Musical recommendation: EPIC
Tumblr media
Are you a huge mythology freak and musicals enthusiast? Need some demigods related content while waiting to the PJO series? Looking for a cool soundtrack to listen to while playing “Hades”? Still can’t get over the Iliad’s ending? Are you a fan of how the story-telling works in videogames? In that case I have the perfect recommendation for you! EPIC: The Musical
Epic started as concept album whose songs, book and lyrics were made by Jorge “Jay” Rivera-Herrans. With hard work and creativity, it later became a full 2 hours musical, which I hope to see on stage one day. With incredible and beautiful songs it tells us the story of the Greek hero Odysseus, from his last days fighting at Troy to his return to his beloved Ithaca.
I won’t lie while reading “The Iliad” and “Ajax” Odysseus was not among my faves.  What can I say? Cassandra, Hector and Patroclus came first in my tier list. But thanks to this musical little Ody has definitely won a place in my heart.
I don’t even know where I should start! Catchy and deep songs, amazing instrumental, powerful voices, touching story, a sweet and healthy fandom… Simply perfect! Every compliment I can give to this musical is not enough compared with all the praises it truly deserves and you have to listen to it to understand what I am talking about.
So, what are you waiting for? I am dropping the links here of the author’s TikTok, Youtube and Spotify (Although only a few songs are available here) accounts where you can listen to this amazing work. Hope you like it!

first of all this is so cute??
also uhh hi I'm finch!! I LOVE anastasia, newsies, beetlejuice, moulin rouge, sweeney todd, les mis. I do dance mostly but I do some theater when I can. uhhh I'm a huge English and History nerd. And outside of showtunes I listen to a lot of different stuff but mostly indie??? maybe?? I think?? oh and I love pink and black :3
HII!! thank you so much! I'm so excited to show this one AHH
Tumblr media
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
this is mostly because you said you liked english and history - this one definitely has a lot of elements like that to it! I feel like it definitely is similar to les mis because it has a mix of both happy and sad songs to it (both very good <33). I also think you'll like this one because in a lot of the productions I've looked at, there's some great dance numbers, so considering you're a dancer you should enjoy them! oh and it's definitely got an indie feel to it, though that's mostly just in the movie <33
I first saw this one as a college production where a lot of the roles were gender swapped, and loved it so much. from then on, I've been listening to the sound track NONSTOP (ok but now that I've made the Hamilton reference I have to say that Ham Ham definitely suits you, too!!)
I have to at least put in a little word for the movie version (1973) because it might just be one of my top ten of all time. everything in it is so over dramatic, just the way I like it 😋 (ok and I might have a small crush on Judas but that’s beside the point)
here are my favs (this was so hard to pick I love them all):
(this is one from each of the main productions- they all have great and varying qualities to them!)
thank you soso much for sending something in, you sound super cool <3 let me know what you think, this might be one of my favorite musicals of all time!
PEACE OUT✌️

Happy Dracula Daily 2023, all! I'm guessing many followers already know there's a Dracula musical, but if you didn't, consider yourself informed. :D It's got music by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde, Scarlet Pimpernel, Death Note) and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton (Sunset Boulevard together, a bunch of other stuff individually).
In fact, there's more than one! And that list, which goes to Wikipedia, is missing various international shows, like the Czech musical from 1995. I confess I couldn't tell you which are good; horror is just not my genre even when there's singing and dancing.
So musical reccers, what's your favorite musical adaptation of Dracula or and/or vampire lore? Doesn't have to be an actual stage show! As long as a vampire sings I'd say it counts.
Note: Obviously, if this is your first year on the Dracula Daily train you'll want to wait before checking out any of these so as to avoid spoilers. That's not to say that any of them are likely to be completely accurate to the book (though the Frank Wildhorn version really isn't the worst as adaptations go), but better safe than sorry, especially when the book has so many suspenseful twists if you don't know more than what you learned via cultural osmosis.

Since we're talking about Terry Silver and sex:
I can't help but think of the song Gibson Girl by Ethel Cain (albeit taken completely out of context of the story it's from)
but just:
"black leather and dark glasses"
"He's cold blooded so it takes more time to bleed"
"Obsession with the money, addicted to the drugs, he's in love with my body, that's why he's fucking it up"
etc
but I can't help but associate that song with him
Honestly, yes, thank you --- this song is excellent and very much deserves to be added to this blog's long roster of wonderfully recommended songs that remind us all of Terry Silver. 🖤

