19/11/2023
Hey everyone! Time for the bi-weekly tumblr update for Steamberry stuffs!
Summary
Finished writing all routes up through the end of chapter 9
Started working on editing for now
Added in-game achievements
Received some new BG art
Ramble
Okay, so writing-wise, I wrote Yren's content up through the end of chapter 9. Also revamped my end-route summaries for Yren and Raif.
The current word count is 426,000 words.
But I decided to hold off on finishing the endings for the four remaining routes. The main reason for this is that I have planned a lot of early-story changes that are going to shift the trajectory of the route endings. And I was really struggling with how to construct the route endings with those planned changes in a more nebulous state.
I usually try to avoid working out of order because I find it is not conducive to forward progress. But there are some points when you have to break the rules and go back to make important edits because you need them there in order to be able to move forward.
I'm kind of at that point.
So I decided I would fully edit Asher's route, which will allow me to inject all those planned changes into the story which will make it much easier to construct endings that call back to that earlier foreshadowing.
So writing-wise, that's what I've been doing this week. I am currently up to Chapter 6 in the edit (which means I'm a little less than half through the route).
Other Stuff:
I have received new BGs of course. Those are coming in at a fairly steady rate of 1.5 - 2 weeks each.
I also have decided to add in-game achievements to WSC. I've been thinking about it for a while but putting it off since I know that one more screen (like an achievements gallery) means more tweaks to the UI. But I finally sucked it up and did it anyway.
I've also been playing with a colour slider for Wil's sprite. I'm not going to go into detail about it here because I've talked about it more in depth on Patreon and will continue to post most of the details there.
But the idea is that instead of choosing from 3 skin tones and 2 hair colours, there would be colour sliders allowing for a much greater range of selection. One of the big concerns with colour sliders is whether or not the recolours can be made to look as good as recolouring manually - which has always been why I've stayed away from them.
The more complex shading styles have always struggled with colour sliders. But a developer friend - Feniks - has made a really cool and dynamic shader that actually can recreate even painterly or non-outlined art styles with incredible accuracy.
Using a slider is really useful because it increases the variations the player gets while *reducing* my work load. Instead of having to recolour manually, I would actually only need to colour everything once in grey scale.
Of course, it's not as easy as just dumping in the code and art. It requires some experimentation and learning but right now it is looking like I will be able to make it work. So I may be able to show off some examples in the future.
Screenshots:
None this time...
Upcoming Weeks:
I am currently editing Chapter 6 of asher/common routes and there are some pretty substantial edits I have to make.
It's always tricky to estimate what I will get done editing wise because editing does not flow at a more or less even pace like writing. Chapter 5, 6, and 7 had (and will have) major updates and changes so it may take a while to get through them. Though I'm already through with Ch 5. So...that's one of three.
Anyway.
And I'm also working on the GS lore book, still (LoL. 🙃). Someone today reminded me that I still need to go through all the deleted content to see if anything is salvageable for the lore book too.
😭
Thank you so much to that person (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. And you need to answer for your crimes, my friend.) 👀

Wow, this picture was a bit rough to paint. I made the bad decision of trying to do realistic shading and coloring, despite wanting to keep an anime styled otome game aesthetic. It took a bit of work to get it, but I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out in the long run! It definitely feels more painterly than my usual stuff.

