please give an essay about this sunglasses 🙏 I love you talking about sunglasses
ok so.
the sunglasses in this picture
Tumblr media
are vintage, baby !
this is a reselling off Etsy, but they're the Oakley E Wires! (I'd have to look at the sides to see what generation lol). very European, super y2k, super sports luxe!
Tumblr media
while they're sadly not milf glasses (PLEASE get some Prada George. for all of us) they are a pair full of history!
this style came out in 1992 and slowly evolved until it was discontinued in 2005 (according to the O-Review website there was also a collectors edition that came out in 2013). It's a metal version of the eye jackets aka one of Oakley's most ICONIC frames
Before we get to that though, when Oakley started as a company, they were a motocross grip-selling company (the plastic they used, called Unobtainium, is what the rubbery part of Oakley glasses are mostly made of). Over time, Oakley shifted its main market from motocross gear to shield visors to shield sunglasses. These are what the first Oakley 'sunglasses' look like ->
Tumblr media
The pair on the right was made from a motocross visor shield, electrical tape, and a coat hanger. The pair on the left is a style called the Eyeshades, the first commercially sold version of the extremely popular modern-day Sutros.
The Sutros are an iconic sports frame and have been extremely ingrained in sports culture since they were put on the market. However, they weren't suited for ALL of sports culture. This is where the Eye Jackets come in. (We'll come back to the Sutros and Eyeshades later)
I'm sure you've all heard of Michael Jordan but did you know that Michael Jordan LOVED Oakleys? He was actually on the board of directors for a while and wore Oakleys all the time, specifically, he wore the Eye Jackets (and similar styles)
Tumblr media
if you scroll back up to the pair George is wearing, they look very similar to these! And for good reason! The E Wire is essentially the thin metal frame version of the Eye Jackets.
Ok, cool. 90s and early 2000s fashion. very y2k and we know they come from Oakley so they're sporty. epic. awesome, even. but what's sports luxe? Why European if Oakley's an American brand and why do we care about these now?
Sports Luxe is basically a style that's based on athletic gear with a sophisticated undertone. Think leggings and tracksuits. Think Bella Hadid or Billie Eilish. Think Adidas or Nike or Lululemon. That's sports luxe babey (also called athleisure). When you have a basketball game at 12 and a photoshoot at 2. That's the vibe.
Now, full disclaimer, I am American so ig I can't really speak on if the recent spark in this trend started in Europe but from my viewpoint it totally did. It's big, it's bold, it's based in streetwear, it's casual but it's not lazy, and it flexes wealth subtly which is much more common among European celebs than American celebs and influencers (imo).
We can also go back to those Eyeshades from earlier and see that those became popular in Europe through cycling. Greg Lemond debuted the Eyeshades in the Tour de France 1984 making Oakleys a huge hit in Europe. This eventually progressed and made Oakleys an iconic 80s sunglass brand.
Tumblr media
Trends did what trends do and the Eyeshades eventually took a backseat from mainstream fashion and instead became popular among surfers mostly. The trend that replaced it, was the Oakley Eye Jackets courtesy of MJ23 himself.
Glossing over 20 years of sunglass history, trends did what trends do and the 80s shield style and 90s/2000s eye jacket style of sunglasses faded into the back of closets. Until now.
The biggest modern name in bringing back this trend (via sunglasses at least) is Balenciaga. (disclaimer: I'm not getting into the whole thing with their brand, I'm sure you heard about it, I don't support the brand etc etc I'm talking from purely a fashion/trends viewpoint, which what I'm talking about was started by them prior to everything)
These are some of the most high-fashion sunglasses on the market right now.
Tumblr media
fun, right? and maybe a little familiar..................... oh wait of course those are just smooth versions of the Oakley Eye Jackets. History repeats itself.
All in all, trends move in circles, fashion mistakes repeat themselves, and this will be Dream and George in denim on denim on denim suits next time they go somewhere fancy (REAL NOT CLICKBAIT)

Todays rip: 24/03/2024
Aphex Twin Snakes
Season 4 Episode 1 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume L [Side A]
Ripped by Snowva
youtube
I suppose we'll round off this streak covering rips with sources I'm far too unfamiliar with, with yet one more that I, like Poké Village, discovered on my own. Yes, I admit it: I am uncultured, I am weak, and I am not yet properly educated on the world of Aphex Twin. Now, that's not to say that the artist hasn't had an impact on me all the same - it wasn't that long ago that I wrote about just how much the Season 1 rip Aphex affected me way back in 2016. So I do have a tenuous attachment of sorts to their music, yet its an attachment I only get reminded of through rips and other remixes. Aphex Twin Snakes is one of those reminder-rips, one I found on a whim just browsing the archives of the Volume L album - and it's an absolute banger.
