Calm Before the Storm
Summary: Ada was invited to spend some time in a seaside cottage, and she hoped Hecate would join her.
4,050 words
When Ada Cackle was promoted and appointed a headmistress after her mother retired, Ada received letters of congratulations from many other headmistresses across the country. She intended to write back to everyone to remain in good relations with other headteachers. One of the letters was delivered in a tightly packed envelope, to the point that Ada struggled to take the letter out of it. The envelope ripped enough for Ada to pull out a letter similar to the other ones, but apart from that there was a folded card inside.
She opened the card to read the inscription. "We are happy to invite Miss Ada Cackle for a summer holiday week at our cottage by the sea. The cottage in the Thistle Village is a perfect destination for quiet holidays and is only three hours by broom from your Academy. The invitation is for two adult witching persons and requires written confirmation."
At first Ada wanted to decline the invitation, partially because it felt like she was receiving an award for becoming the headmistress even though her new term hadn't even started, and feared that she would not meet the expectations, and thus the reward would feel like she didn't deserve it; and partially, because she was going to spend her summer with Miss Hardbroom, who was going to stay in the castle with her for the whole summer. She put the invitation away with the other letters to respond later, as she couldn't bring herself to simply decline.
She was sure the invitation was a nice gesture and she didn't want to make the witch who sent it think she wasn't grateful. But it wasn't entirely truthful. She didn't want to upset the witch, but she also couldn't stop thinking about the cottage by the sea, the calm of the beach in the morning and late night, the sound of waves crashing against the shoreline, the smell of the sea and the feel of humidity in the air. She wouldn’t have to worry about it if she could simply convince Miss Hardbroom to go with her. Unfortunately, there was a risk she would be met with rejection. Surely the deputy had already made plans and wouldn't want to travel alone with Ada, and not to the seaside, as Hecate didn’t care much for the beach. Maybe Ada wasn't supposed to go for a holiday after all. She was hoping to forget about the invitation for a while as she went to the library for some light reading material.
In the library, was Miss Hardbroom, who was meticulously checking that every book lent to the girls during the term was on the shelf and she didn't have to send a letter to any of the parents asking to return it. This was usually the job of the previous deputy headmistress, who was Ada, however with the latest promotion there were more pressing matter she had to attend, and Alma Cackle's rather sudden retirement didn't leave a lot of time for Hecate to catch up with her new responsibilities.
Thankfully for Hecate, everything so far looked orderly enough, with some of the books only being returned to the wrong spot, but not missing. Perhaps, after all, Miss Cackle did find the time to attend to this duty. Perhaps Hecate was anxious about her new position and wanted to familiarise herself with all aspects of her new role, including all the paperwork she would have to fill next term and didn't want to simply learn on the go, as she didn't want to make any mistakes.
"Am I interrupting you?" Miss Cackle's voice said in a half whisper. She always had respect for the books and so she kept her voice quiet, even though there was nobody else in there but the two of them.
"Not at all, I was just about to put the files away." She replied instantly and did as she said, putting the folder in the drawer and locking it with a spell.
"I came here to find a distraction but I don't want to ruin the work you just did." She said, hinting at wanting to find a book.
"It would not be a problem. I trust you would return the book in a timely manner." There was a slight smile on Miss Hardbroom's lips, which Ada returned.
"I was trying to take my mind off of something but maybe I could talk to you about it instead, if you don't have anything else awaiting your attention." Ada said and suddenly felt silly for asking her deputy for a chat. But Hecate didn't seem to mind.
"Would you like to discuss it here or somewhere more suited for a conversation?"
"Let's go to my office, then." It had only been Ada's office for a day, but she knew it like the back of her hand, having been the daughter of a previous headmistress, then working there as a teacher when she completed her teaching college degree, and then a deputy for the last few years.
In the office there was a slight change, a pair of soft armchairs and a coffee table in place of hard wooden chairs for the previous Miss Cackle's office's guests. Ada received the gift from her mother, who heard Ada mention it a couple of times in the passing. Alma wanted to make sure the office was Ada's and not hers anymore, and that she could do anything with it within reason.
"Please, sit down." Ada gestured to one of the armchairs as she turned to the counter where tea was brewing. She put the teapot and teacups on a tray and brought to the table. "Don't be alarmed, dear. It's not a very serious matter." It did the exact opposite to Hecate, who wasn't worried before when Ada asked her for a chat. Ada sat down in the other chair and started pouring tea. "Miss Opal from the Opal Academy invited me to spend a week in a seaside cottage and I don't have a clue about what I should do.”
Hecate stilled, the teacup she was bringing to her lips didn't quite reach them. Ada was going away, after she told Hecate she would stay in the castle with her. But Hecate didn't have any business to become upset as Ada was free to do as she pleased. "You're going to accept it, are you not?"
There was a small sigh on Ada's part. "I wanted to decline at first, I don't know how I feel about leaving for a holiday just after I was appointed headmistress." Hecate raised her eyebrow. "The more I think about it, the more appealing it sounds. I don't travel that often and I might not have an opportunity like this any soon."
