im on the edge here tho bc on the other hand it would just fit, i think with this like so many other things in mq's looong illustrious life, that mq maybe thought, fantasized about nasty outcomes but... DIDNT ACTUALLY INTEND for that...he was like hoho what if! but genuinely just wanted to be closer with xl in practice. but of course no one would believe him and this time maybe he wouldnt either. and the fx situationship added to it, with how delicate he can be about fx in particular & like, the weight of all the times the worst has been thought of him (i hope im not poor meowmeowifying him here too much but sometimes you do get a little offended! on his behalf!) ... so when hua cheng just starts biting and fx is like there to help mq would perhaps react like oh❓️ you believed i would do this❓️ fuck off‼️ even though... mu qing you DID and also hua cheng has got your arm now
sometimes you must meow meowify your faves its inevitable but also he really doesnt have bad intentions hes just kind of unpleasant so people assume the worst and like dont get me wrong he is kind of a rude freak but hes not evil or a bad person!! yeah i really dont think he would be trying to seduce xl away from hc i think he would just unintentionally end up playing gay chicken with xl because he thought nothing would ever happen like he dreamed of it but he knew it wouldnt.... UNTIL IT DID!! and maybe he and xl would be having conversations about fidelity and devotion and relationships and mq would be speaking his mind but again xl is supposed to be this perfect incorruptible person and even though mq knows hes not that all the time he still would never do anything like that.... OR WOULD HE!!! and mq would definitely get blamed for it (now its my turn to meow meowify him) even though ITS NOT ALL HIS FAULT!!! it takes two to tango as they say why is no one biting xl??? although yes mq would be like how DARE you think i would do something like this??? <- has done it

Love's keen sting
by incorruptible_chastity_meatballs Mu Qing was destined for greatness. Those were the words his mother had always told him. And they became the very mantra that Mu Qing lived by. The ambition that burned within him was stronger than any despair that his life's endless shortcomings brought to him. He hailed from a lowly birth, a mere servant's child that had not even a penny to his name. None of that mattered. He knew he was capable of escaping this purgatory and making a name for himself. If it wasn't in his destiny, then he would change the course of fate from the strength of his willpower alone. And so, he persevered. He knew that one day, an opportunity would come, one that would lead him and his mother to the lives that they deserved. That day did indeed come, in a way that he had never expected. Even years henceforth, Mu Qing would still not know how to feel about it. Thorn of lenience, day 2
Written for Mulian Week 2023: Blooms of Our Yearning. @mulianweek-event
Prompt (Day Two): Lily of the valley (vulnerability)
Xie Lian learns about Mu Qing, and Mu Qing learns to let some secrets slip.
The explicit rating is for chapters 4 and 7.
Or, read the chapter here:
Taizi Dianxia confronted him.
Mu Qing wasn’t entirely surprised, but he also hadn’t seen it coming quite so soon.
As Mu Qing was arranging Taizi Dianxia's reading material, the crown prince unexpectedly approached him. Mu Qing would bring these scrolls, booklets, and notes with him when Xie Lian travelled to continue his cultivation studies. They were alone in the crown prince's private chamber, and Xie Lian had been unusually quiet.
It was three months after Mu Qing had listened in on Xie Lian and Feng Xin talking about him and his troubles with the other staff in the palace. Things had definitely gotten easier for him after that, which Mu Qing found difficult to swallow.
Mu Qing had time to read more of the reports that other shadows had sent him because the other servants had largely left him alone. They frequently gave Mu Qing headaches. The king's most recent decree somewhat appeased the western and southern provinces, but the eastern cities' discontent persisted.
His handler warned Mu Qing to be especially cautious of anyone inside the palace walls who was from the area. The court was concerned that things would only get worse.
He burned the letters the same way he always did and wished he had a third working eye. Two to keep an eye on Taizi Dianxia and a third for whatever reason.  If he were being honest, though, he'd probably use that one to keep an eye on Xie Lian as well.
Mu Qing heeded the warning and arranged for a different courier for the carriage today. He was pleased with the development until he got this letter from his handler.
He was sweating profusely as he clutched the letter behind his back. Taizi Dianxia arrived too soon; he hadn't gotten rid of it yet! He had backed up, rattling the desk and watching one scroll from the corner of his eyes tumble down the neat pile he had created.