I may not have actual investment into the Metal Gear franchise yet either, but its at this point impossible not to know of the most legendary music of the Solid series. There's of course the beautiful credits theme to Metal Gear Solid 2, Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday - as performed by Bob Dylan (yes, by the REAL Bob Dylan!), and the long-overdue-for-coverage main theme for the series' third game, Snake Eater - but the main theme of Metal Gear Solid 2 has always felt like THE Metal Gear theme in my head. You can immediately tell something is changed in Aphex Twin Snakes - before the elements of Aphex Twin are even implemented, sound effects from the Metal Gear Solid series are sampled to create a far more prominent "beat" for the track, sort of in the vein of Banjostruck or the various Hideki Naganuma-inspired rips a la September. It's a fantastic way to transition the rip into the more jungle-y style of the Aphex Twin track used, which is Carn Marth if I'm to trust the Wiki - but attachment or not, its novelty as a jungle remix of such a proudly-orchestral piece is appealing all on its own.
The rip sells you in just the first 15 seconds alone as a distinctly different-feeling take to the legendary theme, but continues to impress throughout. I'm always caught off guard by how hard the intentional stutter in the track at little over 30 seconds in hits, and not long therafter the sound of Snake's iconic death sound from the series is used to amazing effect to punctuate the rip's change in tone. Midway through, we're even treated to a little bit of a "dialogue" in a codec call seemingly between Snake and Aphex Twin itself, only communicating through a change in music to the track Windowlicker. This is obviously not really the same thing as something like the canon-to-the-channel dialogue in Haltmanna feat. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, but it is a really fun surprise althesame - when Aphex Twin Snakes was uploaded, we already knew that Snake was to reappear as a character in the King for Another Day Tournament, and so this little moment of interaction from the character (or the Figment, if we're to be lore accurate) feels all too fitting, its as if he himself was shocked to encounter another source in "his" own track.
After this little interlude, Body & Blood by clipping. is added to the mix, giving the rip a vocal performance quite different in tone from the rip's first half. It was the first half that sold me, and though this shift in direction is certainly a form of escalation, it is maybe a bit too drastic for me - whenever I come back to Aphex Twin Snakes, it is the Aphex Twin part of the first half that I'm most drawn to. But I'm of course althesame thankful that we even get rips with such variety and risks taken in them (sort of like Metal Gear Solid 2 itself, hm?), and that the rip knows not to overstay its welcome. Each of these three sections of the rip get just enough time to land, and all three feel polished to a sheen. This is the first rip by Snowva I've covered on here, but if Aphex Twin Snakes is anything to go by they have an absolute knack for quality - and have helped remind me of yet another incredible artist that I need to start actually listening to.

—EMERGENCY COMMISISONS.
So uh, hi guys! While I sold at a convention this past weekend and did pretty okay, most of that money went towards a few bills, paying for my table. Ect. I’m actually still behind on some bills and wasn’t able to pay for everything. I also won’t have enough for groceries tomorrow either.
I do have a queue right now, but starting next week I will be hunkering down on commissions. Most of my spare time will be working on commission work so activity may be slow.
I live as a single income home right now and my partner is having a hard time finding work, so sometimes things like this come up where we don’t have enough money for stuff.
If I can maybe *somehow* get $100-$200 by tomorrow, I can pay for groceries to last us until next pay day. I am even slicing my prices in order to get more to my queue.
I do have merch that I sold at the con too ( prints, stickers, charms, buttons ). Lots of Pokémon, some original stuff, metal gear solid, twisted wonderland and street fighter. If interested in any of that stuff please DM me and I will give you pricing + shipping.
— GRAPHIC PRICING.
