What are some of your favorite whump series?
Let's see
The boy by @whump-blog I love how Boy is trying to stay close to Caretaker, but at the same moment is scared, so he's hiding behind furniture
Lydia and Coriander by @maracujatangerine Cory is my handsome boy. And i like reading female Caretaker.
Brody by @just-a-whumping-racoon-with-wifi The recapture and retraining arc was 😭😭😭😭😭
That's obvious, but Thomas & Rowe and Colton and Linden by @whumpzone One of the first stories i found. Fun fact: back then i though i was about to find bunch of old blogs and will have to look through rubble for some shiny stuff. So when i found Thomas and Rowe i assumed this is abandoned/completed series. I read it whole and last chapter was about how Rowe got recaptured and i was like "wow so author really gave us this whole wholesome story about recovery only to make Whumpee get kidnapped and never seen again" Luckily it turned out untrue
Villain and Sidekick series by @whumpering-heights Bro, you alive?
And of course, my beloved @jordanstrophe Honestly i can't even choose one series? All of them are dear to my heart. Go chack them out i beg you.
There is also few series that i recently discovered so maybe this list will get longer soon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯¯\_(ツ)_/¯

20 questions for fic writers!
tagged by @bluejayblueskies!
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?  175, all told! Looks like twelve anonymous.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
3,404,353!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently I have ongoing longfics in: Phoenix Wright M*A*S*H* Malevolent House, MD
But I've also recently written for Pentiment + Pathologic. Big previous fandoms include TMA and Disco Elysium. I also really want to start writing Sherlock Holmes again, tbh.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Moving Forward, Circuit by Circuit (DBH) (💀)
Some Air (Nimona)
The Catacomb Killer (Disco Elysium)
Tenth of a Second (Disco Elysium)
To Spare Little Revenges (Our Flag Means Death)
(it's so so so funny that none of them are Malev + TMA)
5. Do you respond to comments?
I do! Around once a week I'll go through and try to get them. Sometimes I can't think of what to say, sometimes it's a quick 'thank you!'.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I can think of two: Catacomb Killer explicitly ends with war breaking out after the case is solved. I debated on this for a long time, but in the end, one of the main decisions the protags make in the end is to give a sensitive piece of intel to what would be the rebels, knowing that it might encourage them to act quickly. And, you know! Consequences.
road trip of the damned (an ode to good cows) doesn't end angstily necessarily, but the entire fic basically ends with 'and Jon gets home and goes to his grandmother's funeral and grieves'. The fic didn't revolve around grief until about halfway thrugh outlining it.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Lighthouse might take the cake - many characters are back from the dead and living in an extended family situation. The Prodigal (or, a Planet Called Petunia) is one of my biggest 'from rock bottom to right on top' stories (because god bless, even Arthur Lester only gets the gift of having more horrors once he scrapes himself off the pavement).
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Every once in a while! Usually not anything intentionally malicious, though. Mostly people not reading the room.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Typically not exclusively smut! A sex scene every once in a blue moon, though, if the characters vibe. I think subconsciously I include a similar amount of sex that is in the source material.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not regularly, but a few! I've cross-overed Mistholme with TMA once, and Monstrous Agonies with TMA + Malevolent.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
aw man let's hope not
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! Incredibly kind, it always makes me want to learn the translated language.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
I think Spirk is the one that will always stick with me, but Johnlock and Jonmartin have had such an impact on me.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I've got two Holmes longfics all outlined out that really excite me, but... oh, man. For some reason sitting down to write them hasn't happened. I also have a Malevolent longfic based on the original stories of the King in Yellow book - which I do want to finish, but it will be horrifically long.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm decent with 'oh, so this is what the story's about' moments - like, oh, this story is about discovering meaning or falling in love or learning forgiveness or w/e. I like big, flashy finales. I've also been told my pacing is very good, and generally speaking, I think I'm halfway decent with humor.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Sometimes I think in my drive to push the plot along, I strip away a lot of the fluffier character-buildy moments - and emotional throughlines for characters can be a bear. I've also noticed a recent thing where I'm, like. Omitting a very important part of the scene and just writing a reaction to it. Which is wild and fun to edit with.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Sometimes! Usually when there's no direct translation (or the 'direct translation' is way too stiff).
19. First fandom you wrote for?
BBC Sherlock, 100% positive.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oh, I don't know if I could pick a favorite! Catacomb Killer was so fun to play with the dialogue, and doing the research for formaldehyde and i'm afraid to come home in the dark was cool. I think I might actually pick Interim? (I Hardly Know Him) just because my usual longfics are angsty-ish, but writing Wooden Overcoats fanfic was like writing a sitcom. Was fun!