Mu Qing muttered a curse. Xie Lian's gaze darted to the mess and then back to Mu Qing. For some reason, the crown prince had appeared overjoyed. But when Taizi Dianxia frowned, Mu Qing had a feeling he was in for it this time.
"Mu Qing."
"Taizi Dianxia." Mu Qing’s voice did not waver.
The crown prince watched him with narrowed eyes. "Did you arrange for this?"
Mu Qing bowed lightly, his hands fumbling with the letter, trying to bury it between the pages of one of the books on the desk behind him. Mu Qing could reach further by bending forward a little more. "Begging Taizi Dianxia’s forgiveness, this servant does not know what His Highness is referring to."
Mu Qing had pressed his handler once more to persuade the king and court to allow the crown prince to return to Taicang Mountain and continue his studies at the Royal Holy Pavilion. As the prince's relationship with the king deteriorated and began to affect the queen, and because the crown prince's achievements were widely praised, the decision to let him go eventually fell out of the king's hands. The court then decided the crown prince was allowed to go. Unfortunately, the king and his son were unable to come to terms, so if he wanted to maintain some level of amity between them, he had to permit his son to resume his studies.
Xie Lian's excitement was to be expected. There was no time to waste in making the necessary preparations for his departure. However, even if Taizi Dianxia was correct in thinking Mu Qing had a hand in it, there was no chance Mu Qing would actually admit it. After all, a mere servant had no business interfering in such matters.
After a few moments of closely examining Mu Qing, Xie Lian blinked. "I see," he said. "I’m grateful, in any case. Do with that what you will."
Mu Qing was finally able to straighten his spine. He had successfully wretched the letter between the books. "Though this servant regrets his shortcomings, seeing Taizi Dianxia in good spirits is a blessing."
That caused Xie Lian to chuckle, and Mu Qing's eyes quickly veered away. He was confused and annoyed as he stared incredulously at the wall. He was baffled as to why he kept unintentionally turning away. He only hoped Taizi Dianxia wouldn't think of him as being even more impolite than Mu Qing already was.
Mu Qing quickly wrapped up his preparations because he was well aware that Xie Lian was eager to leave.
Actually, if Mu Qing dragged his feet any longer, the prince might just burst through the doors and sprint towards Taicang Mountain by himself.
Feng Xin waved them off, using the prince's absence to complete his training and education and officially earn his position. Feng Xin would be the crown prince's imperial bodyguard in earnest the next time Taizi Dianxia returned. Xie Lian felt excited by the prospect and wished Feng Xin well.
Mu Qing was grateful to Feng Xin, who had quietly assisted in putting an end to the majority of the staff's annoying behaviour. Having said that -
"Don't screw it up," Mu Qing said as he twirled his hair between his fingers.
"Don't get His Highness killed," countered Feng Xin.
"We’re going to the Royal Holy Pavilion." Mu Qing rolled his eyes. "The worst that can happen is that Taizi Dianxia bores himself to death."
This wasn’t true, but Mu Qing had to insist that there was no danger, or there would have been no way for security to allow the crown prince to leave without guards as it was now.
Mu Qing was a very competent guard, even though it wasn't well known. As a result, in order for this journey to proceed, every single one of the king's courtiers had to go to great lengths and insist that everything was calm and the political tension was not that bad.
Mu Qing was also told to put on an act. It helped that Feng Xin found his blasé demeanour annoying. He hoped that the bodyguard's scowl would eventually turn into a permanent mark. That would be very amusing.
Feng Xin lost his temper, just as Mu Qing had hoped. "So make sure that doesn't happen!"
Mu Qing mocked him. "Do you want me to sing to His Highness?" he crooned. "Do you want me to be his entertainer?"
"Both of you," Xie Lian said as he moved in between them, raising his hands so that the palms were facing either of them. His lips twitched, indicating that he thought they were amusing, but his closed eyes were clearly trying to express his disapproval. This combined with the sudden, clear realisation that Feng Xin and Mu Qing were now taller than Xie Lian resulted in an incredibly ineffective reprimand. Mu Qing couldn't help but chuckle at how ridiculous the situation was.
In response to Taizi Dianxia appearing a little foolish, Feng Xin, the fool, burst into bouldering laughter.
Xie Lian had opened his eyes to look fondly at Feng Xin before turning to Mu Qing to see if he, too, thought Feng Xin was just a little weird like that. But before he could say anything, he came to a halt, his eyes widening and his lips slightly parted in surprise.
