Adding a tangent to the dangerous 'guard dog' trope post, I just want to say what drew me to Halbrand and Galadriel, and what turned out to be Sauron and Galadriel, was this very trope — he followed her guidance, her lead, even if her ideas were insane and he knew it. He had every intention, it seemed, of staying in Númenor. But this Elf, this crazy, determined Elf, gnashing at the teeth, convinced him to take a ship and follow her back to Middle-earth, "the one place I swore never to return," and he went there, anyway. At her insistence. At her beck and call.
If Galadriel had said yes to Sauron, she would have had him wrapped so tight around her finger, he would have served her — not the other way around, mind you. She would have never served him. She would have been a Queen, and he would have been her guard dog — just like he was Melkor's guard dog first, a master whom he served with the utmost brutal, dogged loyalty. He would have given the same to Galadriel and nothing less.
Hot take: Sauron thought he found another master to serve before Galadriel denied his proposal, and so he chose to become the master himself — a fallen lieutenant, foaming at the mouth like a rabid dog with no master's hand to guide him, transforming into a Dark Lord.

You know, with all the "Nuwa is basically MK's mom" takes going around, I would like to call attention to 4x06, where MK was specifically described as "As simple creature—with no past, no family, and no name." By that point in 4x06 we had already gotten that flash of Nuwa, giving the implication that MK was created with the intent of being that blank slate with no family—not even finding a familial relationship in his creator. I'm mainly pointing this out to posit why I think MK will not be focused on finding "his real family" next season, you know. Like even in 4x08 when he says "You have scary demon ancestors? That just means you have family, you come from somewhere—I don't have a family, I don't have anything." I think that comes from a place of being so distraught over his mysterious origins and his "destiny". It's also set-up, so that Pigsy calling MK "son" later in 4x10 has some impact. It's Pigsy saying directly to MK "I'm you're family, you have me" in contrast to his hesitation at the beginning of 4x05. And you know? MK's happy with that, his friends (or more aptly, his family) are his main driving motivation. They're what he cares most about in the world, and what he does moving forward is going to be for them.

I'm sorry to everyone saying that the ai willy wonka experience is dashcon 2 because it is not. There wasn't even a genuine effort here. There were no Homestucks. Nightvale didn't cancel. And there was no ballpit. This is funny, don't get me wrong. But it's no where near the wild build up and pure incredible hilarity of Dashcon. Tomorrow the AI Willy Wonka experience will be as forgotten as all the other AI creation out there. In years to come, we will still be blogging about Dashcon.

I watched Wish and The Boy and the Heron back to back. I’ll keep the thoughts brief, but they couldn’t be more far apart. After learning of Elemental’s personal influence, I wished desperately for an animation being used as it should’ve been - a medium where you can shape anything to tell your wildest fantasies. It’s one of the closest things to magic we have.
Wish had no story. Maybe a story of the nostalgia of Disney, but swallowed and spit out. The Boy and the Heron was poetry in visual form. Not everyone is going to get it or vibe with it, but this is how animation should be used. At least more often than it has been.

Gonna just throw this out into the nether really quick because someone needs to know.
IF YOU ARE THINKING OF WATCHING THE ONE PIECE LIVE ACTION NETFLIX ADAPTATION THEN TAKE MY ADVICE AND DO IT.
I'm going to start by saying I am not an anime fan. I don't have the focus to get into it. It's like people saying they want to get into tabletop games or knitting. It's a huge undertaking that I don't generally have time or patience for. And it's just not my jam for the most part.
But. That being said. A friend of mine insisted I watch the live action One Piece. So the other night when I was matching almost a hundred pairs of socks — because I do my laundry like a sociopathic goblin — and bored out of my mind, I turned it on and binged the whole thing in two sittings.
I was stunned.
It was so good. It married the ridiculous design and logic/physics of anime with hardcore action scenes to make a wholly engrossing story and entertaining ride.
I laughed, I cried, I gasped.
The acting is excellent, the set designs and costuming are excellent, the actors and their chemistry with one another is excellent. It's ridiculous but in a way that just seems... believable.
Stretchy little twerp kid who got his powers by eating some weird alien Satan fruit? Yeah, that seems legit.
Shirtless conquistador bounty hunter that fights with a sword taller than he is? No, yeah, I can dig it.
Green-haired emo samurai alcoholic who fights with THREE SWORDS? ONE HELD IN HIS MOTHER-LICKING MOUTH? YEAH. I CAN ACCEPT THAT.
Psycho killer clown pirates? Well why not?
Somehow these people made a live action anime adaptation that doesn't just destroy my suspension of disbelief. Because it is internally consistent and on every level of design and execution it is well rounded. And yet it deals with some really heavy stuff without taking itself too seriously.
They aren't trying to shove it down your throat either, tying you to your grandmother's wicker rocking chair and force feeding you this story like "LOOK WE ARE DOING SUCH A GOOD JOB."
They fit so much in such a short time and yet it doesn't feel cheap or rushed.
Where the hell has this kind of passion rendition been for all those brilliant books, mangas, animated series, etc that we've been begging for?
That is all. Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk. Watch it.

