I kind of love that Cornelia Funke is including Polish language in her Reckless book. Kami’en’s son being called Kochany is so sweet.

It amazes me all the time how some of the greatest book series I know and adore, are in the greater picture hust hidden gems fallikg through the cracks of most people
The Reckless, or Mirrorworld novels of Cornelia Funke are one of these. No series had a bigger impact on what I think words can achieve and yet so few know of them
It might be that Funke is a rather obscure author outside of germany, despite writing her books both in english and german herself, or that in the vast sea of fantasy YA fiction, this almost grimdark fairytale fantasy novel doesn't seems like it would be something special
But believe me if you ever picked up any book by Funke, it is special

Nerron expresses desire to possess a female partner twice -let’s skip over the sexism of his worldview for now- but both of these declarations ring hollow. That Nerron wants the power and status that is conveyed by possessing a beautiful woman, not the women themselves.
When Nerron is being led astray by the winds, part of his fantasy is having a wife more beautiful than the dark fairy, but the core of this fantasy is the idea of surpassing Kami’en as a king, and surpassing Kami’en’s wife reads as just another facet. Since a part of Kami’en’s visible power is the love of a beautiful immortal, to surpass him requires a beautiful spouse of Nerron’s own.
When Nerron captures Jacob in the vines and steals his mummified corpse pieces, he says he’s going to steal Fox as well, an expression of Nerron’s total victory over Jacob in this moment. Nerron wins, in his mind, by taking Jacob’s treasure, his reputation, and his love interest.
It’s worth noting that Nerron meets both Fox and the dark fairy, and in these scenes is not verbally attracted to them, or even particularly interested in them as anything other than enemies and rivals.

How am I just now finding out about the colour of revenge??? I haven't particularly kept up with Cornelia Funke, but I do search her every 6 months or so. But HOLY SHIT ANOTHER INKWORLD BOOK IM FREAKING OUT.
I also found those GORGEOUS STUNNING BEAUTIFUL 20th anniversary editions and I must admit I am trying very hard to not spend an obscene amount of money on a copy.

