Favourite personal weapon?
(you CANNOT say battleaxe!)
probably scythe. like i know it's not really good at all for like. combat. but like look at that shit. pretty dope blade while i hold the stick. sooo cool.
#ask#anon#im not sure anything else really compares. i dont honestly think about real life weapons that much really that said.#not without being like. shotgun. or double barreled shotgun. atleast if were restricted to melee combat here.#most games i tend to play shotgun a lot#except tf2 recently where ive been shooting pee darts and donking folks with cannon balls#granted. i range from class to class with no real like... goal? whatever fits the situation and that im confident in.#like i like playing soda popper milk fan o war scout a lot. i like playing pee sniper w/ shahanshah.#for demo i tend to always go loose cannon scottish resistance scottish handshake#scottish resistance cause i like coating a battlefield with stickies and just doing my best to detonate them when i think its important to#fucking hate sticky spamming btw. valve had the right idea nerfing that shit when they did. yknow. before they reverted it.#those things should be doing 60 damage when spammed... and like can do 144 after like a second or two or whatever#that way it punishes spamming and rewards using them as traps#but then the people who have sticky stranges would get mad or whatever. idk. its weird to me that valve reverted the nerf somewhat#it does a lot of damage and you dont gotta even hit the enemy directly with the projectile. so its an easy weapon.#idk.#for heavy i dont have a real loadout im happy with. i tend to go brass beast family business and eviction notice#ik tomislav is like the best overall minigun but. idk.#eviction notice really sucks but once someones pestering me up close i really like to chase them down while punching them#since most of the 9 classes cant get out of range. ive managed to do it a bunch despite how much i dont like the weapon.#like. i wish it didnt have the max health drain. id prefer if like. i couldnt be overhealed if i had them equipped.#the slight speed increase is. okay. paired with the increase in speed when hitting a player.#though if it was simplified. id add those two stats together for the on hit attribute.#so like... less damage. faster swing speed. faster movement when hitting an enemy for a second. and no overheal when equipped.#instead of it just being a weirder worse gru.#that way its just about punishing players who get too close. and makes you weaker if youve got a medic. since you cant be overhealed.#soldier... i just use rocket launcher/black box panic attack and whip. nothing really unique about my playstyle with him.#engineer. panic attack pistol gunslinger or jag.#im no good with the widowmaker and i like having 6 shots so id rather not use the frontier justice.#anyway im at the tag limit. thank you for the ask anon!!!

mad max, the party's zoomer - apoc au character details under the cut!
---
max's role in the party:
a runner - fast and quiet, tends to be the one who makes out with the most supplies
mechanic - knows best about cars and is one of the party's designated drivers (the other being mike)
medic - not as skilled with plants and medicine like will, but is good with first aid and physical treatment!
thief - who the party sends out if they need to "borrow" from other groups (second nature to her)
skills + hobbies:
incredible with melee weapons and hand-to-hand combat -> everything she knows was taught to her by billy
decent shot, but prefers using melee way more!
stealthy, like a ninja - her and el are the quietest in the party! max's fighting style is much more brawler-like despite this
good with card games (likes poker, speed and BS) -> likes to play them with the party a lot, but in particular with dustin and lucas
skateboards whenever she can -> her favorite thing to do next to driving!
really loves listening to music (fave artists are madonna, taylor swift and destiny's child) -> likes having el or will in shotgun so they can listen together!
quirks / fun facts:
whenever dustin goes to bed, max takes his current handheld and tries to beat his high score on whatever retro game he's currently playing (dustin does not know its max who's actively beating his ass on dig dug and tetris)
she took billy's jacket and baseball bat and made them her own - very complicated relationship with him and her upbringing with her stepbro made her very skeptical and suspicious of others (especially the party when she first met them)
when she steals things, she tries to keep the party in mind when grabbing extra :')
--- other notes: ladies and gentlemen, our newest addition - maxine! i'll admit, the two characters i think i'm most shoddy on for their characterizations are dustin and max. since max's story in my au is so heavily tied to her issues with trusting people again (specifically men) and family, i'm scared that it will make her character intrinsically tied to relationships instead of having her own character. i'll try my very best for it not to be that way, of course!
for now, she's how i imagine her in the show - she's still a cheeky, sarcastic, stubborn and awesome tomboy with insurmountable trust and distance issues, and i love her for that! the circumstances that drew her to the party are currently a secret, but i will establish now that billy is tied to her storyline and how the party meets her for the first time - while billy's an interesting character in his own right, i straight up don't like him :P so i'm warning people now that billy's more a plot device for max's arc and i probably won't be diving incredibly deep into his character. this is a party centric au after all!
when i was thinking of max's character, i was trying to keep the things she liked in mind and why she was so cool in the first place! ofc, she had to skateboard, even if it was only a little, and she's honestly just great at games in general (to dustin's dismay).
her upbringing in canon and the way she acts is pure "survival instinct" behavior. she knows first aid, she knows how to drive, she escapes vecna, she's incredibly independent! she's a fighter, through and through. she's also not really one to hesitate often to be hands on, and i can see it in the way she acted seasons 2-4 :')
lucas is almost done - maybe a few days give or take!