hi !! i forgot to post these initially, but ive rewritten a bunch of stuff from my kny fantasy au :]
these are just general messy pieces of a couple people + infodumping below :]]c
(Piece 1)
Kyojuro and Senjuro are a duo of brothers born into the Rengoku family, that's left their sons especially well known for generations for their eagerness and being willing to assist others with any sorts of labour or tasks they're unable to complete by themselves. Being from a long line of centaurs, Kyojuro himself included, this gives them a lot of advantages over the general population who are predominantly human and allows them to physically handle a lot more. Senjuro, however, is a little bit of a different story- Shinjuro and Ruka Rengoku aren't an expected pairing from this bloodline, with Ruka being a faun lady rather than another centaur. Because of this, instead of being the norm, Senjuro, despite having the strong, usual features of a Rengoku, was born a faun, leading him to having to help people in a slightly different way to his elder brother. However, it doesn't stop him from accompanying Kyojuro out every now and then.
(Piece 2)
A well renowned group of performers, labelled misfits by some who have their reservations about their tales and music, Tengen Uzui and what are rumoured by some to be his three wives Suma, Makio and Hinatsuru have made a name for themselves here after coming out of nowhere with the girls' musical talents and Tengen's unique and self-described "flashy" appearance, often the initial factor drawing the common folk to their shows, to which they ultimately stay for their display, intrigued by their stories. Stories that are brought to life with stunning song and performance, allowing an almost vivid, painterly visual to appear to the audience. Whether this is merely their minds at work or truly a piece of the group's own magic is debated, but the true answer has yet to be revealed.
(Piece 3)
Within the Demigoddess of Life & Health's sanctuary of peace, the center at which her tree of life lies- accompanying her guardian Yushiro aswell are the two children she took in and under her wing while they were still quite young. An older brother and younger sister, Gyutaro and Daki are both satyrs with surprisingly, vastly different appearances. The duo were originally only to stay short-term- however as Lady Tamayo begins to realise that there is more to these two than first appears, she asks them personally if they would be willing to stay with her longer. The pair since a young age have experienced strange visions of an... inverted world, displaying many horrors beyond belief to commoners, however such tall tales have never been truly believed by anybody else, labeling the children as merely 'crying wolf' because their world has been at peace for centuries. Why these visions of theirs intrigue the Demigoddess is unknown, but when it's brought up, she often has a look of distant sadness on her face.
The duo were often left to their own devices as they grew older, and seemed to eventually grow to enjoy causing trouble, described by some as delinquents- though one day, a young man they had found near their home had caught their interest. He didn't appear to look anything like they had seen before- with scales and horns, almost reptilian in appearance, if he didn't have the face of a man, albeit his cheeks covered in scales. He introduced himself to the siblings as Kaigaku, and boldly stated he was a draconoid- however they had been presumed extinct for years. He had run away from his adoptive home... yet again, and had gone out into the forest to get away from the stuffiness back there, however ultimately got lost as he wasn't aware of where he was going, not often venturing out until recent years in 'teenage rebellion'. This was the start of the small group's friendship, as the young man would continue to come back to the siblings to see them specifically, which caused them to eventually enjoy one another's company. Lady Tamayo does have a few small reservations about him, though hasn't disclosed as to why to anybody.
(Piece 4)
Living within a small estate in the woods with her sisters- Shinobu is a doctor of sorts, though it certainly wouldn't be assumed at first glance, due to her more unprofessional approach. Don't allow that to fool you, however- due to her lesser magical and physical strength as a fairy, she instead has devoted herself to helping the less fortunate in a more medical way and has succeeded far more than the average run of the mill practitioner. She sometimes lurks over previous patients who suffered from particularly serious issues for a while, merely in order to keep her eyes on them and see how they fare. One previous patient in particular she's kept an eye on is a curious sorcerer- one... seemingly born with his powers, rather than having to study arcane text in order to gain them as most do. Glowing marks engraved on his skin, Giyuu was a rather unique case to the sisters. With his mortal body unable to fully handle his power's true extent, his form began to erode. It was only with the enchanted red bindings around his body he was able to contain his power, at the cost of his ability to use it as he pleases, it's repeated use often causing exhaustion. He's made a full recovery as of now, however with what's contained inside of him, his state is quite unpredictable and could change in the blink of an eye.

