Ouhh,,, I'm so normal about this family bro I swear,,,

I tend to flip-flop between making Rome their father or their grandfather. I usually go with the father route, but I do have AUs and storylines where he's their Nonno :)

(In addition to the point above, a plus-side of Rome being their dad is Romano gets to call him "Babbo". I also like calling him "Babbo Roma")

Romano looks the most like Rome. It's more apparent when you compare him to Rome's younger self when he didn't have as much muscle or stubble. I like to think they have a bust of his head in their shared apartment and, upon first glance, other nations often mistake it for a statue of Romano.

I mentioned this in a previous post but Romano and Rome share the same name. For the sake of simplicity, however, people usually call him Romulus.

Rome is 165 cm, Romano is also 165 cm, Feliciano is 170 cm, and Seborga is 178 cm. Romulus is very impressed with Sebby's height, and always compliments him on it. One of his favorite compliments is telling him he would make a great centurion with the right training (at which point the twins have to cut in and say no their baby brother will NOT be a soldier of any kind, thank you)

Rome is definitely very protective over his boys, which I'm sure is something their partners enjoy dealing with. I have fun imagining what his reaction would be to various partners/ships.

In the case of GerIta/ItaGer, I wouldn't be surprised if Romulus demanded Feliciano break up with Ludwig as soon as he found out he was German (as if Feliciano would listen) kdhfkj

I talked about this headcanon on my main blog (in Italian, though), but I'll bring it up here too. Rome usually spoke to his boys in some form of Latin, but he began learning Italian when Seborga joined the family. The kid was probably around 3-4 years old when Rome first met him and obviously didn't speak a lick of Latin.

Now onto some more serious stuff:

Rome lived past 476 AD. The last time Romano and Feliciano saw him was around 546, when Romulus sent them out of the city at the tail-end of a devastating siege on Rome during the Gothic Wars. They were separated to increase the chance of one child surviving- one heading north and the other heading south to their respective territories. Whether he survived past that is unclear to many nations. Some claim they spotted him in various places throughout Europe, a husk of the man he once was. Others believe he lived in hiding in the Byzantine Empire. No one is certain about what happened to him, and his ghost has a difficult time remembering what happened after the Gothic Wars.

This is deserving of its own more analytical/detailed post, but here are my two cents on what their relationship/dynamic looks like (in my mind). Though Rome loved his boys deeply, and the brothers loved him in return, life was not always peachy. There were certainly a lot of expectations put on their shoulders from a very young age. Rome had spent his entire life building an empire and a legacy, something he wanted to live on through his descendants, namely Romano. The firstborn, the fighter, and the one who commanded attention easily. The one who looked and acted the most like Rome did in his own youth. Under the right guidance, he could be shaped into a leader. However, this meant the boy was often scrutinized heavily by those around him and judged more harshly than his twin. He wasn't respected as his own person and was merely seen as an extension of his father/grandfather. Feliciano, on the other hand, was on the "weaker" and "softer" side. Rome adored him and coddled him, treated him more gently than Romano, but he didn't really respect him, if that makes any sense? So Feliciano felt the need to compete and one-up his brother to prove his own worth, even if it caused the brothers to start fighting (physical altercations were not uncommon). Romulus didn't seem to notice these issues. How could he when he was often away from home? In his eyes, his family was doing just fine. They seemed like two happy kids whenever he was around, and any fight that broke out between the twins was often chalked up to "brothers will be brothers"/"boys will be boys". These familial issues went completely unchecked for most of the boys' lives, and it wasn't until more modern times that they started to reflect on their childhood and its impact. Not all was doom and gloom in their childhoods ofc, but there were certainly quite a few issues. Like I said, this probably needs its own post kjfdgk

Your ask is about this post, right?

So looking at my examples, you can interpret it that way with some if you want, but with others...not so much.

I hope you actually want to hear me out, because this might get a bit long. Apologies in advance. 😅

-I can't imagine how awkward it'd be to view them as sıblıngs considering some of the suggestive things they do in canon. Personally, I think it'd be pretty weird to grab/tug on a sıblıng's apron when there's nothing underneath and say it "matches them well".

-If someone talks about your sıblıng being good looking, I don't think most people would get flustered enough to start sweating and trying to play it cool. I feel like the sıblıng equivalent would involve something more like eye-rolling.

