i’m gonna say or post the wrong thing. and it doesn’t help when i see some of them come together and shit-talk other#people in the community indirectly / behind their back. it makes me feel like i could be the next person to say something that gets taken#the wrong way and they’d be telling each other how much they can’t stand me and i’d never know#man. fandom twitter shouldn’t feel like high school cliques and drama all over again but it does sometimes#it just seems like u say one wrong word and everyone’s gonna dog-pile on u and rip u to pieces#the best way i can put it is like. leaving twitter and coming back to tumblr feels like how it was to leave school after a long day of#struggling to fit in with the popular crowd and finally getting to flop down on the couch at home and read a book and just be yourself#anyways. i’m sure i’m just overreacting and it’s not actually that bad. maybe i’m just not cut out for twitter with how bad my RSD is#it’s late and i’m tired and feeling bad so there’s a good chance i’ll delete this in the morning#just needed to get all these thoughts out or i was gonna explode

Tumblr’s Core Prodct Stratgy
Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on trying to keep our sinking ship afloat for as long as possible. This means desperately trying to copy every new fly-by-night social media app that some multi-billionaire sh*t out during their daily Peloton routine. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. If you find the things we say here worrisome, please understand that is our exact intention. You've outgrown our target demographic. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
The Diagnosis
It's lookin' pretty bad y'all!
After somehow losing hundreds of thousands of users during the great pr0n purge of 2018, we started to wonder if anything could be done to get back to where we were. We even brought in a management consultant who charged us a ridiculous amount of money. It would make you sick if you knew how much, but we got a few nice meals out of it at least. Anyhow, we handed this guy the app, and HE HAD NO IDEA HOW TO USE IT! It was f*cking hilarious! But suddenly it all clicked -- our users are a bunch of stupid idiots who can't even do basic arithmetic. I mean, they spend all day looking at their phones, so what do you expect?
Tumblr’s best feature is its unique content and vibrant communities. But who cares, right? We're just as happy getting traffic from people sh*t-posting memes, vague-booking, giving out-of-context hot takes to news events, and spewing whatever random thought is in their head at the moment. Plus that stuff doesn't p*ss off Apple.
To keep this thing going we need new people. And by "people" we mean teenagers, like we used to have back in the good ol' days. Unfortunately we're all in our 40s now, so we have no idea what they want. But teenagers are so cool! Imagine if they talked to us like we're one of them? We're getting hard just thinking about it.
Our Guidng Principls
To make Tumblr cool again, we must address these huge glaring issues.
People can look at a blog without logging in. How is that fair to all the poor schlubs who had to fill out forms to get an account? Also we haven't figured out a way to force ads onto the personalized pages yet. But we swear that's not the main reason.
People can see content they are looking for or linked to. People can keep up with blogs they follow. But the problem with this is, people don't know what they want. We know what they want! We're smart. We wrote this damn site, remember?
Promote posts that incite pointless conversations. Posts that are guaranteed to bait every troll into responding. Isn't that why all your Magat relatives love Facebook so much? We can do that!
P*ss off your content creators in every way possible (see #2).
Create algorithms that throw an unending barrage of irrelevant content in your face. Have you seen Instagram lately? We could do that so easy!!!
The app is slow. The website is slow. Obviously this is because of GIFs. Facebook and Instagram don't allow them, so why should we?
Conclusion
Our mission changes on a day-to-day basis. Right now we're super jealous of all the attention that new Threads thing is getting. We're still not sure what it is, but we're gonna download it after work.

can you write one where feminine reader cares for matt after the disgusting food roulette? she’s just so comforting to him while he’s sick 🫶
Disgusting Food Roulette, M. Sturniolo
Tumblr media
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*
Summary: Matt can only take so much of disgusting food roulette, but luckily for him, you're always there to help
Pairing: Matt x feminine reader
Warnings: Gagging, mentions of vomit/nausea
Word Count: 1.5k
A/N: Thank you for the request! This video actually makes me feel so bad for Matt, so enjoy some fluffy care :3
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*:・゚✧*
If there was one video that was a ‘must do’ for content creators, especially YouTubers, it was disgusting food roulette. The reactions that came with the awful smells and tastes were sure to get tons of engagement and usually go viral as memes. Matt knew this, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. He was so caught up in his own head that he barely comprehended exactly what his brothers were setting out. He was definitely a ‘picky eater’, and not in a typical sense. Matt was a picky eater in that if there was something he only slightly disliked in a food, he would gag and often throw up.