Hecate twisted her lips into a small smile. "You should go." Ada smiled back, but her smile didn't reach her eyes. She was looking at Hecate a little longer than it would seem polite, almost as if she was trying to say something. "What is it?" Ada made a subtle gesture with her fingers and the card appeared right before Hecate.
Hecate read it one or two times before Ada spoke again. "It's an invitation for two. I understand if you have other plans or simply don't wish to, but I was wondering if you wanted to go with me." Ada said in one breath, her toes curled as she awaited her response.
Hecate put her teacup back on the table and looked down. "I don't know if I would be good company."
Ada was a bit taken aback by this. "I enjoy spending time with you, Hecate, and I would be delighted if you chose to do this with me. Unless you'd rather stay here." I don't know if it would be worth doing without you, she wanted to say but kept that part to herself.
Hecate felt warmth coming from Ada's words. She pondered the question for a moment, but she didn't want to keep Ada waiting for too long. "Very well. When are we departing?" Ada beamed at her. She wanted to lounge at Hecate and wrap her arms around her but instead curled her hands into fists in excitement.
Ada didn't want to appear at the doorstep of the cottage unexpectedly. She sent a letter back to Miss Opal, confirming she was going to accept the invitation. It gave both her and Hecate some time to prepare for the journey. Ada packed her summer clothes along with some sweaters for cooler days, and made a note to pick up her sunhat on the way out. Hecate struggled with choosing what to put in her bag, as she wasn't sure if she had anything appropriate for the beach. She found some clothes that were the lightest by her standard, and hoped for the best. The morning of their flight, they met in Ada's office for a cup of tea, discussing some last minute details. "It would be prudent to check the weather." It was mentioned at some point, but clear skies indicated nothing would stand in their way. When Hecate left to finish packing, Ada took the last sip of her tea. She put the cup away, not planning on reading the leaves. It should be fine, she thought.
The broomstick flight took about as long as the invitation stated, with a minor delay at the very end. The wind was picking up and pushing the witches away, making it harder to fly in a straight line. "What should we do?" Hecate asked, but the wind was making it impossible for Ada to hear anything. She could only assume what Hecate was asking and pointed with the tip of her broomstick, indicating they were going to continue their flight.
When they finally arrived, they were flushed and were gasping for air. "At least we were close." Ada murmured. She looked away and grimaced, feeling guilty for making Hecate go through the last part of the flight.
"I've flown in worse weather." Hecate tried to sound reassuring. It wasn't difficult to spot the cottage once they landed.
They walked to the front door and found a little note. It was a simple welcome note, which transfigured itself into a key as soon as Ada picked it up. She didn't mind having to converse with other people, but she was grateful the other headmistress opted for a simple transforming spell. Ada unlocked the door and looked back at Hecate with a smile. "Shall we?" Hecate returned the smile and followed Ada into the cottage.
They suspected it would be a small sized and cozy cottage, which sounded like something they would enjoy. They put their broomsticks into the stand at the entrance, along with their outer robes they always put on for a flight. There was a table by the window, a narrow sofa and with bookshelves beside it, and on the opposite wall there was a small but practical kitchen area. There were two sets of doors on the other side. "I can't wait to sprawl on the bed." Ada said tiredly. She opened one of the doors and entered a bedroom.
Hecate stayed a little behind. She examined the cottage once more before trying the remaining door. She took a confident step forward before suddenly stopping in her tracks, which made her drop her bag with a thud. Ada could hear the commotion from her bedroom and rushed in to make sure Hecate was alright.
Hecate turned to face Ada, and the two witches looked at each other for a moment with no words. There was no other bedroom in the house, and they were standing in the bathroom. "I think there's been a misunderstanding." Hecate said with tension in her voice. "I was convinced it was an invitation for two adult witches, was it not?" Ada nodded and frowned. Surely she hadn't made a mistake.
Ada walked out of the bathroom and into her bedroom, and Hecate followed. Ada opened her bag and pulled out the invitation from its compartment. She brought it to Hecate, and they studied it together. "Two adult witching persons." It read, and they looked at each other again.
"It would seem that Miss Opal sent an invitation for a witching couple." Hecate stated, not willing to accept what was happening. As much as she would have loved to stay that close to Ada, she couldn’t allow herself hope for something that she was sure would never happen. "How far is Miss Opal's Academy?" She asked, and Ada tried to remember the map she studied before the flight.
"We should be able to reach it in less than half hour. Hopefully she can provide us with an alternate accommodation." Ada said regretfully. "I'm sorry, Hecate. I didn't think to ask and it had appeared to be straightforward." Ada waved the card as she spoke.
Hecate noticed how little daylight was left in the cottage."There's no need to be sorry. We should get out bags and go before it gets dark."
Ada nodded. Hecate was acting quickly, not dwelling on the mistake. It only added to Ada's guilt, who was already beating herself over the holiday fiasco. Hecate's reaction was only making it seem that she was relieved she didn't have to share a room with her. Or bed, even, but Ada wasn't willing to think that far. It wouldn't do her any good.
