REPTILE (2023) Grade: C
Starts off with a good 1st act. Has your attention. Some good moments, missing a better explanation for the hook. The turns weren't pulse pounding. A little long as well. Didn't need to be 2 hours.

Build me your perfect casting for a new movie about our sassy little twink Scarecrow (we really need one) Any characters, any actors.
Tumblr media
Let's start with our sweet boy Jonathan: I don't think I can (and I certainly don't want to) accept anyone other than Mr. Murphy for this role. If he was great in The Dark Knight trilogy, he'd probably be even better now: more age appropriate, less boyish, but just as attractive AND creepy, because for me those are the two main traits any live action adaptation of Scarecrow needs. This time I'd probably make his hair dark auburn at least.
Tumblr media
I also need more movies where he wears glasses
Now, given that this is practically impossible, there are a couple of more realistic options I wouldn't be so mad about:
Bill Skarsgård
Tumblr media
This is a very self-indulgent pick. I find him attractive, he looks good with glasses, and he knows how to be scary. Is he the best actor for the role? I don't know. Is he hot enough for me to overlook that and enjoy a very slutty and sexy Scarecrow again? Yes.
Caleb Landry Jones
Tumblr media
He would be my first choice if I actually answered with my brain. He can look very creepy and messed up (as he did in Antiviral), but he still has that cute boy aura about him. Extra points for being a redhead because I'm a Year One bitch.
Michael Pitt
Tumblr media
What can I say? I like him in villainesque roles and he makes a great psychopath. I wasn't particularly fond of the way he portrayed Mason in Hannibal, but if he went the Funny Games route, we could have a very good Scarecrow.
Young Christopher Walken
Tumblr media
I can almost hear "call the police" here. If I had a time machine he'd be higher up in the list.
For our angsty playboy Bruce:
Robert Pattinson
Tumblr media
I'm not sure if this is a popular or unpopular opinion at this point, but he might be my favorite Bruce. I like the emo take and I genuinely enjoy his acting. I couldn't understand the backlash when he was announced as the next Batman, but I was introduced to his work by Cronenberg's Cosmopolis (I was never a Twilight girl, no hate to those who like the franchise), and I've also seen how capable he is in other indie movies, so I knew he would deliver.
I also adored Christian Bale's Bruce, and I'm a bigger fan of TDK than The Batman, but Battinson has a special place in my heart.
Now let's think about the movie. I never spent too much time pondering on what my ideal Scarecrow movie would look like because we all know people just want yet another Joker movie and the chances of this happening are close to zero, but there are two things I would like to see:
His background story. We all know that, no matter the universe, he always gets tormented beyond what any human could -or should be able to- stand. I feed on trauma and seeing my favorite characters mentally and physically destroyed, so this is a must. If you ask me, I favor the great-granny option because it's crueler and makes for a more interesting character.
The parallelisms between him and Batman. This may be one of the most interesting points raised by Year One. I want them to be portrayed almost as mirror images. Their actions are fueled by childhood trauma, their motivations are driven by fear, but they end up fulfilling radically opposite yet complementary roles... I want this to explore the nature vs. nurture debate on what makes someone's psyche develop in a specific way, and I want it to be dark and twisted. Give me an even darker Bruce.
As for what other characters I'd like to see here, without a plot in mind, I can't really go deeper, but some options would be:
Great granny Keeny: because in my mind she's the main catalyst of his villain downward spiral. I want her to be somewhat attractive and comic book accurate (let's face it, she's FINE), but I have no one in mind. I picture her as an older version of either Bedelia Du Maurier from Hannibal or Ethel Cripps from The Sandman... Maybe an artificially aged Gillian Anderson would do the trick.
Linda Friitawa (Fright): a very underrated and ignored character that I'd like to see a live action adaptation of. Again, I never fully developed a plot in my mind, so I don't know if there would be a possibility to fit her anywhere and I also wouldn't want to take away from the homoerotic undertones of Scarecrow and Batman's love/hate relationship, because that's essential for me and my very self-indulgent, half-baked idea of a Scarecrow movie. Anya Taylor-Joy would be perfect here.
Tumblr media
...and that's it for now. Although I'll probably regret not mentioning Nygma (not Nashton) and a few others as soon as I hit "post"! ♡ Thanks for your ask @ninja-potato-shelby-solomons ♡

THE ACTOR'S ACTOR
Michael Shannon is still trying to figure out a few things. Minor issues, like, what the hell is America about? And why do our vocations not contain the keys to a simple life? Shannon has recently added a directing credit to his extraordinary acting C.V., but in most other respects he’s just one of us.
fashion director GRACE GILFEATHER
by THE RAKE
photography MICHAEL SCHWARTS
Hollywood actor Michael Shannon is photographed for the Issue 83’s cover of The Rake magazine. Michael wears Brioni, Dunhill and Audemars Piguet.
