Gomer Pyle Blu-Ray Box Set Review

Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.— The Complete Series includes all five seasons of the classic sitcom. This 20 disc set will provide hours of entertainment and laughter.

This hit spin-off from The Andy Griffith Show took one of the hilarious side characters, Gomer, and set a fresh new show around him that would exceed the hilarity which started in way back in Mayberry, North Carolina.

I still rank this comedy in my all-time top 10 list. The naive, but loveable country boy Gomer (Jim Nabors) and loudmouthed Sergeant Carter (Frank Sutton) play incredibly well off each other. This is probably the 20th time I've watched most of these classic episodes and I still gleefully appreciate the comedic genius of this old tv show.

The series is presented in HD for the first time in this 20 disc Blu-Ray set. The first season is in black and white with the rest in beautiful color. The transfer is solid and crisp, especially in season 2-5. Actors and actresses faces and overall presentation have never looked so delightfully clear. You'll even notice set pieces and landscapes in the background like never before. It's amazing when you realize these episodes are over 60 years old. Although this is presented in a 4x3 aspect ratio, it never hinders your appreciation for this series.

VIDEO QUALITY 📽️ : B+

For only a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track the sound is actually quite pleasant. It might be because I long enjoyed these episodes on an old picture tube television for years without complaining, but I can not find anything wrong with the mono mix here. I am also aware that not all of the music originally found from this series made it to this release sadly due to rights of usage.

AUDIO QUALITY 🔈 : B-

As far as the extras go, there aren't many (see below). There are also no dvds or digital copies available with this set either. While the disc extras here aren't numerous, I can understand that more than the lack of digital copies for the episodes.

Season One, Disc One:

Pilot Episode "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. from The Andy Griffth Show (480i, 28:09): The episode that debuted the character and concept. Includes the option to play the episode alone or with the "Sales Presentation" which is also included separately (see the next supplement below).

Sales Presentation (480i, 2:39): Jim Nabors introduces and closes out the episode, as is optionally seen with the episode above.

Season One, Disc Two:

Audio Commentary: Ronnie Schell, who played "Duke" on the show, discusses the first episode on the disc, "Gomer and the Dragon Lady."

EXTRAS 📀 : D

FINAL GRADE: B-

Clocking in at 3786 minutes, this is one box set that viewers both young and old can sit around and savor together for literally hours and hours. Even with the lack of extras here, this release gets my 100% recommendation. They don't make them (comedies) like this anymore.

Mixing an Old Anime Dub with HD Footage

How I'm trying to mix every episode of the old FUNimation English dub of Detective Conan/Case Closed with the new remastered footage currently being released on Blu-ray in Germany.

This is less of a tutorial and more of a, "I-don't-really-know-what-I'm-doing-but-this-is-my-process" sort of thing. I welcome suggestions for improvements! Many thanks go to Fabre on the Detective Conan EN Community Discord server for getting me here at all; my earlier method of mixing, requiring me to cut the audio a bajillion times, is definitely not recommended.

Since I just posted a clip from Episode 76—thank you for the warm response!—I'll demo here with Episode 77! It's the start of a Heiji case!

Programs

Every program I use is free (though some have paid options available). These programs are:

MakeMKV, for ripping Blu-rays and DVDs

HandBrake, for ripping DVDs and compressing files

BeHappy, for audio conversion

DaVinci Resolve, for video editing

Subtitle Edit, for exactly what it says on the tin

Getting the Materials

To rip the Detektiv Conan Blu-rays, I use MakeMKV. (Note that the file size will be very large.) I also try to use MakeMKV to rip the FUNimation Case Closed DVDs, but there can be struggles. With Seasons 4 and 5 of the Viridian Collection, for example, not all episodes would rip without a lot of finagling. In that situation, it's easier to use HandBrake instead, making sure to select a FLAC codec for lossless compression of the audio.