Musical Review- Moulin Rogue
Possible Spoilers!
Tumblr media
I know it’s been a while since I posted a review, but here we go.
For those of your who don’t know me personally, I am quite the musical fan. I have had the amazing opportunity to see many different shows in theaters and feel the music swell up inside of me. Recently, I was blessed to see Moulin Rouge in London and it was just fantastic!
I went into the show without a clue of songs, plot, anything, which is quite uncommon for me, but also a good thing as I don’t think I would have even bought a ticket if I knew. I, like many musical fans, am very critical of jukebox musicals. It feels like the pop songs take away from the set, dialogue, costumes, and it just seems forced. But the way that they mixed the songs and the tunes blended just enough that it still had an authentic musical feel and didn’t destroy the other aspects of the show.
Tumblr media
Another thing that would have killed my interest is the plot, or lack thereof. Boiled down it’s just the old play with in a play where the fake play just reflects the actual play, the love triangle that’s barely a triangle, and the war between love and money, where they must make the man with money the most comically evil person to make a proper argument against the money. And don’t even get me started how they used a women as the object of two men’s desire, before killing her off. All ideas that are almost dull at this point.
Tumblr media
The show’s saving grace were the costumes and the actors that managed to shine through despite all the possible faults. Every set and stage move had me breathless, it looked amazing.
I love the more technical parts of a musical, costumes and stage mechanics are my bread and butter, and this satisfied my thirst. In the past I have often seen traveling musicals, ones that come and go for the theater after a period of time, but being able to see the permanent part of the stage, like the windmills in the molding, the added length of stage around the audience, and the lights hanging above me, were just visually stunning. The way that they pulled off a few of the costume changes just fed my little musical nerd heart.
Tumblr media
I also feel like there should be an honorable mention for the way that the show failed the bechdel test, though you almost wouldn’t notice. Just because most of the show seemed to be a white man from america screwing over French minorities, there was a fantastic amount of diversity. Women, though most in nothing but corsets, were definitely front and center, managing to pull off some decent dynamic female characters. Also, the amount of queer coded, and actually queer, characters was awesome. Not only was there a MtF drag dressing character (who was not mentioned in any plot or synopsis I could find, but was very much a part of the show) and but there was also a relationship between Henry and one of the male dancers, which I also don’t know it is apart of every show or just the one I saw. The male dancer that Henry had a situationship with ended up being the one who betrayed Statine and Christian, allowing not just for queer characters but multi faceted queer characters, which will always get a round of applause from me, no matter how small. It reminded me that not everything has to be saying something. The musical wasn’t “woke” and it didn’t have “an agenda” it was just a good time with good representation that wasn’t super in your face, but also wasn’t hidden into the background, which I think important to display in media. That kind of diversity is something that should always be showcased in musical theater, and I’m happy that it was.
Tumblr media
Overall, I had a fun time. I’m glad that I was able to give the show a chance, and even if it wasn’t a deep, world stopping commentary, or a huge diversity win, it was a good show. I enjoyed myself, and it did remind me it’s okay to just enjoy a show with cool costumes and an awesome set. Even though I might still feel like jukebox musicals are a little lazy, sometimes it’s nice to just know the songs.

Come From Away Review
If I had to recommend one musical that I think anyone would like, I would choose Come From Away.
The show really does have something for everyone. You might expect a musical about 9/11 to be a unilateral downer, but it’s much more than that. It is, of course, very poignant at times, but it’s also funny, uplifting, and dramatic at times. Above all, though, the entire show is extremely human. I hate when conflict feels forced in media, and I really appreciate how there are no real “villains” in the entire show. The conflicts center around things like a mother who is worried sick over her son, who is a firefighter in New York; a small town, that is struggling to provide for a sudden influx of people; and the high tensions that naturally result from thousands of stressed people being cramped up together. I very rarely cry at shows, but was borderline-sobbing at this musical because their stresses and pains felt so believable.
If you’re like my mom, and you enjoy heartwarming tales of people coming together, you’ll love this show. If you’re like my dad, and you enjoy good storytelling, you’ll love this show. If you’re like me, and you just love musicals, you’ll love this show. I honestly cannot recommend it enough. 10/10

ROCK OF AGES
so this one is a jukebox musical with a bunch of 80's rock music - I performed in it back in middle school and I've loved it every since. I feel like it's got that same sort of funny transition into songs that you see with moulin rouge while still having a more serious story to it. I think you'll like it especially considering you also listen to rock! I liked it because of how they interpreted a lot of the music, it was really interesting when I first listened through it (the ad libs in this one are so fun <33)
the movie is pretty good, too! Tom cruise gets quite a bit of hate for this one, but I kind of feel like he fit the role pretty well, actually! Julianne Hough is super good in it too! I feel like she's really good at playing the innocent-turned-bad-girl role (like in Grease Live!!). it pretty goofy, though (but let’s be for real that’s my favorite part about movie musicals)
here are some of my favs from the cast recording:
(one from the movie, too!!)
ps: thank you soso much for the kind words, it means a lot! let me know what you think of this one <33

Hey guys! here are some alternatives for wilbur soot and/or lovejoy!
Joe Goldsmith - Lead guitarist/backing vocalist for lovejoy, has his own solo career with amazing music similar to lovejoy (I want to clarify the one I linked in the comments is NOT the Joe we’re talking about here! Im so sorry about that!)
James marriott - Amazing vocals and catchy tunes! He's also a commentary youtuber
Cavetown - Pretty similar to lovejoy, lots of good vocals
Ricky Montgomery - Easy to listen to, has lots of quiet catchy songs
The Strokes - Indie rock band with instrumentals a lot like lovejoy + very nice vocals
The Fairways - Less well-known indie band with calm vocals and similar instrumentals
Fish in a birdcage - Modern renaissance indie band with amazing instrumentals
Los Campensinos - Lovejoy/wilbur has covered a lot of songs by them! Very catchy and great to sing along to
Beach Bunny - Rock band, very catchy and great to sing to
Bully - Probably the most like lovejoy. Great instrumentals and amazing vocals
Neon trees - Great angry music, loud big instrumentals
Arctic monkeys - Calmer, great vocals and easy to sing to

Reminds me so much of 80s terry I can’t get enough
Like I said, Lana's whole discography sounds like an elaborate soundtrack for Terry Silver's life.