-For the cake one, sure, you could interpret it as them being goofy in-universe, but from a meta perspective, putting an item that is so heavily associated with you on top of the cake seems to me like putting the wedding figures at the top. It comes off as intentional fan service, which Hima often likes to include.

-For Valentine's Day, the scene with Alfred and Arthur is paired narratively right alongside the shippy GerIta stuff. Additionally, there is a note that says this:

"In Europe, it's traditional for lovers to give gifts to each other."

"In America, giving gifts is also mainly done between lovers."

It does indeed mention male to female, but only to give cultural trivia about the difference between Europe and America. The important part is the emphasis on lovers, and we all know Hetalia doesn't shy away from same-sex shippy moments – as evidenced by Germany proposing to Italy in the very same strip. Speaking of proposals, one dynamic that closely parallels Arthur/Alfred is that of Antonio/Lovino, and Antonio tried proposing to Lovino in the manga.

I digress.

-Sıblıngs typically don't suggest ideas like dressing in sexy outfits and swaying their hips provocatively. Which reminds me, I forgot to include a similar scene in my post where Alfred intentionally has Arthur wear a Robin costume that shows off his legs. Yes, intentionally.

"Also, didn't you notice your costume is from the movie and mine is from the comic?"

Of course Alfred would notice. There's no way a big Batman fan like him would've chosen Arthur's costume carelessly, but instead of answering why Arthur has the skimpy version of Robin's costume when it doesn't even match his, Alfred instantly deflects. He then proceeds to tell Arthur to stop crouching and show – ...something. Based on what Arthur is covering, the logical assumption is that Alfred is telling Arthur to show off his legs.

-"Are you fighting like an old married couple again?" Self-explanatory. If they were sıblıngs he could just say, "Are you having a sibling squabble again?"

-Cardverse is a canon AU by Hima, and Alfred and Arthur are the King and Queen. Magical Strike is also a canon AU, in which Alfred has a fαthεr who is the company president. No other fαmiliαl relations are given. Arthur is a salaryman who simply works for the company.

-There's the scene where Arthur is dying that plays on the "near-death love confession" trope.

-Other characters comment on their relationship...

Again, if it was brοthεrly they could just call it a brοthεrly quarrel. It comes off to me more as teasing friends who could potentially have romantic feelings for each other.

-Tony sees it, too, teasingly commenting "Love me bubu. Kiss me bubu," in reaction to Arthur and Alfred's conversation. He doesn't normally say things like that, either.

-Terms like "big brοthεr" in Hetalia shouldn't automatically be taken literally. They are used in a more Japanese sense (e.g. calling a somewhat older person who isn't related to you "big brοthεr" out of respect). France calls himself "big brοthεr" to literally everyone and even Norway refers to Denmark as "brοthεr".

-Regardless of how you interpret their usage of "big brοthεr", Arthur decides against being called that right away, Alfred himself rejects the idea of it during the Revolution, and Arthur later claims their relationship is "not like that" and fumbles for a way to describe it, mainly considering himself as more of a former mentor or boss.

So I believe that after the Revolution, it's most accurate to consider them as coworkers or friends (who may or may not be attracted to each other).

At the end of the day, you can interpret it however you want. But with how often USUK fans are given a hard time for liking this ship, I wanted to point out that we're not pulling this stuff out of nowhere. It's hinted at and given shippy fan service moments just like several other ships.

I only really disagree with people constantly insisting they MUST be fαmily. Romance vs fαmiliαl are NOT the only two options. I would honestly like to see more non-shippers just let them be friends. Just because I ship it doesn't mean others have to, and just because some perceive it in a fαmiliαl way doesn't mean everyone else must view it like that, either.

And to those who do decide to hop aboard our ship, welcome! We have lots of variety to offer and are always glad for more people to have fun chatting about ideas with.

Feliciano climbed under the sheets next to Ludwig, who had just gotten comfortable a few moments before. For once both going to sleep at the same time.

It had been a very exciting birthday. A fun celebration at lunch with lots of gifts and delicious baked goods made by Ludwig. Surrounded by friends and family. Then that evening they had had a nice night in. A sweet evening of snuggling and kissing. He had even gotten some time to try out his new paintbrushes he had been gifted earlier. Painting a scene from earlier that day. He would have to finish it tomorrow though.

And maybe now he could be lucky and get even more kisses and love from his significant other.

He shifted closer to Ludwig.