Audio Conversion

With Detective Conan, the Case Closed DVDs have an audio "framerate" of 24 FPS, but the Detektiv Conan Blu-rays have an FPS of 23.976. They've gotta match for easy mixing. The way I fix the discrepancy is to convert the FUNi audio to 23.976 FPS, which can be done with BeHappy:

I use WAV Writer for a lossless conversion, and I've learned to select the "Normalize to 100%" option because I've had strangely low audio levels otherwise (as can sadly be heard in my Episode 76 clip).

(Also, one of my biggest struggles with BeHappy was how to even get the job going. So, putting it out there for anyone else who might need it: to get the conversion started, you gotta click that "Enqueue" button on the bottom right. It is indeed a button!)

I use FFAudioSource, and with the "Configure..." button on the far right of that, I can select the stream index to convert. (For many of the FUNimation volumes, Stream Index 1 is English stereo, Stream Index 2 is Japanese stereo, and Stream Index 3 is English surround sound.)

My mixing process involves lining up the Japanese audio of the FUNimation DVD with the Japanese audio from the German Blu-ray; then, I copy any movements or cuts to the English audio. So, I convert both the English and Japanese audio tracks from the FUNimation DVD.

But this is unnecessary. You can also line up the dub with the Blu-ray audio directly. I just don't trust myself to do that because they're not going to match up exactly due to the different languages.

Resolve can also have trouble importing the audio from my Blu-rays, so I BeHappy that audio as well, just making sure not to select the "TimeStretch" option.

Video Editing

The mixing isn't too complicated. Like I said above, it's about matching the Japanese audio tracks of the DVD and the Blu-ray. I solo the Japanese audio track from the Blu-ray, mark the starting point of a sound, and then I repeat the process with the Japanese audio track from the DVD and line up the markers (and solo both Japanese audio tracks together to make sure they're properly synced). Anything changed on the Japanese audio track from the DVD is copied to the English audio track(s).

Rinse and repeat. Timings generally need to be checked at transition points: the opening, doors, ending, post-credits, next-episode previews, and "Next Conan's Hint" segments. The Blu-rays also have blank sponsor screens and end-card jokes that aren't included on the DVDs, and I fill these spaces by either editing in the English version of the song that plays during the sponsor screen, or by simply copying the Japanese audio from the Blu-ray for content that wasn't dubbed.

There are some more nitty-gritty details involved with openings. For OP 1, I edit in the full English version of the song from Episode 1, while for OP 2, which wasn't dubbed (with OP 1 played instead on the DVDs), I use AI vocal isolation to isolate the audio of Shinichi's opening speech and edit that with the Japanese song. For OP 3, no full English version of "Nazo" exists, so I just kind of have to awkwardly splice in the Japanese version at the end during the sponsor screen.

Of course, this is a lot of extra effort that even the German Blu-rays don't do for the German dub. Songs and intros are entirely left in Japanese there, vastly simplifying this work. But I definitely want to preserve the English songs. And also, I love making things harder for myself.

Subtitles

Finally, I'm all about subtitles! Some of the FUNimation volumes include English dub subtitles, which I like to include on my final mix.

To extract them from the DVD, I use Subtitle Edit. I go to File -> Import -> Subtitle from video file...

The file does have to be an .mkv, which can be made with MakeMKV or HandBrake.

Once I select the file (in this case Episode 77), I use these settings to OCR the subtitles:

I make sure to have "Prompt for unknown words" checked because OCR (Optical Character Recognition) isn't a perfect process and may make mistakes.

"How's it goin (TM)" is pretty great, though, ngl.

I run through the OCR and fix anything that's needed. Since the FUNimation subtitles are a little hard to read, I also try to quality check them thoroughly for errors—though, I usually do that after the next step, which is timing the subtitles to the remastered mix.

Much like the BeHappy process, I want to start by changing the framerate of the subtitles from 24 FPS to 23.976 FPS. This can be done by going to Synchronization -> Change frame rate...

After that, I can attach the remastered video file and time much like I did with the video editing. I go to Synchronization -> Adjust all times (show earlier/later)... and click the "Selected and subsequent lines" option at all of the transition places that need adjusting. It definitely helps to have the waveform on when timing.