Speaking to The Rake in early July, from his home in New York, Michael Shannon is — emotionally, at least — on both sides of the Atlantic. “I’m a massive tennis fan, and I’ve just been watching [Novak] Djokovic dismantle your fellow Brit [Cameron] Norrie,” he says.“Before that we were watching the Nadal and [Taylor] Fritz match. Oh, Rafael was in pain, but he still won.” All of which might sound like small talk, but Shannon has brought up tennis for reasons related to a vocation that has earned him Academy Award (2016’s Nocturnal Animals, 2008’s Revolutionary Road), Golden Globe (2014’s 99 Homes) and Tony Award (2016’s Broadway revival of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night) nominations.
Acting, he says, involves getting into something resembling a meditative state. “You have to be able to still your mind, for sure,”he says.“You can’t be thinking about a bunch of other stuff. When I’m doing a scene, I have a couple of ground rules. Like, I never bring my phone to set, ever. I’m not judging anyone who does, but for me the thing you’re trying to do is so enormous and multifaceted that for me it has to be the only thing you’re thinking about. So I try to have no distractions at all. A lot of the time [on set] I don’t really say much, and people can misconstrue that as, ‘Oh, he’s, he’s “method”’. But I’m defiantly anti-method. I think the notion of trying to walk around all the time convincing yourself [of something] feels psychotic.
He’s also been busy — exceptionally so — with an eclectic list of yet-to-be-screened projects, all of which suggest that his knack for making the right creative choices as he hits 48 years on the planet remains as sharp as ever. The most prominent include David O. Russell’s 1930s-set mystery-comedy Amsterdam (alongside Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert De Niro) and Bullet Train, an action thriller directed by David Leitch and released this summer, in which Shannon joins Brad Pitt, among others, as assassins on the eponymous high-speed train deciphering the connection between their various missions.
Shannon plays White Death, and viewers expecting his character to pack the most menace won’t be disappointed. “Bullet Train is filled with a lot of really scary assassin-type people, but they’re all scared of White Death,” he says. “I guess he’s the super-assassin. The high priest of death. And he’s the boss of this international cartel that deals in very shady things. He’s the one that’s supposed to make everybody shake in their boots, I guess.”

Protests broke out at the University of Pittsburgh after Daily Wire host Michael Knowles and journalist Brad Polumbo visited the school to debate transgender ideology, a hot topic on college campuses across the country.
The anger directed against the topic of discussion, "Should transgenderism be regulated by law?", turned into fear as a "loud explosion was heard and felt in the debate room," according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
"The explosion prompted Pitt to send an emergency alert to students about a ‘public safety emergency,’" the newspaper added.
UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH’S LGBTQ TASK FORCE MAKES DEMANDS, INCLUDING TRANS-INCLUSIVE HEALTH CARE, HOUSING
Even after the debate over transgenderism concluded, the protests reportedly continued outside. Some "chanted, yelled, played drums and cowbells and held LGBTQ flags as police urged them to clear off the streets."
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also reported that "[o]ne protester set fire to a cardboard cutout with Mr. Knowles’ face on it."
Knowles retweeted a video of students protesting on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus on his official Twitter account and also shared articles and posts about the event, held Tuesday night.
Polumbo took to Twitter to address the agitators on campus directly. "[T]o the protestors who tried to interrupt and shout down the event, set off fireworks in the street, and reportedly assaulted 4 cops… grow the hell up."
The protests and possible explosion at the University of Pittsburgh were the latest in a series of controversies at the school that have received national attention.
The University of Pittsburgh’s LGTBQ task force posted several demands for the university to implement, including expanding housing and health care to transgender students.
"These centers need to not be buried deep in an org chart. LGBTQIA+ staff hired NEED to have some level of autonomy over collaboration, programming, and resource sharing. No more of this BS departmental/division gate keeping," the task force wrote in a post on Instagram.
Athlete Riley Gaines also made headlines after she visited the University of Pittsburgh’s campus back in March. A 12-time All-American swimmer, Gaines called out the chaos at University of Pittsburgh as many activists tried to prevent her appearance at the college.
Gaines — who became a national figure when she objected to trans swimmer Lia Thomas participating in women’s sports — pointed out the double standard that conservative speakers face on leftist college campuses.