Alright, I finished Engage the other day. My comments regarding gameplay reflect on Hard Mode. I’ve not played Normal. I’m currently playing Maddening. Let that inform what’ll be written in here when it comes to gameplay. Here’s what I have to say about Engage.
I gotta say, from minute one to the endgame, the gameplay is truly excellent. Very tight map design, excellent balance, at no point does it feel like they drop the ball, they made the gameplay airtight, it is excellent Strategy RPG. I’ll come back to the gameplay in a second, that needed to be said off rip, now, the story, the story is very basic and doesn’t really have much going for it, but at the same time, it’s not infuriating. It doesn’t get a great grade, it doesn’t get a good grade, but it gets a passing grade because the least a video game narrative can do when not blowing my scrotum off like a shotgun blast from how good it is or when not being just solid, is be inoffensive and save you the frustration from having to deal with something truly braindead and infuriating. Fire Emblem Fates Conquest, for example, had truly phenomenal gameplay, but the story wasn’t just bad, it was insultingly bad, it was an ever-present wasp sting that didn’t leave you the hell alone, it was a wound on the inside of your mouth that made every meal taste like iron. Engage isn’t that, and I know “the story isn’t a horrible wasp sting” doesn’t sound like big praise at face value, but when you give me great SRPG gameplay, yeah, I think that suffices.
Something I find very unfortunate is that they backloaded their fun characters and more interesting story beats: I fundamentally dislike backloaded games because a game should draw me in frame one and be fun from there on, not pile everything on the last 20% of the game. I shouldn’t have to earn the fun of my game, the game should be worth my time from the moment I turn it on. While the game is in fact worth your time the whole time in terms of gameplay, the characters and narrative are very forgettable and without much substance at all: I think here is where Engage should’ve taken a page from Three Houses, a game with excellent Supports.
The style of Supports that Awakening used -- simple background, skit-like, usually very surface level -- and used to great success, may I add, doesn’t land too well nowadays in a post-Three Houses world where Supports were for the most part very introspective, engaging, and delved into interesting facets of both the characters and their circumstances in the world, in the setting. The only exceptions here would be Byleth’s supports with the cast, which tended to be surface level with the purpose of introducing you to the character, their main hat, and what to expect from them on a vacuum, to give you a better idea where the character was coming from in their meaty Supports with other characters, which is honestly a pretty good structure. Engage is more similar to the Awakening style rather than the Three Houses style, to its detriment. However, it does, again, not reach the point of being intolerable, and what good supports you can find there, are worth the time. Going back to Engage being narratively backloaded, the supports of the early game characters are utterly anesthetic, whereas the latter characters dare to get silly, meatier, and deeper. A Pandreo support or a Panette support is worth a hundred Boucheron or Celine supports, we could say.
There is another satchel of credit I will give Engage because I think it’s well worth it: It manages to be Not Yucky With Its Characterization. I’m serious, I appreciate this a lot, because I’ll be the first one to tell you Fire Emblem can get Very Yucky With Its Characterization. For example, two of my favorites, Pandreo and Panette, are siblings. This is not brought up in any Support that is not the support line with each other. Panette is a grown-ass woman that doesn’t go onii-chan this onii-chan that or bases her entire personality on having an older brother. She’s her own person. Pandreo is a grown-ass man that doesn’t obsess over his sister or bases his entire personality on having to protect his younger sister. They’ll occasionally pay reference to one another without names in other conversations when it’s relevant (Panette and Fates’ Corrin converse about how Corrin had to fight her own siblings, to which Panette responds with “oh yeah I feel you, I threw down with my brother a bunch as well when we were kids lol”), and their own support line is very mature and introspective, regarding their current lot in life compared to their very rough childhood. The caliber of supports, when they are not nothingburgers or trying to be skits, is pretty good and in line with this. At least from the several supports I’ve seen, there’s not been any pervasive gross nonsense or anything too tropey. When the worst I can say about supports in a Fire Emblem is that some of them are snoozefests, which is always the case anyways, and not “whatever the fuck the Soleil supports in Fates were where she’s given ‘magic powder’ so she, who likes women, likes men instead”, yeah, that’s a w as well.
If I had to summarize the narrative prowess of the game, again, I’ll say it gets a passing grade, but credit where it’s due: Instead of trying to push boundaries, Fire Emblem Engage instead brought up the lower floor of the writing usually found in Fire Emblem games. It doesn’t do anything special, but it expertly avoids being gross or irritatingly lazy.
Now, the gameplay! Oh, the gameplay. Yeah, it’s really tight, well designed, and I want to talk about something I never see people praise when it comes to Fire Emblem, even though it deserves praise: The onboarding user experience, the accessibility to new players wishing to try the game out, is superb every time. The games have become incredible at welcoming new players, and it deserves praise. It’s really a “make your own experience” kind of deal with Engage! As per the last few Fire Emblems, you can select your difficulty at the start, between Normal, Hard and Maddening (Normal gets unlimited uses of Time Rewind, Hard and Maddening get 10 per stage), but also you can select between Classic style or Casual style: Classic means units that die in non-training settings (like the first few maps with Lumera or during Training skirmishes with allied nations) die for good and you can’t use them again, or Casual style, which doesn’t permakill your units. In addition to this, the Main Story is very well balanced to account for the player not taking Skirmishes. This means that if you’re playing in non-Maddening Mode (Skirmishes are practically non-existent in Maddening) and you find the game too difficult, you can grind out a few Skirmishes to pump up your stats, get materials for upgrades, and try again at your own rhythm. Skirmishes are tuned to your average level +1 or 2, the exact science isn’t clear yet, but it means Skirmishes will always be a bit stronger than you, making you work a bit, but not too much, for that grinding. Or, if you prefer to take the game’s challenge as intended, you just don’t do Skirmishes and the game is perfectly tuned to that to give you a fair challenge. It’s great! You can customize your own gameplay experience naturally, by playing, instead of going into a menu and selecting “Money times 1000%” or “EXP increased 500%” or anything, which is ideal in my opinion.
If you’re doing Maddening, your first run has fixed stat rates for your units. This means that your units’ growth works towards a level up instead of having a random chance of leveling up: If a unit has a 40% growth in Speed, level 1 -> 2 won’t level up Speed, 2 -> 3 won’t either, because 40 + 40 is 80%, but on level 3 -> 4 you will always get that Speed level, because it just went to 120%, and now you have 20% progress towards the next Speed point. Assuming you know the growth rates, you ALWAYS know what you’ll get and you won’t get. This means they balanced the game around these values, which is very encouraging; my experience so far in Maddening has been VERY fun and well balanced. When they actually balance their Maddening difficulties (COUGH UNLIKE THREE HOUSES COUGH OR NEW SHADOW DRAGON’S EXTRA DIFFICULTIES COUGH), Fire Emblem at the highest level is sincerely the best SRPG experience out there. It doesn’t happen every time, but when it does, it is.
So the game will always be as challenging as you want it to be. This is a powerful thing.
The maps are tightly designed, the skill combos you can make are incredible, but SP-gated, which is intelligent conservation of available resources for gameplay, and the flow of player strength vs enemy strength is very well done. While Smash is an unfortunately worthless mechanic overall except in very niche cases, Break is very good: It’s a tool the player and the enemy can both use, and it’s part of what encourages a such potent Player Phase gameplay, which I think is the best thing this game did: Make Player Phase powerful.
The thing with Enemy Phase being strong is that the game becomes incredibly stale: Three Houses has very powerful Enemy Phase, >H*roes has very powerful Enemy Phase, most SRPGs have powerful Enemy Phase gameplay, even in Fire Emblem. This is a problem, because it means you just send a sufficiently souped up unit into every enemies’ range -- A leveled Ike in Path of Radiance, Tomahawk Edelgard or Close Counter Claude in Three Houses, a souped up RR like Amuro or Kamille or souped up SR like Kouji or Tetsuya in SRW -- and you just win, they will step in and they will handle it. Cathartic, sure, but not really challenging! Also, enemies tend to have aggro-links, meaning that aggroing one enemy in a small cluster (or ‘squad’) tends to aggro all of those enemies, and they tend to have the one with less movement on the front and those with more movement on the back, meaning that they WILL be able to all hit the same unit the moment they move in range, means that you can’t just pull enemies one by one. This is amazing! Because pulling enemies one by one is the solution to many old Fire Emblems, and that’s not hard at all! All of these things mean that the gameplay necessitates you to take risks instead of always giving you a safe option. This is good, because not all risks are equal, and you have to figure out the lesser risk in order to properly engage with the enemy, and hopefully be able to take them out as quickly as possible as soon as you lock with them. Engage is incredibly good at this, at making active gameplay triumph over passive gameplay, and this should be lauded, it’s excellent design, maps, enemy stats and enemy groups are thoroughly thought out, and they addressed the whole Active Versus Passive dilemma without going full Disgaea, which is definitely a Player Phase series of games but that suffers from a whole other problem: Player Phase is literally the only thing you can do and is less SRPG and more puzzle game due to its Rocket Tag + Big Grind nature.
So, overall? I think Engage is a pretty good game, and I recommend it. In many ways, it raised a lot of red flags -- I myself denounced it pre-release -- but when showtime came and it pried open its thorax for the world to see everything it had to offer? Yes, I will approve of Engage, it has a weak narrative and it’s not perfect -- even on gameplay, I can tell you Class balance and some weaponry balance is off, like single weapon advanced classes like Swordmaster, Berserker and Sniper being shit, and Lances in general being a bit scuffed -- but it’s incredibly solid otherwise in every other department, and no single aspect of it is truly bad and irritating, it simply floats on a scale of a-ok to good, with its gameplay being superb. If you care a lot about narrative, well, Vestaria Saga is out there, but if you want a very good, very well designed, lovingly crafted gameplay experience, Fire Emblem Engage is worth your doubloons and your time.