I also like to attach Crunchyroll subtitles for the more literal translation of the original Japanese script. The .ass files can be found here. Crunchyroll subtitles are timed very closely to the Blu-rays; all that needs to be done is a second or so of delay at the start. I also OCR the German subtitles from the Blu-ray and use those to time the Crunchyroll subs, but it's just as effective to use the waveform and/or your ear to time them.

And speaking of Crunchyroll subs, I like to copy their formatting for my OCR'd subs. To do this, I first need to export the Crunchyroll styles, which can be done by opening the Crunchyroll subtitle file in Subtitle Edit and clicking the big "A" by the checkmark for "Advanced Sub Station Alpha styles."

The following menu will pop up, and from there, I just have to click the "Export" button to save the styles.

After that, I have to change the .srt file of the OCR'd subs into an .ass file by opening that file and selecting "Advanced Sub Station Alpha (.ass)" on the "Format" drop-down menu.

Then, I again click the big "A" by the checkmark for "Advanced Sub Station Alpha styles" and hit the "Import..." button on the menu to import the Crunchyroll styles. I delete the original "Default" style afterwards and rename the Crunchyroll default from "Default 2" to "Default."

And that's basically it! There are some things I kind of glossed over; for example, I have to assign buses in video editing to get all the different audio tracks the way I want, and I do have to add subtitle lines to the English dub subs to get subs for things that weren't on DVD. But this is the basic process of preparing the video and subtitles.

Compression

The last step is compressing with HandBrake. I wind up with ginormous file sizes after exporting from Resolve, and it's nice to get something smaller. Plus, with HandBrake, I can also attach all my subtitle files to the video.

To do so, I just need to pop over to the "Subtitle" tab and select "Import Subtitle" on the "Tracks" drop-down menu.

The subs can even be named. I keep mine soft so that they can be toggled on or off, but they can certainly be burned in, too, if that's preferred.

Compression settings are utterly beyond me, unfortunately; my file sizes are still ginormous even after HandBraking. But there are several presets on the program that can be used.

And that's really the whole process!

Note that I use the German Blu-rays, despite their shortcoming of the name boxes being edited in a way that can't be turned off, because there are no other Blu-ray releases of this remastered material at the moment. Maybe one day I'll write a post about all the Detective Conan available on BD—it's surprisingly little!—but this is it for now!

big old wordy post for anyone wanting to get into the layton series and support it in a slightly more legal manner loool

first off, the Original Trilogy. probably the easiest option is purchasing the first 3 games on mobile. yes, these are the full games that debuted on the DS but in HD with BONUS content.

oh hey katrielle and alfendi. i guess mystery journey and mystery room are there too but i'll get back to those.

anyways, the layton series comes in different parts with some spinoffs. the first three as seen are Curious Village, Diabolical Box and Unwound Future. these are first in order of Release. so you can't go wrong starting here.

the next three that came after are the Prequel trilogy: Last Specter, Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy. this means even though they were released later, they take place before Curious Village chronologically. so maybe you want to make LS a starting point if you like that sort of order? LS was the last layton game for the DS while MM and AL were for the 3DS. this is where it gets difficult.

currently, Last Specter has no other port. if you search on something like ebay, you will see a clear price difference compared to listings for the original DS trilogy. and with renewed interest in the series, the amount of ppl looking for copies has probably grown too. so i don't recommend joining the fight unless you really love layton and physical media lol. i still probably RecOMmend finding another way to play it.

also my fav part of Last Specter is London Life!! a game within a game where you can create an avatar, dress up, decorate your room, get a job, fish, meet characters from the past 3 games (and a couple from Eternal Diva!) HOWEVER, London Life is only available in versions for Japan, US and Australia. if you have a European copy, you won't see it... so keep this in mind...

but before you get to the 3DS titles, you should watch the movie i mentioned earlier. what, a movie? YES! Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva! released in 2009 and takes place between Last Specter and Miracle Mask. it's animated in the game's style and comes with subs and dubs. you can easily look it up on youtube.

