#look i know i posted the patrick stewart video (which was delightful but also wholly voluntary)#but if i never hear another thing about celebrities' private lives i would be A-OKAY#i do not want or need an opinion on a certain celebrity couple#i do not want to take a side or treat it like it's a movie#IT"S NOT A MOVIE#TRIALS ARE NOT MOVIES AND WE LITERALLY WILL NOT HEAR ANYWHERE NEAR THE EVIDENCE THAT THE JUDGE/JURY IS PRESENTED WITH#and my opinion DOES NOT CHANGE WHAT HAPPENS in the trial. they're not part of my community. i will literally never meet them#i want it to stop being headline news because they've been public and earned a lot of money#i haven't done a whole lot of research but i think generally we would be a whole lot better off#if trials were much more private#something something parasocial relationships should stay parasocial#because in this case. we the public cannot actually reduce any ACTUAL HARM by following the trial like a drama#it's not like your sibling abusing their child or the neighbor mistreating their spouse#those are cases that you can actually improve for the better.#or you know what? donate to a related cause or volunteer at a shelter#but following the trial literally. literally. will make you angry and lead to zero activism#maybe i've missed something here. maybe i'm wrong. if so i'm willing to learn about benefits of acting contrary to the way i've described#(do not send me anything about the trial whatsoever. i'm talking about...maybe studies that say outcomes are better when trials are#covered by media. or saying that people are more involved in activism when they follow trials or something)#then i can decide if i want to know why it's been a BBC headline for US and Canada for weeks on end

Spite donations
So my evening adderall has kicked in and I wanna talk about the concept of spite donations, because 1. it's such a great idea I want more people to know 2. I want to encourage myself to do it more.
Say you're in an argument with someone, especially online. Here, twitter, facebook, reddit, the family group chat, what the fuck ever. They're being stupid or mean or whatever, but you can't get them to see logic or compassion and they're frustrating you.
You know you're not going to change their mind. But blocking them might feel like giving in. Or they're a relative or a friend and you don't want to burn that bridge just yet. Or you did block them/close the app, but now you have all this anger burning away at you and you feel like shit.
Walk away from the argument (literally or metaphorically). Take a deep breath. And donate money to a person or non-profit out of sheer fucking spite.
(OBVIOUS CAVEAT ONE: Not everyone can do this. I know that. There have been times in my life where I could not even spare $5. I am painfully aware that I am lucky that I can do this sometimes. But that just means that those of us who can afford to do it, should. Imagine that I am doing it on your behalf. I love you.)
If the donation is related to the argument you're having, that's cool! I once got in a rage at a friend's relative on facebook who was denying that voter ID laws are racist (they are, side note; and I gave her lots of information on it) and she was furious that I Was Calling Her Racist!!!11!! So I looked up a couple of voting rights non-profits in her state (one fights against voter suppression laws, the other does the nitty-gritty of helping people get ID's and get to the polls), checked on a couple of non-profit watch sites that they were legit, and donated $50 to each of them.
(I admit I was more spiteful than usual, and posted screenshots of my email receipts to the thread. It did shut her up, so there's that.)
Donate to abortion funds in the name of anti-choice politicians or family members. Donate to a local environmental non-profit when your uncle is a shithead about climate change. Donate to the gofundme's of transgender strangers for their rent or gender-confirming surgeries when JKR pops up in your twitter trending.
BUT it doesn't HAVE to be related to the thing you're angry about.
Lots of shelters and other charities that do direct aid for people have amazon wishlists. I have the the wishlist of a local day shelter for homeless folks on my amazon account. Sometimes when I don't know where else to donate money I just pick random shit off their wishlist. Thanks for making me furious, random asshole on reddit, some homeless woman just got NEW UNDERWEAR AND WARM SOCKS. FUCK YOU.
Look, righteous indignation is an addictive feeling, and the internet is basically primed to give you opportunities to feed into it. Use that urge to do actual good! If nothing else--if you're like me? The feel-good dopamine hit of knowing I'm helping a cause I believe in or even a random stranger? That's a much better bit of dopamine than I could possibly get from yelling at people online.
But also: there's a kind of relief? Often it's just difficult to walk away from an argument. Some days I am better at this than others. But tossing a few bucks at someone who needs it gives me a kind of satisfaction, like I "won" the argument.
"But April, recurring donations are better for most non-profits." I agree! 100%! Did you know that if you use paypal to donate to non-profits, that paypal can keep a list for you and when you go on your account there's an option to do it again? Make a couple of charities/non-profits your default "Fuck This Guy" donations.
It doesn't have to be a lot. $20 is still something. $10 is still SOMETHING.
Don't just get angry. Donate some money.
(OBVIOUS CAVEAT TWO: If you have the time/energy/resources, volunteering is also an amazing option. Or just doing something kind for others when you can. A genuine compliment to a stranger can go a long way to lift the spirits, for them AND you. This is just one method, among many, for dealing with the brokenness of the world. The antidote to hopelessness is action.)