Hi! First and foremost, thank you so much for being a person who keeps me informed about what's happening in the world of RPGs! I was wondering if you could give some advice: I've written a small RPG for two or more players that can be 100% played over email, and now I'm trying to figure out how to get it into people's hands. If I could make even $1 on it, that would be incredible, but my first goal is honestly just to get it to the people who would be interested in playing. Do you know how to best distribute a small RPG like this? How do people find new RPGs? Thanks so much!
Hi! First of all, thank you for the kind words! Second of all, I'm really out of my depth here so I might be speaking completely out of my whole ass but I hope I can help here! If any indie RPG writers seeing this want to chime in, please do, because I feel really unqualified to answer this question.
So, itch.io is a platform primarily for distributing video games, but in recent years has also seen a lot of use as a platform for distributing RPGs. It seems to be especially well-liked by the indies for reasons I won't pretend to understand but which to my knowledge stem from frustrations with DriveThruRPG, the up until now de facto RPG distribution platform. I know @bowtochris distributed his first RPG, Shotguns & Socialites, there, maybe he can share some insights into it?
I can only speak for myself, but the way I personally find new RPGs these days is mostly through Tumblr. Tumblr has a pretty big community of independent RPG writers who are as a rule extremely cool and nice people, and very supportive of each other to boot. I end up seeing a lot of new RPGs simply by virtue of having followed a few writers on here, cause new interesting games tend to spread like wildfire throughout the community. Obviously there are RPG communities all over the internet, but before you jump into an RPG group on Reddit or Facebook or something do remember to check their rules on self promotion, because it might be looked down on in some groups and promoting your game in a group that doesn't allow it won't earn you any favors.
But since you're already here on Tumblr, you can just make a big ol' post about your game and tag it appropriately. A lot of people follow tags relevant to their interests so tagging your big post about your game with #rpg or #ttrpg or #tabletop will probably get a few eyes on it. Do be mindful of the fact that tag spam will just get you blocked by most people: don't tag your post as #dnd, because most people following that tag follow it for Dungeons & Dragons and seeing unrelated RPGs pop up in that tag is just rude.
I mentioned that there are many interesting indie RPG writers here and there are actually too many for to name, but I definitely recommend you check out @indiepressrevolution and @indierpgnewsletter. They may have some insights into the nitty gritty of distributing your first RPG.
Also, I want to hear more about this RPG of yours.

For the ship-game - Kaidan/Ashley <3
Gives nose/forehead kisses Kaidan Gets jealous the most Ashley Picks the other up from the bar when they’re too drunk to drive They're usually at the bar together, so whatever space Uber is Takes care of on sick days Both, although Ash tends to be more of a Tough Love kind of caretaker lol Drags the other person out into the water on beach day Ashley Gives unprompted massages Kaidan Drives/rides shotgun They argue over who is driving all the time, and eventually decide it doesn't matter as long as its not Shepard Brings the other lunch at work Ashley. Kaidan forgets his lunch a lot Has the better parental relationship Ashley. Kaidan has a good relationship with his parents, but BaAT is still something that kind of hangs like a storm cloud Tries to start role-playing in bed Kaidan. Its ridiculous and dorky and adorable Embarrassingly drunk dancer Both tbf. No one in Mass Effect can dance Still cries watching Titanic Ashley but she will punch you and deny it if you tell anyone Firmly believes in couples costumes Kaidan. He insists and Ashley thinks its silly, but it makes him smile so she goes along with it anyway Breaks the expensive gift rule during Christmas Neither. They don't have this rule. Both of them know better than to have a rule like this because they're going to get each other whatever they want anyway, and its not like they don't have the credits. Makes the other eat breakfast Kaidan. He forgets his lunch a lot, but Ash is not a morning person and frequently tries to go to work without having anything but coffee Remembers anniversaries Both Brings up having kids I think Ashley is the one that brings it up.

21. A boss that was disappointing
Post-Overnerf-Pre-Nerf-Fix Radahn - Elden Ring
youtube
bear with me i know this sounds like i'm waffling given i said i enjoyed the radahn boss fight in a previous answer. also apparently the internet has deemed radahn content to be like cringe or whatever and they stomp their little baby feet when you talk about the Radahn Nerf either because they are mad that he's no longer too hard for normies or because they're annoyed someone is talking about radahn so ??? damned if you do damned if you don't lol but anyway it was still early into the era of elden ring and by the time i got to him, i had already heard oough radahn difficult, but also knew of the nerf. but i, a fromsoft baby, was like there's no way a nerf can save me from myself. i even set up a stream because i thought oh surely me getting my cheeks clapped severely by this boss will be entertaining. i go in, i beat the guy in one go and i'm like oh. hm. i still think its a cool setup and all that but the second time around after they fixed it was a lot more satisfying than the first fight.
Literally Every Boss On Easy Mode - Silent Hill 2
youtube
i'm not one to knock easy modes but i personally regret going through silent hill 2 on easy mode. the abstract daddy in the very tiny room sounded like it was going to be ass because i heard it hits hard so i said oh jeez this is the end and i think it took like two shotgun shots to kill.
My Fucking Debts - Animal Crossing New Horizons
youtube
2020 may have hurt me irl but i was thriving in animal crossing!!! i used to do the stalk market every fucking week for months on end and i think i ended up with like 32 million by the time i stopped so needless to say i was an unstoppable force when it came to paying debts off. it even got to the point where if there were too any flowers/weeds in a spot, i'd just rip a resident's house off of the ground and put it down on top of the flowers/weeds to destroy them then i'd move the house back to where it was.
31. Someone has never played a video game before but is open to trying any genre. What game would you recommend as their first?
i think overall it depends on the person but narrative or party games seem like a good way to introduce people to video games. narrative can backfire if they end up being like Why Am I Not Doing Shit because turns out they wanted to like. idk kill. but there's usually a lot less pressure to perfect mechanics before you can get anywhere so they probably won't get frustrated in that sense. party games also don't tend to have the most complicated mechanics and its usually nice to try something new with other people also participating. easy entry, still fun.

ACVI is probably the widest disconnect between the degree to which I feel good at the game and the degree to which I like the overall feel of the game I've ever experienced, with Ultrakill as a runner-up.
I've only just gotten to the end of Chapter 1. I got bopped for getting greedy in CH2M1 and going for combat logs on those Tetrapods while being too scared to take resupplies out of fear that I'd get locked into that room before finding everything, and haven't really attempted that one since because frankly I'm gonna need to devise a build with more ammo first, while also just buying out half the shop in general so I don't get stuck without an easy way to overwhelm a boss again. ("oh look at me i beat Balteus with shotguns you don't need pulse weapons to do it" well i didn't have those either, genius)
Now factor in my job, the fact I'm going for a trip this weekend, and my sheer executive dysfunction, and I don't anticipate to get anywhere close to the end for a few months.
It makes me think about why I tend to shy away from games I know to be hard, you know? One definite factor is that beating something hard is just not satisfying to me. The way people describe the feeling of a boss being a pain in the ass enhancing the feeling of winning is alien to me. I feel bad during the attempts and I almost feel worse when I beat it. I get mad and cuss it out as it goes down, far from the usual reaction you see from people who like that sort of thing.
On top of that I'm never sure if I got good or if I got lucky. I don't think I'd suddenly be able to do what I did again- and I swear I straight-up glitched Balteus because while it brought the flamethrowers out at 50% HP the winning run didn't see it pop assault armor until it was at like 25%, and I two-cycled the thing. Ultrakill, Claire de Soliel on Violent, my approach essentially got patched out with the harder weapon freshness rules now. Marauder, all that time ago, yeah I ate too many hits, with only a few successful attempts at sidestepping as I stood at optimal range with the SSG out- would not have flown on any higher difficulty. At least ACVI doesn't make me have to wrap my brain around constant weapon switching, though, but the fact that I tend to play all at once without taking breaks until I'm done, out of fear that I'll forget tricks I do pick up, probably also isn't helping my performance or my mood. I stayed up for like three hours on Balteus, it just wasn't fun.
After the AH12 I felt great, that was like three attempts. Juggernaut went down in two, that optional Tetrapod was like three, and I was shredding every conventional AC I found. I kinda joined into the meme of "the Souls fans don't know how to comprehend a vertical axis." That, I feel, is kind of true. Flight is an adjustment that came naturally to me because it's just part of the games I play the most. I felt vindicated that a group I saw as acclimated to hard games was hitting a rut when they encountered a challenge I dealt with on the regular. But from everything I hear, it's almost like having an easy time with the Helo and Juggernaut, and even Sulla, who I chewed up and spat out in a matter of seconds, is almost an indicator of how bad you're gonna do on Balteus.
It's here that it all caught up to me. I can flaunt how the movement fits me like a glove, but anyone who's just used to hard games in general has a lot that I don't. Reaction times, adaptability, planning, tilt-resistance, and, of course, fucking mindset- the ability to enjoy the gauntlet, or at least to walk away and come back refreshed.
I don't have these, and I don't think I can learn them.
This is kind of where the shitty difficulty discourse we've been in for ten years breaks apart. Souls games initially seemed like a mix of just not looking like my type of game on a functional level, and too hard for me to approach, and with what looked like little reward for a lot of struggling, I simply didn't. With how popular they are, it eventually hit me that they actually do look really fun when they're not pushing your nose into the dirt. I wanna play them in some context where I can be kept from getting mad, streaming them with friends or something (unfortunate that the one that looks the most appealing to me is also currently the least accessible).
Here comes ACVI, which I knew was gonna be hard but, hey, at least it closes the other side of that equation, maybe I'll have fun losing or even "git gud" and have some talent to show for it. Then Balteus made me feel fucking ill and I just don't know anymore. I kinda just want to go back to drawing for the last few hours of this weekend, but I'm afraid I'll never finish it if I do. Maybe a more functional version of me would see that break as exactly what she needs to come back and crush it but with the brain I have here and now that's not happening and this is at serious risk of becoming a second Signalis situation.