Replying to /post/688261995051499520.
Alright, I've been watching this argument for a while and I'm jumping in now. I'm going to assume you genuinely have good intentions here, so let's try to diffuse the situation a bit.
The person you replied to never said their trauma is worse than anyone else's. They said they were a trauma survivor to strengthen their statement of knowing the definition of the word "gaslight". Their point was that you used the term gaslight inappropriately. I assumed they mentioned their trauma because it's usually people who aren't trauma survivors who use loaded words like "gaslight" incorrectly, whereas trauma survivors typically don't do that, because they fully understand the weight of the word. They probably assumed you were not a trauma survivor because you used the term hyperbolically. That's a mistake on their part, yep. But even if you are a trauma survivor, it doesn't make using that term inappropriately any more acceptable. It just confirms how trauma survivors, too, can use words inappropriately, yeah? Pointing out the misuse of a word is not toxic, and claiming otherwise kind of further encourages people to realize you did, indeed, misuse the word "gaslight" too. Please just be more cognizant of what you write, and make sure you're not putting words in peoples' mouths, whether you're doing it intentionally or not. We all do this from time to time, but we can't read between the lines if there is literally nothing between the lines to read. The person did not make any comparisons between their traumas and yours - for that to have happened, they would've needed to assume you WERE a trauma survivor, and they did the opposite; you had to point it out yourself. So yeah, no comparison was being made, because they didn't think there was anything to compare with.
If your point is that there is veiled sexism and misogyny in the RPC, I agree with you. We're on the same page. And I think everyone else is, too. I don't think anyone has actually denied that sexism exists in the RPC, in the asks or the comments here. Maybe the "you are not being oppressed" ask, but there's also a chance they were talking about the scenario in the OP's post, rather than denying any and all sexism/oppression exists in the RPC. Never attribute to malice what you can attribute to ignorance or clumsy wording - it would be nice if the OP of the ask clarified, but yeah. Also, I just want to point out because I think it's important: if you're upset that nobody here has acknowledged sexism is alive and well in the RPC, consider this: someone not saying something does not immediately mean they are saying the opposite of whatever that is. Sometimes, omission is just omission. There is no deeper meaning. Nobody has to make a bunch of declarations just to ensure people don't think them omitting hat statement means they believe the opposite. This is such a huge problem online right now, it's why many people have mile-long DNI lists. They're scared of being called bigots if they do not openly, clearly, advertise their distaste for said bigots. It's like needing to walk around with a big poster board on your chest all the time, and for a lot of people, that's not doable, because it stresses them out, and it's just way too much to consider every time they write or say something. I beseech you to take that to heart, and apply it to the conversation here.
Anyways, if sitewide sexism was the only point you're trying to make, yes, I can see that, and I agree. Unfortunately, I'm looking back at the OP's original post, and they made a decent effort not to blanket-judge people, and it was fairly apparent they were speaking subjectively even in spite of any written slip-ups. There was no real reason to suspect them of being hateful towards women, or being misogynistic, or being malicious at all. Sometimes, people just get frustrated with a certain type of muse. It's the frustration from repeated bad experiences that causes the wariness towards a type of muse, and even then, it's not sexism. It's just wariness. Someone being wary of certain muses is not always motivated by gender discrimination.
We really, really need to talk about some other stuff, too. Like... Bear with me here. You said, "what a thing to spew about women". But the person you responded to didn't make any comments about women in their ask. They were talking about you, and directly to you. Also, you said people are "bent out of shape". But honestly, I think most people here are being snarky and dismissive, not just that person. There's a lot of brick walls being put up. The tone of your ask here, for example, is very aggressive, and it doesn't indicate any willingness to listen and learn, even though I'm certain we're actually on the same page here. Next, you mentioned blocking, but you sent this ask instead of blocking, blacklisting, or unfollowing yourself, too. Now, I'm not the person you were replying to, but personally, I'm not troubled enough by this discussion to need to block anyone, because it's not evoking a ton of stress for me. I tend to stay very levelheaded during heated conversations. It's possible the other person also didn't feel the need to block, and their snarkiness was just that - snarkiness - not an indication that they were completely overwhelmed and needed to exit. But if this conversation bothers you personally, and that's valid, you really can block and leave it yourself, too. You do not need to get the last word in edge-wise. Seriously. Take care of yourself. You also told the person to stop soapboxing and "get back to the point", but in the same breath, you brought the loss of bodily autonomy (presumably abortion) into this, a discussion originally focused on female original characters. Do you kinda see where this is going? I'm not going to comment on the autonomy thing, because I don't want to go there. I'm trying to point out that telling people to stay on topic and to keep the discussion on RP problems, only to bring up something like that (which is tied to a very stressful current event), is hypocritical and bad faith. This doesn't make you a hypocrite, but it does mean your statement was hypocritical.
Now, on the topic of stress. I can imagine you're upset about current events, that's valid. Anyone with basic decency and morals is behind you on that one, I know I am. I'm furious. Please just consider finding another outlet to vent about it? Right now, it feels like the original discussion about RP and muses is turning into a discussion about current events. Is it possible your (and everyone else's) frustration about those current events is leaking into the RP discussion here, and making what people are saying about muses and muns seem more loaded than it actually is? That's not a flaw or a horrible thing, it happens to everyone, but it's something everyone needs to be aware of. And if that is the case, if you're overwhelmed, there are lots of vent blogs and resources online. There are lots of subreddits, and most of them will show up with a simple google search. Maybe check those out? Not just you, anyone who needs support. /r/truechildfree is a really great one, and I promise I don't mean this sarcastically.
But really, can everyone, not just the person I'm replying to, just take it down a notch? Between all the pot shots, tangential things, and all that, it's hard to even tell what's going on anymore.
In response to this ask about this submission.

multiple my policeman screenings
I feel like I really need to document the experience of watching my policeman on this Thursday night up in the balcony theater of the mind that was having a live scored performance of Nosferatu that was the last roommate life I mean the movie because it would be the saddest scene you ever seen in your life and then you’d hear a theremin and like a marching drum beat it was so absurd get to religion a crowd that this really reacted to the lesbian schoolteacher going and what about your marriage is natural they literally all work so perfect and then they also got to gasp for the big reveal it was me I reported you and then the way they were crying when it was a young Tom so what else was I thinking about the movie on this go around I was thinking about how Tom treats Marion and how little respect he seems to have for her because he asks Patrick if Patrick is willing to share but he never gives a courtesy to Marion in fact he traps her and I think he did that
he did that maliciously because he didn’t wanna lose her as he says at the end and so he lied intentionally omitted the truth to get what he wanted and what he needed which was protection for him and Patrick or so he thought and it is in underestimating Marion that he sees this whole thing because he does think she’s a wonderful person she probably likes the meekness about her the way that she is so forgiving of him and so oblivious to him and so weak and he has to play at being the man and he wants Patrick to play the effeminate one to be like a housewife to him and yeah Tom in his simple brutish simplicity

