“Doesn’t it ache?” I ask him, sitting at that dusty, dim table.

He takes a moment to think before replying, “It does. Love is a dagger, after all.”

“Then why don’t we let go?”

“Perhaps we like bleeding.”

I think about what he said for a moment. “We can never leave this table, can we?”

“I wouldn’t say never.” He smiles. “It just might take a while.”

I watch someone look at him from a table away. A smiling man, dressed in a suit and tie, waiting for him with a bouquet of roses. His eyes speak of honesty and admiration.

As my table mate stands up, ready to join his companion, I reach out for him, gripping his hand. “Loki?”

He turns back. “Yes?”

“How do I let go?”

Loki gives my hand a gentle squeeze. “You’ll have to figure that out on your own.”

As I’m left alone at that dusty table, I think about what Loki said. He’s at another table now, laughing and holding hands with that smiling man. They’re happy. They’re together. Connected. 

We were at the same table once, both waiting for our people to arrive. Women who didn’t care for us. He’s moved on from his, and I’m stuck waiting for mine. Stuck, longing, waiting to ache from a love that is returned rather than a love unrequited.

I realize that love is a dagger. My lover plunged it into my abdomen, and I twisted it when she left. I use it to carve out my heart. I wring out all affection and use it as ink in my songbooks, praying that it’ll stop coming back.

And yet, like a cancer, my love only comes back, again and again. A tumor that manages to spread this horrid curse throughout my body. The sickness spreads to my lungs, my brain, my heart, my knees. Love is lonely when your love leaves. I long to stand and leave this table, but my legs are too weak to walk away.