hi midi im a little curious, who do you main in tf2? idk if you provided that info already but im feeling a liiiitle nosy right now.... in my years of playing the game i was maining mostly demoman but i dabbled in some sniper too. wasnt the best when it came to aim compared to now so i used the huntsman a lot for those "randomly let go of the charge key and get a kill" shots JDKFHSP both were fun to use tho. you?
im a soldier boy 🫡😎 i was using the direct hit for a while for the speed but then i realised my aim is ass so i use the original now. im not too good at rocket jumping but it is quite fun! i dont tend to do it because of the damage making it more risky. i have the gunboats but i dont use them in my main loadout cuz it means having to give up my shotgun which is #scary !
i dont play sniper much but if i do ill either use the huntsman or sydney sleeper. my aim is not that accurate and my lag most certainly doesnt help LOL. jarate always stays on secondary tho 💪
my second most played class is pyro. i dont play them as much nowadays but i used to play as her a lot during my early days. sometimes i just like to w+m1 and thats okay 👍
demoman is actually my least played class LOL ! its due to the Scary but i want to figure him out bc last time i played as him i did have fun even if i wasnt very good, and i did manage to get a few good kills!

Riddle Rosehearts
We all know he’d have a hedgehog
So there are many places where hedgehogs are actually illegal, so in that instance, he’d probably like the company of a rabbit.
Now, this isn’t me being biased for my love of rabbits, but hear me out. Rabbits can be very similar to hedgehogs as pets.
Hedgehogs have a specific nutritional diet to adhere to, which can also be said for Rabbits as well. Riddle, being very detail-oriented, would have no trouble accommodating a rabbit’s strict diet. They would need a good balance of healthy greens while also always having a bundle of hay on hand. They can have the occasional strawberry, but not too much!
They both can be quieter pets. Hedgehogs are definitely quieter but rabbits don’t normally make many sounds that come from their tiny bodies. They do, however, tend to chew and scratch at stuff, which can be loud, and when rabbit thumps their hind leg, oof can it be loud! Riddle would appreciate having a quieter roommate so he can focus on his homework or housewarden duties during the day.
Rabbits and Hedgehogs are actually quite active animals. They both need a lot of room to run around and get some exercise. During Riddle’s downtime, he’d enjoy having an active role while interacting with his pet, similar to how he enjoys equestrian as a sport. Equestrian requires trust and cooperation as well as a strong bond with the horse. Since Riddle has a soft spot for sensitive animals, he’d enjoy playing with a cute bundle of energy.
Ace Trappolla
To be honest, I don’t see him seeking an animal companion on his own.
However, I think he’d want to have a pet with extreme intelligence that could be taught different tricks on his free time.
A medium-sized to big-sized dog breed that could be easily trained would be a good fit. Something like a Border Collie or a German Shepard
He’d teach the dog to recognize different cards and incorporate it into his slight of hand tricks so that he can surprise people with some sick card skills. Like, imagine Ace revealing the card you chose was actually in his dog’s mouth!
He would also most likely teach the dog tricks to make his life easier/more conviennent. Like opening doors when his hands are full, or grabbing a drink from the fridge when he’s busy studying playing some kind of game.
Overall he’d enjoy being able to bond with a dog while teaching them many things to do that’ll be incorporated in his daily life. His original intention is to get the dog to do free labor, but in the end, he’d end up loving and coddling the dog to the point where he might end up doing more for the dog than the dog doing something for him.
Deuce Spade
Chickens
Deuce would most likely want some sort of cool looking animal. Actually when I think about it, the appeal of a cool dog riding shotgun in his magic wheel is a high possibility too.
Imagine it: Deuce getting a dog with cute cool googles on inside a passager car for his magic wheel. This dog would totally have a jean vest on too (as a call back to his delinquent days).
Since Deuce is quite athletic, he’d enjoy having a running companion or do some sort of physical activity with the dog. Something like frisbee would be a fun activity with the pup.
Huskies are athletic dogs that aren’t the brightest bulb in the pack, just like our adorable boy. They’re perfect, c’mon
Deuce would enjoy the companionship of a dog as well. Being raised by a single mother while also being a delinquent in the past most likely made him feel quite lonely and an outcast at times. However, even though he’s in a better place, he’d feel relieved to know he has a buddy to play or snuggle with when times get a little rough.
Cater Diamond
My first thought was that Cater would definitely spam Magicam with all sorts of pictures of his pet. So this animal HAS to be photogenic to some degree.
However, I think the it would need to be a cool pet rather than a cute one since his sisters would probably judge it on the cute factor? He already dislikes being around them anyways so he wouldn’t want a cute pet to appease them anyways.
Also I feel like a requirement is an animal that would give him and only him attention that wouldn’t easily be swayed by his sisters. He needs TLC for himself, you know?
Akita’s are a dog breed that would be perfect. They are very loyal and lovable to their owners, but quite aloof to strangers.
While they do tend to be bigger dogs, I can still imagine Cater dressing the dog up in a cool vest and sunglasses while he wears a similar or matching set and posting it on magicam
They’re also an intelligent breed that could probably learn to skateboard along with Cater! Who wouldn’t want a skateboarding pup? Also imagine the wicked picture he could get while skateboarding with his best bud!
Overall an Akita would be a dog to give him the love and attention he needs, while also having a pup who will be able to skateboard and dance with in his spare time.
Trey Clover
Trey, being so reliable, would be able to take care of any animal he wanted, but I feel like he needs a break, you know? Like a low maintenance animal he could enjoy the company of when things get a little chaotic at the Heartslabuyl dorm.
Despite the irony of Floyd calling him Sea Turtle, Trey would probably enjoy having a pet Tortoise.
He can watch his buddy chill and chomp on some veggies or fruit when he winds down for the night. It’s basically a stress reliever, especially when it rushes out of its den super fast for some yummy treats. They say tortoises are slow, but have you seen one go for it’s favorite treats? They can be surprisingly speedy.
He could give his pet any leftover fruit scraps he might not use for his desserts (no waste yay!) while also saving some extra morsels for it to snack on later.
Am I the only one who sees an endearing Trey softly stroking the shell of his pet tortoise with one hand and his other hand propping his head up on his desk while wearing a goofy smile?
Also, am I the only one who can imagine someone making the tortoise a little fedora to match Trey? It’s literally the best.
Even though this tortoise belongs to the smaller variety, can you imagine a giant tortoise just strolling around the dorm? Like it’s already crazy there, and then there’s some random Tortoise in the hallway! Ace would totally put a birthday party hat on it, while Cater snaps a selfie with it while posting it with hastags like #hesrtslabyulmascot #happyunbirthdayfromlittleT or something silly like that. During the day it would just stroll around the winding hallways and later on just chill out in the gardens for some Sun and relaxation.