I know a lot of this is probably restating things other people have said but I just want to sort of summarize my thoughts on stuff.
1. C!Wilbur lying to C!Philza in his letters.
Okay, so there’s a lot of discussion on why C!Wilbur lied in his letters, and I would say that at least personally, I don’t see the lies as intentionally malicious. To me, and many others I’ve noticed, it feels more like C!Wilbur desperately needing his father to be proud of him and fearing disappointment, so he lied to make what happened sound better. Also, it makes sense that he never brings up his own health or asks for help, because no matter how much someone cares about you it can feel like you can’t tell them you’re suffering. C!Wilbur’s mental state wouldn’t let him ask for help, not even from his father. Overall, C!Wilbur only wanted to make his dad proud and never intended for there to be such severe consequences from his lies.
2. C!Philza and C!Techno talks about the DSMP history
This seems like a more controversial one, as people are pretty split on responsibility and outcomes. I do not think it’s fair to say that C!Techno manipulated C!Philza or deliberately omitted parts of what happened with Pogtopia. I said this as a reblog elsewhere, but for all we know C!Philza never asked C!Techno about L’Manburg or Pogtopia because he had no reason to. C!Philza was stunned to realize C!Wilbur lied to him, so why wouldn’t he believe that he has the full story when he first shows up to the DSMP? Then, if C!Philza mentions C!Wilbur’s letters, why would C!Techno have any reason to believe that C!Philza isn’t caught up on the accurate events of the server? Neither of them have any real reason to think the letters are full of lies. Add in C!Techno’s ADHD, and not only would he not want to bring up uncomfortable conversations of his own volition, but he would easily just not think to discuss it at any point or check if C!Philza is actually caught up on what went down.
C!Philza and C!Techno are old friends and even completely thrown off, I don’t see C!Philza blowing up at C!Techno. C!Philza would absolutely hear C!Techno out on his side of the story and be patient with him.
So yeah, a bit of rambling but just wanted to summarize my own thoughts on all the new lore. Hope this makes sense!

Statement by His Royal Highness
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.
As a couple, we believe in media freedom and objective, truthful reporting. We regard it as a cornerstone of democracy and in the current state of the world – on every level – we have never needed responsible media more.
Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son.
There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face – as so many of you can relate to – I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been. Because in today’s digital age, press fabrications are repurposed as truth across the globe. One day’s coverage is no longer tomorrow’s chip-paper.
Up to now, we have been unable to correct the continual misrepresentations - something that these select media outlets have been aware of and have therefore exploited on a daily and sometimes hourly basis.
It is for this reason we are taking legal action, a process that has been many months in the making. The positive coverage of the past week from these same publications exposes the double standards of this specific press pack that has vilified her almost daily for the past nine months; they have been able to create lie after lie at her expense simply because she has not been visible while on maternity leave. She is the same woman she was a year ago on our wedding day, just as she is the same woman you’ve seen on this Africa tour.
For these select media this is a game, and one that we have been unwilling to play from the start. I have been a silent witness to her private suffering for too long. To stand back and do nothing would be contrary to everything we believe in.
This particular legal action hinges on one incident in a long and disturbing pattern of behaviour by British tabloid media. The contents of a private letter were published unlawfully in an intentionally destructive manner to manipulate you, the reader, and further the divisive agenda of the media group in question. In addition to their unlawful publication of this private document, they purposely misled you by strategically omitting select paragraphs, specific sentences, and even singular words to mask the lies they had perpetuated for over a year.
There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour, because it destroys people and destroys lives. Put simply, it is bullying, which scares and silences people. We all know this isn’t acceptable, at any level. We won’t and can’t believe in a world where there is no accountability for this.
Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.
We thank you, the public, for your continued support. It is hugely appreciated. Although it may not seem like it, we really need it.

Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son.

