I went to sit by the shore the other day and took a pic of a perfect spot for MerCaleb to perch on uwu (he’s making eyes at a certain drow, inspired by a scene from @ariadne-mouse’s mercaleb fic)

Hello, I forgot to post this singular doodle I have thus far made for the amazing fic - till human voices wake us by @ariadne-mouse.
If you love mildly horror-esque, fairytale stories of merfolk and also suffer from the affliction of wanting to walk into the ocean and never come back out, you need to read this.

A Scaled Splendor
(Part two)
MerCaleb 2 won in yesterday’s poll, so here’s a snippet as requested! :) full chapter will be on ao3 soonish
Essek does not laugh.
He doesn’t.
He holds out a determined, difficult two solid minutes before it erupts from him, the lid fully off the boiling pot.
Where Veth’s laughter had been a nearly unending well of mirth bubbling out from in between continuous maritime jokes —jokes that had continued even in her Messages to the rest of the Nein— Essek’s belly laughter is a clear bell rarely rung, a bright tickle of a sound that is more smile than noise.
Caleb loves to hear it, loves even more when he can cause it. It’s a rare occurrence and each second becomes a cherished memory. However, Caleb cannot enjoy the moment at all as he is currently flopped down in the shallow water and wondering when exactly this torture will end.

uhhh wip wursday I saw mercaleb again and got possessed
“They’re tiny…” Astrid says just as the thought hits her. “We were children.” Bren says plainly. Passing them out is an odd sort of instinctual. Of course Bren’s is the ruddy brown one. Wulf’s the grey, nearly black. And her’s pale silver. Rubbing a thumb over the small, soft pelt, Astrid is overcome with the need to cry. She shakes her head instead. “This is stupid.” “Probably.” Bren agrees and why does that hurt so much more? If it were stupid and false, then she shouldn’t have felt the things she did. There would be no reason to feel indignant at the fact that he seemed not to feel them too.

I'm pushing through coming back from a writing break, so I have decided to share a snippet from an upcoming fic: an interlude set within till human voices wake us, aka mercaleb, during the time Essek was regularly visiting the cavern in Nicodranas:
“Is there anything you miss?” Essek stared at the water droplets hanging from his fingertips aloft, each one catching in the sunlight from the cavern roof.  Tiny illuminated worlds.  He tipped his hand and let them slide down his palm. “From your time on land.” The mop of red hair pillowed under Essek’s chin shifted.  ‘Hm.  Many things.’  Caleb’s tail flicked lazily in the water at the other end of the pool.   They had been curled together there for the better part of an hour, dozing after a bout of swimming and a fresh-caught meal.  “Such as?”  Essek idly waved Prestidigitation over Caleb’s hair, drying it.  Without the water’s darkness it had a coppery sheen, and the light turned errant strands to gold.  Essek began to run his fingers through it.  Caleb’s weight melted further into him.  There were some similarities between Caleb and his sometimes-familiar, Essek thought fondly; the only thing missing was the purring. ‘Dancing.’   “Dancing?”  Try as he might, Essek had difficulty picturing it.  It was already a stretch imagining Caleb standing on feet. ‘Yes.  In the dancing-caverns.  The… 'dance halls'.  I was very bad at it.  But it did not matter.’ Water splashed as Caleb’s tail flipped again, and he tilted his head to grin up at Essek.  The sharpness of his teeth could have been unsettling, so out of place in an otherwise human face, but the crinkles at the corners of his eyes were what drew Essek’s attention now, and he grinned helplessly back.  If it hadn’t required moving from their comfortable embrace, he would have leaned down to give Caleb a kiss. “Empire dances are very… jovial, yes?  I have seen some in Nicodranas, I think.  A great deal of turning, and feet left the ground often.” ‘Ja, many of them have a lot of jumping about.’  Caleb sighed contentedly and cozied back up to Essek’s chest. ‘It is one of the activities that made me grateful for chairs.’

I have gotta ask about Beachcombing, was thinking about MerCaleb again this afternoon already
Absolutely! Beachcombing is actually my folder for mercaleb expansion ideas, rather than the title of a fic by itself. From the contents within, here's a possible snippet from Caleb's time on the shore:
Master Ikithon's stillness always makes Astrid nervous. It's easy to think his age makes him slow, but in watching the tap of his finger against the desk, she is reminded instead of spring-powered traps, ready to snap shut at the wrong move.
"Where is our guest?"
Next to her, the clench of Eadwulf's hands behind his back betrays his own unease. They both want so much to make their master proud, to impress him. This oversight is such an elementary mistake. Punishment would be logical.
"He slipped away from us in the east Candles," Eadwulf says. He swallows. "I don't think he meant to escape, he just... he likes cats, Master. He turned away to follow one and we lost sight of him for just long enough. We looked, and then scryed, but by chance we couldn’t get through.  Finally we thought it best to inform you."
How embarrassing that they required his help to keep track of a creature who only learned to walk a few months ago!  But better to be embarrassed than to lose Bren for good.
Watching Master Ikithon absorb Eadwulf's words, Astrid can feel the mechanical noise of a spring coiling tighter. Unconsciously she is tense as if to flee, though she would never.
Abruptly, he laughs. The tension shatters. "What a curious creature indeed. I will find him. You will retrieve him."
"Of course!" Eadwulf does his best to pass off a shaky exhale as a normal breath. "Of course, Master." He does not apologize for their mistake.
Ikithon seems pacified. For now.

“It is time.” With effort, Essek focused on the imposing figure of the Dusk Captain, flanked by two soldiers.  She had come to get him personally — how considerate. The meaning of her words took a few seconds to fully register.

Fanfic guessing game: shark
I have it! 😂
Essek focused on the water lapping at his skin and tried to deliberately radiate his joy into it, hoping that Caleb would sense the emotion in that peculiar fashion of his, like birds that were able to detect incoming earthquakes, or sharks smelling blood.

Hello! I just want to let you know that your mercaleb fic is one of my fave comfort fics! I read it first as it was being posted, and then again a few months ago, and I'm about to start my third reread. It's so beautiful in its imagery and I lovelovelove the push and pull of your Essek and Caleb characterizations. Your water/sea metaphors have stayed with me, I think I have "the sea reached for him as eager as a lover" brandished in my brain forever now. It just tugs at my heart so deliciously. Thank you for writing, and thank you for sharing!!
That makes me so happy, thank you Anon! Multiple rereads!! 💛 I am glad you liked all my indulgent imagery and the many ways I smushed the ocean and the wizards together. Thanks for leaving this lovely comment in my askbox, it made my day :D
There is more Mercaleb to come - I am currently working on an "interlude" ficlet set within the existing story which I hope you will like as well! In the meantime, please enjoy this silly sketch of Frumpkin deciding that while he likes cuddles, he prefers them on solid ground:

‘What of you?’ “Hm?” Caleb once more carded fingers through his hair, soft and kind and nothing that Essek deserved, for what he was considering.  ‘This thing you cannot get out of.’ Essek’s pulse jumped. Telling that story had gotten a lot more complicated in the last few minutes.