Mu Qing quickly schooled his expression into something presentable, but he knew he ended up looking like a startled animal.
Xie Lian's face brightened, his eyes forming crescents as his cheeks puffed up, his voice full of wonder. "You laughed."
When additional staff members showed up to formally bid the crown prince farewell, Mu Qing was spared from speaking.
Taizi Dianxia immediately whirled around to face them all and expressed gratitude for their good wishes. Mu Qing went to check on the carriage to make sure everything was in order and that no traps had been set while he had been turned away to speak to Feng Xin, his face scorching hot. Mu Qing needed to retreat and calm down for a moment, even though he felt it was unnecessary and offensive to do so.
Eventually, Xie Lian joined him, and Mu Qing assisted him in entering the simple carriage. Given how few people had access to the palace or Taixang Mountain, the road was relatively private, but it was still best not to stand out. The arrangement was approved with only a little pushback from a few court members because Xie Lian hadn't objected to travelling in modesty. Mu Qing took hold of the horses' reins and directed them to set out on their journey.
He was prepared for a lengthy, quiet journey when Xie Lian abruptly, but royally, sat down next to him.
Mu Qing, startled, looked at Xie Lian, then back to the carriage, and then back at Xie Lian. Mu Qing only saw Xie Lian at that point, and he forgot he was Taizi Dianxia . "Did you seriously climb out of the carriage while we were moving?"
"Yeah," Xie Lian replied, his face contorted with a shit-eating grin that revealed his undying pride in himself.
"I could've stopped the carriage."
"I'm sure you could've."
Mu Qing's face twitched into one of frustration, and he turned to face the front once more, firmly rejecting Xie Lian. "May the Heavens protect me, Feng Xin was right, I should concentrate on preventing your death."
"I was perfectly safe!" In an effort to regain Mu Qing's attention, Xie Lian leaned forward. "You've seen me do far more dangerous things in training."
"Irrelevant," Mu Qing grumbled, knowing full well that he was being childish.
Xie Lian laughed at him. Mu Qing did not force him to return inside. He didn't do much of anything, and he most certainly didn't move.
Xie Lian had gotten too close to Mu Qing, and their legs were almost touching. Mu Qing didn't trust himself to widen the gap between them rather than inching closer, so he chose not to move at all.
They stayed that way for a long time. Taizi Dianxia was clearly enjoying the scenery and seemed content to be on the road. Mu Qing could feel himself relaxing again, though he was embarrassed by his earlier lapse in formality in front of the crown prince. He was lucky Taizi Dianxia was so friendly to everyone he met, because the crown prince would never tolerate his retainer's tone like this.
"It's unfortunate that the horse caretaker became ill this morning," Taizi Dianxia said abruptly. "I pray for him to have good health."
Mu Qing's heart did a strange little dance that should not have been physically possible. He cleared his throat to get rid of something that was inexplicitly stuck there. "Indeed."
"I am also relieved," Xie Lian continued, "that they judged you capable of both managing the horses and safely transporting me to Taicang Mountain. That saved them from having to find a replacement in so little time."
To Mu Qing's horror, Xie Lian revealed a folded sheet of paper that he twirled around in front of him. It was the letter Mu Qing had hidden inside a book after Xie Lian had gotten the upper hand on him.
Taizi Dianxia must have noticed it and went looking for it at some point, eventually discovering the letter.
Xie Lian clutched the letter to his chest. "Mu Qing," he said, his tone solemn and low, frightening Mu Qing. "I am glad I get to spend time on the road with you like this."
"...Taizi Dianxia..." Mu Qing's voice trembled briefly before fading.
Mu Qing had a good education and had been trained in combat, espionage, and, of course, rhetoric. Mu Qing trusted himself to be capable of talking his way out of any situation, or at the very least of minimising the damage. He would not be rendered speechless under any circumstances. Except for right now.
Xie Lian had reached out to cover Mu Qing's mouth. His palm resting against Mu Qing's lips was more effective in keeping him still than any torture resistance training he had received.
Mu Qing didn't dare to breathe again after seeing how Xie Lian's skin warmed up as a result of it. He couldn't keep his thoughts focused.
"I know you can't possibly be just a servant," Xie Lian admitted. "I think I've known for a while. Simply put, you are overqualified."