doubt comes in: a complete analysis
first of all, for all intents and purposes, london!orpheus has no rights, and here’s why:
london!orpheus has a self-assured confidence to him. he does not pause before dialogue—he does not need to. “come home with me” is driven solely by confidence that eurydice will definitely, 100% fall for him. hermes mentions that “eurydice knew how to survive,” but “orpheus knew how to live.” orpheus’s drop-to-his-knees, spur-of-the-moment, pseudo-proposal has lively arrogance behind it.
broadway!orpheus, however, is the exact opposite. he is constantly driven by dreaminess and a perpetual, underlying anxiety. there is absolutely no arrogance whatsoever behind his characterization.
while confident london!orpheus is, admittedly, VERY sexy, he is unable to bring the same emotion to songs such as “wait for me,” “if it’s true,” and “doubt comes in” (the latter especially!!). he starts the show very sure of himself and stays that way through act i and most of act ii. while one may think that this makes his total breakdown in doubt comes in more meaningful, it does not. it’s like orpheus has backed himself into a corner emotion- and confidence-wise and it would be uncharacteristic to fall straight to rock bottom after being strong and self-assured for the whole show thus far.
the best part of broadway’s dreamy, distracted orpheus is that the audience gets a chance to watch his belief in himself grow gradually until his turning point songs (“wait for me,” “if it’s true”) cement his newfound confident characterization in their minds. they have come to root for the underdog and are attached to his character. but then, starting at “wait for me ii,” as hermes is warning orpheus about the dangers of his journey with eurydice to the surface world, the audience recognizes a note or two of panic within orpheus akin to those they saw in songs such as “chant” and “a gathering storm.”
without witnessing how far orpheus has come, the audience wouldn’t be as broken up about his eventual failure to get the love of his life back. one could even argue that eurydice was the one that salvaged his confidence (probably during that super sweet part in “all i’ve ever known”) and cultivated it to be what the audience sees in “wait for me,” aka the ultimate declaration of his love. this argument would make it even more painful when she dies and, consequently, all of orpheus’s belief in himself dies with her.
at its core, it’s playing with the audience’s favor. london!orpheus already has the audience’s attraction, but the ever-anxious broadway!orpheus gained the audience’s sympathy throughout his story. london!orpheus’s loss isn’t as great because we know he can function on his own. we’ve seen it in songs like the london version of “livin’ it up on top.”
broadway!orpheus has demonstrated that eurydice is the only thing keeping him together. he literally gets torn nearly to shreds once he enters the underworld and she is separated from him during “papers.” the driving point behind all of his actions is to right his wrongs and get eurydice back. so his loss is MONUMENTAL compared to assertive, flashy, london!orpheus’s because the audience knows that he genuinely cannot handle himself without her.
keeping that in mind, let’s continue into “doubt comes in.”
“doubt comes in,” the penultimate song in the musical, is an illustration of orpheus’s complete mental collapse. it is symbolic of the destruction of all the love and hope for the world that he previously held. let’s get into the details.
the evolution of the beginning of the song is as follows:
a. in the concept album, after a VERY lengthy (but necessary for setting the scene) two-minute intro, orpheus himself starts the song. the opening lyrics are “doubt comes in and strips the paint/ doubt comes in and turns the wine/ doubt comes in and leaves a trace of vinegar and turpentine.” these lyrics are sung with the same otherworldly disconnectedness in which justin vernon’s orpheus sings everything. he continues with “where are you?/ where are you, now?” which is self-explanatory.
b. in the 2016 cast album, the fates start off with the same lyrics. this is attributed to their characterization from early on in the musical: “they [are] always singin’ in the back of your mind.” they function as orpheus’s anxieties and (self-)doubts personified. damon comes in a little later with his trademark wavering tenor singing “doubt comes in and all falls silent/ it’s as though you weren’t there.” this is fleshing orpheus out a little more, voicing his main fear—that eurydice isn’t behind him, that this is all a trick.
c. reeve’s “doubt comes in” is the most dramatically changed. they changed it so that it would fit his character more, and they did so EXPERTLY. reeve’s broadway!orpheus very clearly suffers from severe anxiety. he’s sensitive and jumps at the slightest sound. the way he neglects his relationship with eurydice in favor of working on the song is not malicious, but charged with fear. it’s not intentional, he just has a habit of shutting everything out when working on something important. he’s never been in a relationship before, so he doesn’t consider that maybe, eurydice needs him as much as he needs her. but i digress. reeve’s “doubt comes in” starts with the repetition of his lalala melody—the exact same one that the audience has come to associate with him. he sings this to himself both for comfort and in the feeble hope that eurydice will hear it and know where to follow him (akin to theseus making a trail of ariadne’s thread to help him escape the minotaur’s labyrinth). in the beginning of the show (“come home with me”), orpheus describes the melody as something that “takes what’s broken and makes it whole,” and he’s using his lalalas as just that. while that is heartbreaking enough to begin with, reeve’s trembling, almost-faltering falsetto (reevesetto, if you will) adds a layer of suspense and desperation that damon and justin can only dream of.
the instrumental:
- every version of doubt comes in has a variation of the same instrumental. the haunting strings fill the theatre with a palpable fear, leaving even the people who don’t know the myth filled with a sense of dread.
- the truly striking part about the instrumental, though, is the drumbeat. it’s meant to symbolize orpheus’s heartbeat pounding in his ears, and has the same effect on the audience.
eurydice’s verses:
- eurydice’s first line in both the concept album’s “doubt comes in” and the 2016 one is “orpheus, you’re shivering/ is it cold or fear?” one could argue that these are the most tender lyrics exchanged between the lovers throughout the whole musical. it demonstrates eurydice’s intimate knowledge of her lover whether it’s justin’s determined orpheus, damon’s confident orpheus, or reeve’s fearful orpheus (that is, if they had included it in the broadway version). in some ways, it is a response to the orpheus’s line prior to it: “where are you now?”
justin and anaïs: these two have the energy of a couple that has faced the trials, come out victorious, and will do so again. anaïs’s steady, haunting voice does not serve as an accessory to justin’s layered vocals, her eurydice is as determined as justin’s orpheus. they know that they will be fine as long as everything goes according to plan (spoilers: it doesn’t). when anaïs sings “orpheus, you’re shivering/ is it cold or fear?” it’s like she’s checking up on him, just to be safe. it’s not so much fear in her voice as it is a simple question, as if her next words would be “just checking in. keep going, baby, we’re almost there.”
damon and nabiyah: their relationship is more tentative. it was fractured when eurydice sold her soul, and it’s just starting to be repaired. when nabiyah sings “orpheus, you’re shivering/ is it cold or fear?” there is more lingering anger in it than what anaïs offered. it’s seen in the way she hisses his name, remaining on the last consonant for longer than she used to. however, after a beat, once she realizes that he’s shaking, (implying that either 1. she’s following close enough to see him tremble, or 2. she recognizes the wavering in his voice as a red flag, which is adorable because that means she was intentionally looking for anything that would indicate that orpheus wasn’t feeling as confident as he usually did as a precaution because she knew how fast things could spiral from there) her tone softens. she melts and offers him words of reassurance “just keep singing/ the coldest night/ of the coldest year/ comes right before the spring.”
reeve and eva: i will always (always!) be mad that they omitted that line from the broadway production. it had so much potential considering that eva follows so far behind reeve throughout the song. in her bold, protective voice, the mere singing of orpheus’s name would have 100% knocked me to the ground. and reeve’s orpheus would be most likely to display such symptoms. even the audience member in the farthest seat from the stage could tell that reeve was shaking as he walked forward on the turntable, he just gave off that aura (it’s free real estate good acting). of course eurydice would notice that he was afraid.
lyric changes (in no particular order):
a. in the broadway version, the “where are you now” was changed to “where is she now,” reiterating the fact that eurydice is orpheus’s number one priority (and source of fear)
b. in place of the “you’re shivering” line, broadway!eurydice’s words are more encouraging. had this been earlier in the show, she wouldn’t have been so optimistic. orpheus replenished her hope in the world with “epic iii” and that’s what carried her through “promises,” “wait for me ii,” and, of course, “doubt comes in.” she says “orpheus, are you listening?/ i’m right here/ and i will be ‘til the end” for the first verse and “orpheus, you’re not alone/ i’m right behind you/ and i have been all along” for the second, right before he looks back.
c. orpheus’s inner (sung) monologue fleshes him out more than the concept album and the 2016 recording ever did with their respective orphei. one of the most prominent examples of this is the lyric “who am i to think that she would follow me into the cold and dark again?”
d. this is one of the many callbacks in “doubt comes in.” orpheus means that eurydice took a chance in following him into the “cold and dark,” i.e. poverty. the fact that she does it AGAIN exemplifies great character development. from the first time eurydice was introduced, she was characterized as self-sufficient and unwilling to rely on others. but now, after all she’s been through, she willingly puts her life in someone else’s hands—something she would have never, ever done had she not met orpheus. the fact that orpheus says “again” demonstrates his awareness (something else he has gained since the beginning of the show) that he already let eurydice down once and he does not want to again.
callbacks:
a. “the wind is changing...” this is sung by the fates in the chorus and is reminiscent of “a gathering storm.”
b. “la lala la lala la la...” this is orpheus’s musical motif. it symbolizes togetherness and hope. however, while all other times he is eventually joined by the ensemble, this is different. he is singing his melody into the dark and hoping against hope that someone will answer. no one does.
c. “i used to see the way the world could be/ but now the way it is is all i see...” orpheus is hope personified. he symbolizes all that is good, he never sees the bad in anyone and on the off chance that he does, he doesn’t fixated on it. but here, he’s rethinking his worldview. the darkness has seeped into his soul, rendering him terrified and doubtful.
d. “it’s you/ it’s me/ orpheus/ eurydice” this is a callback to “come home with me ii,” which sucks because it’s uhhhh painful.
conclusion: jo found dead in miami.