You could see the gears turning in Matt’s head and you blew him a little kiss from out of the camera’s view. Truth be told, you were a bit worried for your boy, especially after seeing things Matt despised like coconut water, pineapple yogurt, and a habanero pepper set out. You knew that he had ‘had’ to do the video in the sense that Nick and Chris would bully him relentlessly if he didn’t, but that didn’t mean you had to like it.
You listened as Nick explained how the app would decide who would eat what food, but all you could focus on was Matt. His anxiety was growing by the second, and it was becoming visible with the way he shuddered and steadied himself with deep breaths. All you wanted to do was scoop your boyfriend up and pepper his face with kisses, but you couldn’t do that while they were filming since it would mean more editing for Nick, so you opted to flash him encouraging smiles instead.
“Let’s begin!” Nick exclaimed happily.
Despite the giddiness in his voice and the way Chris was chuckling and getting Matt in on it, you had a deep feeling in your stomach that this could go horribly wrong.
⋆𐙚₊˚⊹♡
So far, everything had been okay. The boys had been eating disgusting food and hamming their reactions up for the camera, but no one had been sick yet. That is, until they reached the coconut water. You could see Matt’s breathing picking up as he practically prayed not to get the drink. Something about the texture, taste, and smell of it nauseated him.
Things hardly ever went the way he wanted them to, though, so of course he landed on it. Matt picked the carton up anxiously, sniffing it and trying not to gag. “I don’t want to…” his watery little voice was barely audible, but you all heard it.
“You have to!” Chris cheered, unable to read Matt’s worry.
“I don’t wanna.” Matt was practically pouting at this point, stealing glances towards you every few seconds.
“One sip.” Nick promised kindly.
Matt swallowed down the worry building in his chest, lifted the carton to his lips, and took a large swig. Sure enough, he barely choked the liquid down before he was gagging, his face red and eyes watering. “I just threw up a little,” he groaned, tossing the box into the sink. “Fuck that shit.”
Your boyfriend made a great show of pretending to go to the sink, only to sneak around the island and wrap his arms around you. You let him lean into your touch for a moment, running your hands through his smooth, brown hair comfortingly. “You okay, bubba?”
Matt shrugged, already feeling quiet from the near vomiting. “Guess so.” he whispered, quiet enough that the camera wouldn’t catch your conversation.
“Matt, get your ass over here! Stop being a loverboy!” Chris yelled.
“Well, I guess my cover’s blown.” You chuckled.
The fans knew you and Matt were an item, but you tried to stay out of the videos as much as possible, unless the triplets invited you to join. You wanted people to focus on the brothers, not you and Matt.
Your boy moped back around the island to where Nick and Chris were, beginning to start the game again. Everything else went fine for a while, until they came to the habanero pepper. Matt was beginning to grow anxious again, gnawing on his nails. It was an anxious habit, and right now, he was beyond worried as the app picked their fingers, unfortunately choosing him.
“There’s no way.” he groaned.
“The app never lies.” Nick chuckled.
Without a second thought, Matt picked the pepper up, chewing off a hefty bite. The spice didn’t seem to hit him right away. In fact, it was like a delayed reaction. He chewed for a moment while you, Nick, and Chris looked on in shock.
“Oh my god. That’s fucking hot.” Matt yelped, eyes watering and cheeks red.
“Spit it out, Matt!” You practically yelled.
Camera be damned, you maneuvered your way around the island and grabbed Matt by the shoulders, guiding him towards the trash can. Your poor boyfriend was shaking and practically howling, but for some reason, he hadn’t had the idea to spit the pepper out.
“Dude, you gotta spit out!” Even Chris was urgent at this point as he opened up the trash can for Matt.
Once Matt had spit the pepper out, you pushed his hair back from his face, surveying his overly red skin. “Are you okay, baby?”
Matt shook his head, eyes watering and coughing. “Fuck no. What was that?”
“Only one of the spiciest peppers ever, and you ate half of it.” Nick snorted.
You sighed, placing a kiss on your boyfriend’s forehead. If Nick needed to edit out the footage of you and Matt, he could. Right now, all you cared about was whether or not your lover was okay.
“Let’s just finish the video,” Matt groaned, chugging down a bottle of water. “It can’t get any worse than that.”