Promos ( 2, 3, or 4 panels ) - $15.00-$30.00 ( depending on gif or not and complexity ) FLAT FEE OF $15 T
Post Splitters - $5.00
Dash Icon - $5.00
Icon Borders - $5.00
Icon Borders + Icons - $5.00 for the border, 0.50 0.25 cents per icon ( i will put a psd and the icons in the border for you. )
Banners (Headcanons, pinned, ect) - $10 $5 for 5 banners.
Header - $10.00 $5.00
Full Package ( everything above as a deal ) - $60 $40( only includes 30-50 icons depending on resources )
—ART COMMISSIONS.
These are much slower then graphics due to my mental health. I have a lot of examples so if interested in this I can DM you examples and my pricing list—I just can’t fit all examples here and I don’t have a proper sheet.
If this isn’t possible I’d appreciate sharing this regardless. I’m desperate and it sucks. While I don’t expect handouts, I will leave my PayPal here for those who want to help but don’t want to actually purchase anything: [email protected]

Raiden has been a controversial character since his surprise debut in MGS2. The world was outraged that everyone’s favourite badass Sold Snake had been replaced by a whiny, ineffective fop who couldn’t walk on a bit of bird poo without slipping on his arse. He was massively unpopular. Perhaps as a response to the backlash, the character returned in MGS4 as a cyborg ninja killing machine. He was still kind of emo, but now he could also take on an entire squad of bad guys. “Raiden was in Metal Gear Solid 2 is because at the end of Metal Gear Solid, Snake had become this legendary hero. It didn’t make sense to have this legendary hero start from scratch in the game, having these codec calls coming in telling him how to do basic actions. It didn’t sit well with me. So I decided it would make more sense to have a new guy come in, a newbie in the form of Raiden. He could grow with the player and look at Snake from the third-person point of view as this great hero.”

Unmute (Ch 2)
Tumblr media
Summary: Joel's journey to find Tommy is interrupted by a girl who needs help. A whole lot changes for both of them when she ends up tagging along. This Chapter: Ellie vs. Seat Belt Part II, Joel and Ellie run into trouble, and Ellie finally speaks.
Pairing: No Pairings, just Joel & Ellie
Word count: ~2k
Warnings: SA recovery, brief reference to suicidal thoughts, canon-typical gun violence, Mute(ish) character
Getting back on the road was Joel’s first priority. As soon as the sun had risen, Joel packed up camp.
“Hey, time to get up,” He called to the teen still asleep on the forest floor. She didn’t stir so he moved a bit closer. “Ellie, wake up!” He tentatively leaned over, nudging her shoulder.
She startled and gasped, her fist automatically flying up at him. “Easy now!” He caught it just before it reached his chin.
Her wild eyes landed on him.
“Hey,” He said apprehensively. “Let’s go.”
He walked back to the car and watched in the rearview as the girl rolled up her sleeping bag and climbed in the passenger side.
“Seat belt,” He murmured.
She pulled at the belt too quickly, making it lock. She tried again with more force and got stuck in the same spot.
“Slower,” He said simply.
She side eyed him and began to pull the belt in slow motion, millimeter by millimeter.
He sighed heavily.
The quiet zipping noise of the seat belt unreeling continued, full seconds ticking by. The latch scraped its way into the buckle until finally clicked. Joel glared at her as he pushed the gear into reverse and she looked out the window unbothered.
The road seemed wide open, the visibility clear to see for miles down the long stretch of highway.
They were driving under an overpass when everything went to shit.
A truck wildly screeched onto the pavement behind them. It was a FEDRA vehicle with two officers sitting inside.
“Fuck,” Joel hissed, slamming on the gas. “What the fuck is FEDRA doing all the way out here?”
Ellie’s eyes grew wide as she gasped looking in the side mirror. There was a clear look of recognition in her eyes.
“You know these guys?” Joel asked.
She nodded frantically.
“Gonna need more information than that!” Joel said shortly before a gunshot rang and Ellie jumped.
“H-He sold me,” Ellie stuttered out.
“What?” The answer only spawned a hundred new questions.
Another two gunshots had Joel swerving as one hit a back tire.
“They sell the k-kids–from my FEDRA school,” She explained quickly. The implications of her statement took a moment to hit Joel.
“Jesus Christ–” Joel denounced. More bullets flew. “Hold this,” He directed Ellie to take the wheel. There was no time for any debate, so Ellie leaned over and kept it as straight as she could while Joel picked up his rifle, firing bullets through the back window.
