regarding this post, and the Dune sequels by Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson
Tumblr media
So I haven’t picked up any of these Dune followups in about twenty years, and for all I know, the books released in the intervening time are much better. And I’m operating off memory here.
But the main reason I’m content not going back is that… they’re not all that good. At best they’re about equal to some of the fanfiction I’ve read lately. At worst, there’s some deeply goofy worldbuilding and plot decisions. I should back up and give a little context.
The books I’m talking about here are written by a team of Brian Herbert (Frank’s son) and Kevin J. Anderson, who has written a lot of spinoff novels. I went to go check out his other work — he did a few Star Wars novels and three X Files novels, among others, and here is a very telling quote from his website, describing one of his original novels:
Unpretentious, unapologetic storytelling that transports busy readers to other worlds for a quick escape and fast-paced entertainment
Which… is both a perfect description of his writing and the absolute opposite of the Dune novels that Frank Herbert wrote. I’ll get back to this in a moment, because there’s another important detail: the Herbert+Anderson team, according to them, work from outlines and notes left by Frank Herbert before he died. So far they’ve gotten seventeen books out of these outlines and notes — Frank wrote six Dune novels.
OK. So. I do not envy the H+A team the effort required to imitate Frank Herbert and live up to his legacy — Dune and its sequels are dense books that interweave science fiction storytelling with politics and philosophy, all in a prose style that’s hard to mimic. I think they’re legitimately trying their best, and working on a compressed timeline compared to Frank. (The original six books were published over the course of twenty years — H+A have put out seventeen books in the 25 years since 1999, and they are not short.)
The problem is that, unless they’ve really switched things up, the H+A team put way heavier emphasis on the storytelling, and almost none on the politics and philosophy. So their Dune novels are much quicker reads than the originals! In my paperback edition, Dune takes about 150 pages of small type until the “action” begins — Herbert really takes his time setting up his characters and setting, and begins to explore his main theme of the risks of political power. And then the main characters find themselves in nonstop life-threatening peril.
I… do not recall the H+A Dune novels having themes in the same way. A lot happens, but like. Dune is constantly saying things to the reader about how, say, carefully-orchestrated plans can easily go awry in tragic fashion, and also there are dozens of memorable setpieces. The H+A Dune novels have memorable moments, but they all feel rather shallow. The deepest thing they’re asking you to consider is gonna be, like, “wouldn’t it be fucked up if weird robots ruled over people?” And yeah, that would be fucked up, but it doesn’t have the staying power of some of the weird ideas in Dune.
Anyway I don’t bear either Brian Herbert or Kevin J. Anderson any personal ill-will. Their Dune books just don’t do it for me the same way as the Frank Herbert originals.
Also Anderson’s writing process is interesting — I can’t seem to make this a proper link no matter what I do (????) but he discusses it on his blog at kjablog.com/dictating-writing-hiking . And that method explains a lot, to me — I don’t know about him, but I would not be able to imitate Frank Herbert’s prose style by dictation while hiking, even if I had the ability to revise later. Makes sense that the text of the H+A Dune novels sounds like Kevin J. Anderson more than it sounds like Frank Herbert.
Oh and fun fact I learned writing this: Kevin J. Anderson lives in my state. Wild.

Hello! I have little idea who Hürrem is, but for the fandom ask, what is the most unique thing about the psychologically?
Thank you so much for this question! And I'm sorry it's taken me so long to write this. I had a whole essay I was working on as an answer but it went off topic so I'm going to try and keep focused here. Are you ready? Because I have a STORY to tell. This is going to be A LOT.
I think the most unique thing about her psychology is her relationship to memory. Or at least that's what it comes down to. Because memory is what really drives her in so many ways. In her more positive and more negative traits. It can be linked to her empathy for others and solidarity with other women, the love (both romantic and familial) which she is fighting for), to the way she perceives reality differently (and in a lot of cases more accurately than most other characters), and to her more vindictive and vengeful side (am I maybe tipping the scales here by writing more paragraphs about her positive traits and leaving the negative to the end? Yes. But these are also the things that I just think are the most linked to her memory, so it is what it is)
First of all, one of the most notable things about Hürrem's relationship with memory is how it affects her sense of solidarity with other women, notably servants and concubines. As she becomes more mature over the course of the show and becomes more distant from the trauma of the deaths of her family and her enslavement, she starts to find solidarity with the suffering of other women. She uses her own story as a source of comfort to Hatice and brings her out of a depressive trance. She takes several concubines under her wing because she knows what it was like being in their shoes. Arguably she tries to become the source of protection for them that she never had early on (so long as the concubines don't cross her or become the Sultan's new favourite but I'll get to that when I get to it). This is also linked to the fact that while she did have ulterior motives for her own benefit, one of the major reasons why she feels as strongly as she does about her charity work is because she remembers what it was like to be kidnapped and enslaved, and she wants to make things at least better for poor and enslaved women. This same sense of empathy and solidarity shows why she is able more than any of the other powerful characters to relate on a human level to servants, and why she is the one with the strongest friendships with servants. Her friendship with Sümbül is probably the best example of this. Which can be seen in that after she frees him, they remain friends. Even getting to catch up in his coffee shop just as friends outside of the stresses and the schemes of Topkapi Palace. The fact that they remain friends after he leaves the harem is a testament to the strength of that friendship between them. The fact that extends beyond even the harem. None of this would have happened had she forgotten her origins. She is vindictive and cruel, but she can also be one of the most empathetic characters who has power in the whole show.