Spirit Tracks Translation Comparison: Battle Atop the Demon Train
Tumblr media
This will be a comparison of the original Japanese version and the US English localized version.
Specifically, this will cover the cutscenes before and after the battle with Malladus and Cole on top of the Demon Train.
You can also watch these cutscenes for yourself in English and Japanese. If you want, you can check out the EU English version, too.
For the comparison, the usual points apply:
Bolded is the original Japanese text, for the reference.
Bolded and italicized is my translation.
Italicized is the official NOA translation.
A (number) indicates that I have a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.
As you read this, please keep in mind that with translations like these, it’s important not to focus on the exact literal wordings, since there is no single “correct answer” when it comes to translations.
Rather than that, consider the actual information that is being conveyed, in which way, and why.
--
Characters in this part who had their names changed between versions:
Kimaroki = Cole, Mallador = Malladus
--
Before the Battle:
Zelda:
ここまでです キマロキ! もう あなたの好きには させません!
This is as far as you go, Kimaroki! We will no longer let you do as you please!
You've gone far enough, Cole. This is where it ends.
Cole:
…言いましたよね?
私 あなた方に 言ったはずですよね?
魔王様の完全復活を 震えて 待っていなさいって…
それなのに わざわざ自分から 乗り込んでくるだなんて…
...I told you, did I not?
I most certainly did tell you, no?
I kindly asked you to tremble in fear as you wait for His Majesty's complete resurrection...
And in spite of that, you have the gall to force your way up here...  (1)
You again...
The Demon King's return is nigh, you know.
Yet, here you are, making a nuisance of yourselves!
Cole:
最近のガキは言いつけも満足に 守れねーのか? あぁ!?
You brat can't even properly do as you're told anymore these days, huh?!
You insolent little fools!
Cole:
上等だ ガキ共! てめえらに きっついオシオキをくれてやらぁ!
Well, bring it on, brats! You pests got a hefty dose of punishment coming your way!
It's time you received the punishment you deserve!
Cole:
さあ  魔王様 融合は もう完全です!!
Now, Your Majesty, the amalgamation has been completed!!
Your Majesty! Your resurrection is complete!
Cole:
……やっちゃってください!!
...Smash them, if you would!!
Please use your power to destroy these two!
Zelda:
…行きますよ! リンク!!
...Here we go, Link!!
This is it, Link!
-
During the Battle:
Boss Title:
魔王マラドー
Demon King Mallador
Malladus
-
Zelda, when rats appear:
リンク! 助けて!
Link! Help!
Help, Link!
-
Zelda, when rats are defeated:

Thank you for saving me!
-
Zelda, when taken over:

-
Zelda, when restraining Malladus:

Now! Pierce him with the Bow of Light!
Shoot Malladus with the Bow of Light now!
-
After the Battle:
Cole:
ま 魔王さま…
Y-Your Majesty...
Your Majesty...
Zelda:

I... I am not letting you get away, Mallador!
You won't escape this time, Malladus!
Malladus:
ハナセッ! ハナセェッ!!
LET GO! LET GO OF ME!!  (2)
RELEASE ME!
Zelda:
リンク! き 危険です!
Link! I-it is not safe here!
Link! Be careful!
Zelda:
わたしに構わずマラドーから 離れてください!
Please, do not mind me, just get away from Mallador!
Don't worry about me! Just get away from Malladus!
Translation Notes:
The phrase I adapted as “force your way up here” is 乗り込む/norikomu in Japanese, which can also mean “get on” or “board”, as in boarding a train. However, it can also refer to breaking in, or climbing on someplace by force. In this context, arguably both meanings could work.
In Japanese, Malladus uses no ひらがな/hiragana characters when speaking, only カタカナ/katakana and 漢字/kanji. This is a visual indicator that’s sometimes used for a character who speaks in a strange way, like for example sounding robotic, in-human, or even having a heavy accent. In Malladus’ case, it’s likely meant to invoke a very loud, booming voice.
--
Comparisons & Thoughts:
Since both of these cutscenes are especially short, I included the text from during the battle as well.
Like with his previous appearances, the biggest differences here come from the changes made to Cole’s character, so discussing those will make up the bulk of this section.
-
As we’ve seen in previous scenes, a big alteration to Cole’s character in the English localization is the fact that his habit of abruptly switching between talking formally and informally has been removed.
So of course, we get more examples of that here.
In the Japanese version, when Cole begins to talk in the pre-battle cutscene, he first starts with a slow build-up, speaking in a passive-aggressive, but still quite formal manner.
There is some rising tension here, as Cole goes on almost a bit too long for comfort, about something that obviously should make him angry, while still keeping up that faux-polite speaking style.
Then, he turns around suddenly, now clearly yelling, having switched to his crude and informal style again, adding some impact to this moment.
In the English version, there is much less of a contrast or change in the way Cole talks, as always.
The set-up of the scene itself, its movement and audio, still get some of the intended effect across. But from the perspective of the dialogue, it’s weaker.
They even shortened the build-up to the moment Cole snaps, lessening the tension.
It’s another example where the Japanese version uses Cole’s outbursts for dramatic effect, which in turn doesn’t quite have the same energy in the English version.
-
Continuing from the last point, there also things worth mentioning regarding the actual content of what Cole says here:
…I told you, did I not?
I most certainly did tell you, no?
I kindly asked you to tremble in fear as you wait for His Majesty’s complete resurrection…
And in spite of that, you have the gall to force your way up here…
You again…
The Demon King’s return is nigh, you know.
Yet, here you are, making a nuisance of yourselves!
In the Japanese version, Cole is specifically calling back to what he told our heroes at the end of their previous encounter: “Now please tremble in fear as you wait for that moment!!”
Meaning that Cole’s anger here is not just due to Zelda and Link getting in their way again, but also because his order was defied on purpose.
The English version has no such callback, even though they did adapt Cole’s line from back then fairly accurately as: “I would suggest you tremble in fear!”
I’m not sure if this connection just went unnoticed, or if it was omitted intentionally.
In any case, I think it’s a missed opportunity, since acting petty over this adds to Cole’s character, makes the individual cutscenes feel more connected, and they did have a good set-up for it in their version, too.
-
Next is the line Cole says right after.
It’s short, but I think the differences are kind of important:
You brat can’t even properly do as you’re told anymore these days, huh?!
You insolent little fools!
First of all, in Japanese, this line continues to show how Cole really is genuinely pissed off about the fact that his order was defied, as ridiculous as that is.
But it also goes a bit more personal.
Here, Cole again refers to Zelda as ガキ/gaki or “brat”, which he also called her when he revealed his true nature. And while singular/plural is usually ambiguous in Japanese, the context here makes it a lot more likely he is addressing Zelda specifically with this line.
Adding to that, we also see Cole express frustration at the fact that Zelda has stopped listening to him. And that’s a nice detail, serving as a reminder of the history between these two characters.
For years, Zelda grew up with Cole acting as an overly controlling, malicious authority figure, who was only raising her to use as a sacrifice one day, and thus tried his hardest to stomp every last bit of confidence and agency out of her.
And from what we can gather, she did act obedient to him for the longest time, until the recent events moved her into action.
So now Cole is not just facing some child that is about to throw a wrench in his plan, he is facing a child that he himself raised to never defy him like that, who has broken out of his control in a way he never thought she would be capable of.
By comparison, the English version feels a bit more generic, not really alluding to the personal history between Zelda and Cole as strongly.
It comes off more as your standard annoyance with meddling kids.
-
When Cole calls out to Malladus, in the Japanese version he says that the “amalgamation” is complete, rather than just the “resurrection” like in the English version.
This is referring to something that has come up occasionally, namely that Malladus basically has to completely “coalesce”, i.e. merge with Zelda’s body in order to make full use of it.
I’m assuming the English version changed this line to make it a bit simpler. The fact that Malladus is now fully accustomed to Zelda’s body is already evident from the context, so the exact details aren’t needed.
-
Another small detail about this line from Cole:
…Smash them, if you would!!
Please use your power to destroy these two!
As usual, the English version has Cole be more consistently fancy when he talks, but there is something funny about his line in Japanese here.
In this line, Cole mixes his different speaking styles in a kind of amusing manner.
He starts it off with the informal, almost childish やっちゃって/yachatte, but then ends it with the proper and polite ください/kudasai.
To me, it gives off the vibe that he is very giddy at the prospect of destroying these kids, but still manages to keep enough self-control to not accidentally insult Malladus by using an improper ending for a formal request.
Either way, it’s a fun little moment that plays with his odd speaking habits.
-
When the battle begins, the English version has the boss title simply read “Malladus”, rather than displaying his full title like the Japanese version does.
They did the same thing with Byrne’s battle earlier, so I already talked a bit about this.
Just like in that instance, I don’t know if I would consider Malladus a character who warrants having such a reference to the Ocarina of Time battle with Ganon.
I think Malladus’ battle here is probably a better choice than Byrne’s battle, but I still don’t feel that comparing him with Ocarina of Time’s Ganon like that works.
And even if it did, doing this reference twice in the same game makes it lose its impact.
If they really wanted to do this, they should have picked one of the two battles, rather than doing it for both.
-
Finally, Malladus gets to speak his first real words at the end of this battle.
In the translation notes I explained the unusual way his dialogue is written in Japanese.
As I mentioned there, I think in his case it’s likely supposed to show his voice feeling unnaturally loud and booming, like something you would expect from a powerful demonic being.
The English version seemingly adapts this here by writing his dialogue in all caps, which I think works well enough.
However, they’re not consistent about this, since they drop it the next time Malladus speaks.
As a result, Malladus’ English line here just seems like he’s simply yelling in hindsight, not like there is something inherently different about the way he sounds.
-
All in all, the localization in these cutscenes is another mixed bag for me, but different from the last part.
I think pretty much all of Zelda’s dialogue in this one was localized perfectly. The problem is that she only makes up about 30-40% of it.
Cole takes up the majority of the dialogue here, and while I normally think the English version’s take on him works well at being itself, in this scene it’s just not as good as the original.
In this part, we aren’t just dealing with his basic characterization being changed as usual, he also doesn’t have a comparable amount of energy in the English version.
Since this is the final direct confrontation with him, acting as somewhat of a climax to his dynamic with Zelda, it’s a bit of a disheartening note to end on from a localization perspective.
The English version’s take on Cole has his own style of splendor, and it would have been nice to see it utilized better in these cutscenes here.
But that’s the end of this part. Feel free to check out the next one!