okay now you can move on to 3DS. Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy are available digitally in 3DS eshop but that is CLOSING MARCH 27 2023. physical copies are also expensive to acquire. they currently do not have mobile ports either.

there's another 3DS title available as well and it's a wild one. Professor Layton Vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney! a crossover spinoff where you get to enjoy the gameplay of both series and the work done here would later influence some stuff they did in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles so you can check that out too. but i rec this title if you are already a fan of PL and AA so you can get the most out of the experience. if you hope to get this physically, be aware it's an extremely expensive hassle. otherwise, just grab it from the 3DS eshop for $29.99 before it closes or brew up another method at home.

okay okay but what about Mystery Journey? well, the protagonist this time is Prof Layton's daughter Katrielle! her game's available on 3DS and mobile (with free demo) and there are extra purchases if you want more goodies. but you may want to consider the switch version instead. it comes with all DLC unlocked, extra outfits and nicer graphics. it also has some new and improved puzzles. why is that? well, some of the puzzles in the original release weren't popular. if you try out the mobile demo, you may notice a totally different vibe with the puzzles. well, why is That? sadly, the original puzzle master for the layton games passed away in 2016. Mystery Journey is a more divisive title so maybe don't make this your first layton adventure.

BUT WAIT! there's also a Mystery Journey anime you can watch! Layton Mystery Tanteisha: Katori no Nazotoki File! it goes through the events from Mystery Journey and MORE! yes, the story goes BEYOND the game!! it's only available in japanese though (but there are subs lol)

HOLD IT! there's one more mobile game to talk about. Layton Brothers: Mystery Room! this time, you follow Lucy Baker, a fresh detective constable assigned to assist Inspector Alfendi Layton, son of Prof Layton. this game is less about puzzles and more about investigation and interrogation. it's a freemium game, which means the prologue and first 2 cases are free. the rest of the cases are in-app purchases.

if you've already played all these games, well congrats! now we just sit here and wait for New World of Steam

(and keep praying for Mansion of the Deathly Mirror lol)

I have no plans to see Oppenheimer. Here's why:

To begin with, the last film directed by Christopher Nolan that I saw was Dunkirk, and I enjoyed that in spite of two important things: the sound design, which was realistically noisy but got in the way of, y'know, intelligible dialogue; and Hans Zimmer's derivative, repetitive score (seriously it was just the chord progression from the "Nimrod" section of Elgar's Enigma Variations, over and over and over again. And both won Oscars! What the actual fuck?)

More to the point, though: this is not exactly an undertold story — quite the opposite, in fact. It has already had (at least) two dramatizations that can be described as essential. Here's some information about one of them.

This was a major departure for Masterpiece Theatre at that time. Sadly, it doesn't seem to be available for streaming anywhere.

The other one can be streamed at the link below, although it may be blocked outside the U.S.

It's a definitive performance of this work, which is by John Adams and Peter Sellars; through July 28th only, it can also be streamed free of charge and, as far as I know, from anywhere in the world, here:

Around this time last year, Disney had released the entire series of Tangled on Blu-Ray and yet sadly I still don’t have it. It’s still not available in the UK, but I guarantee when the time comes I Will Get It!

One of the main reasons being I just wait to enjoy all my favourite moments between this famous long-lost royal couple in HD!

Hiii it is possible to watch every episode for free! But without a subscription you can’t watch it in HD like you would’ve been able to when it’s free on YouTube lol 🙃 it’s not the worst but it is annoying and a huge part of gmmtv’s appeal is that it’s so readily available on youtube so idk why they’re doing any of this :/

Finally had a chance to go record this: the Dark Urge having dreams on a first rest, if you rest early.

I did a Long Rest with no camp provisions before interacting with any other characters on the beach to get this. I'm not sure how far in you can go and still trigger this cutscene, but I know if you rest before you interact with Shadowheart (or any of the other companions if you bypass her) you'll get it.

Featuring Zaelis (as a cleric of Bhaal).