There's also the importance of the connection between her past and present families and the love that she is fighting both to honour and protect. Not only is this link made in her theme song Luli. It's a Ukrainian lullaby with themes of family, and so links her very strongly to her past. But it's also about a mother bird protecting her children. Which is the role that as a mother in the harem Hürrem has to play. Especially with the toxicity and schemes in that environment and the existence of the fratricide law. It is up to her to save her children from the possibility that if their brother takes power they will die. So even though these are two different families in very different situations, protecting the one and honouring the other are connected for her. Her dream on her first night in the harem also highlights this. Her parents tell her to 'get strong' and get 'revenge' for them. And while she doesn't get revenge on their behalf in and of itself, it's a very telling moment that frames her desire to create a new family and regain at least some autonomy over her life as not only a form of moving on but also of honouring her past and her birth family. She has to move on in a lot of ways, but her birth family are still in her thoughts in a lot of ways. She remembers them during one of her lowest points in episode 72, is very happy to speak to the Polish Princess Anna Jagiellon and to offer support to her homeland (Rohatyn her hometown was in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during her lifetime), her charity work is at least partially motivated by remembering her past, she sings a Ukrainian lullaby to Mihrimah, and so on and so forth. So her past is something that she is always conscious of as she fights to build and protect her new family after losing the one of her birth. Her relationship to Leo is very telling here as well. She dreams of seeing him again and him rescuing her. Then when he does show up, she has flashbacks to the raid where she was kidnapped and her family murdered. She keeps telling him to leave. And while her motives for this and why she wants him to leave could be read as ambiguous, when Leo does die (becaue Ibrahim springs a Saw Trap on them via poisoned Turkish delights and threatening Hürrem's kids) Hürrem tries to to sacrifice herself and is about to eat the poisoned Turkish delights even though she is pregnant. And he chooses to die in her place. And that fact alone is incredibly telling. She may not have been in love with him anymore, but she wanted him to be safe. And while he was in the 'evil place' that she describes Topkapi as being, his presence put both of them and her children's lives in danger. Yes she plays up the fact that she has moved on and tells him she is 'very' happy there, but she isn't and she's trying to get him to move on, leave and save himself from the situation that she is trapped in.
(Pargalı Ibrahim Paşa Is The Worst And Can Go To The Crows Exhibits A and B)
While it is tempting to seen her attitude at first as abandoning her past, that would be a massive oversimplification. Because yes she has to move on in a lot of ways, but not only does she never fully leave her past behind but she also honours it by keeping going and through her relationship with her new family.
Her memory is also key to the fact that there are important facts that she either is more aware of or knows where other characters don't. And she has a very long memory. For example, she doesn't just hold a grudge against Barbarossa because he's Mustafa's most prominent ally and therefore is working towards a goal that will put her children's lives in danger. But also because he is the admiral of the navy. Part of his job is committing raids and kidnapping women or picking them up after a raid to be sent to the harem. As one of those girls who was kidnapped on a raid (not by him but by the Tatars) and had to watch her entire family murdered, he and his line of work represent her original trauma. And the loss that she has been fighting to never go through again ever since. She is conscious of the suffering of other concubines (because she herself went through it) and knows that it is him and people like him who inflict that suffering. And that is one element of the system that she is aware of more than most of the other characters.