They collected their broomsticks started to head out. The second Ada turned the doorknob, the wind pushed the door against her making her lose balance. The whistle of wind and the downpour of rain were the only thing that could be heard. Ada braced herself not to fall back and grabbed the door to close it. She pushed it with her shoulder. Hecate joined her, seeing that she struggled. Once the door was closed, Ada slumped against the door. "Well, we cannot go in this weather."
Hecate walked towards the window, which didn't offer any better view than the one she saw through the open door. In fact it was worse, as she could see dark heavy clouds bursting with rain and lightning. She counted in her head. There were fifteen seconds before she could hear a thunder. She looked back, her eyes found Ada at the sofa. She appeared to be full of resignation. Seeing Ada's face made Hecate determined to complete their original plan. "Ada," she said with conviction. "I'll go and find Miss Opal. The storm shouldn't last very long."
Ada turned to Hecate sharply. "It's too dangerous. I understand if you hate the idea of sharing the bedroom with me, but it's not worth it. We should wait and go after it stops.”
"If that's how you feel then that's more the reason for me to go." Hecate didn't stop to think before she picked up her broom and walked out of the cottage, shutting the door with her magic.
Ada put her face in her hands. How did she mess up this badly? She didn't think she said anything wrong. She was only being considerate about their shared space, especially with how she knew Hecate appreciated her privacy. She wanted to follow Hecate, but before she could make up her mind, there was a bang against the door.
She opened it hesitantly, only to see a thoroughly soaked by the rain Hecate. "May I come in?" She barely managed to ask before Ada pulled her inside. She shut the door behind them and took Hecate's broomstick from her ice cold hands to put it in the stand.
Hecate’s dress clung to her body like second skin, her bun was half undone with stray hairs plastered to her face, and her mascara was smudged around her eyes. Her lips were tightly closed, her eyes blinking rapidly to keep the rainwater away. Ada summoned a towel, which she assumed came from the bathroom closet. “You should go and change before you catch a cold." She handed the towel to a shaking Hecate. Feeling defeated, Hecate accepted the towel and trudged into the bathroom, making wet noise with her shoes.
Ada could hear Hecate struggle taking her clothes off, and decided to make some tea. She easily spotted the kettle and some herbal mixes. When tea was ready, Ada cast a spell to clean the wet tracks off the floor. Several minutes later, Hecate emerged from the bathroom. She was wearing a bathrobe and indoor shoes rather than her usual boots. Her hair was undone and loose around her shoulders, still wet and dripping on the floor. Her face was bare of any makeup. She looked around to find Ada by the counter.
"I made us some tea." Ada stated, as Hecate didn't make any move. The embarrassment was making her unsure how she should proceed, but Ada's voice sounded as warm as ever. She sat down at the table. Ada brought them some tea before sitting down beside her.
Hecate wrapped her hands around the teacup to warm them. It made Ada realise that Hecate was still shivering from the cold. She wanted to reach out to her and hold her hands for warmth, but she didn’t want to overstep. The silence between them was louder than the storm outside. Ada wanted to tell Hecate how dangerous it was to attempt to fly in the storm, how worried she was in those few minutes she was gone. She wanted to ask what made her leave in the first place. Hecate, on the other hand, was trying to figure out how to say anything to her, after her abrupt exit and dramatic entrance. She felt embarrassment about leaving in the storm knowing how little thought she put into it, bursting out of the door.
“I can attempt to sleep on the sofa, if that’s alright with you.” Hecate finally cut the silence. “Since none of us are getting out of here.” She didn’t have any intention to sound bitter, but the way she said it made Ada feel uneasy.
“I’m sorry my words made you leave earlier. I was worried you would be uncomfortable with the fact that we only had one bed between us. I know how much you value privacy and I thought you might not want to share a bed with me. Especially because I invited you to come here with me.”
Hecate swallowed hard. She knew she reacted irrationally but what she heard from Ada earlier and what her mind twisted it into were two different things. Her own insecurities got the best of her and she made a fool of herself. But there she was, sharing a pot of tea with Ada. She wanted to share a bed with her, especially because Ada invited her. “I apologise for leaving so suddenly. I wasn’t thinking.” She recalled how regretful Ada look right before she left. “I thought your distress was caused by my presence.”
“I don’t think I would have ended up coming here without you.” Ada admitted truthfully. Hecate opened her eyes wide in surprise. “I’m pleased to be here with you, Hecate. Although you gave me quite a fright running into the roaring storm.” Hecate opened her mouth to apologise but Ada put her hand on Hecate’s forearm.
Hecate could feel her warmth, as if Ada put a blanket of it around Hecate. She was no longer shaking. Whether it was a spell Ada cast, or Ada’s touch made her body react in that way, Hecate wasn’t sure. “Well, I better get comfortable on the sofa then, since we’re going to stay here for a few days.” She interrupted her own train of thought.
