Tiny Navajo Reads: Thursday Three Book Blogs I Love
Tiny Navajo Reads: Thursday Three Book Blogs I Love
Hi guys! This is a Thursday Three that I haven’t touched yet, and I’m glad for it. It’s a day for me to talk about three book blogs that I look up to and that inspire me to try better.
Austine @NovelKnight
She was one of the first book bloggers that I started following when I first started writing and publishing my book reviews on this site. And she puts out so content, well written content, and…

I’ve signed up for the Beat the Backlist challenge 2018 hosted by @novelknight and I’m aiming at the moment to read 6 books which are
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman
Night of Cake and Puppets by Laini Taylor
Leviathan by Scott Westerfield
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Zafon
I may well end up reading more backlisted books but considering my reading for uni I think this is a substantial enough list for now.
If anyone else joins in I’m on the Book Bards team so let me know if we’re teammates! Good luck to anyone doing the challenge and enjoy your new year of reading!

2020 Wrap Up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considering I’m a registered nurse working through a global pandemic, 144 is a damn good number and I’m super proud of myself for that accomplishment. I always set my goal for 100 (I’m boring) and I always exceed it so I’m happy with what I read last year. I knocked off quite a few books that had been on my TBR a long time e.g. Dune and Firestarter. I DNF’ed quite a few books, finished a few series, and found some new favorites.
So far I’m on track for my goal (100) for 2021 since I’ve already finished one book and are onto the next. I started reading The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner which has been on my TBR for years. I previously had started it and DNF’ed it but I’m hoping that since my tastes have changed a bit that my mind will change because I’ve heard such good things about it.
Yearly goals are much the same. I’m not participating in the NovelKnight Beat the Backlist Challenge or the PopSugar! challenge but I did set an A-Z Challenge for myself. I never finished that the first year I took a crack at it so here’s hoping I can do it this go around. As always, my goal is to get my physical TBR down but I won’t guilt myself for buying because really, it’s the only thing I treat myself with. I do want to read quite a few things that have been on my TBR for awhile, namely The Inheritance Trilogy and the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemison, The Golden Compass trilogy, and to finish out the series whose last books I’ve been putting out.
This also marks my 3rd year bullet journaling for my reading. I haven’t changed up any of my spreads except adding a ‘Book of the Month’ page for each monthly spread. The goal is to print the cover photo out and paste it in but we’ll see how that goes.

I messed up book tag
Hey there @therefugeofbooks - thanks for tagging, this was fun! My memory is far from great, but all the more reason to shake up my bookish past from time to time...
1. A character’s appearance that you misread and imagined differently.
I'm meticulous when it comes to descriptions - not knowing how to imagine characters bugs me to no end, so I don't recall misreading; however a bunch of times a character's appearance was introduced so late in the story that I had to make up my own image, and needless to say it didn't usually match. One example that comes to mind is the Echo series by Max Frei - it's more like a series of series; the first cycle was entirely from the main character's POV with zero self-description, and when the narrative shifted in the second cycle I realised that was NOT how I imagined him at ALL
2. A character name that you’ve been pronouncing wrong.
Lyra from His Dark Materials! I first read the books in translation, and therefore had a different reading in mind - even now I find it difficult to shift to the correct one. I'm sure the language shift is to blame for many other pronunciation mismatches in my life...
3. An overused trope that is your guilty pleasure.
A grumpy/dark/quiet character revealing the extent of their feelings in a dangerous situation. I mean, come on
4. A cliche character type that you like better onscreen than reading about.
I like seeing bookworms onscreen? Sometimes, if an avid reader is clumsily written, they feel like a writer's guilty pleasure character, while the visual representation (minus vanilla inner dialogue about fantasy worlds, plus real-life details, dialogue, pop culture references...) somehow makes those characters more real to me
5. A word/phrase that you learnt because of its use in a book.
Pretty much all of English language? Reading and watching movies is mostly how I learned, and still learn :)
6. Have you ever not read or completed a required reading book for school?
I was a big fan of required reading, but And Quiet Flows the Don... With all due respect, ugh. That book in itself is my pet peeve. I am known to rant about it from time to time. Most people I know can be divided into War and Peace vs. And Quiet Flows the Don, and I'm firmly in the Tolstoy camp (I just ignore the last chapter)
7. Have you ever skipped a chapter from the POV of a character you weren’t interested in?
Nope, I feel guilty skipping things - I either read everything or give up altogether
8. Have you ever canceled social plans to read?
No, I have cancelled social plans on several many occasions, but mostly because of study/work fatigue. For me reading and social life are definitely not contradictory
---
Tagging a few bookish people I see on my dash - no pressure, if this looks like fun! @manuscripts-dontburn @magic-in-every-book @novelknight @bookworm-of-camelot @pagesinmylife