Hi!! I was wondering if its okay to ask what brushes u normally use in krita? I love your art!!
Thank you so much!!! I only use the ones available in Krita by default and I tend to jump around based on what I think will work best for each piece, but I can give a little rundown on which ones I use the most and what I use them for :)
Here's an image guide with each of the brushes I've used and that I recommend checking out:
Tumblr media
I'll highlight my favorites as well with some examples where they were predominantly used! (though in some cases multiple or even all of these brushes were used)
Marker Details:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Varying opacity and size makes this one my favorites for sketching, especially since it can easily be nearly transparent or fully opaque which helps with value range.
I also like using it for silhouette sketches!
It can also be used for final linework, but it takes more work to get to a full opaque and its lack of texture makes it a little less interesting than Ink-7 Brush Rough imo.
Ink-7 Brush Rough:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really good for linework, especially for comic styled drawings with it's slight texture, varying weight, and opaqueness.
Also good for just filling in entire areas with a single color as well as non-smoothed shading!
Wet Bristles Rough:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually just an amazing brush, its pressure sensitivity is crazy.
Blends strokes like paint and can vary in size and opacity.
Also has a nice subtle texture!
Amazing for smoother coloring and shading, especially if you want a more painterly style.
Watercolor Texture:
Tumblr media
(hard to show examples of this, just assume that I've used it in any piece that has smooth shading lol)
Not the best for painting/drawing on its own, however I've found it to be really useful when set to white or black on an overlay layer for adding extra shading and/or highlighting on top of the shading I've already done.
I usually shade individual figures, objects, and parts separately, but using an overlay layer with Watercolor Texture (or even Shapes Square) on top of everything helps make the entire piece feel more cohesive.
Also adds a hint more texture!
Another thing to note is the importance of layer modes!
Tumblr media
I know that you asked about brushes specifically, but many of these brushes (particularly those to do with effects and textures) work best when experimenting with different layer modes other than Normal. Overlay is generally a safe bet and most of the best for, well, overlaying multiple layers for interesting effects. But please try out all of them at any given opportunity, sometimes things like Burn, Color Dodge, Soft Light, etc can have more interesting effects!
In addition, mess with filter masks! You can even edit where they apply by drawing on the mask directly! HSV/HSL Adjustment (also accessible with ctrl+u) in particular is INSANELY useful for fiddling with the colors and balance of a piece, from individual layers to whole groups and drawings. I also really like blur filters, often times I'll duplicate a layer and make the bottom one blurred to add a glow affect to something without losing its definition.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While this latter stuff isn't about brushes specifically, its generally very important to how I use and experiment with all these different brushes!
Anyways I hope this helps!! I kinda went overboard with this post, but I had a lot of fun writing it! Thank you again for the wonderful ask!! :)

Thinking of Opening Commissions 🤔
I'm thinking of offering both character-based commissions, illustration commissions, and potentially some comic page commissions.
Character-based commissions would basically be like, bust or full figure finished character art against simple color backgrounds. I'm thinking for these I'd offer either my more typical "comic" style (Lineart with cell shading), as well as my more semi-realistic painterly style.
Illustration would be in a Lineart + Cell shading style, but be a full illustration with a background.
Comic pages would be as it implies, and I would probably charge per panel (?) and/or per page, with 2-5 panels per page (this is the average is what I usually tend to do). These too would be in a Lineart + Cell Shading artstyle.
I'll be open to fanart commissions, as well as for any original stuff (and in the case of Tolkien-based commissions, unless otherwise specified, I'd of course draw the characters how the commissioner wanted/envisioned them (rather than defaulting to have *I* draw the character(s))
I still need to think about pricing and get some examples/an official post put together, but if any of this sounds of interest to you, keep an eye out for when I make an official post about it :>