Ada tutted. “Hecate, if that’s alright with you, we could both sleep in the bedroom.” Hecate’s confusion was visible on her face. “As noble as your offer is, I don’t think any of us could sleep on it comfortably, not without magic which I’m sure you have as little now as I do.”
Seeing sense in Ada’s words, Hecate simply nodded. She had just been invited to share a bed with Ada Cackle, her best friend and confidante. She would be very proper about it and she would not curl her body around Ada at night if she could help it. The longer she thought about it, the more concerned Ada was. She could see Ada’s left eyebrow lifting, bringing her back from her mind. She shook her head lightly. “In that case, I better unpack.”
Ada smiled lightly. In all this, she forgot to unpack her own bag, but unlike the orderly and organised Hecate, Ada usually resorted to pulling her clothes straight out of the bag, no matter how long she was travelling for. She did, however, realise that her sunhat was left in her closet at Cackle’s. She wouldn’t need it in this weather anyway.
They lost track of time ever since they first entered the cottage. It wasn’t very late but the storm clouds hanging over the seaside village were making it appear later than it was. They were also tired from their trip and they were about to head to the bedroom. Having already changed, Hecate was one step ahead. “And I need to get ready for bed.” Ada added as they both headed to the bedroom.
Hecate opened the closet and started putting her sensible dresses on hangers, while Ada rummaged through her bag to find nightwear. She looked back to see Hecate watching her, knowing she must have been thinking about how much more efficient it is to unpack. Hecate just smiled, knowing Ada had done it many times before and will do it just the same in the future. Ada went to the bathroom to change and Hecate sat on the edge of the bed.
Hecate waited for Ada to get in bed, as she didn’t want to presume to know which side Ada preferred, which was definitely left and Hecate had that information filed for later when she visited Ada when she was sick one time. Ada didn’t take long in the bathroom and she came into the bedroom with a nervous smile on her face. She was wearing a periwinkle sleeveless nightdress reaching her knees, as opposed to the long-sleeved ankle length she wore in the castle. Hecate did all in her power not to stare at her, or not to think too much about how lovely it looked on Ada, or how sun-kissed her shoulders were and beautifully contrasted with the light colour of the dress.
Ada went for the left side of the bed, just as Hecate predicted, pulled down the sheets enough to get in and sat down. Hecate was still wearing her usual black nightgown, and she had to get up to hang it with her other clothes. Underneath was an emerald silk dress, similar length as the one Ada wore. Ada’s breath was taken away, and she tried to appear unbothered. She stretched to try and appear natural. Perhaps Ada pushed her worried down too far and didn’t account for the fact that her beautiful friend was going to sleep in the same bed as she was, with bare arms and shoulders, and a hint of cleavage. Her friend that she didn’t harbour any hidden feelings for. Or did she?
Hecate joined Ada on the bed, hair half dry and wavy. Ada’s mind kept going between Hecate’s hair and dress that was perfect against her complexion. “I hope the weather isn’t as awful tomorrow.” She finally said, before she said something inappropriate.
“That would be preferable. Goodnight, Ada.” Hecate said with content. She lay down flat on her back, to minimise the chance of rolling towards Ada at night, and pulled the covers up. Her hair was splayed around her and she reached out from under the sheets to pull it away from her face.
“Goodnight, Hecate. I’m glad you’re here with me.” Ada replied as she leaned down to put her spectacles on the nightstand. With the last waves of her magic, she switched off the lights and lay down the same way as Hecate did, before turning on her side towards the middle, as she usually slept in her own bed.
As soon as they were asleep, their bodies found each other.

Ok, one thing I've realised over time is that a lot of people seemingly got into hogwarts as a kid and didn't realise that pretty much every part of the start is barely unique. It's like how AI art draws on people's art to make things. The other thing that I realised over time, is that a lot of things are super surface level, but it feels like a lot of people never saw that, especially people from the USA.
I was reading this article and stopped when I was in the second section because like, I think it's weird how people saw her as supporting people who had been abused. Everything was just a surface level thing. She works backwards from what she wants in a plot, rather than what elements in a story means. Like it's really evident from Shaun's video.
What I'm saying is if there's something you liked about the world of potter, then like, it's probably not come from jk, I heard it was round Order of the phoenix where she was allowed greater creative freedom, and it shows bc that's where I as a 14 year old decided the books really sucked now and I couldn't be bothered with them any more.
Further detail:
Harry's backstory:
Ok we want a special kid, who doesn't really have connections he cares about, so he can develop all his connections later in the story, a sort of black slate with no real problems.
The easiest way to do this is make him an orphan, but not a recent orphan. But then he can't be looked after by the state, so he still has a real family but he can't be close to them, so they have to be stereotypes of big bully characters and uhh send him to the cupboard under the stairs which most post-war uk houses of the time have.
He's not confined there though, but his uncle and aunt who are basically like evil step-mothers talk about how evil he is, but still allow him on school trips because they still allow him to do normal kid things because the plot needs that and they wouldn't take him to the zoo.
Also he's not seriously affected by this, they're just clowns, and he's the protagonist and he knows it. It's not like this is The Little Princess or Oliver Twist. Those protagonists are both sad and pitiful and this protagonist is calm about the whole situation, unless he can pull a prank or something.