“No.” Ludwig said softly, not even opening his eyes. “We have work tomorrow.”

North Italy smirked. “No, you have work tomorrow. I took the day off because I wanted to do shopping but couldn’t do it on my actual birthday cause everything is closed. Not to mention waking up that early the day after your birthday is just cruel!”

Germany opened one eye to look at him. Trying to glare but unable to as he struggled to hold back a smile. “Fine, I do. And I need my sleep.”

“But it’s my birthday.” He replied, pouting. “Can’t you stay up a little longer to kiss me?”

“I already stayed up later than usual for you.”

Feliciano pretended to be hurt. Looking to the ceiling with a hand thrown dramatically over his forehead. “Oh how will I survive without my kisses!! I will cry myself to sleep on my birthday!! So sad!! God, please send a message to my boyfriend that he needs to love me more!”

He felt a light kiss on his cheek.

“I love you.” He whispered and turned to give Ludwig a gentle kiss on the mouth.

“I love you too.” Ludwig replied, going to hold Feliciano against his chest.

He listened to Ludwig’s steady heartbeat. Allowing it to comfort him and pull him closer to sleep.

"I'm glad I got to spend today with you." He said softly.

A hand started to card through Feliciano’s hair. “I’m glad too. Even if we can’t be together always… I will always make sure we are together for important things.”

“I will too.” Feliciano said, eyes stinging with tears that wouldn’t fall. Overwhelmed with Ludwig’s love. It had been so hard in the past to truly let anyone in. Let himself love anyone truly and purely. But Ludwig was worth it. Ludwig had helped him remember that despite the risk of losing someone, these moments were all worth it.

“Goodnight liebling.”

He held a bit tighter to him. “Goodnight tesoro.”

Insight: Germany's Christmas hug is warm

[I do not normally write fic but for some reason I felt compelled to write a little GerIta fluff. Yes, the title is just a variation of one of Italy's lines from the early comics that I found hilarious.]

Germany awoke slowly. The room was still quite dark – it must be the wee hours of the morning.  As he gradually came back to himself, he wondered what had roused him.  No loud noises could be heard, nor was his brother shaking him awake.  Maybe one of the dogs needs to be let outside?  He rolled over and squinted into the darkness.  Someone is here!  He quickly snapped on his bedside lamp...

“Italy?!”

“Oh, Germany, you woke up.”

Italy appeared to be caught in the middle of taking off his coat.  And, Germany may have been sleep-addled, but he thought something sounded off about Italy’s voice.

“Yes, thanks to you.  What are you doing here, Italy?”

“Well.  Um.  I was lonely.  So I decided to come here and see you, Germany.”  Yes, his voice was definitely off.  It had wavered a bit.  Was he ill?

“You have your brother.  Didn’t you celebrate Christmas Eve together since he’s your family?”

“Well, we did for a bit.  But then he went to Spain’s place.  He won’t let Spain come to our place.  Then I was alone.” 

Italy had finished taking his coat off but stood awkwardly holding it.

Oh, Italy…He’s so friendly and gregarious.  To think of him of all people being alone at Christmas...are those tear streaks on his cheeks?

“Can I stay here, Germany?  I thought since you were asleep I would sleep, too, and then maybe I could stay for Christmas and we could have a fun day!” 

“I can’t speak for the others, but I do not think anyone will mind.”  Indeed, everyone seems to love Italy wherever he goes.  “Yes, I’m sure it will be acceptable.  You can put your coat on the chair there, and come lie down.”

Italy draped his coat over the chair, and then began peeling off his clothes.  Of course, I should have known he would climb in here naked, as usual.  Mercifully, Italy left his underwear on.

“By the way, it is very cold here, Germany.  Even inside.  Doesn’t your heater work?”

“We have had unusually cold weather this week.  And the heat is turned down at night to save energy.”

Germany held up the blankets for Italy, and even scooted over a bit to offer him the warm place where he had been lying.  Italy climbed in, curling on his side facing Germany.  Germany laid right next to him, wrapping an arm around him.

“Germany!”

“Hmm?”

“You never want to cuddle.”

“Well.  You looked cold.  And, you said you were lonely.  So, I suppose…it is like a Christmas gift from me, then.”

“Thank you for the nice present.”  Italy snuggled closer.  His skin was indeed cool to the touch.  Germany extricated his other arm and wrapped it around him as well.  He knew he was blushing, but no one could see, so perhaps it was not worth worrying over, just this once.