Mass Effect Trilogy Tag
Lovingly borrowed from a great Mass Effect blog @whiskynorocks ya'll should go follow them they're rad as hell and have excellent taste
Been a fan since: I'd heard great things about the series since 3 came out but I never had the opportunity to play it until this year. I can safely say I'm pretty hooked.
Favorite game of the series: 2, without a doubt. There are things I loved about 1 and 3 but 2 stood out to me especially with the writing and how I developed my relationships with my crew. I wasn't thrilled about joining forces with Space Terrorists, but at least I was able to walk away from TIM at the end of it.
MaleShep or FemShep? FemShep, hands down. I do have a BroShep save, but he's not as...invested as FemShep is.
Earthborn, Colonist or Spacer? Colonist or Earthborn for FemShep, Earthborn or Spacer for BroShep
Paragon or Renegade? Heavy on the Paragade. I usually try to go mostly Paragon, but there are some motherfuckers that need slapping
Biotics or Tech? I like Tech but I go Biotics more often than not
Favorite class: Oh Vanguard full stop. Give me a shotgun and biotic charge and I'm up on the front lines gunning down assholes like I was born for it
Favorite companion: Garrus, but also Tali, Wrex, Legion, Kasumi, Zaeed, Vega, and Liara when she didn't sell my body to terrorists
Least favorite companion: Miranda (strictly just due to ability, tbh), Ashley (I saved her a few times, I get that she has a lot of emotional baggage and the way that the Alliance treats her is extremely wrong, but I just can't like her ya'll. I'm sorry. I've tried.)
My squad selection: Who wants to third wheel with me and the Space Kitty? In all seriousness, it's usually Shep, Garrus, and Tali in 1 unless I switch Tali for Kaiden a few times. Or Wrex if I need more fire power lol. In 2, soon as I get Garrus, I tend to keep him around for everything save Tali's trial since I like to bring Legion to that just to be a troll. Mostly, it's just me and the Dream Team. Vega third wheeled a lot in 3, though lol
Favorite in-game romance: Shakarian for the long haul, baby. But Talibrations is also extremely adorable too. My BroShep is hella bi so he's romancing Kaiden after losing Ash in Virmire and he's Damaged™ so maybe Kaiden can fix him
Other pairings I like: Tali/Reeger (that dude was so in love with her it's amazing), EDI/Joker, Wrex/Bakura, Nyreen/Aria, Cortez/Vega
Favorite NPC: Anderson, Councilor Sparatus because he's a dick but he comes through for you in the end, Saren, Nihlus for the five seconds you get to know him, Kirrahe, Nyreen Kandros, Primarch Victus, Aria (she's very hot), the bartender in the Asari bar, Biotic God Volus, Padok Wikks
Favorite antagonist: SOVEREIGN. Hands down, he is the most terrifying thing you encounter in the games. He's just so other, so alien, and so...mechanical. His lines are delivered with this matter-of-fact contempt that is so perfect for a sentient machine. He has no motive other than he just Is. And I love that. Harbinger never shut up, but Sovereign knew when to start and end a conversation. He said his piece and he said nothing more. And that is exactly how you introduce an Eldritch Being.
Favorite mission: Noveria. I loved meeting Lorik, and how the whole thing spirals down from dirty business deals to all out creep-fest when you encounter the Rachni. And the Rachni Queen's voice acting was stellar. She was just sympathetic enough to warrant pause from outright killing her and terrifying enough to consider it.
Favorite loyalty mission: Its a tie in between Garrus and Kasumi. Garrus for how it ties into his relationship with Shepard and just how their death truly affected him and how it reflects on his character (I have only allowed him to shoot Sidonis once, and it was not a good feeling). And Kasumi because dressing Shepard up is always a good time and Kasumi is a sassy, classy lady who lost someone dear to her and giving her that closure she needs makes me happy for her. She deserves pretty things. She's also cute as hell.
Favorite DLC: Either Citadel, Omega (for Nyreen), or Overlord because David's story made me cry. I'm also autistic and the story was handled very well with Shepard being so furiously angry that the Paragon Interrupt was to pistol whip Gavin was very cathartic for me.
Control, Synthesis or Destroy? 100% Destroy. I do not and will not trust the Walmart-brand Alexa that is the Catalyst. That little asshole is dying with the rest of those genocidal machines.
Favorite weapon: The Talon Heavy Pistol. Baby can pack a punch.
Favorite place: I actually really love the beauty of the Ardat Yakshi monastery. I hate that the Reapers destroy it and turn it into someplace so nightmarish but it really was such a beautiful building and felt really peaceful beforehand.
A quote I like: "You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it."

How to Build a Shotgun Suburban in The Sims 4 Like a Nerd
Tumblr media
The reason this home style is called The Shotgun is because you could theoretically open the front and back doors and shoot a shotgun straight through. Whether anyone has tried this I don't know. They were originally built in the early 1800s, and are primarily found in the New Orleans area, although this incredibly iconic and versatile build is still being constructed and can be found all across the US. If you've played The Sims for more than five minutes you may recognize this as the build style that many of the homes in Willow Creek are supposed to be. I, of course, will go over how to actually build a Shotgun the right way and we will put those EA starters to shame. Ready? Let's build.
I will be focusing on the style of shotgun mostly associated with the later 1800s, although I will be sure to touch on how to build one that looks like it's from the early 1800s and well as from this century. If you're interested in a video version of this tutorial, that can be found here.
Floorplan
The Shotgun homes were a family friendly solution to the plentiful but narrow lots in expanding residential areas. One room wide and several rooms deep, your floorplan will be contained in a rectangle three to six tiles wide and as deep as the lot may allow. Your front door will be placed to the left or right side of the home off a narrow (one to two tile deep) front deck. The original Shotgun homes were more likely to be on a very low or no foundation, and the entry would be straight off the sidewalk. Newer constructions may be built further back on the lot and have a slightly deeper front deck. The front room will be a living room with a fireplace on the center of the inner wall, and that fireplace will be double-sided and also be in the next room back. In a single story build that next room would be a bedroom, although if you expand up it could be turned into a second living space, dining room, or bathroom. The kitchen and dining area will be at the back of the build, and will have another narrow deck off the back leading into a small back yard. If we had a 10x20 or 10x30 lot size that would be more accurate, but we don't, so the yard on this 15x20 lot is a bit wider than would commonly be found IRL. The last thing to address on the main floor is hall or nah. Older homes would have the rooms stacked one on top of the other and have doors running down all one side, so that if they were all opened you could see through all the rooms and out the back. Newer builds tend to have that space be a hallway instead and have doors off the hallway into the individual rooms, which is what I have done here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you are going for super old early 1800s style, the bathroom would often be detached or tacked onto the back. However, with the ability to expand up, adding one to the existing space downstairs and moving all of the bedrooms upstairs becomes an option. Very rarely would you expand to the sides. Of course, this is a video game, and you can do what you want. But by the Nerd Oath (that I just made up) I must tell you the most historically accurate information I can. With that being said, if you really need a lot more space, you can mirror your floors to the left or right and create a Double Barrel Shotgun, and add doors or arches to expand the living spaces.
Tumblr media
You can expand vertically up to three stories, keeping the same footprint and adding the same narrow front and back balconies. If you have High School Years, this would be a great opportunity to use the sneak out windows.
Exterior
This is the easiest roof. Early 1800s shotguns would just have a flat roof, but even the later constructions are simply topped with a gable. Bring it to size, pitch it down a bit, and you're done!
Tumblr media
For siding, go with something bright and painted. Doors and windows will be tall and narrow, which reminds me you could use short or medium wall height for this build. The front and back will have a door and one or two windows spaced evenly, and the sides will have just a few windows. Remember, these were originally on narrow lots, and privacy would be a concern. Some homes didn't even have any windows on the sides, but for fire safety we will be putting windows in the bedrooms today. We can also place bright, moderately ornate, and painted columns, railings, and spandrels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since these homes are placed so close to the front of the lot, there won't be much in the way of landscaping. A few flowering plants, a little terrain paint, and you're good to go.
Tumblr media
Interior
Colorful and family oriented, your interior may be cramped but that's part of the charm... right? Doors will be small to keep as much space available as possible. Go for bright colors, and keep in mind older homes tend to have more paneling, molding, and baseboards than newer or more recently renovated homes. Floors will be wood, although you could add some tiles for bathrooms.
Tumblr media
Since it will be at the very back of an already narrow home, the kitchen will most likely be a line (as shown here). If you move the dining space to the room behind the living room, you could double the kitchen size and make it a galley. Cabinets can be wood for an older feel, or painted for a more updated look.
Tumblr media
Because bathrooms were usually added on later, they are going to be small and possibly in weird spaces. As with most older homes, there will be only one unless you want the build to feel like a newer construction. I haven't figured out the exact bathroom to bedroom ratio of "old" vs "new" homes yet, but it's definitely one of the most noticeable things when you are looking at floorplans and trying to guess how old the home is. How exciting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you want your build to feel more updated, consider the following:
Skip the molding and paneling on the wallpapers, and consider more neutral and in-style colors
Replace multiplane windows with single pane windows
Remove other decorative elements, like spandrels, and simplify railing and columns
Just for fun, I restyled this home a bunch of different ways to highlight how you can take any simple floorplan and customize it to fit into any world with just a few cosmetic changes.
Tumblr media
If you want to check out my Shotgun in more detail, it is on the gallery! My ID is sahmandbean and the lot title is Shotgun Shell.
If you're interested in some reference images or learning more about this style, I recommend starting with my Pinterest board, as I have several images and references.
If you like video tutorials, I have this build and literally dozens of other how-to videos on my YouTube channel.
Tumblr media
Thanks so much for building with me today! Stay creative, and I look forward to building with you again soon.