Also he can do anything, which means he needs a lot of money suddenly, because the protagonist needs money, and he'll be a good rich person. A quick google says that some people estimated his wealth at over £2 million.
Weasleys poverty:
Ok so we want them to be poor, because The White Working Class are idolised in UK society (even if they're rich landlords now). And they're fine with being poor because they are happy with their lot, can't complain. They mend and make do, and they have a cheerful cottage, they don't spend their money on big televisions and they don't have a lot but they're happy and kind, just like the happy villagers from things such as Postman Pat or whatever else. They don't complain about inequality so much, if they can't afford something they just go without (they don't steal).
They like being poor and don't want handouts so even though Harry could share a lot of his money and solve a lot of their problems they still have to wear handmedown robes and have broken wands because some people just need to be poor for the story. "He would willingly have split all the money in his Gringotts vault with the Weasleys, but he knew they would never take it." This isn't Danny Champion of the World where someone has to do illegal and dangerous activities in part because they're poor. They're the Railway Children sort of poor, where the man who helps the family won't take any charity. The deserving poor, not idle shirkers or layabouts or beggars.
Malfoy:
Ethel Hallow Malfoy is the snobbish, stuck-up, vindictive, and sly rival and enemy of Mildred and her friends. She is favoured by Miss Hardbroom Snape, but appears to have no friends, apart from the rarely seen Drusilla Paddock Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, who is just as bad as Ethel Malfoy. Ethel Malfoy is described as being "one of those lucky people for whom everything goes right" which is what caused her to become so snobby. Ethel Malfoy is tall and thin (just like Mildred Harry) and has blonde hair which she wears in a ponytail with a black hair ribbon.
He's at boarding school like most rich kids because his dad doesn't love him as happens with every member of the aristocracy. Just ignore that everyone else is also at boarding school.
Other aspects: Every school in the uk has houses you get sorted into, it comes from that boarding schools have houses you get sorted into because of them being literal buildings. But then it just propagated though the school system to make it easier to run things like sports day and to count up the amount of detentions, de-merits, merits and distinctions which people get in various teams through the year. Then there's like an assembly at the end where they just say who won, but there's no real prizes for it.
Some schools have more than 4. You either get seperated by where you are in the alphabet, the teachers go through all the names and just pick one after the other (like 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4) , or by classroom.
There's no like "are you sanguine or melancholic" lmao
My school houses were Curie (primary) and Stratford (secondary). In secondary we had 6 school houses.
I'm pretty sure if there's anything in harry potter which you like, it's not come from jk's mind, it's either been in other stories, or it's actually something which exists. It's not like she's come up with magic wands or hidden societies.
It's like even the antisemitism, it's not like she invented anything new, she just grabbed old tropes, didn't think about them, she just wanted "creepy little banker" and was like "ah, these tropes are what I think should happen in my story" and then didn't think any further than that. Except when attacked which is when she goes "Well I didn't intend to do that." she didn't intend anything, because she doesn't think, she doesn't step back and look at the bigger picture on anything she does. It's all just individual elements which she feels that she can grab wholesale.

She's not coming back (Agatha x Reader)
Tumblr media
for @dragonqueen2201 hope you like it
______________________________
"I'm sorry" you whispered
"As You Should Be"
You shivered and forced yourself not to turn your face away when the woman's fingernails grazed your chin. Her magic was strong, much stronger than yours, and you'd already pissed her off, so you'd better stay still.
"You know you shouldn't come here alone" Agatha said
"I-I know, h-headmistress" you said "b-but Miss Gullet n-needed some documents and-"
"And Hardbroom?" she smiled cruelly
You felt the knot in your stomach twist further and you fought the tears that were beginning to form in your eyes. You were perfectly aware that it was a question made especially to punish you and amuse her. But you had to answer anyway.
"Y-you locked her in the painting with-" you shivered and knew the other woman could feel it
"With who?" she pressed, digging her nails deeper into your skin almost painfully
"W-with M-miss Cack-" you interrupted, clenching your fists "with Ada"
"That's how it is"
Agatha's smile widened as you squirmed under her gaze. She loved doing this, she loved making you suffer, reminding you that your dream life with her sister was over. That she had won.
In reality, you had no one to blame but yourself. If only you had chosen her and not Ada, as you should have, she wouldn't have had to do all this. Sure, she'd still be upset about not having school, but with you by her side, she might have let it slide.
But no, her insufferable sister had to be selfish and greedy. It wasn't enough for Ada to keep the school, with her mother's love and approval, but she also decided to steal you, fall in love and get you away from her.
But now she was gone, you would be hers, whether you wanted it or not. It was only a matter of time before you saw the light and understood that she had always been the best witch. She just had to be patient.
If only you didn't insist on trying to go against her. She had forbidden you to enter Hardbroom's office, see Ada, locked in the painting. She didn't want you to keep crying over someone who wouldn't come back. The faster you forget about her sister, the better.