 “You can always come here for Christmas if you like, Italy.”

“Thank you, Germany.  Will you give me a present like this next time, too.”

“If you like.  I think I could manage that.”

“Yes, please!  Your Christmas present is so warm and cozy.”

Morning would bring another day full of activity and responsibilities – another large meal to prepare, then hijinks are bound to ensue when Prussia and Austria are in the same vicinity, not to mention the likelihood of Hungary stopping by to add to the chaotic atmosphere – just thinking about it was making him tense up a bit.  But for now, Germany decided to just try to relax and enjoy the moment.  He appreciated that, right now, what he was needed for wasn’t based on his nation’s status, or diplomatic ties to other nations, or even his own immutable “useful” personality traits.  It was simply a friend needing comfort from a friend.  Now that he thought of it, this seemed to be what Italy truly liked him for.  Which was a bit astonishing – surely many others were better at being a “friend” than he was. But for whatever reason, the mysterious Italy had chosen him. 

“Merry Christmas, Germany,” Italy said, barely a whisper as he was drifting off to sleep.

“Good night, Italy.  And happy Christmas.” 

Germany slept.

SUPER LONG ITAPAN RAMBLE INCOMING!!!!

OKAY. OKAY. its been a while since ive rambled on this account so today im going to clear up how i see itapan so that no one gets confused when i say “i dont think they would ever date” and then proceed to draw them making out or whatever.

when you hear “one sided itapan” you might think italy has the stronger feelings (because he’s the one approaching and hugging and kissing japan or whatever) but i feel that it’s actually japan with the stronger feelings.

when italy’s affectionate towards japan, its not because he’s necessarily attracted to him, but that’s just how he behaves. i think that he’s kind of trying to lead him on so japan is nicer to him. italy has been coddled his entire life like he’s been taken care of by austria and hungary and spain and france and germany and literally everyone loves him. and he KNOWS that everyone loves him so he purposefully babies himself to others so he can get even more special treatment. hes an annoying little asshole who uses his good looks and weakness to get out of trouble and i love it!!!

throughout the series (both in anime, manga, and a little in hetamyu), japan actually grows a bit of a soft spot for italy because of how weak and pathetic he makes himself seem. at first he’s polite and awkward because he idolized italy to be strong and capable, but once his expectations are SHATTERED he gradually begins to want to take care of him in a way. he doesn’t get mad at him as often and sometimes even defends him when germany is upset or lecturing him (like in hetalia fantasia). he tucks him in bed and lets him sleep on his chest and share a bed and bathe together and do the gayest shit ever. i probably would’ve thought “well thats because he’s too polite to refuse” but he ACTIVELY wants to do this stuff with him. he puts a hand on his back to keep him in place when he rests on his chest. he visits italy often and loves to cook with/for him. he wants to learn how to hug and kiss him back even after italy says its fine. he writes him letters and a SONG where he asks italy to visit him and gives him a pressed flower bookmark. japan goes out of his way to return italy’s affection and spend time with him while italy just does it because he’s italy.

i dont really think it’s a “sad” one-sided crush because in the end they’re still friends! they still both care about each other and confide in one another and hang out. italy isnt just affectionate to japan because he wants to lead him on and get more special treatment, but because they’re friends and he does still like him platonically! they can act like a couple without actually BEING one and thats insane!!! i love that shit!!!!!

ive mentioned how itager/gerita was my first hetalia ship and it still stands as one of my favorites. the problem is that im PICKY with it because i dont like a lot of the fandoms’ interpretations of them. i guess i wasnt as picky with itapan and liked it simultaneously with (although much more than) itager. but when i rewatched all of hetalia over the spring i realized how much MORE i liked itapan in the context of itager, which kind of blew my mind. like i remember mentioning to some itapan friends how i think they would never date and i still stand with that today. like italy and germany are too busy trying to win eachother over and they would just get together instead. japan actually likes his friends though and wants them to be happy so he would just go “ok” and move on while still doing all that gay shit with them. i guess jt makes itapan more of a brotp but it doesnt make it any less enjoyable for me. i LIKE to see them hanging out and being friends and dont really mind fanart where they’re dating or whatever because i can just pretend that they’re not!

anyways sorry for being a little insane i hate itapan but i actually love itapan okay i love them okay yahoo!

Hetalia fans today were so disappointing oh my god.