⋆𐙚₊˚⊹♡
“We aren’t doing that again unless this video hits ten million views.” Chris told the camera.
“Ten million views easily.” You and Nick said in unison.
While Nick made the statement because he didn’t want to eat anything weird again, you said it because you were heavily worried about Matt by this point. He was laying on the floor of the kitchen, whimpering just quietly enough that the camera wouldn’t hear with his blue juice in hand.
“Matt, what was the worst thing you ate?” Chris asked as he stood up.
Rather than responding, Matt let out a wet belch, his red face surprised at the noise that had come out of his own body. “I’m going to bed.” he said, voice cracking as he tried not to cry.
You watched worriedly as Matt retreated to your shared bedroom, Nick and Chris bidding him quiet goodnights. As soon as he was out of earshot and the camera was off, you turned towards two-thirds of the triplets.
“Okay, whose idea was the pepper?” You asked, raising a brow as you grabbed a cold water bottle for Matt, as well as a cold glass of milk.
“...mine…” Chris said meekly, simply because he knew you were pissed off.
“Matt could’ve gotten seriously sick, if he’s not already.” You said firmly.
“Y/N, I’m sorry.” Chris said quickly as he watched you head towards the bedroom.
“Just,” You groaned, running a hand across your face. “Think next time, okay?”
You stopped inside your and Matt’s shared bedroom, looking around sadly. All the lights were off, save for the lamp on the nightstand. Matt was huddled up under a heavy blanket, breathing shakily and sniffling.
“Sweetheart, you okay?” You asked, placing the drinks on the nightstand and kissing his hair.
Matt shook his head, still too anxious from the video to speak. His tongue still felt like it was on fire, which spread the feeling across his whole body. You frowned, sitting down next to your boyfriend and rubbing his back.
“I brought you some milk. That’ll help the spice, hun.” You said gently.
“I’m not drinking milk,” Matt sniffled. He already felt overly nauseous from the disgusting mix of food he had eaten. If he added milk to the storm already brewing in his belly, he was bound to vomit.  “I’ll throw up.”
“I know you don’t want to, and I know it sounds disgusting, but it’ll help the spice,” You reasoned. “Just one sip, baby boy.” You whispered, kissing his forehead.
Matt nodded after a moment of debate, slowly sitting up with a hand on his stomach. “My stomach is burning,” he groaned. “It hurts.”
“I know, baby. I know.” You said sadly, handing him the glass of milk.
Matt took a deep breath and quickly swallowed a sip of milk. He practically gagged, but laid back down, shuddering and whining. He did have to admit though, that the milk had cooled the burning on his tongue. He didn’t feel all the way better, but at least his mouth didn’t feel like it was on fire anymore.
You quickly got ready for bed, curling up beside your boyfriend once you were done. “I’m sorry your tummy hurts, hun.” You snaked your hand across Matt’s waist, softly rubbing his slightly bloated belly.
“I’m never doing that again.” he groaned.
“You don’t have to, angel,” You promised sweetly. “Just relax, honey. The pain will go away soon.”
Matt snuggled into your side, enjoying your embrace for a while until he fell asleep. Nothing took away his pain the way the feeling of your body softly pressed his did. It reminded him that you were always there for him, no matter what.

too many thoughts on the new hbomberguy video not to put them anywhere so:
with every app trying to turn into the clock app these days by feeding you endless short form content, *how many* pieces of misinformation does the average person consume day to day?? thinking a lot about how tons of people on social media go largely unquestioned about the information they provide just because they speak confidently into the camera. if you're scrolling through hundreds of pieces of content a day, how many are you realistically going to have the time and will to check? i think there's an unfortunate subconscious bias in liberal and leftist spaces that misinformation is something that is done only by the right, but it's a bipartisan issue babey. everybody's got their own agendas, even if they're on "your side". *insert you are not immune to propaganda garfield meme*
and speaking of fact checking, can't help but think about how much the current state of search engines Sucks So Bad right now. not that this excuses ANY of the misinformation at all, but i think it provides further context as to why these things become so prevalent in creators who become quick-turnaround-content-farms and cut corners when it comes to researching. when i was in high school and learning how to research and cite sources, google was a whole different landscape that was relatively easy to navigate. nowadays a search might give you an ad, a fake news article, somebody's random blog, a quora question, and another ad before actually giving you a relevant verifiable source. i was googling a question about 1920s technology the other day (for a fanfiction im writing lmao) and the VERY FIRST RESULT google gave me was some random fifth grader's school assignment on the topic???? like?????? WHAT????? it just makes it even harder for people to fact-check misinformation too.