THANATOS 50 CAL TANK BUSTER BARREL ZIP
THANATOS 50 CAL TANK BUSTER BARREL FREE
Tired of putting in these settings every time? Right click here and select bookmark. Indicates that the achievement also unlocks one or more items. Respectively, they are playing during an event, joining the community group, and purchasing a DLC. Rifleman and stable shot aced, marksman basic. standard barrel, 45 degree red dot, theia magnified scope, and wooden body. Indicate that the achievement has certain restrictions before being unlockable. 50 Cal Sniper Rifle or Galant Rifle Recommended. Indicate that the achievement requires playing on the given difficulty or above. Note that achievements introduced more recently tend to be skewed lower, since there has been less time to unlock them. Indicate the percentage of players on Steam who have unlocked this achievement, with the colour giving an indication of how common it is at a glance.
THANATOS 50 CAL TANK BUSTER BARREL FREE
This guide is a work in progress, so feel free to let me know any mistakes I've made.
THANATOS 50 CAL TANK BUSTER BARREL ZIP
Last Action Villain Perform a headshot kill on enemies using only the R93 sniper rifle while zip lining. The guide includes details of each achievement as well as strategies to unlock them. Unlocks the 'Tank Buster' Barrel for the Thanatos. I don't have much experience with Messiah, but from what I remember the lack of a functioning grace period and Skulldozers refusing to stop firing made it rather inconsistent.Įdit: This is for Solo without bots, using bots solves a lot of ammo problems.Welcome! This guide aims to document every achievement available in the game Payday 2 by Overkill Software. Jokers are really good now, better to have at least Partners in crime on every build.įar away aced might be better than Underdog aced + Shotgun impact after the recent damage dropoff update. Frenzy + Beserker + Overkill is enough for the Loco to onehot heavies, but you would have to give up on the regen for that. I don't know what you could mean by that, so I just put on some health regen on the first two builds. States Air Force M134 A2 Vulcan machine gun M134-A2 electric, Airsoft Gatling Gun with 6 barrels. Since the shotgun kills gave health back and regenerated it back super insanely that it was able to solo death wish. Jack of all trades gives half of a secondary deployable, definitely needed since the increase in spawn rates and the recent damage dropoff leave the Loco with less playing room when it comes to ammo. Having more than 3 shaped charges isn't all that useful on most heists except Hoxton Breakout (on day 2 you can use the keycards instead) or the Transport heists (but we don't count these because 6 aren't enough either). This kind of build could be quite terrible on a lot of maps now. Please note that I haven't gotten much of a chance to test the recent damage dropoff changes for shotguns. Much appreciated if someone can help to rebuild this who knows actually something about building the builds!

On genres, part 1.
The “problem” with a lot of tutorials for 2D games is that they tend to focus on things like platformers or top-down shooters. I say problem because it’s more of a me problem. For most people, this is fine.
But as anyone with ADHD will tell you, it can be quite difficult to motivate yourself to do things that you aren’t interested in.
My favorite genres are visual novels, dating sims, management games, and Harvest Moon-likes. I also love horror games and falling block puzzle games. Generally, I love things that are heavier on story and art than gameplay - games that allow you to set your own pace, for the most part. I also love games that have a lot of tedious little optional things you can do.
Tumblr media
(Except the falling block games, e.g. Tetris. That’s, like, a weird exception.)
That’s not to say I’m unwilling or unable to play more fast-paced games. I’ve logged countless hours into Dead By Daylight, various shooters and Diablos, and enjoyed them. But these aren’t really the games I’m interested in creating.
To get a little personal for a second...
Alienated
Growing up, I felt very discouraged from anything that seemed like a more fast-paced or “action” title, like FPSes, or even things like Ocarina of Time. These games were treated as “for boys” back in the day (and to some extent still are - see Geguri, Annemunition, etc).
I am nonbinary, but growing up I was largely under the impression I was a girl, and internalized quite a lot of this for many years.
I’m sure there are going to be some folks reading this who are like, That’s stupid, don’t listen and just do it anyway, who lets what someone else thinks dictate what you play? And I get it. If it were voluntary, yeah, obviously I’d have chosen not to be bothered.
But when it’s a LOT of messages, and you’re THAT young, it really roots itself into you. And it’s not as if I had a lot of dissenting voices.
For a while, I saw my difficulties with these games as some sort of immutable biological truth, rather than the reasonable conclusion that you can’t be good at something you haven’t learned. A lot of girls are made to feel this way with STEM, as well. “Women can’t do math” and whatnot.
Remember how I said I see a lot of people that feel like coding is simply impossible for them? A lot of them are women!
Getting older
Once I got into my teens and twenties, I made myself play these games and found joy in them, to prove to myself that I was capable of both liking them and becoming good at them. But I’ve found that a lot of my interests - in many things, not just games - are, for better or for worse, still broadly influenced by what I was exposed to when I was fairly young.
In other words, while I definitely enjoy shooting zombies with shotguns or whatever, there is a part of my brain that goes absolutely fucking feral over things like Princess Maker 2, Harvest Moon, etc. because those are what I put hundreds of hours into when I was a child. Those are the games where I abandon all reason and spend hours drowning myself in them.
Tumblr media
Little did I know when I was 9 years old and received a strange file from a friend over MSN Messenger named PM2.EXE that it would affect my life so profoundly!
You might be wondering why the hell I’d have latched onto dating sims and visual novels as a formative genre, being a child. Well... you can thank shitty Newgrounds dating sims for that. Yes, the porn ones. I was a weird kid. I didn’t have any interest in the porn - I was like, 10 - I just wanted to talk to the characters and raise the stats.
I also had a strange fascination with visual novels despite not having any to play, and spent a lot of time looking at their CGs. I remember going through J-List (a site that sells various Japanese products, including games) when I was around that same age, just looking at all the thumbnails for these mysterious Japanese games. I found a pack of Kanon CGs and went through them again and again despite not having any context for the visuals.
Tumblr media
Again, I was a weird kid.
I playfully refer to all of this as “my brain being broken in a certain way”. For better or for worse, my brain magnetizes to these sorts of things.
Fortunately or unfortunately, I’m old enough now to understand that some of the things that were formative parts of my childhood are, regretfully, fucking creepy. Princess Maker 2 is a very cute game on the surface that was great for a kid like me, but it has some nasty stuff in there (like making your underage daughter work at a cabaret, or even the opportunity to marry her). Most of it can be easily avoided, but it’s still upsetting that it exists. And visual novels have a huge problem with misogyny, and sexual assault, and characters that are Legally 18 But Holy Shit They Look Like Kids.
I don’t have any illusions that American media is free from the same problem, mind, or that ALL visual novels/adjacent genres are this way. But it’s a stain on the genre. And it heavily informs the kind of game I want to make - namely, that I want it to take inspiration from the good parts of my childhood, while firmly avoiding Any Creepy Shit.
Which brings me to the kind of game I’d actually like to make. And that’s for the next post!