Quote
You are alone in the woods, seen only by the unblinking yellow moon. Your hands are empty. You are nearly naked. And the wolf is angry. Since her grandmother became her caretaker when she was four years old, Bisou Martel has lived a quiet life in a little house in Seattle. She’s kept mostly to herself. She’s been good. But then comes the night of homecoming, when she finds herself running for her life over roots and between trees, a fury of claws and teeth behind her. A wolf attacks. Bisou fights back. A new moon rises. And with it, questions. About the blood in Bisou’s past and on her hands as she stumbles home. About broken boys and vicious wolves. About girls lost in the woods—frightened, but not alone. Elana K. Arnold, National Book Award finalist and author of the Printz Honor book Damsel, returns with a dark, engrossing, blood-drenched tale of the familiar threats to female power—and one girl’s journey to regain it. Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold Publisher: Balzer + Bray Release Date: February 25th 2020 Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Retellings, Fairy Tales Links: Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43721070-red-hood Amazon: https://amzn.to/32Ip5Us B&N: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/red-hood-elana-k-arnold/1130335629 iTunes: https://books.apple.com/us/book/red-hood/id1465581675 Bookdepository: https://www.bookdepository.com/Red-Hood-Elana-K-Arnold/9780062742353?ref=grid-view&qid=1573657505950&sr=1-1 Kobo: https://www.kobo.com/nz/en/ebook/red-hood-3 Google Books: https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Red_Hood.html?id=W-i4xQEACAAJ&redir_esc=y Favorite Quotes: Fairy tales and fables are powerful because they tell us truths we already know. They ring a bell deep inside us, striking a resonant, vibrating note that makes us nod yes with recognition. Forcing anything when it comes to sex is completely unacceptable. Darling, it is not your job to make boys happy. Sometimes boys become wolves. Review: Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold. I am not totally sure what to say at this moment. This wasn’t the book that I was expecting. I was expecting a modern retelling of Red Riding Hood but instead, I ended up with a giant metaphor of being raped and killing your attacker. Something I wish I had a bit more warning for. Red Hood is told in second person. Which it has been a long time since I read a story like this. Second person is definitely one of the harder story views for me to read. It is a lot harder for me to connect to the characters this way. This story is very gory and very dark. Normally I would mind gory and dark if it made sense, but I don’t feel like it makes sense for this book at least not for teenagers. I find that this doesn’t work so well in this YA thriller fairytale retelling. There are moments that I feel like Arnold is trying to be an educator. She is trying to teach teens how to use a tampon and put a condom on it. I can possibly understand this for kids that have the lack of parental education or even sex ed in school. I just wish that Arnold did a better job with it vs going about it the way that she did. I think the biggest issue that I had with this book is that the message is supposed to be about female empowerment and girls banding together. In the end, it feels like this is feeling you that there is justification in murder. That is not an endorsement I support. This book is written to make the reader very uncomfortable so I get that. I just found that the book wasn’t really for me. I can’t say that it is a bad book either. I would definitely give it like 3 stars. I do think that Arnold is a very skilled writer. About the Author: ELANA K. ARNOLD is the author of critically acclaimed and award-winning young adult novels and children’s books, including the Printz Honor winner Damsel, the National Book Award finalist What Girls Are Made Of, and Global Read Aloud selection A Boy Called Bat and its sequels.