A scene I'm trying to manifest for Reckless 5
"Hey, love. What are you doing?"
"I-" Will stares at the wall in front of him. He could have sworn that just a second ago, the apartment doo-
"Uh", he starts again. "I... I forgot. Sorry, doesn't matter." He turns around to his mom smiling at him.
"It's late, how about you get ready for bed? I'll be right with you for your bedtime story." She reaches down to ruffle his hair -down? But her smile is so relaxed and happy that it wipes away any vague unease he might have felt.
-|-
He is roused from his sleep by the sound of voices. It takes him a while to examine why that surprises him. Then it occurs to him that he doesn't remember seeing anybody else in the apartment. Not that there's something wrong with that. It's how things are, nothing else could be expected. The only person visiting sometimes was his... The word is gone before it's even really there.
His curiosity makes him get up and walk towards the voices in the living room.
"He is happy here. He is at peace. He is safe. He won't want to leave." His mom sounds so different from how she usually does. There's sadness in her voice, and something cold that Will doesn't like at all.
"Then he can tell me that himself. He told me a lot about you and I know you love your son. But I love him, too."
"If he tells you he wants to stay here, will you leave?"
"... yes. I. I promise I will go back where I came from." Will inches around a corner. Moms must have an extra sense because her eyes immediately find him. She clears her throat and puts up a smile Will doesn't buy for a second.
"Sorry that we woke you up, honey. Do you want me to make you a sleepy time tea?" But for once, Will doesn't pay attention to her, instead gaping at whatever she had been talking to - The fact that it might be a whoever doesn't occur to him until a few moments later. He feels like he has never seen anything like it: it looks like a statue from a museum came to life. But darker and scarier. Will decides he rather wants to look at the eyes, they look nicer. The person moves as smoothly and silently as a cat and maybe Will should have been scared, but it is also so careful, like it doesn't want to spook Will.
"Hello, Will." The rough voice couldn't have been more different from his mom's soft one. Shyly, Will nods a greeting. It occurs to him that he might want to shut his mouth, but he is still staring at the person, who is slowly starting to kneel so it and Will are on eye level. Will stares into its eyes and thinks of golden sunlight glinting on the water. The eyes are watching him intently. Concerned, his mind supplies.
"How are you?", the person asks.
"It's alright, love. You can answer." I was going to, Mom.
"We did some reading today. And I painted and Mom let me play some piano. Tomorrow I want to go out and-" Will's voice falters, an image of high trees and birds evaporating from his mind. Nevermind, wasn't important anyway. But their guest looks at Will with the same alarmed expression Will's mom had had on her face when Will had cut his hand while helping her cook. The person looked at him like Will was hurt. It raises a hand and touches his shoulder, saying something that doesn't sound like English or German. Still, Will is so sure he should have understood it and some part of him is scared by the fact that he didn't.
"I'm sorry, I don't know what you just sai-"
"Don't touch him!" Will has never seen his mom so angry and he instinctively moves to cower behind the person in front of him, who had turned to face Will's mom. Will didn't know what this new version of his mom would do, but the scary stone person with the long claws and the teeth would not let anything happen to Will.
"You won't just take him from here like that! Will, do you even know what his name is?" Will doesn't want her to shout like that and he's so ashamed to admit that he really doesn't know. He feels like he should.
"I'm sorry", he whispers.
"Don't feel bad. It's not your fault." But looking at its eyes, Will couldn't help but feel bad.
"I think this settles it, then." Mom's smile was relieved, but not very nice. "Now, it's time you upheld your end of the deal." The person is taller than Will and an adult, but Will still feels the urge to reach out and comfort it when it blinks wetness from its eyes and nods shakily. Slowly, it starts walking towards the door to their flat. Will finds that he doesn't want to see it leave and looks down. By his feet, he spots a necklace that hasn't been there before the person had knelt down to speak to him. Will bends down to pick it up, drawn in by the pale green stone.
"What do you have there?!" Will is absolutely certain this version of his mom won't want him to have anything that came into the flat from *outside* so he quickly closes his fingers around the pendant, not wanting to give up this treasure.
"You're scaring me, Mom!" Immediately, her face crumbles into a sad expression.
"I'm so sorry, honey, I didn't mean to. I just didn't expect any visitors. I don't know this man and I was scared he would hurt you. You are safe here."
"Is that why I can't go outside?"
"Of course you can, love. But not tonight, how about you ask me again tomorrow?"
"But by tomorrow, I will have forgotten that I wanted to. Maybe you will even have, too." Thinking about this is uncomfortable and hard, but now Will has finally started, he won't stop. "Our home is safe, so I can't go anywhere else that isn't. But I want to."
"Sweetheart, why would you?"
"Because there's a whole world out there, Mom. More than one, even. There's parks and people and oceans, fairies, unicorns and goyl! There's danger and wonder and there will never be a day when I won't try to get back to it all!" His mom smiles at his words, full of love.
"It's late, how about you get ready for bed? I'll be right with you for your bedtime story." Will feels like he's sinking deeper and deeper into a nightmare, but it also feels like waking up.
"That's the exact same thing you said to me last night", he whispered. And every night before that. "Is this... are you real? Is our home real? Did you come from downstairs before you came in here?" The last horrified question, he directs at the unbidden visitor. Who shakes its head. Will looks at his mom again. Remembers the smell of a hospital. Beeping sounds. The thump of earth hitting a wooden box. People shaking his hand.
"My mom died."
"Will, please, your father will explain everything."
"I don't want him to. I..." It's getting easier to think. He opens his fingers and looks at the pendant in his hand. His palm surrounding it is shot through with veins of the same green, almost as if the colour of the stone has rubbed off.
"I want to leave, Nerron."

A very happy birthday to my book husband! How old is he? No one knows for sure, and he sure as heck isn’t going to tell us! Will that stop me from celebrating? Nope! I didn't have it in me for a lot of words, but here are some headcanons!
Hentzau groans the moment darkness begins to take over on the 8th of February. When the sun comes up, he knows that someone is going to break his sacred rule. They’re going to mention what day it is.
No one is supposed to say a word about his birthday!
He doesn’t need or want this reminder that he is getting older.
He doesn’t need a date to remind him anyway, the pain in his back is a pretty good alert all on its own.
He will accept a gift in private.
As long as there is no singing involved.
Kami’en forces him to accept his gifts by saying things like – “we’re not celebrating the fact that you’re getting older, Hentzau. We’re merely celebrating the fact that you exist. To me, that is very much something worth celebrating.”
If his significant other wants to celebrate with him, it’s best to do so privately in the comfort of their home. No extravagant parties or fancy dinners out in town.
He’d much prefer the quiet time alone with his lover.
He will not turn down a home cooked meal though!
Especially if you’ve gotten his favorite recipe from his sister. Kudos for following his mother’s recipe to perfection. Best gift ever.
After dinner, take him upstairs for…dessert. Let him show you just how good all his life experience is ;)

okay last inkheart post for today but finding out (in original unwritten canon) the reason dustfinger was gone all the time was supposed to be bc he was accidentally and unknowingly going to the mirrorworld is so fucking funny. imagine thinking you're going on a two-day trip and coming back and everyone's pissed at you because it's apparently been a month since you left. he's spent so much of his life being gaslit by the universe that he just thinks something is wrong with him. peak humor.

What a power move for Nerron the Bastard to say he doesn’t believe in true love when, like, true love is a tangible-ass thing in his home-reality. You can use it to undo curses, you can make goddamn yarn out of it. It’s like a guy saying he doesn't believe in high blood pressure