Oblivius Chapter 5

Masterlist Series Masterlist Part 4 Part 6 Playlist
---------------------
Age 18:
His truck was full.
He was driving, you were shotgun - like always - and there were three more friends in the back. The trunk held boogie boards and towels, sunscreen and a cooler full of food and drinks.
You got there early enough that you found a good spot and within half an hour you were completely set up. There were three big beach blankets spread out with two big umbrellas to hide under when the sun got too hot.
“Spills, can you get my back?” He was handing you the sunscreen as he pulled his shirt up.
You were momentarily taken aback, you’d known him for so long, this wasn’t your first beach trip but he looked… good.
You spent a little longer than you should have making sure every inch of the golden skin of his back and shoulders was covered in sunscreen. Making sure to dip your hands just under the band of his swim trunks. When he turned he had a big smile and you had to ignore the way your stomach flipped.
Get a grip, it’s just Francis.
You couldn’t get a grip though, not with the way butterflies swarmed in your stomach whenever you paid attention to him. His hair was growing out a bit, curling slightly at the edges. You’d never thought about him this way and you had to keep reminding yourself to look away.
Later on in the day when you were in the water you played the same games you’d played since you were kids and when you jumped on his back he didn’t push you away; his skin warm from the sun. Instead he let you wrap your legs around him and everything felt right.
“You okay back there?” He laughed as he held onto the back of your knees.
“Peachy.” You smiled as you held on.
-------------------------------
**Present Day**
“Hola Mijo, you better go in there and calm her down.” His mom greeted him at the door when he walked in, her eyebrows raised at him.
“Hola mami, what happened?” He kissed her on the cheek like he always did before making his way further into the house. She couldn’t say - just that Claudia was upset. He was walking towards her, but his mind was still back with Spills. He could still smell her hair as he made his way into the den.
It’s the same shampoo, she still uses the same shampoo. Focus Francisco.
Claudia was almost shouting into her cellphone.
“Well I need it here sooner than that. My wedding is in three weeks and I need everything to be perfect - so I don’t give a shit what you have to do to get my dress here in time but you better find a way to do it!” She was looking daggers at him and he let her finish the phone call before he spoke.
“What’s going on babe?” He put his hands on her arms and started trying to calm her but she shrugged out of his grasp.
“What’s wrong Francisco, is that I told you this would be difficult.” She wasn’t yelling but her tone was icy. “How am I supposed to get married without a wedding dress. Would have been fine if we were back home.”
Not this again.
“Claudia, I told you when we got engaged that I wanted to get married here and you agreed. I explained to you very clearly that I’ve been away from my home, my life, my family - my friends for years and I wanted to get married here. Now tell me what the problem is.” He wanted his feelings to be clear. He loved Claudia, he really did. She was sweet and beautiful and she treated him well. She could be a little spoiled though and if he didn’t put his foot down now, he’d never have a choice about anything ever again.
He would not live his life that way.
“Yes I know I agreed, and for the most part I’m okay with it. I know your whole life is here, but it would have been so easy to get married there.” She pouted and it didn’t invoke the feeling it should have. It didn’t spur him to try to please her, it annoyed him.
He momentarily thought about when Spills pouted up at him, it never annoyed him. He pushed the thought away.
“Maybe, but we’re not getting married there. We’re getting married here, now what can we do? Let's look for a solution.” He softened up at her a little bit, after all he wanted her to be happy.
She sighed loudly and put her arms around his neck, her voice got a little higher as she tried to appeal to him.
“Frankie, baby- I just want everything to be perfect.”
That doesn’t work on me.
“Let’s just try to have everything go smoothly. It’ll be our day regardless, right?” He put his hands on her waist to bring her close, trying to get her out of her head.
“How long do we have to stay here Francisco?” She leaned back to look up into his face and he sighed.
“We have to talk about that, after the wedding we’re going back to stay with your family for a little while but then we have to talk about where we’re going to live.” He held her, but she pulled away.
“I don’t want to live here after Francisco. I appreciate that you grew up here and everything and we can visit but I do not want to live here.” She crossed her arms petulantly, and he took a deep breath to steady himself. They’d spoken about this before and she had agreed to give it an honest try, but they’d been in town less than a week and already she was telling him she hated it.
“You can’t know that in three days babe.” He sat on the couch.
When they agreed to get married - he’d been scared of this, he’d been scared that she’d do this. He knew she loved him, and he loved her - as much as he could - but the look on her face when he’d put his foot down about spending this time at home should have told him everything.
She didn’t say anything, she sat with him and reluctantly agreed.
“You’re right, I’m sorry. I just miss home. I’ll give it another shot.” She sounded genuine and he wanted to believe that. “How was your night with Spills? Is she feeling better?” She smiled at him, putting her hand on his thigh and he placed his over hers. A silent truce.
“She’s doing much better, we ate dinner and watched a movie.” He held her hand as he spoke and she smiled at him.
“I’m glad to hear that - hopefully she doesn’t get that drunk at the wedding.” She laughed lightly.
He knew she didn’t mean it in a nasty way, but he bristled at her words.
“She was just nervous about meeting all of you, and even if she did it would be fine. Everyone gets drunk at weddings.” He tried not to sound defensive but she raised her eyebrows at him. “I just don’t want you to think that she’s a mess. She’s like a-” He couldn’t say sister, he’s never thought of her as a sister. She was so much more. “She’s just really important to me.”
“I know babe. I didn’t mean it like that, she seems sweet.” She smiled at him. She was still trying to get back in his good graces, taking his defensiveness as residual anger. Thankfully.
“We should plan something for all of us to do together. It could give us more time to bond.” He thought about it momentarily then agreed, he knew exactly what to plan.
------------
There was something playing on the TV, you caught vague flashes - people talking but you weren’t taking anything in. Your sweatshirt smelled like Frankie and all you wanted was to cuddle up to him. He had been so sturdy beside you, so strong and comfortable.
What the fuck is a wedding emergency?
The mature - adult part of your brain said she was a nice person and if Frankie was with her it was for a reason. Obviously he was happy with her or he wouldn’t be marrying her. Frankie had never been the kind of person to settle.
The other part of your brain, the jealous possessive part told you she was a bitch. She was ruining the life you’d planned out with Frankie. If he’d never met her you’d be together now, laughing and planning the rest of your lives together. He’d be in your bed, or you’d be in his.
[Francis]: Hey Spills, we’re planning a get together for the wedding party - day after tomorrow - beach day. I’ll be there to pick you up at 7am.
It was like the universe was testing you. How many memories could he taint with Claudia?
[you]: sounds good, Claudia, you, me and who else in rustbucket?
[Francis]: Just you and I, and don’t call her that. Claudia’s family is coming so she’s going to ride to the beach with them. I’ll grab coffee on the way. =)
[you]: Hope you have a new tape in there, if I have to listen to queen I’ll jump out of the car
[Francis]: lol a ride is a ride Spills, see you then
[Francis]: was really nice hanging out with you today btw, goodnight
[you]: I had a great time with you - like always, thanks again for all the food, goodnight Francis!
--------
It was easy to ignore everything when you were getting work done, you had taken off a few days when you knew Francis would be home and you were taking advantage of it. The day before your beach trip was used to do all those little tasks you tended to put off.
