Well, I don't know. I mean... I mean, for me, I could love someone even if I, you know, wasn't paid for it... I love you, and... you don't pay me

"I have to turn you away."
Tumblr media

“River Phoenix wrote the campfire scene in private, on little scraps of paper. Gus Van Sant was under the impression that he had been writing song lyrics, and was surprised when River told him he'd re-written the scene. Van Sant liked what River presented, but didn't know if Keanu Reeves would be up for it. River assured him that he'd already privately talked to Keanu about it, and he was fine with everything. Gus Van Sant says he had to give complete faith to River, since he was completely left out of the loop on the whole scene”
“River Phoenix was absent from the New York City premiere of the film. He disliked flying, and traveled mostly everywhere by car or train. Attempting to drive from his hometown in Florida to New York City, he didn't leave himself enough time, and was still making the journey as the premiere took place without him.”
“In the first café scene, the song that can be heard playing in the background is "Too Many Colors" by River Phoenix's band, Aleka's Attic.”
“Keanu Reeves drew on his encounters with street kids in Toronto for his character of Scott. He saw many of them were living on the street to be cool, rather than because of any social or economical problems in their lives.”
“River Phoenix was a big fan of The Simpsons (1989) and suggested its inclusion. Simpsons creator Matt Groening is from Portland, and in fact Gus Van Sant was living in what used to be his best friend's house. Matt let them use the footage from The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror (1990) for free.”
“The campfire scene was the last scene filmed, at the insistence of River Phoenix.”
“River Phoenix talked about the sex scene between Keanu Reeves and Chiara Caselli. "Keanu was filmed naked with the beautiful Chiara. That scene was really a drag. He was having a great time with this girl, but it was freezing cold and they were dying. So I think they were more worried about the temperature than the nudity. That took five hours.”
"River Phoenix was born in Madras, Oregon, only 15 miles from some of the outdoor locations used in the film."

"I had a scene with River Phoenix and he was sitting on the back of a motorcycle that I was driving while we were filming. It wasn't extracurricular, but we went off the beaten path a bit and came back and no helmets. Just two friends playing. It was a really good day."