Not to be abnormal but the art you added for the commissions post with Don and Abe. Gee Whillikers. Goodness Gracious. Wowzers. Holy Guacamole AND Chips. What in the Sardines. you color very pretty (if you don’t mind me asking what’s ur process??)
it was an abe and donnie post first fdsfds i just added the commission stuff cuz i need money so bad-
but thank you!!! uhh the process really depends on the art piece since theres a lotta way things can go, but for this one here's a quick breakdown
first I doodles some thumbnails and wrote down the main colors I'd use (red & green)
i made a really rough sketch and then went over it on another layer. i dont really do line art so its more like a refined sketch tbh
then i blocked in the base colors and figured out the lighting, adding those in big blocks as well in a different layer
this piece is more painterly than i usually go for and i kinda wanted to honor that, so once i was sure about the base colors and the lighting colors, I merged them all together and kept refining the specific shapes.
Then once i was happy with that, I merged THAT layer with a copy of the lines so that I could treat it all like one big painting layer
the background actually came about last and after i made it I didn't like the colors I'd chosen, so i fucked around with some blending layers until I got it looking the way I wanted it to. here's the original background (left) with the edited one (right)
for a finishing touch i just added a paper texture and set it to multiply. i like adding textures i just usually forget to do it unless the texture is a brush im using
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this isn't my usual process, but tbh i dont really make finished pieces all that much these days. i mostly just do like, sketch comics & shit.
but yeah i dont have one process so much as a bunch of ways that i could potentially do it, which I then pick and choose from as I desire. i almost always start with a thumbnail/pre sketch these days though.

any tips on lineart or coloring? I adore your art style!!!!!
thank you! this post might be a little rambley because i'm not the best at explaining things
ok for starters, i don't want to go into my own personal preferences for choosing colors too much. when i started drawing i really stuck with what other artists said was the "correct" way to do things and that can really hinder your art a lot, so i'm going to give general descriptions of colors and color schemes and let you decide which ones you find the most appealing or enjoyable to use. i think choosing colors comes down to personal preference most of all. don't take anything i (or any other artist) say as law, drawing is a lot more fun when you make your own decisions about it. if you want to use a lot of super bright/dull colors, or no colors at all, go for it! your art should be what you want it to. this post is more for people who want to know more about color schemes than for people who want to draw exactly how i do lol
also you can use solid black and white in your art its not illegal and it doesn't always look bad idk why this is such a common thing people say in tutorials/tips about colors
Tumblr media
color schemes can be monochromatic or polychromatic, with my art i usually use different colors but i like to use monochromatic schemes sometimes too, art can look very nice with both of them. characters with multiple colors (like kirby) can be drawn with monochromatic palettes as long as you have varying values of the color.
with polychromatic color schemes, remember that less is more! limit your colors and try not to use way too many, it makes things less confusing. reuse colors for different things instead of adding new ones
Tumblr media
value is how light or dark a color is. i like to use color schemes with a lot of tints (or pastel colors), usually with a few darker colors in order to define shapes a little better. value is Very important to make the thing you're trying to draw clear to see and separate details from each other, so i'd study this before learning about picking colors individually.
Tumblr media
saturation is how "intense" a color is. it's different from value, and it works alongside it (saturated/desaturated colors have tints and shades.) i don't use many very saturated or destaturated colors, and a lot of my art kind of lies in the middle. when i do use them, i try not to put very saturated and very desaturated colors together in the same color scheme, as using all of one or the other can make things more cohesive. (also, don't make dark skintones too desaturated. they should be in the middle)
the most important thing to remember about color schemes is that colors don't work independently, they look best when they're cohesive with other colors. think about how you want something to look before you color it, consider if it's supposed to look cute or have a gloomy/dark feel, if its daytime or night, etc. try not to follow a character's reference sheet colors too strictly, and change them as needed given what you want your finished art to look like.
lineart is a lot more simple (at least to me). i usually use a dark blue or whatever color i associate with the character for it, and i like to keep the stablization setting very low, as that helps it make look more sketchy/painterly. (i use clip studio paint, so if anyone wants these brushes let me know and i'll put them in a different post)
Tumblr media
hopefully this was a little helpful and not too much of a pain to read! i've gotten a Lot of asks about this so i felt like i should make this post as detailed as i can. do look for other resources if you want to learn more about this stuff, there's people way better at explaining things than i am lol

