Armored Cavalryman.
Tibetan, and possibly Bhutanese and Nepalese
18th–19th century.
This figure has been assembled based on photographs taken in the 1930s and 1940s in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa during the Great Prayer Festival. The photographs showed troops of ceremonial armored cavalry, who wore a standardized set of equipment as stipulated by the central government of Tibet probably from the mid-seventeenth or eighteenth century onward. The equipment included a helmet, a mail shirt, a set of four mirrors, an armored belt, a bow case and quiver, a matchlock musket, a bandoleer with gunpowder and bullets, and a short spear for the rider, as well as a saddle, saddle rug, and tack for the horse. Armed and equipped in a similar fashion, Tibetan government officials were periodically required to demonstrate proficiency on horseback with musket, bow and arrow, and spear until as late as the mid twentieth century.

Thursday night was Member’s Night so we got to see some new exhibits and some we had not gotten to yet. The main target was Hew Locke's "Gilt" on The Met's facade, the third of commissions on the Museum's exterior. Then the gorgeous pieces in the "Samurai Splendor: Sword Fittings from Edo Japan." We also loved “Water Memories” which showcased the relationship and importance of bodies of water and waterways to indigenous communities. Such a special opportunity. .... #UnderGlassCollection #ShoeDaydreams #CuratedCloset #TheClosedDoorCollection #SophisticatedPrecious #TheCarnelianKitten #newyork #nyc #museum #exhibit #samurai #metmuseum #metmembers #japan #nativeamerican @metmuseum @metmembers @metamericanwing @metarmsandarmor (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjNmHpuOKfJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

📸 Photo from @loricaclothing ⠀ A close-up of the field armor of Maximillian I, circa 1480, currently on view at @metmuseum as part of the "Last Knight" exhibition. ⠀ This armor is a stunning example of the Gothic style, with its fluted decoration and exquisite punch work. One might look at such a work of art and think surely it must be a purely decorative piece, but indeed this armor was intended for the battlefield. It was created when the future Holy Roman Emperor was just a 23-year-old prince, recently crowned Duke of Burgundy, and eager to craft the powerful, noble image that would establish his influence in the years of his reign. ⠀ #armor #armour #metlastknight #metarmsandarmor #armsandarmor #armsandarmour #medievalhistory #medievalarmor #medievalart #15thcentury #historyfacts #historylover #medievalworld #middleages #themet #metropolitanmuseumofart #artmuseum #historymuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Pm3f9HurY/?igshid=15vywdwkxhrt7

#Repost @metmuseum • • • • • • This exceptionally rare war mask is one of only two known examples from Tibet. It is subtly forged in iron to represent a human or divine visage, boldly damascened in gold with flame-like tendrils for eyebrows, around the mouth, and framing the face. See this mask along with two others that have just been added to The Met’s permanent display in Gallery 378 in celebration of #AsiaWeekNY. #TheMet #warmask #metarmsandarmor @metarmsandarmor⁣⁣ ⁣____⁣ Pictured: War Mask. Extremely rare dhal (shield) from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
Runjeet Singh wrote : An extremely rare dhal (shield) from a group of dhal that were produced in the 2nd part of the 19th century in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Near identical examples are signed by the maker ‘Khooshal Dhunjee & Sons, Dhalgarwada street, Ahmedabad’ and a similar example, signed in this fashion is in the collection of the @metarmsandarmor @metmuseum
What sets this example apart from others known is the four cartouche panels which portray animals and hunters in foliage. Two European men in pith helmets are shown in one scene, and in another, two Indian men in turbans.

I lifted this from @metarmsandarmor’s Twitter page because there is very little metalwork that can stop The Goldsmith’s Daughter in her tracks. This is amazing.

Mystery solved. This dog-eared photograph in our Department's archives is the earliest known representation of elements of armor for man and horse that Bashford Dean, the founder and first curator of our Department, had in his private collection and bequeathed to us in 1928. The rider's helmet is a probable work of the celebrated Augsburg armorer Kolman Helmschmid and certainly one of the gems in our collection. Where did Dean acquire this equestrian ensemble? We did not know, but the photograph, which was taken before he owned it, seemed a potential clue. The humble document has now lived up to our expectations, for the same image was found in an auction catalogue, of which we did not have a copy. The equestrian ensemble was a lot in a 1920 German sale of property from the German House of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, and one of a group of items that, by way of a complicated inheritance process, had come to them from the armory of the Princes Radziwill in Nesvizh Castle, Belarus (at the time Lithuania.) This new provenance confirms stylistic evidence that out helmet belongs to other elements known to originate from the same armory and that are now widely scattered. It is now time to track them all down and reconstruct, on paper at least, the luxury armor of which they were parts! “ Peffenhauser was among the most celebrated and long-lived armorers of Augsburg, a city famous for its armor-makers. The pieces pictured here are thought to be part of a garniture commissioned by Elector August of Saxony (1526–1586) in 1582. Because of its slender proportions, the armor is assumed to have been ordered as a present for the elector’s son, Christian (1560–1591), who later succeeded his father as archduke and elector of Saxony. These elements were intended for light cavalry or infantry use. The original garniture also included a complete armor for heavy cavalry with exchange pieces for the tournament, parts of which are still preserved in the Saxon Electoral Armory in Dresden. #metarmsandarmor #armsandarmor #themet #sculpture #metalwork #armor#Peffenhauser #Saxony #Germany #Augsburg Elements from a Garniture Made for Christian I of Saxony (1560–1591).