"They are there because they deserve it" she said "and if you don't want to end up like them or worse, you better not make me angry"
You swallowed hard and shivered as you nodded. Agatha gave you a cruel smile and one last squeeze of your chin before letting go.
"I'll talk to Gullet, no one should send you here and you won't come on your own" she said "understood?"
"Y-yes headmistress" you answered meekly, full of fear
The older woman nodded satisfied, and raised her hand, her eyes never left you but before she disappeared, you heard her voice again.
"And Y/N" she muttered, making you look up.
"Y-yes?"
"She's not coming back" she said
You watched her disappear before walking out the door. Before closing it, you took one last look at the prison of your wife and best friend. You knew your sister-in-law wanted to break you, and make you lose hope, but you would never give up, not on Ada.

With You: Part 1- Happy Accidents
Hecate Hardbroom was a distant person who closed off her heart for fear being hurt by others She had enough heartbreak to last a lifetime Indigo moon.. Pippa Pentangle.. Her father.. And Julie Hubble.
Indigo was her first real taste of true failure and it led to her downfall in relationships. Pippa followed soon after in her way to prove she could be a good witch and not a disgrace as her father and mother liked to call her. So when she met Julie Hubble and her heart stutterd at the sight of the curly blonde she was fearful. Not only was Julie an ordinary but far worse she was the mother of a pupil. The mother of one Mildred Hubble. Yet she could not get the fiery blonde out of her mind.
Shortly after their parents' night Hecate felt something she hadn’t felt in so long. In Julie's verbal lashing she felt oddly..intrigued. She couldn’t help but stare mouth agape as the beautiful blonde gave her a run for her money. She quickly regained control and composed her behavior but each reasoning was met with a rebuttal, using the witches code of all things. The witch’s code which the darker haired witch held so dear.
Now weeks later all she could recall was the blondes satisfied smirk at chastising her
Miss Hardbroom had tried her hardest to rid that image from her mind and slowly it was working
So the following term when she was told Miss Hubble would be replacing Miss Mould and teaching art, here at the academy. She tried her hardest to ensure that wouldn’t happen. It was bad enough after the freeze and halloween festivities she had made a fool of herself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After speaking to Mildred about her new found witching status she had vanished from the dining hall towards her private chambers. By the time it was time for her to do her nightly rounds she had found Julie Hubble ascending the stairs and Hecate whose magic was still recovering from the freeze finally gave out as she fell to her knees. Miss Hubble, pleasant as always, rushed over to help her; she scolded her once more for good measure and helped her back into her private quarters and put her to bed. Hecate too tired to protest slept as soon as her head hit her pillow barely managing to change into her nightgown and that too had earned her another telling off to stop exhausting herself by the blonde. She could only smile as she slept to dreams of her. 3 days later when she awoke she was met with the same blonde and once more she was met with another telling off
“Oh good you’re awake, would you like some tea?” Hecate shook her head, her embarrassment of Julie having seen her in such a state slowly creeping up on her “Are you alright?” Her question was met with another nod from the still in bed witch “Oh good, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA THE FRIGHT YOU GAVE ME! 3 days! You’ve been asleep for 3 days, I left you to sleep and when I went to go see if Miss Cackle could transfer me home, she was asleep too! As was Millie and everyone else! I certainly wasn goin to walk down the bloody mountain at night, so I slept on your couch, hope you don’t mind, but to my surprise neither you, nor Miss Cackle or Millie or the other girls who had been frozen were awake the following day. Dimity and Ms Bat were the ones to figure out what happened. The ice had drained you magic and while it was restored when the founding stone was relit, your bodies all went through so much, your magic took a toll.” “The students!” Hecate found herself finding her voice with worry for the school “They’re ok, their magic so new was able to recover faster, Millie woke first but the others who weren’t affected are doing good. Dimity called in Miss Pentangle to help cover your courses” “Ada?”
“She’s ok too, still sleeping last I checked” With her questions answered Hecete felt her nerves subside only to come back full speed at the realization she is still in her nightgown, in bed, hair a mess Julie having sensed her discomfort offered to go check on Miss Cackle leaving Miss Hardbroom to collect herself and her thoughts
‘She’d stayed’ it was all she could think about, after knowing Mildred was ok and knowing she wasn’t in any danger Julie Hubble still stayed and had been checking on her. By the look of her couch in the sitting area she’d also been sleeping here. Her heart stuttered at the thought of the beautiful blonde sleeping in her living quarters She shook herself of those thoughts and made to dress and cleaned herself to relieve Pippa of her duties.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With the new term having started a couple weeks ago Hecate still did not accept Miss Hubble as the art teacher, even going as far to make her sit at a different table. She’d been told off later on for that one, away from the ears of the children and Hecate would be lying if that hadn’t fueled some dreams for her. She quickly thought better, knowing she would never feel the same and her heart ached at the fact.
