RESBANG 2020 ANNOUNCEMENT - NAKED AND AFRAID [WIP]

Announcing Naked and Afraid, an upcoming dnd!Soul Eater AU epic! 

Following the announcement of partnerships for resbang 2020, and upon receiving the a-ok from the mods, I’m ecstatic to post a draft summary on what I and @snarfables (18+) have been losing our minds over the last couple of months. We’re joined by artists @blinkfl0yd and @pomodoriart, who will create amazing art for the story, and betas @accursednb and @just-absolutely-super who will make sure the story is readable to begin with.

Summary:

A ritual goes technically right but horribly wrong and upsets a lot of carefully thought-out plans. Its consequences result in:

the stranded son of a Great Old One searching for a way home, joined by a pair of tiefling thieves

an academic in a committed relationship to another Great Old One setting out to right misconceptions

a soon-to-be ex-cop and ex-military stumbling upon a horrific revelation about the new and exciting field of soul study, with the help of a now-wanted cleric and an Orc going through an early mid-life crisis

a trainee assassin/monk setting out to avenge a family death with the help of an heir of a long line of ‘bodyguards’

a young half-dragon adventurer temporarily putting her quest to find her mother on hold and joins the above madness, dragging her father and friend along for the ride

two very accomplished and very immoral academics being completely baffled at the situation and sending out their minions to investigate

a very peculiar ‘infernal’ deity and his lone agent watching the havoc above with equal parts dread and confusion

All the groups above converge as they set out from the Athens-inspired ancient metropolis of Melissia, to the hilly mediterenean coastline, to a small orc village nestled between a mountain and the sea, to the great and dangerous outback, and finally, the Australian-inspired modern capital of Stinpoli.

Christmas in August

Every year should have a mammoth knitting undertaking that makes me wonder if I’ve bitten off more than was sensible.

This year it’s been knitting a fairisle cardi in flat pieces, in a non-wool yarn, and then learning to set in sleeves to get the thing assembled. All while the recipient was 180 miles away and thus quite unavailable for fittings.

But it didn’t turn out ‘alf bad, if I say so myself.

This is my lovely mum graciously wearing a Christmas cardigan in August so that I could photograph my handiwork. The pattern is Marie Wallin’s Ninian.

Last Christmas (urgh... last Christmas...) mum mentioned that she might like a Christmas cardi, so what could I do but try to oblige in time for the next festive season?

I picked Ninian because mum likes a V-neck and dislikes anything too thick and bulky, meaning 4ply was the way to go, yarn-wise. I wanted a pattern that wasn’t overtly Christmassy (no reindeer, no trees, no santas...), so that it could be wearable beyond December. Oh, and the much missed Liz had Wallins’ Shetland book and was willing to lend it, which kinda helped a bit, too.

I completely reimagined the colour scheme for the cardi to turn it from ‘subtle modern twist on traditional Shetland design’ to ‘Christmassy without being completely gaudy’. It took several goes to get the new colour scheme right, and some of the yarn colourways I bought weren’t used in the final iteration at all (charcoal and bright leaf green both bit the dust because they just wouldn’t play nicely with the others).

The overall effect was inspired by a Vogue Knitting pattern for a Christmas cardi, from which I particularly stole the addition of dark teal into the more expected Christmas palette of red and green.

The yarn is Hjertegarn Blend Tendens, which is a 50/50 cotton/acrylic 4ply blend. Mum doesn’t wear wool, so I had to branch out into non-animal fibres for this. I was pretty wary about how they’d work for stranded knitting, but it actually wasn’t a problem at all: it played very nicely in the pattern and wasn’t hard on the hands to knit with. I did modify a couple of rows of one of the motifs to remove a 13-stitch float, which I thought would be a bit too long in a non-sticky yarn.

I picked the Hjertegarn because it comes in a really wide variety of bright shades, and not just a handful of baby pastels. I’d not bought from Rito Hobby before, and was a little nervous about them seemingly being a Denmark-based firm (post-Breixt import charges are a mystery to me), but they have a UK-based office or something, so it’s just like buying from a UK company, except that the parcel originates from Denmark somewhere.

My swatch cheerfully survived machine washing, and the yarn played nicely with steam blocking, too. What’s not to love?

The project overall turned out incredibly bittersweet: I’d be throwing ideas for it around with Liz for a couple of months, and she lent me a stack of fairisle books, and then I’d barely started knitting in earnest when she died. I’d be very much looking forward to showing her the work in progress when we met on the village green for tea, and -- frankly -- to having her guide me through the making-up process. Still, I muddled through it all and the seams turned out surprisingly well, all things considered. I’d only ever mattress-stitched cuddly toy clothes before, and there’s rather more room for manoeuvre there.

The sizing worked out well, too. It’s helped by mum and I being pretty much the same height and arm length. But even so, I didn’t fancy starting all over again if it’d turned out to be way off!

Would it be so bad if I came out to my family over text? I’ve tried so many times over the past 7 years and chicken out. I know it’s meant to be important and how I want to make it, but I don’t think I’ll ever have the courage in person.

Coming out is something that our society really puts too much empathis on. You don’t have to come out if you don’t want to (and since you say you’ve “chickened out” many times before, maybe you do not want to do that). Coming out is built up to be this freeing experience and that you can¨t really be yourself unless you do it, but I haven’t come out to my family - not because I think they won’t accept me (I’m lucky and know they will) but because I don’t care - and it doesn’t hinder me to be myself in any way around them. If you don’t want to come out there is no need to do so.

If you do want to and it really is just nerves, then yeah a text message is fine. That’s another thing that society does: it sensationalizes and basically fetishizes coming out. Like in some twisted vouyeristic sense. Like they make it this big emotional dramatic thing and sell it as entertainment, but really it’s all about the straight people’s feelings.

The Bohemian Rhapsody bio-pic is a great example of both a bad coming out and a good coming out (seen from the LGBTQ+ perspective). The Bad tm coming out is when Freddie comes out to Mary, his long time girlfriend whom he has been cheating on with men. It’s built up as this super dramatic moment where it really focuses on Mary to the point that when he comes out they capture her reaction but not Freddie’s, and the camera follows Mary as she goes on into this monologue how she can’t find a good man because this and that. Not only is it bad film making because Freddie is our POV character whom we have been following up until this point, and Mary really has been a minor role in whom we have few emotional stakes in, but it also focuses on the straight persons reaction in a film about a gay man and sensationalizes his emotions and pain at these words to be entartaining to the stratight audience (in this scene it’s really noticable that it’s a mobe by straight people for straight people).

Later the film does get it right though. It’s close to the finale and before Freddie heads to Live Aid he decides to swing by his parents’ hous with his boyfriend Jim Hutton to introduce him. The scene is quiet. His mom asks who Jim is. Freddie explains that “he’s my friend” and grabs Jims hand, and the family smiles and accepts this and a shot back at Freddie and Jim before they leave for Live Aid. 

Sorry for the movie stuff but this, I think really embodies the way comin out is expected to be (a big dramatic thing with many emotions at every angle) versus how most LGBTQ+ people want their coming out to be (quiet, accepting, there are emaotions but not over dramatic). 

So if you want a more low-key coming out - do it, most of us want it olw-key too. If sending a text is most comfortable for you, do that. Don’t put straight peoples’ emotions and opinions above your own in an inherently LGBTQ+ experience.