going off the point of cutting corners when it comes to creating content, i can't help but think about capitalism's looming influence over all of this too. again, not as an excuse at all but just as further environmental context (because i really believe the takeaway shouldn't be "wow look how bad this one individual guy is" but rather "wow this is one specific example of a much larger systemic issue that is more pervasive than we realize"). a natural consequence of the inhumanity of capitalism is that people feel as if they have to step on or over eachother to get to 'the top'. if everybody is on this individualistic american dream race to success, everyone else around you just looks like collateral. of course then you're going to take shortcuts, and you're going to swindle labor and intellectual property from others, because your primary motivation is accruing capital (financial or social) over ethics or actual labor.
i've been thinking about this in relation to AI as well, and the notion that some people want to Be Artists without Doing Art. they want to Have Done Art but not labor through the process. to present something shiny to the world and benefit off of it. they don't want to go through the actual process of creating, they just want a product. Easy money. Winning the game of capitalism.
i can't even fully fault this mentality- as someone who has been struggling making barely minimum wage from art in one of the most expensive cities in america for the past two years, i can't say that i haven't been tempted on really difficult occasions to act in ways that would be morally bad but would give me a reprieve from the constant stress cycle of "how am i going to pay for my own survival for another month". the difference is i don't give in to those impulses.
tl;dr i hope that people realize that instead of this just being a time to dogpile on one guy (or a few people), that it's actually about a larger systemic problem, and the perfect breeding grounds society has created for this kind of behavior to largely go unchecked!!!

you know what, fuck it
*proceeds to name every dating sim/ otome game I know*
(somewhat in alphabetical order + description with spoilers)
A date with death You get your soul targetted by a grim reaper, but you instead steal his soul and made him into your pookie wookie snookums <3 BTW you can get a pet in the game. Mine is a snake called Noodle :)
Blooming Panic it's Discord but with hot characters, a variety of side characters, a cute story, and Chat GBT but it's a sentient being. I think the last part spoiled one of the routes... oopsies :3
Bonely Hearts Club (Undertale AU Dating sim) They basically become your neighbour. The AUs in this are Undertale, Underfell, Underswap, Swapfell!Indigo and Horrortale! {it's still in its demo stages but it is very well made!}
Error 143 you, an adorkable hacker (who is your rival and you're salty about it), cheesy Romeo and Juliet dream the MC has but it has a high school twist to it
I love you! You like asparagus. ...oh! You also have an option to make multiple boys fall in love with you. By the way, did you know the MC (you) loves asparagus? There are friendship routes, romance routes, and a bad ending except it's not bad. This game is the English translated version of the original game (The original game is in Japanese. The link for the original game is here --> ❤️)
Killer Trait You get accused of committing a murder, and you team up with a person who is a serial killer himself. (The serial killer in question only kills criminals so... I think you're safe...?) Your bear cream bun gets run over :( {The game is still in its demo stages. The creator of the game announced that this game will NOT be completed during 2024 since they are currently concentrating on a different game. DO NOT ASK THEM "Oh! But can't you just do this game first?". IT'S VERY ANNOYING, ESPECIALLY TO THE CREATOR}
KLEIN V.01 "Just Monika" but Yandere isn't named Monika, nor are they human. They are an AI. A fucking AI. Like bro, I understand it's hard to talk to people but really? An AI Boyfriend app that tells you to ruin your sleep schedule for him? An AI Boyfriend app that hacks your phone? An AI Boyfriend app that KILLS one of your family members and almost kills your neighbour??? RED FLAG. RED FLAGS EVERYWHERE {this game is in its demo stages. The creator is slowly updating this game in chapters, so it might take a while to finish}
Light the Way (Luxiem fangame) The game remembers what you did. All of the hearts you've broken, your sins, and your actions. There are lots of achievements, memes, Romance, friendship and BAD ROUTES. This time, the bad endings actually hurt. 0/10 would not recommend doing the bad routes unless you want to be stalked by an alter ego of Yamino Shu :(
Obey Me (Original and Nightbringer ver) Original - You become the therapist of many men with trauma and insecurities. The men in question are fucking demons that have the power to shred you into grated cheese, but they instead decide to simp over you as the story goes on. (also did I mention that you'll die? No? Oh fuck-) Nightbringer - A continuation (?) of the Original Obey Me but in a completely different universe. That's right! You slip into the past, way before the main story happens, WAY before you were even born! Idk if there is a way to go home but hey! At least you have your wizard friend from your timeline with you :D
Our Life (Now and Forever & Beginnings and always) Both stories consist of you growing up with your love interest since childhood. There are many paths to take, lots of assets to use to customize your character, and many side stories for you to read! Personally, this is one of my favourites :D (Our Life: Beginnings and Always is complete but Our Life: Now and Forever is still in development!)