The blood spatter on the windshield and swerve of the truck behind them was indication enough that he’d hit the driver. The passenger fired two last shots as the truck started to drift off the road.
One of the bullets hit the remaining back tire, making the steering wheel lurch and jerk out of Ellie’s nervous hands. Joel rushed to steady it but they were already skidding. They ran sideways off of the pavement, hitting the grass and coming to the edge of the embankment. The car dove nose first into the ditch.
The explosion of airbags and screeching crunch of metal making impact with the ground was deafening. It was the last thing Joel heard before he came to, lifting his head off of the steering wheel. It took a few seconds for Joel’s mind to jolt back to life. White powder plumed in the air.
Through the thick fog, Joel saw Sarah in the passenger seat for a moment.
“Are you okay?” He asked.
Ellie coughed before replying with a nod.
Joel held onto his gun as he started to extract himself from the car. Ellie fumbled to unbuckle herself, pushing open the door enough to slip out.
Two strong arms suddenly wrapped around her neck from behind, heaving her into the grass as she screamed.
Joel instantly made it around the car, gun pointed at the FEDRA officer that was hauling Ellie up as she struggled wildly. The officer matched him in stance, assault rifle raised.
“You know how much fucking trouble you’ve caused?” He raged, out of breath.
“Wish I gave a shit,” Joel replied coldly. Joel had trafficked plenty in his life–drugs, weapons. He never claimed he was a good person. But he never trafficked people. Never children.
He stayed locked on his target but made out Ellie reaching into her pocket in his periphery, knowing exactly what she’d stashed there. She stared at Joel, a rare moment of eye contact, trying to ready him for his opportunity. He gave her a microscopic nod.
She plunged the bandage scissors into the officer’s thigh and threw herself to the ground as soon as his grip loosened. Joel took the shot, pleased to watch the life leaving the man’s body as it limply dropped.
Ellie crawled to her feet, ripping the scissors out of the man’s leg and returning them to her pocket.
The quiet stretched between them, no screeching tires or gunshots, just the sound of their own breathing.
Joel turned and surveyed the damage around them. The hood of the car was mangled and smoking, half buried in the ditch’s overgrown weeds. The FEDRA truck laid across the road on its side in a similar state.
“Fuck,” Joel sighed heavily. Here they were with two useless cars, the only functioning one left hundreds of miles behind them. “ Fuck !” He shouted into the void. “I had a perfectly good chance of making it to Wyoming and now that is gone ,” Joel seethed.
He looked back at Ellie.
“Were you ever going to mention that there were more of them? That FEDRA was going to come looking for you?!” He questioned.
Ellie just shrugged, making Joel fume even hotter.
“God dammit !”
“Go ahead, hit me,” Ellie said in resignation, almost a challenge.
Joel waved her off, scoffing at the ridiculous suggestion. “I’m not going to hit you.”
He did a double take when he found genuine confusion on her face.
“Then what?” Her voice trembled. ”What do you want from me? You don’t want to fuck me, you don’t want to hit me?” She glossed, desperate to make sense of it all.
It was still a shock to hear her voice, let alone raised, so many words pouring from her. Even worse, Joel didn’t have an answer.
“Ellie…”
“I asked you to kill me, you know I asked you!” She stepped towards him, pointing an accusatory finger, tears gathering in her eyes, “And you didn’t.”
Joel couldn’t do anything but stare, his mouth parted with not a single idea of a word on his tongue.
He doesn’t know why he helped her. Leaving her behind wouldn’t have even held a candle to some of the horrible things he’d done.
“What do you want from me?!” She pleaded, her voice shredded, “I don’t understand! I-I don’t–!”
She took a step forward, reaching to place a steadying hand on the car’s bumper. She withdrew her hand as soon as she placed weight on it, her cries spiking.
He saw the way she clutched at her wrist.
“You’re hurt,” He said quietly as he walked toward her.
“Get the fuck away from me!” She warned, stopping him in his tracks.
“Okay,” He acquiesced, backing off, “Okay.”
Her tears were clawing away at the numbness Joel had so carefully built inside himself. They left scratches shaped like Sarah. He should have comforted Ellie, he even wanted to, but he didn’t. He couldn’t. He loitered for a moment until she turned away, starting to pull herself together.
He closed his eyes, trying to exhale the weight that had settled on his chest. He didn’t have time for this.