Today I've seen on Tumblr and Instagram many fanarts of Germany and Italy togheter either kissing or overall beign cutsie togheter. Nothing wrong right? Well... if it wasn't for the fact that those fanarts were made today to celebrate the anniversary of the PACT OF STEEL.

Are you guys serious?

I thought this fandom was over mentioning WW2 events on fanarts and overall fandom content but apparently some if not most here still do.

"It's the GerIta friendship dayy!" no... it really isn't.

To make you guys understand how bad it is to mention war or overall controversial dates with fandom ship content or overall fanarts, it's like if I make an entire full colored fanart of Russia with his sisters and the Baltics all cutsie togheter, hugging and reading stories and then SLAMMING IN THE FANART the date of when the USRR was born.

Also don't try to use the excuse that it's for "historical Hetalia content" because I don't recall the two world leaders that signed this pact doing the "pinky pwomise uwu" or kissing eachother and cuddling.

Y'all need to get a grip. WW2 relationships between Italy and Germany were fetishized enough in this godforesaken fandom, it's time to seriously stop using the excuse that it's for historical purposes and be respectful to these kinds of things. People died and many nations got generational trauma for god's sake.

Hetalians as Characters in A Christmas Carol

So it's that time of year, and every year I watch the same Christmas movies over and over again. A classic in this house, also my mom's favourite version of it, is A Christmas Carol from 1951 starring Alastair Sim. Yes, I deliberately tracked down the DVD for her one year, and ironically I now have the working DVD player in the house.

I thought of these Hetalians as these characters in years past, thinking "one of these years I'll write the full fanfiction and post it", but since I never seem to get around to it... why don't I just cast everyone below the cut here?

Ebenezer Scrooge - Switzerland. This one should be so fucking obvious.

Marley, his dead business partner - Netherlands. All about the money.

Ghost of Christmas Past - Ukraine. You know she'd be the supportive guide, leading Switzy through exploring his past.

Ghost of Christmas Present - Russia. Don't tell me he couldn't play the jovial role of a Father Christmas type figure here. Plus the undertone of creepiness for his departure scene, where he becomes anxious to get out of there before the next ghost shows up.

Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come - Belarus. She doesn't even need to say a fucking word. She'll just stand there ominously, in a black dress and a dark veil that covers her head, and terrifies Switzy into changing his ways.

In The Past...

Fan, Ebenezer's sister - Liechtenstein. Poor sweet sister who tries to bring him back home to the family. Eventually dies in childbirth, which breaks her brother's heart.

Fezziwig, Ebenezer's first employer - Spain. You know the Spaniard would be a kind employer who would throw the best work party for the holidays.

Erzsébet would be happy with the relationship when they were young and humble, but would call it quits when the golden idol of wealth takes her place in his heart.

Jorkin, Ebenezer's next employer - Austria. A man who appears wealthy and influential, but ultimately gets caught up in embezzlement and bad business. He'll get bought out by Switzy and Ned.

Fan's husband (shows up in the background for the one scene in the movie) - Prussia. Yes, I'm breaking canon rules and throwing away the family lineage. Erika marries Gilbert, and dies giving birth to their son, who you can probably guess before I mention him later.

In The Present....

Bob Crachit - France. Keep following me on this....

Mrs Crachit - England (nyo). Yes, we get our FRUK pairing, which also means....

Assorted young Crachits - FACE family! Alfred can be the young man of the house, Madeline can be the eldest daughter who had to clear snow at the school/church before running home, you know where I'm going with this.

Tiny Tim - Sealand. Given the above, this should also be an obvious choice.

Fred, Ebenezer's nephew - Ludwig. Yes, Germany is the child of PruLiech as mentioned above. The young man is very happy in life, has married for love, and will at least try every year to convince his stubborn uncle to actually enjoy the holidays.

Fred's unnamed wife - Italy (nyo). Yes, we can have our heteronormative Gerita in this too. She'll be hosting the party with Fred, and Lovino can be one of the guests.

Mrs Dilber, the charwoman at Scrooge's house - Belgium. She just takes care of the cleaning and such, tries to sell his bedsheets and bedcurtains in the future yet to come, and gets a fright when he's way too happy on Christmas morning.

Hm I'm not sure! If I had to guess it was probably something Hetalia related like GerIta or PruCan. Ashamed to admit I shipped Youtubers when I was younger so maybe something in that vein.