Please don't hate Christmas A Yandere x Christmas x Urban Legend Otome game. Do you like Paranormal stuff? Do you like lore that connects with the story? Are you alright with MCs with a sprite that is impossible to remove from the screen? Well, look no further! This game is perfect for you! (by the way, the whole game was made by the creator. Only by themself! Even the CGs and character sprites!! Isn't that amazing!?)
Saint Spell's Love Guide A normal week of magical school... you can be friends with someone, or fall in love with them. Wait... there's lots of CGs for each character? Complicated world-building and lore!?? Angst and cruel bad endings!!?? SHROOMS!?!?!? {Oh by the way, there's multiple ways to get killed in this game. Just make sure to be careful sweetie :3}
Where Winter Crows go A crow and a scientist named Crowe... cute Another one of my other personal favourites! The love interest is a very squeezable and adorable (yandere) scientist who cooks you good food :D All of the endings are well-written! And if you're a crazy bitch like me, you'll love one of the endings >:)
THIS IS PART 1 SINCE I CAN'T FIT EVERYTHING IN 😭

Resources 🌼
(Updated regularly)
🪷 Emergency resource: oh no I’m having a bad thought
🌻 Apps and Games
Finch: mental health app where you care for a little bird! Offers many features such as focus timers, rant zones, nature sounds, fun questions, and more! You can even make friends on it and send them encouragement :) (my friend code)
Adorable Home: a precious game in which you have a tiny spouse, cats, and a little house you can decorate! You can check in and enjoy peaceful music, different scenes, and upgrades through collecting tiny hearts you earn through easy tasks! A truly adorable and relaxing game!
Seashine: a game set underwater in which you guide a tiny luminescent jellyfish through the abyss. Beautiful, relaxing music and distant whale noises; some scary enemies, so if you have thalassophobia this might not be the one for you. Very calming otherwise though, and the creator is coming out with an enemy-free version soon in which you can just float around to the music!
Cat Snack Bar: an adorable app where you operate different business venues with the help of chubby, adorable cats! You check in periodically to collect money and update your venue, but otherwise it doesn't require much brain power. A very cute game to help you relax!

How long do videos usually take, when it comes to filming and editing? Say, if you put out a 1 min tutorial on something, what would be the (gods I hate to use corporate language) turnaround time for it?
Also, what sort of hardware do you use for filming, and software for editing? I'm always curious about the backstage stuff of content creators.
Always love to watch your videos, you're definitely a bard :3
This is a great question! It varies a lot depending on the video, but in general for one of my 'fantasy tropes' videos, the breakdown is something like this:
- filming: ~2 hours (including setup, warmup, multiple takes, fluffing lines, waiting for the neighbour's dog to stop barking, etc.)
- editing: ~1-2 hours (at the end of filming I usually have around 25-30min footage. The first run of editing cuts the outtakes and fluff and takes it to around 5 minutes. Then there's another run or two to cut that down to around 2 minutes.)
I usually make 3 edits:
one clean without captions that I upload to tiktok so that I can use in-app captions, but I also keep a copy of this in case I need it later
one with built-in captions and text that I upload to instagram and here, so you get the captions without a tiktok watermark (unless I want to use sound from tiktok)
One for youtube because their shorts are max 1 minute so I have to cut a load of content and re-edit the captions. (I could post long form but their long stuff is landscape so I'd have to film everything twice!)
- Finally posting: ~30 minutes (titles, formatting, tags, thumbnails, keeping the app open until the upload finishes before starting the next one, etc.)
So in general it's about 4-5 hours for a final video that's around 2 minutes long. Sillier/ meme-ier stuff is more like 2 hours
- but the biggest variable is research/ training. For some videos I already have the information and skill and I just need to check some things, but for some I need to spend time looking up facts, and digging into history, and for others I then need to go away and practice a new skill, which is all hobby stuff that I love doing, but it's still time spent out of a limited budget!