Mu Qing sat and waited. His heart was racing, but he knew he didn't have to be afraid of the prince. Mu Qing simply did not consider the possibility that Taizi Dianxia would turn on him, even if it was justified in this situation.
"Clearly, you wield some power within the court. An influence that, as far as I know, you have only ever used in my favour." Mu Qing tried not to be disappointed when Xie Lian drew his hand back. Xie Lian's voice was light. "I appreciate your assistance in arranging my return to the Royal Holy Pavilion."
"..." Mu Qing weighed his options. Denying his involvement would be an insult to Xie Lian's perceptiveness. Even though it was the right thing to do, they were alone with no one to report him for it, and Mu Qing couldn't bear the thought of hurting Xie Lian. So he cleared his throat. "You're welcome."
Mu Qing had all the gratitude he could possibly need and more in the kind but blinding smile he got in return. Even if just a little bit of honesty had turned Taizi Dianxia into a sun for Mu Qing, he couldn't bring himself to regret being more honest than he had any right to be.

the immortality concept in tgcf is always interesting to think about, especially with the age range that the human mind cannot really comprehend... but maybe it's best for me not to think too much about it at midnight when i have uni early in the morning 😞😭 there are a lot of thoughts tho
you described the dynamic i had in mind for them perfectly!! mq's way of showing care by scolding and nagging and teasing that at time could come out as a touch too sharp. lqq's of being loud when defending and engaging into banter but keeping it light and not taking the teasing too close to heart unless it comes to his morality stands. they just weirdly compliment one another, especially with the way you said lqq takes the spotlight on the stage while mq is more "behind the curtain" type when dealing with things. you're so right, thinking about them makes me deranged as well
i do feel like the gods would be more vocal about the dislike towards mq when he was still a young god, and yeah especially those 33. while mq we see is well respected, and still very much disliked and distrusted, it is mq of 800+ years of presence in the heavenly court, and i do think many would be tight lipped around him regarding whatever his business are. but thinking about the backlash he would be facing during their earlier years/ centuries of friendship, i think they would be more vocal about it, if a bit sneaky with the way they would talk considering mq's temper with fx and general reputation that has been following him. 🤔 and well... there's also the broom throwing thing that has been going on apparently :'))
and he would definitely be on the bigger receiving end of it than lqq, especially considering their backgrounds and what the heaven considers "right". while lqq may be considered naive, he is still a noble that technically belongs in a way mq never could in their eyes.
but lqq still not standing by the bullying, even during the 'fight' is ekejjejejeej especially because i lqq knows that bullying is wrong no matter who's at the receiving end and, parallel to the mulian situation, there would be no shielding behind the higher authority to make it stop, just a very straightforward way to handle it. and i feel like mq, even if he is somewhat even struggling to admit he's miserable without lqq, would feel extremely touched knowing the way lqq would handle it 🥹🥹
no shade at mulian, literally my fave ship ever! i talk about them so much to my friends i feel like all of our brains are fried at this point lol they can fit so much angst and there are honestly dozens of ideas for fics that would likely never see the light of the day but we have the hope cuz we're all delusional 😔✊
just the parallels between them make me absolutely crazy, especially since i always kinda pictured mq as a type to get particularly adopted by the idealistic "sunshine type" people around him and get dragged around while he scowls and acts like he doesn't enjoy it, and then eventually ending up genuinely liking them, no matter how much they would clash at times with their ideologies. xl, sqx, i have an ongoing rants about mq and qyz friendship every other week. kinda pissed off that i didn't remember lqq until recently but it's never too late to start the brainrot anyway
i also went and checked the extras qianqing interaction, and it was actually mq seeing that lqq was in an awkward position being both the victim and the culprit and trying to send him back to heaven (it was the extra chapter where xl felt pain bcs of the guoshi mask he melted into a key?? i only searched for their names so again i have no idea/) but that was enough to have me covering my mouth and squealing
no at this point i will have to write *something* about qianqing, it would literally eat at me alive if i don't. life is busy and hard rn, but it will have to be done in this lifetime 😭
Mq has always given me the sense that he seeks out people with more emotional freedom than he feels he has. He spends so much of his time showing restraint and being distant that whenever I read sections of the book where Fu Yao makes an appearance, I see the way he lets his personality come out more. Maybe choosing the name “Fu Yao” was (among other reasons) mq’s way of literally saying he’s giving himself more freedom.