There are other narrator comments depending on the race you've chosen (Zaelis is a half-elf), for dialogue option 1, and depending on the class you have chosen, for dialogue option 2. I was hoping there might be some hidden Bhaal commentary in here, as there are a LOT of them peppered throughout Act 1 which only trigger if you've got Bhaal flagged on your character, but sadly that was not the case.

Either way, enjoy (HD is available, not sure why the tube wants to automatic it to 360, gross).

Have you seen Michael Almereyda's 1994 vampire movie NADJA? It's the precise midpoint between DAUGHTER OF DRACULA and A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT: a droll, Portishead-fueled, PoMo remake (in B&W) of the 1936 film, with Elina Löwensohn as the daughter of Dracula, Galaxy Craze as her latest conquest, Martin Donovan as the hapless husband, Peter Fonda (!) as Van Helsing, and Jared Harris as Nadja's estranged brother. Sadly not available in HD (soundtrack issues?), but there was a DVD release.

I’ve been wanting to see this for like 20 years! It sounds and looks like something I’d really enjoy.

Confession: I’m *terrible* at watching movies, because I seldom think to watch new ones by myself. So a lot of what I do see is generally the result of bugging someone I know to watch or vice versa. (I also haven’t seen a lot of the movies everyone’s seen.) This is both great because I have so much to look forward to, and terrible because I need to see a million things.

However! I’m gonna bug someone to see this with me soon.

This painting was once believed to be a portrait of Mary Tudor by Hans Holbein the Younger. What are your thoughts on it? The sitter may have had ties to Spain, because the border of her bodice and hood is ornamented with scallop shells, a symbol of St. James, the patron saint of Spain.

I have been wondering about the identity of the sitter in this portrait for while now. Also about the fact that Met Museum has it on its website in HD, you can see every detail, but in black and white only. Like does only photo exists or do they have the painting in colours and won't show us? The colours could give lot of clue(hair colour, eye colour, etc.)

In past it was said to be Mary I by Antonio Moro. However just from glancing at the face, that assumption is put into question.

It'd have to be pretty bad likeness to be actually her. I cannot rule that possibly happened, but it could be also the case it isn't her.

Indeed there are scallops on her bodice and french hood, and their size is fairly matching with those in Catherine of Aragon's portrait by Sittow.

But don't celebrate prematurely. Comparison of both portraits reveals they are not identical. Their shape is different.

However, we know Catherine's jewelry upon her death was taken from her and majority was not given to Mary. It was probably sold or melted down. But Mary upon return to favour could have had comissioned these in order to remember her mother.

But it is also possible that sitter is from circle around Catherine and her spanish ladies(who also could have had aqquired scallop shaped jewels before coming to England)-and that could be many women.

Yet there is also possibility that those scallops have nothing to do with that. (Aside from possibly leading to people assuming this portrait is Mary I, because her mother wore something similiar.)

In my post scallops as symbol I explained the other symbolism of scallops-they also symbolized baptism, were asociated with more religious places and overall became popular during renaissance. Thus potentially anybody could be wearing these.

Imo more likely for sitter to be catholic due to this detail. But not necessarly.

I had look in HD at those details, but sadly I don't see anything which would help us conclusively say who it is.

It's truly madening to have the painting available in such HD(many galleries don't give you that), and yet nothing to go with.

Possibly the ring has some letters upon it, but i can't read it:

However it might be because somebody remove all the clues.

Old photos show it with background overpainted, but also with cross in middle of the chest:

Sadly during one conservation it was removed, and nobody knows if it was indeed later alteration which didn't belong there, or actual feature of the painting which was sadly lost.

Or if more was lost during this conservazion.

Idk if it is just different light used, but hair seems different to me, much lighter in old photos.

Was it overpainted to lighter tones before? Idk. Met Museum provides very little information(aside from provenance) about the painting itself on their webpage. Even this old photo I found on my own.

Only thing they say is:

William Suhr in Paintings Conservation cleaned this portrait in April 1957. He repaired a joint that had opened and removed a dark reddish background to reveal the curtain. The cross that once hung from the brooch on the bodice had, however, already been removed when he received the picture.