Your laundry was done, the kitchen was clean, even the fridge had gotten a bit of elbow grease. Everything was ready and packed for the trip.
You tried not to think about the ride to the beach with Francis, you tried not to think back to your previous trips to the beach with him. Those memories were so precious and thinking about how your next memory would be with him, and his new in-laws was tearing you up inside.
Please let this go well, please don’t let me make a fool of myself.
You hoped someone was listening.
The anxiety didn’t let you sleep and you watched the clock crawl closer to morning; it seemed pointless to lay there.
Might as well get ready.
-----
He wasn’t nervous, but he wasn’t excited.
He made his way over to her house, stopping to grab coffee on the way. He thought about his conversation with Claudia, about the possibility of leaving this place. He really didn’t want to. He wanted to be close to his mom, he wanted to be close to his friends and his home.
I want to be close to Spills, I want to see her everyday.
He scolded himself, he was going to marry someone else. He kept trying to remind himself, but when he saw her walking towards his car it all went out the window.
God Spills, you’re killing me.
She put her beach bag and a small cooler in the backseat and got into his truck with a big smile, pushing all other thoughts out of his mind. He handed her the coffee he bought and she took it gratefully, brushing against his fingers, even now - she affected him so much.
Snap out of it Francisco, you aren’t a teenager anymore. This is your friend.
“Hazelnut?” She asked as she smelled the steam floating around her pretty face.
“Of course.” He pulled away from her place, making his way towards the highway. It would be an hour or so until they got to the beach.
“Open up.” The buttery bagel half she put into his mouth as he drove tasted better than he remembered.
------
The drive was over much too soon.
If only it had lasted all day - catching him up on all the gossip he’d missed out on while away. Watching his excitement when he talked about flying, you could have listened to him talk forever.
“Finally!” Cheers rang out when the two of you arrived. The boys had set up a bunch of blankets and umbrellas and you suddenly remembered the state you’d been in the last time they saw you and you felt the blush creeping up.
Benny smiled big when he saw you, tapping the place beside him after you’d all said your hellos. You had no reason to deny him so you sat, setting up all your stuff within the space he made for you.
Blessedly, Claudia hadn’t arrived yet and you cherished this time without her, maybe it was mean - maybe it was selfish but you couldn't help it.
“Hey - Thanks for the other night, for getting me home and making sure I was okay.” Pope set up his stuff on the other side of you.
“No problem, glad to see you feeling better.” He was talking to you but you noticed him give Benny a curious look. Benny ignored it. You watched as Will and Frankie set up a volleyball net, you studied both men and there was no denying that Will was gorgeous; but your eyes were drawn to Frankie. You couldn’t help it, your eyes raked over him greedily.
He was so broad, stronger than he had been in his teen years and his belly had gotten a little softer with age but it suited him. He was gorgeous, he had always been gorgeous. He felt your eyes on him then and he smiled at you, walking over to you with the sunscreen in his hands like he always did. His smile faltered slightly when his gaze landed behind your place in the sand.
“Hey babe, how was the drive?” Claudia and her family had arrived and they were setting up just behind you.
Do you have some sort of alarm? How are you always ruining every single goddamn moment?
“It was hectic! Left a little later than I meant to but we survived.” She was breathless as she came to greet him. You busied yourself with something, anything in your bag to avoid watching them kiss. When you looked back she was squeezing sunscreen onto his back, rubbing the lotion much the same way you used to whenever you’d come to the beach together.
He didn’t meet your eyes when she did it, and you were thankful. You didn’t think you could handle seeing him enjoying her touch so much. Instead you focused on the people around you. You focused on Benny and Will and Pope, trying your best to ingratiate yourself to them. Hopefully erase the memory of you as a belligerent mess.
---
As the day went on you found that you liked these guys, not just as an extension of Francis - but because they were fun. They made you laugh, they spoke to you like they’d known you your whole life. They almost distracted you enough. You also noticed that Claudia was only here to lounge in the sun. She had absolutely no interest in getting in the water, no matter how many times she was asked by Frankie to join him.
He played it off like it didn’t bother him but you knew it did, and that in turn hurt you but your heart leapt when he turned to you.
“Spills, wanna come in the water with me?” He smiled and held out his hand and you gladly accepted. Following him in like you always had.
“Not much of a swimmer?” You couldn’t help but ask when the two of you were in the water.
“Not really, it’s a shame - the water's perfect today.” He floated, making sure to splash you and you waited until he was perfectly relaxed to splash him back. “God I love it here.” he spoke as he floated closer and closer.
“Me too. I want to live near the ocean one day.” You spoke absentmindedly, trying to feel for little shells or rocks as you walked further and further from the shore. He followed you.
You felt him splashing you from behind and you tackled him. The two of you turned into children in the water and it ended with you wrapped around his back like always. His hands on the back of your knees as you held on. You both watched the shore in silence, everyone too focused on whatever they were doing to notice your closeness and you were thankful for it. It made you hold on tighter, trying to get closer and he wrapped your legs around his tummy.
Maybe it was inappropriate, maybe if Claudia had been watching she would have had some words for him, or you, or both of you - but it didn’t stop you.
“Let’s just stay out here Spills. Let’s stay in the water forever.” He stroked the skin of your shins under the water and it was so hard not to cry right then and there. “Just you and me, living in the water.” He laughed but it came out sad.
“I’m game.” You rested your chin on his shoulder briefly and he bumped your head with his. This one little moment made the whole day worth it, and when he pulled away as you knew he would, your heart broke just a little bit more.
You were both wrong in your assumptions however. The moment you had thought was private, that you thought you’d stolen without anyone knowing had been seen and catalogued by someone on the shore. Pope had seen the whole thing, and he had some words for Francis.

You know, I kind of like how, in Metroid Fusion, Samus looks kind of hunched over in her gameplay sprites. It’s a subtle detail, but it does a good job of conveying less of an action movie protagonist vibe (akin to most Metroid games) and more like a horror movie protagonist. This fits really well, because playing Fusion tends to feel a lot like a horror movie than anything else.
I’ve also heard a YouTube channel (Video Game Animation Studies, they make great content) describe Samus as holding her arm cannon like a shotgun in this game, which for some reason also feels like it fits with the horror film aesthetic.
I watched that video too :D
I'm also impressed by how faitful the SA-X looks like to Samus' SM model and animation, down to the style of the Screw Attack. It suggests that, after being infected, Samus really started to move in a different way. The Fusion Suit might be lighter, but Samus is still hunched over, and she looks a little more worried.
(it's the same thing in Zero Mission, and while it could be purely an artistic decision, it's also her first mission, so it's easy to think she wasn't as confident as she'll become by SM)
Admittedly I never understood why she would hold her arm cannon from above, it looks rather uncomfortable to me, but I don't think it's a coincidence that in Fusion she holds it from beneath to support its weight. Maybe, now that her Suit is lighter, she has to put more of her strength into holding it up.