Perhaps he wouldn't fucking say that but perhaps this meme has become so overused that it discourages writers from putting their works out in the first place or from deviating from what they know in order to try something new

So, I'm dropping in this fan translated panel because it is the first character moment in the TbTP arc. And, I find Aizen's first interaction with Hirako super fascinating.  Also, the official English translation reads a bit differently.  I have the VIZ tankoban at my elbow, so I'll do a bit of compare and contrast. (Actually, I grabbed a screenshot off my VIZ subscription, so here's the other one, as well:)
Tumblr media
Hirako, on the previous page says in the fan translation: "What the? Those are your normal clothes?" in the official translation, he says, "Hey, you aren't dressed up."
Catching up to the fan translation here, he says something far more interesting in the official translation: "It's a festival. I told you to look dazzling."
I'm kind of grooving on Hirako wanting Aizen to look dazzling because the implication is that he thinks he could.
In the official one, their teasing reads a bit differently. Instead of saying "You can't try and make me wear some silly costume when I'll be the only one," Aizen says, "I won't let you make me look a fool."
Their argument about whether a formal ceremony is the same as a festival goes much the same, but instead of "I beg to differ," Aizen just says "No."
I love both versions, but my ideal one would combine some of the more juicer bits, like the "dazzling" comment and Aizen's more Aizen-like responses, like the much more terse, "You can't make me into a fool," and my beloved, simple, "No."
Like, it takes some balls to just say "No" to your captain, even if you add the 'sir.'
Shinji: "It's a festival. You dress for festivals, right?"
Aizen: "A festival isn't a ceremony."
Shinji: "C'mon, it's basically the same."
Aizen: "No."
And, just sitting on that no, like, fight me. But also with no heat, so there's no fight to have. Just, no. You're wrong, Captain, and I'm just saying it.
It's stuff like this that really gets me thinking about how much of "nice" Aizen is really just people not wanting to read him for who he is. He just said, "no," and fucking left it there, but all of fandom is like, "He's SO different when he's evil!" and I'm like, "But, is he?" Like he smiles more, but he literally is just saying, "I won't let you make me your fool," and "No" without any pretense of being "nice.'

I need you to settle a years-long argument between me and my cousin!
Is ketchup allowed on Mac n Cheese?
I say no but she says yes, we have fought about it since we were eight
Hahaha, I actually don't eat mac and cheese on any regular basis. I didn't grow up eating it, but I've had it a few times at restaurants / friends' houses.
... I can imagine it tasting pretty alright, if I ever thought of trying it. XD Does that mean I think it's
allowed?
I don't know, that's entirely up to you. I don't feel like the expert or authority figure you should be looking to for settling this argument.
Sorry I couldn't be more help! Lol.

Tell us a secret headcanon, if you have one (embarrassing, hot take, thing fandom would dislike etc)
Oh Haladriel/Saurondriel girlies, get ready because you’ll HATE this one. Ready? Ready?
Sauron is bad at sex. He’s spent some hot ages being busy doing evil, receives this random human body and is like “wtf? I have to JERK IT? Like a fucking animal?” He doesn’t liiiiiike it. He wants to be able to focus on evil but now he sees a nice ass and the blood flow isn’t going to his brain like it should! Definitely doesn’t like that either - you see… it’s Sauron… he likes control. What can be worse than losing control in this manner?!
Anyhow, just don’t expect him to be a Marquis De Sade with that attitude 🤷‍♀️

Back with another review :)
I read 19 days.
My opinion:
Wowie, I really enjoyed it tbh. It was overall a good read and watching the fruity teens develop was one of the most entertaining things to ever exist. Is it because I am a fruity teen who can relate, probably but nonetheless I couldn't reccomend it more.
Something slightly off putting us the art style. No hate to the creator in any way shape or form , I'm honestly just nitpicking here. Every time I saw the boys, I automatically thought stick man. Bro what are those fingers, gonna put a taranchulas leg to shame. And why the legs a mile long. Slender man?
Anyway, 10/10 . Go read