The background in the photo doesn't dark at all. So who knows how many alterations that painting went through before 1957.

I had look into Mary's portraits and there is indeed similiarity in features to some of them. Especially lower part of face, in those depictions where her nose is flat:

Flatness issue is due to pigment instability, shadows kind of disappear or are less prominent, giving ilusion of flat nose. Most common it is for Eworth's workshop.

And the painting in question looks like it could be done around same time, possibly by somebody who was part of that workshop. (though so far painting was not atributed to anybody.)

Problem is, workshops can give us drastically different face. And aging or sickness or weight gain can also change features to degree.

Let's look at upper half:

Seemingly no match.

But here tiny bit of hope:

I think what could be misleading is that its pretty uncomon in portraits later in her life to not be looking at viewer. Her pupils look to side in the painting and that can create bit of ilusion that shape of the eye is different.

But imo, it is different shape of eyes and eybrows than Mary had.

However...that can happen with workshop or due to different artist.

(We've seen it many times with eyebrows of Henry VII. Sometimes they are extremely low, sometimes extremely high. )

And ocassionally, you get portrait where painter simply screwed it up. Didn't get the features correct.

The slightly different angle in which head is, also could make features appear to be different.

And as I said the painting was altered in the past, and Met won't tell us if face was also. So potentially somebody changed the upper half of the face. I cannot rule that out.

(I might have to write to them.)

The lower half of face resembles hers, pretty well actually,nose and even eyes are fairly alike. If you compare those features one by one. Not that much together as whole-but that could be artistic mistake or alteration.

IF it isn't mistake-then maybe time to look at somebody else-like cousins of her which could bear resemblence to her.

But at this moment I cannot conclusively either way-if it is or isn't her.

Not together as whole-but So if you asking-it could be her.

I'd truly wish to see this one in colour. Black and white hides a lot.

Oh, I almost forgot-the painting's maximum range of dating would be mid 1540s to early 1550s. However with this shape of hood, I'm more inclined to say 2nd half of 1540s. I hope you enjoyed it.

Update:

It just occured me that there might be addional reason why person might chose to wear those tiny scallops. That their coat of arms have scallops in them.

For example Dacre family:

Thus if we checked coat of arms of all noble families existing in England at right time, then we might narrow down which ladies could potentially choose this symbol.

(But as I said this could also be chosen randomly, not necessarly it has to do with coat of arms.)

I’m having a blast hunting down these commercial and promotional goodies for the games. Honestly quite surprised by the amount of stuff I have managed to find despite their age.

Complete list of the items can be read below ( ˙▿˙ )

1. A DVD for Eternal Diva. Unsure about it’s release no matter how much I google the text on it “レイトン教授ナゾトキx感動”. It seems to contain the whole movie as well, but I have not watched the full thing yet to see if there is any difference. My PC calls it “ Layton Kyouju to Eien no Utahime rental DVD”, but the disc does not match the rental copies I have at home.

2. A clear file that I think was handed out in China to promote the HD release of Curious Villager. Unsure about the release of this one as well.

5. Sadly I missed out on the villan acrylic stand that Hina released last year. Lucky for me they restocked it for the Correct! event so I could finally get one for myself. (After all I need all things that are Clive)

6. A folder? Pamphlet? Unsure what to call this one. It contains info about the first two games, as well as a commercial for Unwound Future.

7. Keychain by Nanashi-a that released during Correct!. Was quite impressed by the size of it, as well as the cute heartshaped hanger.

8. DVD released along with Famitsu Wave back in 2010. It’s kinda funny how it contains not only a trailer for Pandora’s Box, but also FF13, Bayonetta and Monster Hunter, aka some of my closest friends biggest obsessions. There’s something for everyone on it haha.

9. Last but not least a mini soundtrack covering music from several 3DS games. Released in april 2011 for NintendoDREAM, so it’s possible that this one was bundled with one of their issues. It only has two songs from Miracle’s Mask, but since MM does not have an official released OST this is as close as I will get to it.