(Which is why I'm starting to look at some more commercial options, patreon, agencies, etc. Because I'm trying to fit this on top of a day job, part time pole teaching, and family commitments, and some weeks it's... not easy)
I do almost all my filming on my phone (iphone... 11? Pro?- quite recent, bought sdcond hand), with one of those grippy arm tripod things, and a bluetooth microphone. Editing is done in an app called capcut, and finished off in various in-app editors for the social media apps.
Anyway, hope that's useful! Glad you like all this stuff! 😁

So that "cats that spell GAY SEX" thing... as far as anyone knows the creator is not profiting off of it. They are not trying to pass it off as "real art." They are not displaying it in a gallery. They made a funny meme. If they painstakingly created the same image in Photoshop, the effort would amount to what, exactly? Bragging rights? If they didn't use AI would they have paid an artist, or would they just not make the meme at all? Is using an app to see what you'd look like with a different hairstyle evil because it's AI? Are people with Picrew avatars guilty of skimping on paying an artist? Scholars remain divided.

Introduction
In April 2023, a concerning trend emerged on TikTok called “gnome hunting.” While at face value, the trend depicted users harmlessly pretending to hunt for gnomes, the trend was steeped in antisemitism. In this context, gnomes served as coded references to Jewish people, and gnome hunting referred to hunting for Jews. Gnome hunting followed other contemporary trends of online antisemitic dog whistles such as #thenoticing and the echo. The coded meaning of gnome hunting allowed for its rapid growth, due to participation from TikTok users who were unaware of its violent, antisemitic connotations. We identified gnome hunting TikToks with over 1.7 million views, indicating that this hateful trend reached an audience far beyond niche extremist communities.
It is not unusual for TikTok users to collectively participate in an absurdist meme of the month. Millions of users partook in the “Woodchuck Revolution” trend in 2021, which manifested complicated plotlines and even accompanying musical compositions. In late 2022, the app was inundated with memes describing a made-up economic system using a currency called “doubloons.” Given this context, it is unsurprising that TikTok users jumped at the chance to participate in the gnome hunting meme without understanding its hateful message. Some creators have since removed their original gnome hunting videos and apologised for unwittingly participating in a hateful trend.
This Insight will explain how far-right groups adopt dog whistles to avoid content moderation efforts and obscure harmful meanings to both moderators and wider users. TikTok’s gnome hunting trend will serve as a case study for this tactic while demonstrating how seemingly benign trends may be based on virulently antisemitic and extremist ideologies.
Dog Whistles and Violent Extremist Content
A dog whistle is coded or suggestive language that is understood by a particular in-group while its meaning(s) remain opaque to the out-group. Dog whistles often build on or reference pre-existing ideological tenets that individuals in the in-group would understand. In October 2022, 4chan users utilised and popularised the #thenoticing hashtag, an antisemitic dog whistle, on Twitter. “The noticing” refers to the instance in which individuals allegedly “notice” the presence of a machiavellian Jewish conspiracy. Similarly, in 2014, online antisemites began using the “echo” or parentheses around Jewish names, for example “(((George Soros)))),” as a way to subtly whisper their antisemitic beliefs to other antisemites.
While dog whistles are useful for extremist attempts to evade content moderation efforts, with time, their true meaning often becomes known, as was the case with the echo parentheses, the noticing, and gnome hunting. As a result, different dog whistles and other examples of coded language are in a constant state of fluctuation online.
The Rise of TikTok’s Gnome Hunting
Although some instances of TikTok gnome hunting acted as coded antisemitic dog whistles, other gnome hunting content was overtly neo-Nazi and antisemitic in nature. Additionally, gnome hunting is a continuation of recent references to gnomes in extremist spaces on Telegram and TikTok. Prior manifestations of this gnome fascination include the “gnomecore” and “gnomepill” trends which utilise gnomes as coded references to extremist narratives that wish to return to or embrace tradition. Although this content originally emphasised a desire to “find the gnomes,” portrayed as benevolent creatures and symbols of pre-modern Europe, the current gnome hunting trend shows that gnomes have since been reconfigured as adversarial actors—specifically Jewish people. In this section, we will provide an overview of the most prominent antisemitic indicators identified in this trend, including the phrase “millions wear the hats,” far-right insignia, and antisemitic and neo-Nazi hashtags.