2. five favorites of your own work?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Which artists inspire you the most?
Ooooof there's A LOT. I'll try not to say too many. @heikala really inspires me to work traditionally. @ghostember has such a lovely painterly style with great use of color. I love Deb JJ Lee's coloring style. @toastyglow and @sandflakedraws do really well with lighting and drawing the figure. And MANY more but if I listed them all we'd be here all day.
22. When is your prime time to work on your art?
Honestly I really like working on stuff during my lecture classes. Other than that usually from morning to mid afternoon, once it gets too late in the evening I start watching stuff I care about more and have a harder time focusing. But ultimately whenever I can manage it (except right now - I'm having a bit of block rn for my next PMV, having a hard time visualizing the lyrics)

Hello! For the weirdly specific artist asks: 4, 9, 21 and 29? C:
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw   I often talk about hair being a struggle for me, and the pinnacle of that experience for me is Shungus o7 Outside of that, I am never fully happy with the way I draw food, I wish it looked tastier
9. What are your file name conventions   I do name all of my art files, and usually stick to something that is silly, but still conveys to me what exactly each file is. Here is a random selection of my art file names as an example :3c
Tumblr media
21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways   Easier to show than explain, but think @/fourleafisland and @/cocochoon.. I lean more towards slightly “painterly” rendering lately….
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically   There’s a lot of those tbh. At this point, like, everything I enjoy that is not Enstars T_T I’d love to draw some Muse Dash stuff, for example, or Talentless Nana, but I just can’t ueueue

1, 11, 19 and 21 for the ask game!
YIPPEEEE
1 - Art programs you have but don’t use?
I mooch off my mother’s Adobe account, so I have photoshop… but never actually use it for art. I also have Gimp and MS Paint, but never open them, I’m wayyy too used to Firealpaca LMAO
11 - Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what?
Oh god. Okay. My music taste is ALWAYS shifting, so this answer is complicated. Sometimes I put my liked list on shuffle because it’s just easier than picking. Sometimes I put the five songs I’m obsessed with at any given time on repeat. Sometimes it’s the Danganronpa OST (refer to my username!). Lately it’s been a lot of System of a Down, specifically ATWA.
Usually, however, if I’m drawing someone else’s character, I ask if they have a playlist for that character, or if they associate any particular genre with them! Music usually gets me in a certain mood, and then I channel that mood into the personality and expression of what I draw. I can’t draw something light and pastel if I have metal music blasting.
It also gets difficult sometimes because I have bad misophonia. Most stuff that’s super soft or calm I cannot listen to or I want to blast holes in drywall like a guy named Kyle on too much Monster, so by that point I just put on the tamer stuff of my liked list.
19 - Favorite inanimate objects to draw?
One I love that many artists apparently can’t relate to is guitars specifically. I love bass and electric guitars because they have incredibly fun shapes and can be decked out with a lot of stickers if your character’s particularly cool. Acoustic guitars aren’t AS fun for me, but I still get a lot of enjoyment out of the shapes!
21 - Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways?
This one’s a tough one for me to answer. I’ve never been particularly fond of hyperrealism, and my style borders an interesting edge between anime and Western cartoon (interestingly, someone has compared it to Boondocks before, where it’s a more Western cartoon style with heavy anime influence).
I will say the ones that stick out to me are pretty much any lineless or painterly styles that still manage a sharp, contrast-y look. Things that use a lot of saturated colors and excellent lighting work incredibly for me! I also will admit, I’m kind of a sucker for the “generic” anime style used for most vtube models. I watch a lot of Live2D showcases in my spare time.
(Also gonna take the time to plug my buddy @5tar-boy’s work because that style is NOTHING like my own, but their work with colors and designs is CAPTIVATING.)
Thank you for the ask!!