He got his backpack and started digging through the car, deciding what supplies to take with him. He looked at Ellie’s pack, sitting in the passenger seat. He snatched it and loaded it up the same.
He found Ellie sitting against one of the car’s blown tires. He tossed her bag and it landed heavily at her feet.
Her eyes shifted in his direction.
“I’m going west,” He said. It was a simple declaration. It was an invitation. It was the best he could do.
He started walking, trying to tell himself that he was completely focused on finding Tommy.
He couldn’t explain the sense of relief he felt when he heard a pair of footsteps trailing behind him.
—--
An entire day of walking after totaling a car was not kind on his 56 year old body. He found a spot as good as any to lay down for the night.
Ellie had tucked herself behind a tree as she dug through her bag one-handed. Joel noticed she hadn’t used her left arm all day, usually cradling it against her other hand.
He stole occasional glances, unable to help his curiosity. She was taking out a bandage and starting to wrap her wrist. The fabric was unruly and she struggled to wind it with one hand. She tried over and over, clearly becoming impatient and muttering colorful obscenities. He watched her shoulders drop in defeat.
He cautiously approached her.
“Let me do it,” He offered.
She withdrew, clearly startled. She shot him with her typical side eye. He sighed.
“Do you want your hand to work tomorrow or not?” He said.
She considered it for a moment.
“I don’t like being touched,” She muttered coldly. It was the first words she’d spoken in eight hours.
He knelt down. “Yeah I gathered that,” He replied, replaying almost getting socked in the face that morning. “I’ll be quick.”
She passed him the bandage but still hesitated when he reached for it, barely allowing him to take it. He gestured for her hand and she presented it to him begrudgingly. It was bruised a deep purple and swollen down to her fingertips. He started to wrap it, beginning with fingers and working up her arm. She’d held in any acknowledgement of pain until he made it to her wrist.
“Ow!”
“Sorry,” he apologized softly, adjusting his gentle hold on her before continuing.
He fought against himself as he tried to speak. It would be much easier to stay silent than say what was on his mind.
“I didn’t kill you because I didn’t want to,” He finally said quietly, still focused on her wrist. “And being hit and being… That’s not what you’re for. To anyone. That shouldn’t have happened to you. And I’m sorry.”
Ellie stared out at the trees in front of her. Her silence was no shock, but he was surprised when she wiped away tears on the shoulder of her jacket. He tucked the end of the bandage in and got up. She eventually followed, sitting down on her sleeping bag and huddling up for warmth.
He laid out his own sleeping bag and rummaged around in his pack for something to eat.
“Fire?” She asked. He had to turn and look at her to confirm she’d spoken. He wondered if he would always be caught off guard when she decided to speak.
“No,” Joel replied as he shrugged off his coat, “That’s a bad idea.”
“Clickers?” She asked.
He dropped the coat in her lap before sitting heavily on his sleeping bag. She looked between him and the coat before wrapping it around herself.
“People.” He replied.
—--
Later in the night, he saw that Ellie had produced the same book as yesterday. She wore the same subtle smirk too.
“Go to sleep. It’s going to be a long day tomorrow.”
He switched off the lantern and turned over. The wind blew and he realized Ellie was still wearing his coat.
“Joel?”
“What?”
“Those people?” She began, “No one’s going to find us here, right?”
The fear showed only a little in her voice but it was clear in her question.
“No. No one’s going to find us here.”
A/N: Thanks for reading! Let me know your favorite line/moment/thing, it always makes my day :)

BG3 "Succubus" Bard/Warlock
Build taken from YouTube user Senpai Ziah. Note that he recommends going Asmodeus Tiefling for the sake of the level 5 darkness, but that Githyanki and Drow are also very good stats-wise. Tiefling is the best thematically. This build is equal parts theme and power.
WARLOCK, ARCHFEY
Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Friends
Spells: Hex, Charm Person
Abilities: 8 / 16(15+1) / 14 / 10 / 10 / 16(14+2)
2: Faerie Fire (though this is very optional since Hex and Darkness are also concentration spells), Eldritch Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Devil's Sight
3: +BARD: Cantrips: Minor Illusion, Mage Hand, or just whatever you want. Spells: Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Dissonant Whispers, Thunderwave, Sleep
All levels from this point on are Bard.
