By Ken James: This was another one of those days where I was apprehensive to go out because it was just cold and rainy. If there's any advice I could give newbies, it would be to not look for perfect conditions, push through it, and go out anyway. I've never regretted going out to photograph, but I have definitely regretted not going out, like when the clouds break and you see a burner sunset, but by then, it's too late.

The Pacific NW is known for its waterfalls. The largest waterfall in the United States by flow rate (how much water) is the famous Niagra falls between New York and Canada. But the 2nd largest water falls are these, the Willamette Falls on the Willamette river in Oregon City on the south side of Portland. For the record, the 1st and 2nd biggest water falls in the United States by flow rate used to be within a few hundred miles or so from these ones. They were the 5th and 6th largest in the world. But The Dalles and Grand Coulee dams submerged them in their lakes of the Columbia River. The tallest waterfalls in the USA are in Hawaii, but the tallest ones in the continental US are in the neighboring state of Washington. Even the Multnomah Falls not too far from these falls are 3 times taller than Niagra (but no where near the volume of water). So Niagra is impressive, but we really like our waterfalls here in the NW! The flow for these is regulated by a hydro power system, dam, dike. This gives it the sharp line from the river / lake to the cascade. It's been many, many years since I stopped to see these falls but I had occasion in early October to be in the area. They used to be more visible from the highway on the far side but I found the trees and brush have grown up quite a bit. Besides, it was always a view more from the back side than even this so it wasn't the best. This overlook on the south side of the river gives this slightly better view. . Oct 2022 .