"When Dylan Mulvaney comes to UPitt, he gets paid $26,000 from school funding. When Riley Gaines comes to UPitt, she gets protested, threatened with violence, and attempted to get the event canceled by students, faculty, and lawmakers," Gaines tweeted. "Something tells me Im doing something right," the swimmer told her over 500,000 followers on the platform.
The University of Pittsburgh directed Fox News Digital to the following statement on its website about the incident: "On the evening of April 18, 2023, an Emergency Notification Service message was sent alerting the campus community to an incident happening outside of O’Hara Student Center. There were several groups gathering, including guests arriving for a speaker event and counter demonstrators in the vicinity. In addition to several devices which produced significant smoke, an incendiary device was thrown in the direction of officers, triggering the message. As the situation evolved, several buildings were temporarily closed and visitors to residence halls restricted as a safety precaution. Throughout this, these details and additional information were regularly posted on emergency.pitt.edu throughout the evening, until such time as an all clear could be issued."

Babylon: The Over The Top Movie by Damien Chazelle
Tumblr media
“Babylon” is Damien Chazelle’s salute to the movies, following on the heels of Sam Mendes’  similar homage to the film in “Empire of Light.” I’ve never met Sam Mendes, although I admire his work. But I met Damian Chazelle, when he came to Chicago for the premiere of “La La Land” at the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival on October 13, 2016. Damien Chazelle is a genuine, personable, interesting young man. Once again he has partnered with longtime collaborator Justin Hurwitz (who also did the music for “La La Land” and “Whiplash”). The "Babylon" score was very reminiscent of the music from “La La Land.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5muQK7CuFtY Babylon attempts to depict what Hollywood might have been like back when the silent movie era was giving way to talkies. It is both an homage to those chaotic times, beginning in 1926, and a criticism of the excesses of Hollywood. In fact, the opening 20 minutes, depicts an elephant being transported to an orgy hosted by someone seemingly based on Fatty Arbuckle. The golden shower scene, gross as it is, goes a long way toward illustrating those Hollywood excesses. It’s way over the top. You could say that about the entire film. One of the things that amazes me about this $80 million-dollar stroll down memory lane, is the cast. In addition to Brad Pitt as the male lead and Margot Robbie as the female lead, it seems like there are bit parts for a myriad of actors, both known and unknown. Who were these masked men (and women)? Flea has a part. Eric Roberts---who I interviewed on my WeeklyWilson podcast during the pandemic—plays Margot Robbie’s father. Lukas Haas who played the small boy in “Witness” when he was 9 in the seventies, plays George, Brad Pitt’s best friend.  Tobey Maguire, listed as an executive producer, has a truly hero-destroying role as a gangster. Spike Jonze plays Otto. Michael Dukakis has an uncredited part as a soldier. Anna Chazelle has an uncredited part as Bobbie Hart. Kaia Gerber, the look-alike daughter of Cindy Crawford, has a bit part at some point.  Jovan Adepo plays jazz trumpeter Sidney Palmer. Jean Smart (“Hacks”) plays a composite character based on columnists Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons, Elinor O’Toole. Max Minghella (“The Handmaid’s Tale's Nick Blaine) plays Irving Thalberg. Comedian/actor Jeff Garlin (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) plays Don Wallach, and Ethan Suplee  (“Remember the Titans” 2000) plays Wilson and spends most of his time onscreen spitting grossly. Manny Liotta plays a P.A. (Production Assistant). This is a very partial list of the surprisingly elaborate cast list. (Hard to stage an orgy without a crowd, I guess.) But the main character whose work in the lead is impressive as Manny Torres is relatively unknown Mexican actor Diego Calva, who comes to the screen in a major part as a complete unknown to U.S. audiences. Calva played a drug lord on Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico” but, if you missed that, you missed him. He came to his star-making part in much the same way as the fictional Manny Torres: by doing whatever anyone in the movie business needed to be done. Diego Calva reminded me of the “fixer” characters played by Harvey Keitel in “Pulp Fiction” or by Leiv Schreiber in “Ray Donovan.” He has been nominated for a Golden Globe (if that award still means anything.) On an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night television show, Calva shared some behind-the-scenes insights into Babylon and into his own background. Diego learned to speak English specifically for “Babylon.” Calva learned English from playing “Pokemon” video games in Mexico. He confirmed that the chicken in the orgy scene was a great actor.  He also confirmed that they used a chicken puppet for some takes. Diego admitted he was most excited to meet Tobey Maguire since he had been a “Spiderman” fan from a young age. Among other comments the young actor made was this one about the opening orgy scene:  “It was so crazy. I’ve never been surrounded by so many naked people before.” Of his co-star and love interest in the film, Margot Robbie, Diego said:  “She’s always going to do the unexpected. She’s a fearless actress, just full-on energy.  