4: Feather Fall
5: Subclass: College of The Lore. Hold Person
6: Whatever cantrip you want. Heat Metal, Invisibility, Detect Thoughts.
FEAT: War Caster or (recommended) bump Charisma to 18.
7: Hypnotic Pattern
8: Glyph of Warding or whatever spell. Magical Secrets: Haste, Fireball, Counterspell or Darkness somewhere in there, but ideally another party member has Darkness.
9: Dimension Door, Confusion, Greater Invisibility
10: Whatever spells.
FEAT: War Caster or bump Charisma to 20
11: Dominate Person, Hold Monster, Mass Cure Wounds
12: Magical Secrets: there's so many options just take whatever.
RECOMMENDED GEAR:
ACT 1: Amulet of Misty Step (Can either get from Omeluum in Myconid Colony, Underdark (must speak to Blurg to find Omeluum) or from a gilded chest inside the Goblin Camp, I think in Priestess Gut's bedroom.)
[another Misty Step option] Disintegrating Night Walkers (dropped by Nere in Grymforge)
The Spellsparkler (reward option for saving Councilor Florrick from the burning building in Waukeen's Rest)
Blazer of Benevolence (given as reward by Volo for rescuing him from the goblin camp)
ACT 2: Potent Robe (given as reward from Alfira for saving the tieflings from Moonrise Towers)
ACT 3: Birthright (sold at Sorcerous Sundries)
Boots of Very Fast Blinking (won from Akabi at the circus, but these are pretty silly.)
Markoheshkir (found in Ramazith's Tower)

Ahoy gamers
I’m borrowing a ps3 from a friend and I’m returning it two weeks in that time I’ve decided to challenge myself to beat every MGS game In the MGS legacy collection which contains
Metal gear solid 2: sons of Liberty
Megara gear solid 3: snake eater
Metal gear solid : Peace Walker
Metal gear sold 4: guns of the patriots
I wanted to do this because one I haven’t actually played any mgs games outside of the twin snakes and I want to see what happens and 2 I need to fill free time until the 25th now the main thing I want to experience is the story these games provide and while we the gameplay is very important to these series I’m in a strict time limit here so there are the following caviates/ parameters under the read more
I will be playing these games on very easy difficulty. I know that i might be depriving myself of the challenge and reward of the gameplay but I had to make concessions for time also i was not strictly speaking “good” at the only metal gear I played so I might still be challenged
No game skips or crazy speed run tricks are allowed for the challenge. I want to get as complete a picture of each game as time allows so I won’t be doing things like setting the clock ahead for the sniper fight in MGS3 I feel like I’ve already made concessions with the difficulty and stuff like that feels a bit like cheating to me in this context
I will very likely miss certain codec calls and story beats within them. My current setup is a ps3 plugged into a dell monitor with no speakers I don’t want to have no sound at all during this experience so I’ve set up a queue of like mgs2 the movie all cutscenes videos on my phone that I can sync up and area soundtracks but because of this setup I’m at the whims of what these compilations include and I want to have sound when people talk in these games I’ll try to get everything I can but I’ll miss something’s but please feel free to mention things I might’ve missed as long as they’re not spoilers to the time point I am at in the game
Im going to be writing up little blog posts at the end of each day if the challenge containing thoughts/ funny/ moments occurrences I find notable I will be tagging these with #metalgearmania and game appropriate spoiler tags the first of these which will be a combo of day one and two will go up later tonight

This sequence (Only 4 images for the sake of shortness) is the ending sequence of Metal Gear Solid V, one that I consider to be one of the best endings ever made in a videogame, and the perfect ending for your story, the player’s story, after seeing the end of Big Boss’ and The Patriot’s story in Metal Gear Solid 4, a perfect message and display of appreciation for your service, for all you’ve done, and all you’ve grown alongside these characters, an amazing contrast to the last time the gmae acknoleged your role in the story, in Metal Gear Solid 2, back then the game mocked you, insulted you and made fun of you for not understanding what it tried to say to you, for trying to be what it warned you not to become, and many years later, it rewards your perseverance with “The Truth”, which is also this mission’s in-game name, after all these years, after everything they put you through, you deserve nothing else but The Truth, spelled out for you, alongside a congratulatory note from no other than The Man Who Sold The World, Big Boss himself, but at the same time, warning you of what lies ahead in your path should you take it.