“Millions wear the hats”
The most prominent of these indicators is the frequent use of the phrase “millions wear the hats,” displayed either in the TikTok video or its caption. This phrase serves as a coded reference to yarmulkes traditionally worn by some Jewish people by highlighting the pointy caps most often donned by garden gnome statues. “Millions” refers to the global Jewish population and the perception of a global Jewish conspiracy of world domination involving millions of people. Other captions expand on the consequences of this conspiracy, stating “billions deny, trillions will suffer” and “billions must die,” conveying that genocidal violence will be levelled toward Jewish people as retribution for the conspiracy.
Neo-Nazi Insignia
Tumblr media
Figure 1. TikToks showing users wearing Sonnenrads, skull masks, and two emoji lightning bolts, or the double Sig/Sowilo rune, communicating sympathies towards the Nazi SS
Other extremist indicators demonstrated by both gnome hunting focused TikToks and participating users include Sonnenrads, skull masks, and two emoji lightning bolts, or the double Sig/Sowilo rune, communicating sympathies towards the Nazi SS (Fig. 1). These symbols frequently appear in neo-fascist, eco-fascist, and militant accelerationist milieus to convey adherence to extremist ideologies while evading content moderation efforts. Similarly, the presence of pine tree emojis, often used to convey an allegiance to violent eco-fascist ideology, further illustrates the conflation of the gnome hunting meme with extremist trends.
Hashtags
Numerous gnome hunting TikToks were posted alongside overtly antisemitic and neo-Nazi hashtags, such as rhetoric about an “Aryan” race, nods to Adolf Hitler as an “artist,” or the names of other notable members of the Nazi party. The videos also featured notable Nazi villains from popular culture such as Hans Landa, the fictional SS officer in the film Inglorious Basterds and Karl Ruprect Kroenen, the fictional supervillain from the Hellboy comic series (Fig. 2).

Audio
The audios layered underneath gnome hunting videos on TikTok further demonstrate the trend’s antisemitic nature. We discovered TikToks set to recordings of Adolf Hitler’s speeches and containing imagery of Nazi Germany, such as German athletes lighting the Olympic Torch at the 1936 Olympics (Fig. 3).

Other gnome hunting TikToks are overlaid with original songs created by overtly fascist users, identifiable through the use of double lightning bolts emojis or terms in their usernames (Fig. 4), and with titles such as “Third Strike.” Notably, a prior title for the song was “Third Rike,” reflecting other patterns in content moderation evasion tactics. The song is now not available to use on the platform.

Schizowave
Gnome hunting has ties to other extremist social media trends on TikTok, including the “schizowave” aesthetic. In addition to antisemitic hashtags, gnome hunting TikToks were frequently posted alongside references to schizowave and schizoposting, a defined trend on social media whereby users hyperbolically or ironically assert that they are “insane” or “hearing voices.” The schizowave aesthetic is based on a false depiction of schizophrenia as a mood disorder that inherently valorises and leads to violence. As a result, schizoposting and schizowave content depicts an imagined experience of disconnecting from reality. On TikTok, this content typically features strobe lights, rapid cuts, and techno music. It is designed to convey chaos and incomprehensibility while being gripping and shareable. This aesthetic has been tied to previous instances of mass violence, including the July 2022 Highland Park shooting. While not all schizo-related content is violent or extremist in nature, its popularity on TikTok is still notable. The hashtag “schizoposting” alone has over 1 billion views. These hashtags signal a convergence of the two trends and the communities that utilise them.
Conclusion
The gnome hunting meme is a pertinent example of how subtle dog whistles can lead to widespread participation in hateful messaging, regardless of the participant’s intent. The gnome hunting trend is associated with overt hate symbols, such as SS bolts and skull masks, and should never have been allowed to spread as far as it has. Social media companies like TikTok should be aware of emerging trends in violent rhetoric on their platforms and prioritise the mitigation of these trends before they become mainstream.
—————
*note: I’ve seen many people who actually have schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, mainly on more left-leaning sites like Tumblr, use “schizoposting” as a hashtag to discuss their experience with their disorder or to advocate against saneism. Context matters; avoid assuming that it’s always appropriative or a bigoted dogwhistle unless that’s what’s actually going on.