Following up on the poll I chucked out into the ether last week - thank you all for participating!
I really wanna show some love to the less popular boyo’s cuz there isn’t enough for them in the art department.
Starting strong with a portrait for
Rudy 💥

Lmk what you think! It’s a bit more painterly than my usual, but he was super interesting to draw 🥰
Stay tuned for the next one - thank you all again for taking part! Keen to grab your thoughts on some *ahem* other stuff in th near future

All of these art prompts are exposing the fact that I actually have 12 different art styles LOL.
I just don’t do a ton of more stylized stuff on here that often, but the prompts are bringing it back out.
Mostly bc i’ve been channelling a lot of focus into learning a more painterly digital art style rather than my usual bold lineart way.

Orderly Sketches - Words of Power Runners-up ~
With sincerest apologies for the delay, I'd like to congratulate the runners up for this week: @corporalotherbear, @hypexion, and @reaperfromtheabyss!
Scrying Orb - @corporalotherbear I was expecting to see at least one Artifact - Focus this week, and I adore how you've executed on the concept. Encouraging people to assemble a whole bunch of foci to enhance the power of their spells is rad, and having them be common, nonlegendary, and only allowing one to trigger per spell do an excellent job of balancing them and distinguishing them from Shrines. My only real concern is one of space: While you don't need a whole lot focuses in one set to make this schtick work (a horizontal cycle is probably sufficient? Could probably even get away with just three), the range of effects that one can scale in this way at common is, I feel, potentially a bit narrow. Could you print a Focus that, for example, deals damage to players, scaling based on number of other focuses? I honestly don't know. I feel like that could get a bit more potent for common than is generally desirable. Regardless, I do love what these are trying to do. Good stuff.
Bladesight Adept - @hypexion Now on to something I wasn't actually expecting this week: Focus counters. The Adept here I think does a very good job of explaining what the deal with focus counters in this set is, and it's rather easy to imagine the kinds of directions one could take the mechanic. If I have one thing to critique here, it's that I'm somewhat afraid that the presence of focus counters in a set may skew the average toughness of creatures a bit higher than usual (Focus counters on a 1/1 don't accomplish all that much), and that may make for a bit of a grindier limited format than is desirable, especially if people feel discouraged from attacking with their focused creatures for fear of losing the counter. Definitely an interesting mechanic with a lot of potential room to explore, but I can't help but be slightly afraid that it might play worse than it looks for these reasons. Certainly not afraid enough to bring me to knock this down from contention, but still.
Wild Caricaturist - @reaperfromtheabyss Rounding off our runners this week, we have the Wild Caricaturist, and their lovely Sketch tokens. A more painterly approach to the word, I do love the idea of this mechanic, which sits at a sort of midpoint between Treasures and Energy. I am a little afraid that getting the right Sketch density for the Sketch economy might involve turning the entire set into a wild rainbow mess, but that's mostly just speculation on my part, and also I love rainbow messes, so, not especially pressed there. The Caricaturist itself is a very nice rare, regardless, with a nice bit of tension between the Sketch generation ability and the copy ability, though I do think it could get away with maybe being a smidge large? Excellent stuff regardless. -@starch255

Art asks - 26, 21, or 7? c:
7: A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
Paint in general 🥲 Some people (cough cough you) are sooooooo good with paint and make such beautiful things with it and I just can not use it. One time I did an okay oil painting of strawberries in high school art class, other than that if I pick up a paintbrush I will create Bad Things 😭
21: Art style nothing like your own but you appreciate anyway
I loooooove really simple, round art with strong lines and cell shading, it's so pretty and just like... easy to enjoy. Good example would be Nathan & Jacob Drawfee, their usual styles are just so appealing.
26: What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation than you expected?
Honestly most of my stuff turns out roughly how I planned. If I try something new, I set out thinking "Okay, this is where I'm going to try out this new thing." The only recent exception would be my first drawing of Yasmin, with the bright blue background and the dramatic lighting. It turned out way more painterly and saturated than expected!
