Noita
Noita is a magical action roguelite set in a world where every pixel is physically simulated. Fight, explore, melt, burn, freeze and evaporate your way through the procedurally generated world using spells you've created yourself.
Everything burns and sticks and tries to kill you while you figure out if the new combination of spells won't erase you and everything around you with a click or teleport you into a lava lake or launch a spinning blade that comes back at you nine out of ten times or angers the gods and summons the thing or electrocutes you or summons a black hole or <I haven't even finished the game yet, I'm getting there>.

Slam Digging (Beta Only):
Tumblr media
Max Durability: 14 (Can dig through all materials) Radius: 15 or 30 Mana cost: 5 mana every 5 frames (using the recoil spell) Danger: Player-safe. Examples:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Short version. If you hit something when moving fast enough, it's destroyed. Detailed explanation below:
Basically the game checks Mina's speed every 5 frames, and if the distance traveled between those frames is large enough, it starts playing the "speed" sound cue, and showing the speed line visual effect. After a certain length of time in this state, if Mina collides with a solid material, an explosion sound will play, and a circle of material will be destroyed, and the timer will reset. It seems that the explosion can happen multiple frames in a row (up to 5?) before the timer is reset leading to a slightly longer hole than expected and probably also explains why the sound is so damn loud. There are two hole sizes that can result purely based on the timer, more time flying means that the larger radius of 30 will be used. Less time flying results in a radius 15 hole, or no hole at all. There are two methods I have found to achieve sufficient speed:
Teleporting using teleport bolt or small teleport bolt. Nolla and long-distance cast are not necessary, although they can help reduce cast delay. I don't know if it's possible to use the more niche methods of teleportation like Return, Swapper, or Homebringer to achieve ram digging.
Recoil ramming requires atleast 80 recoil to work if fired every single frame, or atleast 100 recoil if fired every 5th frame. The cheapest option is Recoil on a digging bolt (5 mana for 200 recoil), for a more controllable flight, two Heavy Shot spells or three bloodlusts also work and are relatively cheap mana-wise. some projectiles have enough innate recoil like Ball Lightning and Lightning Bolt also work if you can afford the mana cost every 5 frames. A more complete list of all spells that interact with recoil can be found here.
It's paradoxically easiest to use Ramming to dig when moving slower (around 100 recoil, or nolla small teleport bolt), both because it's easier to aim your flight at lower speeds, and because you don't need to fly as far away to have the necessary flight time to trigger the effect. Ultimately this digging method is very niche because it's very slow and hard to aim, and there's an inherent limit on how fast you can dig with it due to the requirement of moving at sufficient speed for a certain length of time.