This game’s development was full of controversies and other problems, and while that deprived the player from experiencing what could’ve been another high point in the franchise, Mission 51 “Lord of the Flies”, in a way it also enhanced the game’s message about memes (in the actual, real definition of the word), passing on your legacy and what becoming a legend really means, I guess you could say this is the ultimate “Is not a bug, is a feature”, the attempted erasure of Kojima’s name from the game serves as a perfect real life parallel to the erasure of The Boss’ name from history in the game.
Prior to my experience playing MGS V, I never thougth that a character other than a Customizable Player Character akin those in Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and many other RPG games could become a “Literally Me” character, as they are already set in stone with clear motivations, ideals and morals of their own, and while Venom Snake is quite the ambiguous character as it is supposed to serve as a Self-insert of the player just as Raiden was meant to be in his original appeareance, he is a set character that shares all the qualities of one; while the reasons why I can relate to and see this character as “A Part Of Myself” rely entirely on subjective and personal matters, I wouldn’t be surprised that many people that doesn’t shares that connection with his background and context still experiences the same feeling; I’ve always seen Naked Snake as a role model, someone I looked up to be like one day, perhaps even a “Father Figure” and Liquid Snake as a “Brother” of sorts that shares the same beliefs but with a different understanding of them, but it was only after slowly crawling thru a mud-covered marsh as DD barks at enemies to distract them, standing next to the saluting wandering soldiers whose only wish was to return back to the place they once called home, spotting for Quiet so she can clear an outpost to rescue a POW and hearing those dreadful words “We live and die by your order, Boss” during Shining Lights, Even In Death that I could relate to Venom Snake after understanding that we’ve been thru the same, despite the actual circumstances being different due to one being real life and another one being a work of fiction (despite being inspired by very real things that did happen), I don’t know if that was the intent with the character, but for all purposes, I can always say that I am Venom, and Venom is Me.

Lincoln to Helena, Helena Lewis & Clark National Forest
July 20-22
July 20
We hitched out of Lincoln with a man named Caleb, who keeps cattle up on the Lewis & Clark Pass. We hiked smooth switchbacks up and out of Roger Pass and cruised along some rolling mountains/hills. We had a 13 mile water carry to start the day; the thing about the Continental Divide is that it’s known for water flowing away to either side of the continent… so there isn’t a lot of water there. We got to Flesher Pass and had to go a quarter mile down a highway in order to get water. That’s when Greg showed up in his Toyota sedan. He was eager to help and to learn where the water source was, so he drove us to and from the water. He had a skeleton sitting in his backseat named Bernie, because he’d gotten him at or for Burning Man. Thanks, Greg!
After getting water, we ate lunch and hiked another 10 miles to water and camp. I was still having issues with my Achilles and wrapping my ankles in ace bandages. (Happy birthday to Liam and Zach!)
July 21
We got up and out early to go to High Divide Outfitters, a “gear shop” that a man named Dave runs out of his house that’s right on trail. That place was tiny and CHOCK FULL of gear! I bought new shoes — altra Olympus 2’s, so they were the model from before altra sold to VF. Owen bought a new pack, because his had been bothering him and was misaligned from his hip issues on the AT. We shipped our old gear home.
We decided to take some dirt roads as an alternate rather than take the ridge. That shaved 6 miles and skipped a 16-20 mile water carry. It was quite hot out — in the 90s. My ankles got sore midday but the pain subsided. Overall the new shoes were working out. We hiked a while with new friends Danger Dave and Wonder. The washed out road back up to the trail was STEEP! Owen exclaimed, “this is ridiculous!” and we heard a bellowing moo of agreement from one of the cattle ranging nearby. Well-timed.
We, Danger Dave, and Wonder all camped together back near the official trail.
July 22
We hiked out to the highway in order to hitch into Helena. On the way, we saw a big, old wooden railroad truss with blown down trees resting on it. We also saw a caves in old cabin and outhouse. We assume these are remnants from some kind of mining operation. We walked out at Priest Pass Road and hitched into town.