Statement by His Royal Highness - Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex
MEDIA INFORMATION
Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Sussex has filed a claim against Associated Newspapers over the misuse of private information, infringement of copyright and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018.
The proceedings in the Chancery Division of the High Court relate to the unlawful publication of a private letter.
A legal spokesperson from Schillings who are representing The Duchess of Sussex said:
“We have initiated legal proceedings against the Mail on Sunday, and its parent company Associated Newspapers, over the intrusive and unlawful publication of a private letter written by the Duchess of Sussex, which is part of a campaign by this media group to publish false and deliberately derogatory stories about her, as well as her husband. Given the refusal of Associated Newspapers to resolve this issue satisfactorily, we have issued proceedings to redress this breach of privacy, infringement of copyright and the aforementioned media agenda”.
The case is being privately funded by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Pending a Court ruling, proceeds from any damages will be donated to an anti-bullying charity.

I totally believe Taylor might be bi but don't you think is kind of disrespectful to acuse that her diaries and her songs and her explanations about her songs are lies? I don't know if you are one to do this but there are so many Gaylor fans that act as if Joe and Taylor are just a fake thing and that she is still in love with Karlie and totally disrespects her relationship with Joe and the meaning of the songs about him.
Don't you think sometimes Gaylor fans can be disrespectful to Taylor and her current relationship and I just think it should be reminded to some of these fans that: *just because someone is bi and have had relationships with same-sex doesn't mean that they can't love and have their ending relationship to be with someone from the opposite sex. It doesn't make the person any less bi*
--
Hi there anon! 👋🏻
Thank you for your two asks, I’ve decided to put them together here to make it a little bit easier to answer, hope you don’t mind that!
First of all, I do understand that parts of  this isn’t necessarily directed at me personally, but I’d still like to make it clear that I have on numerous occasions said that I do believe Taylor being bisexual is a possibility that is equally as likely as her being a lesbian. Just because I personally happen to get a very lesbian “vibe” from her doesn’t mean I’m right, she may very well be bisexual and if that’s the case then that’s super awesome and I’m happy for her! I do not in any way wish to contribute to bi erasure as that is frankly a really shitty thing and from the bottom of my heart I am very sorry that that happens to bi people. y’all are dope and do not deserve that!! 💗💜💙💗💜💙
Secondly, I don’t think anyone on here is accusing Taylor of lying per say. I have gotten a number of asks calling her a liar or wondering why “we’re all accusing her of lying” here are a few examples of my responses to those types of asks:
https://that-curly-haired-lesbian.tumblr.com/post/177789897723/taylor-is-a-liar-she-lied-about-dating-men-all
https://that-curly-haired-lesbian.tumblr.com/post/175936016648/i-just-saw-an-anti-go-on-about-how-tay-and-kar-are
I fundamentally believe that lying with malicious intent and “lying” (omitting or slanting the truth) to avoid being outed or putting oneself or people one cares about in danger are two VERY different things!
When Gaylors/Kaylors say that Taylor and Joe are “fake” we’re largely referring to a phenomenon known as “bearding” and if you aren’t familiar with the concept I ask you to check out a few of these posts:
  https://all-my-possessions.tumblr.com/post/168200275099/do-you-have-a-masterpost-on-bearding-and-how-it/amp
https://taytaysbeard.tumblr.com/post/168193788424/hey-i-would-love-to-know-your-thoughts-on-taylor
https://taytaysbeard.tumblr.com/post/168918676109/for-my-curious-friends
The reason we tend to discredit explanations for Taylor’s songs that support a narrative where she’s with Joe is because to a lot of us their relationship does not seem as genuine as what she appears to have/have had with Karlie or other ladies before her.   You are 100% right though, having “your person” happen to be a man and not a woman does not make you any less bisexual and to suggest that is frankly disrespectful. However, I do not personally think Taylor is currently or ever will be with a dude. That is not to say that it is completely impossible for her to have had relationships with men, as I’ve already said she might very well be bi and I’m not Taylor so I cannot answer on what her sexuality may be.  I have just never personally seen anything that makes me believe that her being attracted to (romantically or otherwise) men is the case. To me and many other people she just seems a lot more comfortable around women and all her public interactions with men seem forced and less genuine, as if they were perhaps set up to sell the image of her as straight, or at least in some sense attracted to men when that is not in fact the truth of the matter. She’s closeted, she’s doing the thing where she pretends to like boys to stay closeted, at least that is what a lot of us see when we look at her interacting with guys.
To my knowledge Taylor has never, ever, publicly stated that any of her songs are about Joe (or any other person) she’s simply talked about her relationship and avoided saying who that relationship is with, no?
Now, had she said something like “i’m in love with *specific person* and my songs are all about them” I would agree with you, but since she hasn’t said anything to that effect (no secret sessions does not count)  I do not find it any more disrespectful to assume she’s not with Joe than for people to assume that she is. She hasn’t said anything either way, so speculating in either direction is fine if you ask me. (As long as you do find it “fine” to speculate on people’s private lives in general that is.)
However I do think that some people sometimes take it too far when it comes to disrespecting the beards, not when it comes to their relationship with Taylor, but just in general. This is why you will seldom see me calling them rude names or making fun of them in an overly malicious manner. I do understand that is how some people cope with the stunting, but that doesn’t make it right. Harmless jokes are fine, but there are limits and I personally try not to overstep them or make fun of anyone in a disrespectful way, that just ain’t right no matter how much bearding and closeting as a concept frustrates you! None of these people are doing this for fun or to be intentionally untruthful!
As for the diary thing I personally believe that a few of the entries are 100% genuine, while others seem altered or maybe even rewritten to support a straight narrative that doesn’t actually exist. She is closeted and is doing what needs to be done for her to stay that way, it is understandable and I don’t think anyone who knows what it feels like to be in that situation blames her for it.
She doesn’t owe us the truth and if anything I respect her more for keeping what truly matters to her to herself, that is healthy and I support it!
Thanks for the asks! ❤️❤️❤️