(This is an ongoing project that I will continuously update as I find more DRM-Free games to recommend) Update: It sadly seems I may not be able to add any more links, I may have reached the limit for one post.

What do I consider "DRM-Free"?

I've seen people argue and nitpick over what they consider DRM-Free on reddit, so I wanted to be sure to clarify. I consider a modern PC game DRM Free if I don't need to be connected to the internet or log into anything to play the game. I don't necessarily mind the older PC games where you have to enter a CD key during installation, even though this could also be considered DRM. WUUUUGHALGBORK! WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH ABOUT DRM?! JUST CONFORM!

I can speak from personal experiences of situations in which case I've been fucked over by DRM: - My steam copy of Cities XL is impossible to play now because it requires a log in account from a site that doesn't exist anymore.

Not too long ago Epic games delisted all the Unreal games from digital store fronts, making them all harder to get a hold of. Unreal Tournament 4 never even got a physical release so it's only even still around thanks to fans saving and fixing up the game files before Epic cut off all access to them.

I was once locked out of playing my own copy of Minecraft for an extended period of time because something got messed up with my login.

Internet died and I was unable to run some of my games because they require constant internet connection to fully function (or function at all). This includes titles such as Killing Floor 2, or Red Dead Redemption 2, or Quake Champions.

The steam version of Quake can be played DRM-Free using the executable "glquake" inside the game's main directory. This version of the game uses an interface more akin to the original, you won't get all the modern bethesda stuff that shows up when you launch the game through steam, so sadly this one is only partially DRM free.

The Sonic & Knuckles Collection is a physical collection from the 90s that contains both a modified version of Sonic & Knuckles and a PC port of Sonic CD. According to the PC Gaming wiki, the only form of DRM should be a disc check, which won't require internet. The newer steam version, (which was delisted in a slimey move by Sega to bully people into buying the newer Sonic Origins) is no longer available for purchase, but if you already have a copy, The PC Gaming Wiki has some instructions on ways to remove the DRM.

NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION 4K RELEASE

Way back in 1983, the now classic comedy, Vacation was released. The story follows Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Chase) as he embarks on a roadtrip with his kids (Anthony Michael Hall, Dana Barron) and wife (Beverly D'Angelo) in the "Family Truckster" from Chicago to the L.A. amusement park Walley World. Along the way, the Griswolds encounter out-of-control cars, an ill-tempered dog, a beautiful model (Christie Brinkley), and hillbilly cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid). Imogene Coca, and John Candy also star as Harold Ramis directs from a script by John Hughes.

VIDEO QUALITY 📽️ : A

If you grew up anywhere during the 80s you probably have seen this hilarious film, and most have viewed it more than once. The great news is that the film has never visually looked any better than on the newly released 4K Blu-Ray. Everything from the beautiful scenery on the Griswold's road trip to the simplicity of their flesh tones look amazing. I own the 30th Anniversary Edition on Blu-Ray and the upscale to 4K is very noticeable.

AUDIO QUALITY 🔈 : C

There's not a whole lot to say about the audio other than it's contains the English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono (48kHz, 24-bit) with options of both French and Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0 (192kbps). The dialogue sounds crisp and easy to understand. Sadly, the music, which consists of Lindsey Buckingham's "Holiday Road" does not include The Pointer Sisters' "I'm So Excited" (still being replaced by June Pointer's "Little Boy Sweet").

EXTRAS 📀 : C-

Except for the commentary (which includes the director, Harold Ramis; actors Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid, Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron; and Producer Matty Simmons) all the bonus features are only available streaming on the Movie Anywhere App. Each special feature has been available on previous releases. And although you're getting a digital copy of the film, which is nice, there is not a basic Blu-Ray copy included.

FINAL GRADE: B+

Although the bonus features are pretty much limited to streaming on the Movies Anywhere app, the newly released transfer of National Lampoon's Vacation is dazzling and should satisfy even the pickiest viewer. It's a legendary comedy presented on the best possible format, and you can't ask for too much more than that.