We resupplied and ate lunch at the Safeway. Then we went to the Montana Inn, which was a multi-room Airbnb with shared common spaces. It was a cool old building with many additions and a colorful history including suicide, nuns, unwed mothers, former convicts, and the elderly. There were lots of fun Knick knacks and antiques. I took a nice, hot shower; as I was finishing up and opening the shower curtain, the whole metal curtain rod came crashing down on me. I thought I broke my nose on impact! luckily it was just a big bruise and cut. The proprietor had to come back and close down that bathroom. Biggest injury wasn’t even on trail!
A woman named Lauren who works for the CDTC and, who Owen knows from the DTV / CDTC sock design, picked us up and we went out for beers and ice cream. Downtown Helena includes a “walking mall,” where there was a Grateful Dead cover band and a bunch of dancing boomers — very Burlington vibes. Lauren also drove us by the Montana Capitol building, which was lovely.

Amalgam a.k.a. Black Ghost
Tumblr media
Why, When and What: A terrorist group that profiteers from the chaos of war, and it seeks much profit in the collection and exploitation of Whispered. By creating new and advanced technologies and spreading them out in the right locations, they can cause a lot of havoc.  Formed by several multi-national corporations at the end of World War 2, they’ve been using advanced technology for half a century and, despite several setbacks, have shown no sign of truly stopping.  They sell to the highest bidders, including the worst of the worst.
Clout: Criminal 5, Financial 5, Governmental 5 (15) Locations: Large (3), Worldwide (10), Physical Secuirty (Military Level) (4) (7, 17-10 from Financial and Governmental Clout) Gear: Computers (Futuristic) (5), Laboratories (Full Scale) (5), Medical Facilities (Full Scale) (5), Workshops (Full Scale) (5), Training Facilities (Gym and Range) (3), Vehicles (Vehicle Fleet (2), Air Fleet (5), Military/Exotic (5)) Weapons (Full Metal Jacket) (5) (20, 35-15 from Clout) Total Cost: 42
Members of this organization will be covered at a later date. Amalgam Agent Motivation: Fight for Money and Power Critter Type: Human Attributes: Str 4, Dex 4, Con 3, Int 2, Per 3, Will 3 Ability Scores: Muscle 14, Combat 14, Brain 10 Life Points: 44 Drama Points: 0-3 Special Abilities: Hard to Kill 2 Maneuvers Name - Score - Damage - Notes Dodge - 14 - None - Defense Action Kick - 13 - 13 - Bash Punch - 14 - 11 - Bash Assault Rifle - 14 - 19 - Bullet
The average Amalgam agent is an elite mercenary, usually ex-military. With no scruples whatsoever about getting the job done at any cost. After all, they make a LOT of money.

Plan-1211 Alastor Motivation: Orders Critter Type: Robot Attributes: Str 8, Dex 6, Con 7, Int 2, Per 4, Will 7 Ability Scores: Muscle 22, Combat 18, Brain 12 Life Points: 70 Drama Points: 0-3 Special Abilities: Robot, Armor Value 18 (9 at Joints), Built In Weapon (Assault Rifle) Maneuvers Name - Score - Damage - Notes Punch - 18 - 21 - Bash Kick - 17 - 23 - Bash Machine Gun - 18 - 21 - Bullet, Rapid Fire Self-Destruct - 20 - 50/25/10 - Explosive
Alastors are not simply robot minions, they are downsized (7-8ft tall) Arm Slave mecha. They are piloted by AI, so they count more as robots than mecha, but they are far and above the average robot goon. They are used by Amalgam executives as personal bodyguards. Name: Cyborg Soldier Motivation: Fight for Money and Power Critter Type: Human Attributes: Str 8, Dex 6, Con 6, Int 2, Per 4, Will 3 Ability Scores: Muscle 22, Combat 16, Brain 12 Life Points: 72 Drama Points: 1-3 Special Abilities: Hard to Kill 2, Cyborg Maneuvers Name - Score - Damage - Notes Dodge - 16 - None - Defense Action Kick - 15 - 22 - Bash Punch - 16 - 20 - Bash Assault Rifle - 16 - 20 - Bullet
Cybernetic augmentation has been the purview of Amalgam since the 1960s. At first, they made a lot of high-end units with unique abilities (the "Numbers" series), but over time, they've refined the process into "Mass Production". Though the 'volunteers' are usually brainwashed captives, and often sold to organizations like Millennium/Shocker to serve as troopers. Executives at Amalgam either tend to be non-combat-oriented, Arm Slave Pilots, or self-experimental horrors.