Lulu confessed to Eliott that everyone he relies on leaves him, and then Eliott left him, this isn't gonna be a problem at all, not gonna make that trust and daddy issues any worse, Lulu's gonna trust him right???? OMG I can't even convince myself
(2)  Lucas still asked tentative questions about the boy tho, he asked when Eliott said the boy didn't matter, and that's how I figured the boy was Lucas, he didn't sound jealous, but sad? And technically, rereading some earlier chapters, Lucas never lied, just omitted, he truthfully told Eliott when he saw him first, just not the context and let Eliott make his own assumptions, and I really hope Eliott remember all his little hints and come back to Lulu
So as to you first comment... in all honesty, Lucas is not blaming Eliott for his actions whatsoever at this point. While he will likely retreat back into his shell a bit, Lucas is the sort of person that once he lets someone in... they’re in. He hasn’t let ANYONE truly in. Not Alexia, not Yann... no one until Eliott. And there’s no undoing that.
And yes you’re right. Lucas was never intentionally or maliciously deceitful. Certainly not as the Queen believes he was. Some of that will explicitly be brought up in the next chapter.

Would you be able to reblog the post that someone submitted in 2016 of the comparison of the statement Harry released in 2016 defending Meghan and the posts Meghan wrote on her blog The Tig? I tried going through the 2016 section in the archive of your blog because I thought you'd have it but I can't find it. I think that Meghan wrote the recent statement that was released. What do you think?

A Statement by the Communications Secretary to Prince Harry

Published 8 November 2016
Since he was young, Prince Harry has been very aware of the warmth that has been extended to him by members of the public. He feels lucky to have so many people supporting him and knows what a fortunate and privileged life he leads.
He is also aware that there is significant curiosity about his private life. He has never been comfortable with this, but he has tried to develop a thick skin about the level of media interest that comes with it. He has rarely taken formal action on the very regular publication of fictional stories that are written about him and he has worked hard to develop a professional relationship with the media, focused on his work and the issues he cares about.
But the past week has seen a line crossed. His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public - the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. Some of it has been hidden from the public - the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life.
Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game - it is her life and his. He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done. He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.

FULL STATEMENT FROM THE DUKE OF SUSSEX
'As a couple, we believe in media freedom and objective, truthful reporting. We regard it as a cornerstone of democracy and in the current state of the world - on every level - we have never needed responsible media more.
'Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences - a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son.
'There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face - as so many of you can relate to - I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been. Because in today's digital age, press fabrications are repurposed as truth across the globe. One day's coverage is no longer tomorrow's chip-paper.
'Up to now, we have been unable to correct the continual misrepresentations - something that these select media outlets have been aware of and have therefore exploited on a daily and sometimes hourly basis.
'It is for this reason we are taking legal action, a process that has been many months in the making.
'The positive coverage of the past week from these same publications exposes the double standards of this specific press pack that has vilified her almost daily for the past nine months; they have been able to create lie after lie at her expense simply because she has not been visible while on maternity leave.
'She is the same woman she was a year ago on our wedding day, just as she is the same woman you've seen on this Africa tour.
'For these select media this is a game, and one that we have been unwilling to play from the start. I have been a silent witness to her private suffering for too long. To stand back and do nothing would be contrary to everything we believe in.
'This particular legal action hinges on one incident in a long and disturbing pattern of behaviour by British tabloid media. The contents of a private letter were published unlawfully in an intentionally destructive manner to manipulate you, the reader, and further the divisive agenda of the media group in question.
'In addition to their unlawful publication of this private document, they purposely misled you by strategically omitting select paragraphs, specific sentences, and even singular words to mask the lies they had perpetuated for over a year.
'There comes a point when the only thing to do is to stand up to this behaviour, because it destroys people and destroys lives. Put simply, it is bullying, which scares and silences people. We all know this isn't acceptable, at any level. We won't and can't believe in a world where there is no accountability for this.
'Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I've seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.
'We thank you, the public, for your continued support. It is hugely appreciated. Although it may not seem like it, we really need it.'
Why did they need to add it to a separate website with only that on it?
Thank you anon, 🌸😎🥰

Statement by His Royal Highness Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex01 OCTOBER 2019
Statement by His Royal Highness
Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex01 OCTOBER 2019