Slowly though her desire to have Julie out of this school faded and instead she began looking forward to seeing her. She began to notice things, the way her smile was always wide and charming. The way her hair in the sunlight made it look like she was glowing. Miss Hubble, having noticed Miss Hardbroom had mellowed down had begun to direct her pleasantness to her and Hecate found it hard to snap when she was graced with that smile. She did however miss that fiery glint. Which is why she found herself outside the art room gathering her courage to annoy the blonde.
“Blimey must you always slam the doors you scared the hell out of me” Julie exclaimed having jumped causing the paintbrush she was holding to strike through the canvas she was currently sitting in front of “I did not slam the door, I merely…closed it with authority” The dark haired witch remarked with a slight twitch in her lips, however falling as she noticed Julie's painting of…her, now ruined The blonde sees her eye sullen at what her closing the door had done “There’s no worries, there’s no mistakes in art, simply..happy accidents” she reassured “How…quaint, is that supposed to resemble me?” “Oh” the blonde blushes looking down at her lap, “Yea sorry, I guess you’ve been my muse lately” Upon seeing the smaller woman blush she couldn’t help herself she reached her hand out to raise the others head and pushed a curl behind her ear to see her face more clearly She wasn’t sure what went through her mind but months of torment led her to kissing the blonde and to her great surprise she was kissing back, however her fear quickly took president and she pulled away abruptly “I- I Im so, ehm, I apologize, that was wildly inappropriate of me” and in a flick of her wrist she was gone to seclude herself in her room, already planning on avoiding dinner
“Oh no you don’t” Julie exhaled with resolve as she made her way out the art room up to Hecates room Immediately she knocked until the witch opened the door, her hair down and her face removed of makeup, and if it wasn’t for the tears Julie would say she looked incredibly beautiful Hecate stood there mouth agape and Julie set her face with determination and walked in right past her leaving her to close the door behind her and turn to look at the blonde staring at her with such intensity, she gulped “You kissed me- no it's my turn” She cut off when the other went to interrupt “for the past few weeks you’ve been trying to get me fired but then you look at me with those wonderful eyes and those smiles that make me melt and then you kiss me, and before I can even tell you how long I’ve wanted to do that, you walk off and leave me standing like a bloody school girl” “I-“ Hecate stammers not knowing what to say before Julie walks over to her, hands coming to her cheeks and kissing her with such fervor Hecate is backed onto the door She surrenders herself to what she’s wanted for months now kissing back, hoping Julie will not change her mind. Easing out of the kiss their foreheads resting together “You’ve been driving me insane ever since the freeze” “Try having to deal with your smiles and fiery determination since parents day” Hecate huffs Julie can only laugh before pulling Hecate down for another kiss, this one more passionate than the last “I knew it, I knew you were doing it on purpose, I could see your smiles after I’d tell you off” “You are quite the sight when angered Mzzz Hubble” “Julie.. call me Julie” she breaths as Hecate begins ravishing her neck “Julie..mmm I’d quite like to take you on..a..a date” Hecate finally manages “I'd like that” Julie replies pulling her back up for a kiss Hecate pulls back “then we can finish this after our date, say tomorrow night at 6?” “That’d be lovely but I'd rather you take me to bed now” Julie breaths nibbling on the witches ear lobe Hecate groans “You shall be the death of me, but that can be mm arranged” she barely manages before transferring herself and Julie onto the bed

Hi miss cackel 🤣🤣
Is miss camel your favourite character
Well met Sybil,
First of all, I have no idea who Miss Camel is, but maybe you could introduce me to her? She sounds kind ;) But no, I am not my favourite, it would be very selfish of me to favourite myself, don't you think?
Actually, my favourite is Agatha. Agatha has always been stronger than me and she is quite amazing. I still can't firgure out what for evil mother saw in her... In all honesty, She would be a great headmistress if I hadn't been asigned that place in the first place, and I really think she deserves better than what she got. Don't tell Miss Hardbroom I said that though 🤫🤫🤫 (If she asks, she is my favourite, of course 😉)

ahajahak so I keep thinking about how Mildred has a mum who loves and lives for her daughter and who is so proud of her and wants nothing more in this world than to see her happy.
like she took the magic thing pretty calmly and didn’t even bat an eyelash when her ELEVEN year old daughter said @mum im a witch and this is my witch BFF Maud and this my new with teacher HB she was totally cool with it and let this ELEVEN year old make a pretty big decision on her own
y’all Julie trusts her daughters heart implicitly and cares so much about her happiness that it KILLS me that she can’t be a part of everything at cackles and can’t be a part of the witching community like all the other parents and how much harder she has to work to be a part of Millie’s new life
It. Breaks. My. Damn. Heart. because you know that there’s going to be weekend trips and school shopping and college hunting and millie will have to ask for special permission so that the her mum will be able to attend and YOU KNOW that there’s gonna be places that say no and millie will have to go even though she doesn’t want to because a place that doesn’t accept her mum and background is not a place she wants to go to but people will urge her and want her to have her best chance and you know who’s gonna step in and go with this child? Who’s gonna be there when Julie can’t because the witching world is prejudice??