Tumblr media
Not only that, but she is the only main character in the show who really sees Ibrahim for the monster he truly is. Is this biased? Yes. But he is a narcissist. To be fair, given what he does to her and Leo she has an easier time of figuring it out than anyone else. Given just how blatant what he did was. However, one of Ibrahim's main MOs is psychological manipulation. So we see him turn people who were her friends against her (notably Hatice) and he attempts to gaslight Hürrem but she's having none of it. And I'm sorry but I have to include my own edit here in order to show just how blatant all of this is. The fact that she doesn't buy his narrative does set her apart from the other characters. Because even though she has to move on from it in some ways, the past is always something that she is aware of and that motivates her. There is something to say about the idea of her as being in the role of the scapegoat. She's the person who is the most aware of some of the most toxic elements of the system (yelling 'WE AREN'T ANIMALS' in episode 1 for example) and is willing to fight back from the very beginning. And as a result she gets punished more harshly than her rivals do because she is seen as a threat. As she fairly accurately calls out in her (iconic to me) monologue to Afife Hatun in episode 72 'Everyone spoke about me. The cruel one, the witch, the tyrant. But no one said a thing about what they did to me.' In this way her perception of reality, which is very closely tied to how she sees the past and therefore to her memory, enables her to spot and call out the blatant double standard in how she's seen and treated in order to make her case. So you could definitely make the case that in this way her memory grounds her in reality in a unique way in comparison to her opponents.
The other side of this however is her vindictiveness. And while sometimes she channeled that towards things that I can't criticise her for, sometimes I really can. On the one hand you can see the link between her memory and her vindictiveness in her feuds with Mahidevran, Ibrahim and Fatma Hatun. After all she is the one who is the most aware of how she has been harmed by them and how that has been covered up. So she tries to find justice in her own way. Mahidevran tried to kill her, so Hürrem advocates for herself. Ibrahim threatened her kids and killed Leo, so she exposes his affair and eventually leaks transcripts of him bragging about controlling Süleyman which eventually gets him killed (Alexa play the Cell Block Tango). And Fatma attacked Hürrem, framed her for harming a concubine, and tried to kill her by burning her face so Hürrem burned her face. So she takes matters into her own hands in order to defend herself. The problem is where the people she's going after..haven't hurt her in nearly as significant a way. She burns her best friend Gülnihal's face after she goes to halvet (sleeps with Süleyman). And yes Hürrem apologises for this and tries to make amends by being a better friend, but it still shows how deep her vindictiveness can go. Especially when she's younger, more immature and more selfish. And especially considering that Gülnihal doesn't exactly have a choice. She also has several concubines killed for the same 'offence'. It is worth pointing out two things: that Süleyman sleeping with other women DOES pose a threat to her children's futures (in as much as he would support her and them less) and that she is less quick to murder than her rivals (Hatice kills Nazlı over being a messenger after all...and then blames Hürrem for what she did). Even so, to quote Brooklyn Nine Nine 'Cool motive. Still murder.' Having a long memory and holding a grudge are all well and good when it's against someone like Ibrahim, but is far more destructive when it's against random concubines like Nadia or Nazenin who get caught in the crossfire and she kills for it. This is one of her major flaws that comes out for understandable reasons, but is still definitely a serious flaw. She is after all morally grey and one of the main antagonists of the show. She's just the subversion of a villain trope.
She's just a complex character and I think memory is tied into a lot about what makes her such an interesting character.

Omgosh I just read your previous ask/post! Are you recovered from Covid? *hugs*
Oh, so sweet ♥️ ... many thanks for asking, and your kindness!
I think I'm nearly recovered, but I still struggle with fatigue and sometimes shortness of breath during my daily routine. I was positive with Covid over two (!) weeks in November ... can you believe that? It felt like losing my mind! 😵‍💫
Besides, the long caring for my Mum at home, the worsening of her health condition in July/August, and finally, the painful process of realization that I'm no longer able to continue that way without going to pieces has already made me feel drained ... long before Covid put the icing on the cake.
Anyway, I'm feeling much better now and my mum, too. 😊 So, I look forward to celebrating Christmas with Mum in her beautiful new home where she's tenderly cared for! 🎄🥰
Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas! 🌟

What was your fave moment of 2023? <3 Also, Happy New Year's Eve!
Hmm that's a good question.. probably getting to do my first art market this yr, that was exhausting but really cool! Either that or going to the aquarium finally. It was also exhausting but definitely worth it!
Gotta admit earning my first degree was not as exciting as expected since I still have another yr technically to do but I'm proud that I did it since most of my family went to college but dropped out.
Thanks for the ask! 🥂🎆
What was your favorite moment??
(feel free to message me anytime btw I always enjoy talking! )

candles and fangs for the Halloween ask, please! :D
Hellooo thanks for the ask sarah <3
Candles: What's your favorite scent?
I realllly like petrichor and like, musty earthy smells! I get a lot of the second one from my invertebrate habitats and it's great <3
Fangs: Would you become immortal I'd you could?
If I knew there was a way I could un-immortal myself someday? Yes absolutely. So many things to do and SO LITTLE TIME. It's all I can do to not push myself past more than completing 2 BAs at once 😭😭 there's an option for doing just the one degree with a double major and have them both written down on the same degree, but I am..... Very attached to having multiple degrees. So!
Immortality would let me have my cake and eat it too, lol