[Noita] Analysis: Death is tired of waiting
Roguelike games are usually defined by a few things.
You lose your current items/stats when you die
Items/stats are randomized each run
A "True roguelike" will not allow you to gain any progress after a run beyond just knowledge and experience but that usually makes the game worse. In the games where it does not get worse, they will usually have minimal randomness, to encourage and reward skilled gameplay, for a "Positive feedback Loop."
However we are not playing a good, fair, or even a fun game today; We are playing Noita. (About 22 CAD on steam and it goes on ~25% sale semi-frequently.)
Tumblr media
Noita is known for 3 things: Realistic simulation, Logic gates for dummies, and Nightmarish RNG. Also, it's mostly in finnish. Let me explain.
The "Main Premise" of Noita is that you are a wizard with wands. You have 4 wand slots and start with 2, which have spell slots of their own, and 4 item slots, for potions (You start with one) and magical rocks and what-have-you.
Tumblr media
You must progress down through the 7 circles of RNG Hell while picking up wands/items/spells and re-arrange them at checkpoints to make them better, till you find and kill the final boss at the bottom. This sounds simple at first but it is anything but.
Firstly, the simulation. It operates on a unique engine ("Falling Everything" engine) meaning EVERY PIXEL is simulated. One pixel of lava burns you to death, for starters. But more realistically, yes, the enemies and environments in this game work very "Lifelike."
Tumblr media
The enemy you just froze can shatter into pieces. That fire-spirit enemy? Water instakills him. Your laser drill wand? Literally slices bitches in half , then you can bathe in their blood and eat their corpse. All of this is the gospel truth.
Tumblr media
Now, add onto that the "logic gate" method of spells.
Say you have Double spell + spark bolt in that order. Firing that wand will cast 2 sparks at once.
Now add a trigger onto it, it fires a spark that explodes into two.
Now do it again. One fires two fires four.
Now replace that last spark bolt, with "Thunder Explosion."
This wand will fire a (1) Accelerated (2) Spark bolt, that explodes into (3) Two different spells, which are both (4,5) Thunder explosion.
Tumblr media
And that just about explains the final part of this game, the RNG.
This game will try to kill you without a pause. It is not uncommon to be instantly blown up at any time, or fire a new wand and instantly die. This is less of a roguelike and more of a survival horror game.
Notice that my best gold count is "Infinite", my death/win ratio is 909/2.
Tumblr media
Live, get a new spell, die. Get to a new biome next time, Die. Next time, die even faster, and with no counterplay, because RNG hates you more than you have EVER seen.
Only after you use every ounce of experience you gained over the last 100 runs can you begin to play the game past 10 minutes. And for good reason, this game is LUDICROUSLY easy to break. It is also not uncommon to get 3 trash tier spells that, when combined, nuke the entire screen. (Laser drill + Recharge faster + Add mana) But you will never, ever, escape the icy grip of RNG'S vengeance.
Noita is a game where you can lose it all to anything at any time, like other games. UNLIKE other games, that is a feature, not a bug. An intended design. Embrace it. No, you couldn't have played better, you were MEANT to die. And when you accept that, and live to die, this game is insanely fun.
Tumblr media
The map stretches infinitely in every direction. EVERYTHING in the world is destructible. There is actual content to unlock for future runs, tons of secrets, and some hilariously obscene combos, half of which are designed to kill you.
Tumblr media
So give Nolla games your money and prepare for the most nightmarish, demonic, painful, 10/10 experience of your life.
"Fuck this game! Alright one more run." - Noita players
Final rating is 9.5/10. Do not buy it if you get tilted easily, do not like roguelikes, or are dumber than a brick. Do buy it if you like Replayability, Hilariously unfair RNG, Hard games, or breaking games beyond repair.

fuck. i hate but also love that noita both punishes and rewards greediness heavily. the choice presented by the mere presence of finding the teleporter being "play it saife and go forward with the wands/money you currently have (which might not be enough for the wand(s)/spell(s) you want from the holy mountain) or deciding that you have enough hp left to risk everything by continuing to explore further and hoping that you can either make it back to that teleporter or find a different one after you've picked up more resources but before you die, and oftentimes during runs i'll find myself just camping out by the teleporter for minutes weighing the pros and cons of progressing now vs trying to find upgrades that outweigh the cost of further exploration. i feel like there's a lot here for me to unpack and internalize in terms of game balance, even (especially, even) if i decide that the way i'd want to balance my own games turns out to be significantly different from what nolla decided on

How you are supposed to play Noita: Mix substances to get different reactions! Use the environment to your advantage! Use your spells strategically!
How I play Noita: Shoot random spells haphazardly at the monsters while panicking and crying. Sometimes things around me explode and I don’t understand why.
One thing that feels very personal to me about this game is that it’s very Finnish, and while I am not Finnish, I have an OC who I relate to very strongly who is a wannabe indie game dev from Finland. She’s also very inspired by magic and folklore, which this game is centered around. The guys at Nolla Games are probably her heroes.

Summon Explosive Box

Durability Test:
Tumblr media

Top left gif is an early game example of using explosive boxes to dig. Since they don't naturally expire they need to be detonated by some other means. Top right gif is an example of how upwards larpa interacts with explosive boxes. I don't know why it exploded. Would have been a lot of damage if I was nearby. Bottom gif shows a late-game build with nolla large explosive boxes on a sparkbolt trigger. Also note how little terrain darkening explosive boxes cause.