When you’re so tired, she can play it 100 times more." Diego studied at the Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica in Mexico. He is a talent to watch. The thing that resonated with me---especially since it was quite similar to Sam Mendes’ musings on the movies---were the lines that pin down Chazelle’s feelings about the film. It’s not unique among creative types, whether filmmakers, writers, songwriters, or painters that the work we leave behind gives us a little bit of immortality. Ideally, whatever we have been responsible for as creative artists has been good and it remains long after we are gone. Chazelle scripted one scene, in particular, between Jean Smart and Brad Pitt where she tells the fading screen star “Your time has run out. There is no why. Babylon is bigger than you. No one asks to be left behind.” Telling him how he will live forever on celluloid, the columnist says, “You’ve been given a gift. Be grateful.” Pitt’s character, in an earlier scene, states, “What I do means something to millions of people. For real people, on the ground, it means something.” He then tells Olivia Wilde’s character (Ina) to spare him the pretentious notes on his reading of a script, expressing disgust for those who try to characterize Babylon as “a low art” and, instead, enshrine Ibsen and Strindberg and the theater. The general critical consensus has been bad for the film among both critics and audiences. I understand that, as so many of the scenes are well over-the-top and, I’m sure, offensive to some. The opening scene with the elephant and the elephant dung is but one example. There is a later one involving Margot Robbie at a party rejecting the instructions to be “elegant". She tries but fails, to “act” respectable since her original nickname was “the wild child.” Now, she is to eschew her Jersey roots and act much more well-behaved. She rejects that advice. She literally smears food all over her face, insults everyone at the party, and, ultimately, projectile vomits both outside the house and inside on a newly-purchased expensive rug. It’s a bit much. Between the descent into the depths of Los Angeles that Tobey Maguire insists Manny and his companion must take, the elephant scene, the vomiting, and the golden shower scene at the orgy, the film was just too far over the top. Babylon cost $80 million.  When you see the voluminous cast list, it isn’t surprising. Not only does it have two of the biggest current stars in Hollywood (Pitt and Robbie) but it seems to have everyone else who might have been hanging around. My favorite was the inclusion of Eric Roberts, who is undoubtedly going to hold the record for most American movie appearances ever. Eric has a scene with a snake, which is pretty funny. However, a lot of the scenes were not funny and, instead, screamed gross. You get the feeling that the creative license to try new things led to throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the movie. Another factor that swelled the film’s length from a normal hour and a half to over three hours was the emphasis on the music.  Chazelle has highlighted the music of collaborator Justin Hurwitz. Although the trumpet player character Sidney Palmer (Jovan Adepo) admitted that he did not really play the trumpet, the film focuses on the band and its performances too long. The movie would have benefited from some judicious editing and shorter musical interludes. The performances, especially those of Pitt, Robbie, and Diego Calva, are good. The plot, supposedly based on the 1959 Kenneth Anger book "Hollywood Babylon," was outrageous, but many of the stories in that novel have been debunked. The cinematography by Linus Sandgren is great and the set decoration by Anthony Carlino deserves mention. Opening on Christmas Day against "Avatar" might have been a questionable move. Chazelle even pays tribute to many iconic films in a final montage of clips from various movies, including "Avatar," and those flickering images even caused a warning to be posted outside our theater. Babylon is too long. Some of the musical pieces could have been shortened.  Removing some of the scenes that depict how difficult it was for silent movie actors to learn the new way of making talkies (by doing a takeover and over and over) could have been omitted. Grossing out the audience over and over succeeded, to the film's detriment.  The sets and costumes and cinematography are great. "Babylon" was a great creative effort. It just didn't work. Ted C is from the golden age of gossip. Today we don't have that anymore. He was very smart, he used to nickname celebrities, but he left clues so we knew who was who. Lainey also got to write about blinds, she Chace dimples, she said he's bi when she wrote about him having an affair with Michael Pitt, but it would have ended badly. The funniest thing was the cucumber case about Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger.
There's also this actress married to a famous actor, famous couple, beloved, she was one of Ted C's targets, how much she slept with married men at the time, producers and directors, then her husband doesn't understand why it's hard for her to get roles in Hollywood.
Good times.