miss hecate hardbroom, potions mistress at cackles academy
and like. She’s gonna be there for the big moments too right? Because Mildred may have been a kind hearted monster of a child who didn’t like to follow rules and didn’t have any discipline and couldn’t be bothered with the Witch’s Code slowly starts to find her spot in the witching community with hecates help. and there’s tutoring sessions and late dinners with Julie and Mildred and hb (and Miss Pentangle bc Mildred is a meddling lil witch) because hb sometimes helps millie over the summer and the hubbles are nothing if not hospitable and grateful for hb showing up at their apartment to help Mildred with the ins and outs of the witching world ( because you can’t just learn all about being a witch in school you have to grow UP around a witch and her culture to truly understand it and hb knows this and tries to remedy Millie’s 11 years without that) and just, hb stepping in when Julie can’t out of necessity and love is so soft and sweet
hb going to college visits with Mildred and going to witching stores that don’t allow non magical people in to buy robes and hats and quills and books, hb going to the Hubble’s apartment for tea and following Mildred to the village visits during the weekend when parents are encouraged to visit and Julie can’t. just. hb and millie. being awkward and wanting so much to fit with each other and trying so hard to make their hearts work the same I live for that awkward type of love where neither of them know the other treasures them and still tries to make the other proud

Snape-Hardbroom-Hobbes Headcanons Part 2:
-While Snape’s parents where abusive and negligent, Hardbroom’s parents were the complete opposite; being more Bohemian and well-meaning.
-That being said, both the Snape’s and the Hardbroom’s were middle-lower class.
-In appearance, Nick Hobbes is a combination of Severus along with Tobias and/or Tobias’s own father, (we’ll call him “Tiberius”). Nick might also share physical traits with Eileen’s father, Severus Regen Prince.
-When marrying for the first time, their home was in a small house near Cackle’s Academy. With the house destroyed due to a Death-Eater attack, the house would be abandoned until it was bought, sold and revamped into Cosie’s Old Mill Tea Rooms.
-While Nick was close to his adopted parents, The Hobbes, he suffered greatly in school at the hands of bullies. This would culminate in his peers locking him outside the school during a blizzard.

but like, imagine mildred actually being hecate’s daughter and in miss softbroom she interacts with her and just like-------  i’m writing it, the modified version will go in my mumbroom series, x
-
She’s walking down the corridor and then she hears her mum calling her name. It surprises her and Mildred turns, immediately becoming terrified at the sight of her mother coming towards her - a hoard of people at her back - with a deranged happy smile, eyes wide and bright, her hair out and all over the place.
“Mum?” she can’t help but take a step back, scared. The thing is, her mother sees it and stops where she stands, the rose twirling in her hand going still.
“Mildred,” Hecate repeats, calmer, “you’ve got a good track record in going behind the backs of authorities and saving the school, do you-”
“Miss Hardbroom, we really need to get you back to the potions class!” Bea, the first year, interrupts, anxious as she looks at Mildred guiltily. Immediately, Mildred knows she’s done something - the guilty looks from her fellow first-years and even Miss Drill confirming it - and she becomes angry.
Of course, Hecate sees that, too.
“Mildred-” she starts, for the third time, before Mildred steps past her, yelling.
“What did you do to my mum? What did you do to her?”
“We- we just gave her a little bit of personality-changing potion-” Bea starts, before Mildred is twirled around to face her mother, who looks at her with those wide eyes and wild hair, but it’s still her mother and she has her vulnerable face on.
“It’s all fine, Mildred, I promise. I’m just letting out a little steam. Julie is already supervising some third years making an antidote in my classroom,” she says, calm voice soothing Mildred’s anger, but not her rage at what has been done to her mother, obviously without her consent. “There’s an inspector in the school. she’ll close down Cackle’s, if we let her. this potion has let me get very introspective about myself - I’m seeing things different and you know what, Mildred Hubble?”
“What?” Mildred asks, voice quiet.
Her mother taps her forehead. “We’re a lot more alike than you or even I, think. We have the same instincts and the same moral compass - it’s just our methods and our choices that define us differently.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really, Mildred,” Hecate smirks, before tapping her nose, standing straight - or rather, wonky, leaning casually, the rose still twirling in her hand and that sparkle of mischief Mildred so rarely sees in her eyes. “Now, I have a plan that involves another batch of the same potion used on me; unknowingly embarrassing my normal self in front of the entire student body and staff; and this inspector. Want to join forces, Mildred Hardbroom?”

my personal worst witch head cannon is that Mildred is kind of a cringe-y preteen. She dabs when she does a correct potion, all of the girls don’t know what she’s doing but now they do it too. She throws papers into the trash saying “Kobe!” During the summer she goes on the internet and gets up to date on the new memes. She comes back the next term saying “Do you know da way?” and saying that she wants to eat the ‘Forbidden fruit’ that is a Tide Pod. None of the girls know what a Tide Pod is, let alone laundry detergent. HB thinks Mildred is making obscure biblical references in an attempt to rationalize her troublesome behavior, so she assigns Mildred 300 lines every time she hears anything about Tide Pods.