So like— it makes sense that mq has a pattern of associating with people who express themselves so freely— even if he sometimes takes shots at those people (mostly fx but also occasionally xl). Lqq is entirely unrestrained in a way that’s familiar but still unique. He’s one of the few gods who would step in or stand up for another without any ulterior motives— there’s nothing lqq would want to gain by standing up for mq in their early years. Whether he’s still angry with mq or not— it’s the right thing to do and that’s enough for him.
Meanwhile I feel like mq hates feeling like he’s once again being seen to hide behind another prince for protection. Mq likes to be in control of his circumstances— even if he could ask for help.
“I don’t need anyone fighting my battles.”
“No— but someone should have your back.”
Maybe that’s what it is about them actually? Lqq is so quick to jump up and declare injustice that mq thinks lqq would be trying to shield him when lqq is actually trying to advocate for his better treatment. Lqq learned the importance of unity and he practiced it well before ascending, so his type of support might be less about defending mq personally and more about shaming the gods for not setting a better example. Maybe he doesn’t even give mq the option to hide behind him.
(Related note, I can’t help thinking this type of tension would rise if lqq caught mq throwing a broom or snapping it in half— like ofc lqq is still mad but ofc he’s gonna try and connect the dots— maybe he even heard some of the gods laughing about their “gifts” to the young General.)
But okay now I’m thinking about the extra you mentioned and oooooooo
Mq confronting lqq in the mortal realm and failing to convince him to return to heaven. It’s a side of lqq mq has never seen. He’s not driven by a sense for justice anymore, now lqq wants revenge— maybe mq tells him that. Maybe it only angers lqq more. Either way, lqq doesn’t return.
(I actually have a similar scenario in my brain between lqq and newly-mortal pei xiu, which was actually the idea that got me started in qianxiu rarepair hell but that’s a separate space altogether LMAO)
Anyway—! If writing is too exhausting given life’s demands I am always happy to keep exploring these deranged (affectionate) scenarios. Life persists, but so does the brainrot!

mu qing wouldn’t describe himself as overzealous. while he’s tested his limits in martial arts & cultivation alike, he’s always kept a certain poise. roots to consider even when he outstretched his hand toward a long-awaited sun. yet when things became too difficult, he’d eventually draw it back.
so why was it, today, he rented out an entire inn & prepared luxuries many could only dream of with the hope he’d receive a single prayer from a single person before the day concluded? all at the risk of blackening his reputation too.
the person meant to receive his affections was lucky he sent in a prayer. if not, mu qing might have destroyed several palaces out of anger ... & the person he wanted to meet along with them.
he descended in haste, robes fluttering behind him. without any worry about stray followers in his temple — xie lian never prayed to him in a crowd, fortunately for both of them — he went in. at a wave of his hand, the doors shut, closing off any annoyances that could disturb them.
❝ xie lian, ❞ he called. they embraced each other. mu qing had his hands pressed completely on xie lian & his robes. sometimes, he adjusted where he held him, very obviously feeling the fabric up. he stroked where the cloth was softest. it was a habit he failed to get rid of.
then, as if satisfied with it, he placed a dainty finger underneath xie lian’s chin & tipped his head back to meet his lips. it wasn’t much, but mu qing simply wanted them to be touching. or, in better words, mu qing wanted to touch him. their meetings relied on chance & secrecy, so their meetings were irregular. they could hold each other every day for a week, but they could also never get a glimpse for months. it was cruel. like this, they’d go through countless partings, never knowing if they could brush shoulders again.
was it any surprise mu qing gave his all the days fate pushed them together? it was this secrecy — this privacy — that made him want to keep reaching for the light.
❝ hmph, do you know how many hours you’ve already wasted today? ❞ the god gave a glare, but no real coldness seeped through. ❝ it’s your birthday, you know. ❞ he rolled his eyes. pulling away from his lover, he tilted his head. his hand came up to latch onto xie lian’s, ready to take him away or pull him in closer. with a neutral expression, he shifted into a disguise.
mu qing wouldn’t describe himself as overzealous. but in this moment, while holding xie lian’s hand, he thought that maybe the risks would be worth it.
he grinned at the other & a flash of playfulness sparked on his slightly younger features.
❝ come with me. ❞