The Benefits of Donating Your Time to Charity Work
Tumblr media
Giving back is always a good thing. Not only does it help those in need, but it can also have some positive benefits for you as well. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the ways in which donating your time to charity work can help you, as well as some target areas you might want to focus on, as suggested by Rabbi Moshe Rabin.
How Donating Your Time Can Help You
One of the most obvious benefits of donating your time to charity work is that it can make you feel good about yourself. Knowing that you're doing something to help others, even if it's in a small way, can be a great boost to your self-esteem and overall outlook on life.
Additionally, volunteering has been linked with better mental and physical health, so it's definitely something worth considering if you're looking for ways to improve your wellbeing.
Another benefit of volunteering is that it can help you gain new skills and experiences. This is especially true if you're working with an organization that's related to your field of interest. For example, if you're looking to get into the healthcare industry, volunteering at a hospital or clinical research center can give you valuable insights and hands-on experience that will look great on your resume.
In addition, volunteering can also be a great way to network and meet new people who might be able to help you further your career goals.
Target Areas To Focus On
When it comes to choosing a charity or charitable cause to volunteer for, there are countless options available. However, if you're looking for ways to maximize the benefits we discussed above, here are a few areas you might want to focus on:
Healthcare: As we mentioned before, healthcare is a great industry to volunteer in if you're looking for a way to gain new skills and experiences. There are always opportunities available at hospitals, clinics, and other care facilities for volunteers of all backgrounds and skill levels.
Environmental Conservation: Another area where volunteers are always needed is environmental conservation. If you're passionate about protecting our planet and its resources, there are plenty of charities and organizations that would love to have your help. From planting trees to cleaning up beaches, there's no shortage of ways you can lend a hand.
Animal Welfare: If you love animals, then working with a charity that focuses on animal welfare is a great way to give back. Whether it's helping out at an animal shelter or working with an organization dedicated to saving endangered species, there are many different ways you can get involved.
Conclusion:
Donating your time to charity work is definitely something worth considering if you're looking for ways to improve your life both mentally and physically. Not only will it make you feel good about yourself, but it can also help you gain new skills and experiences. When choosing an area to focus on, there are many different options available depending on your interests.
However, some general areas where volunteers are always needed include healthcare, environmental conservation, and animal welfare. So what are you waiting for? Find a cause that speaks to you and get out there and start giving back!

Deported Veterans Support House - Juarez Bunker
THE JUAREZ BUNKER: DEPORTED VETERANS SUPPORT HOUSE IN CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO
Since 1996, the United States Government has been deporting veterans who, as legalized citizens, joined the United States Armed Forces and served the country. The deported veterans support house has come into contact with over 100 veterans who have been deported to over 25 countries of origin around the world. All of these veterans had legal residency status, Veterans Administration (VA) Benefits as well as strong ties to the United States prior to deportation. All of the veterans whom we have met maintain a strong desire to return to the United States, as many have hardly known any other home throughout their lives and have been forced to leave behind children, spouses, parents, and siblings as well as firmly established lives and communities in the United States.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Deported Veterans Support House is to support deported veterans on their path to self-sufficiency by providing assistance in the realms of food, clothing, and shelter as they adjust to life in their new country of residence. Ultimately, we hope to see an end to the need of our services as we advocate for political legislation which would prohibit the deportation of United States service personnel, both former and current. We advocate for Veterans &their families.
What We do
The Deported Veterans Support house operates under the direction of founder Hector Barajas The house operates as a shelter and resource center for veterans who need assistance, as well as office for our political advocacy efforts in the realm of immigration reform. DVSH also raises awareness about the deported veteran cause through social media, public outreach, and community events.
The Deported Veterans Support House (DVSH) knows that when someone is deported, that person faces immense fears and numerous obstacles in adjusting to the life that was thrust upon them. This relates to circumstances such as separation from family, disorientation, feelings of abandonment and lack of hope. The Deported Veterans Support House staff works diligently to ensure that DVSH is a place of security and a place of new beginnings. The DVSH can provide for immediate needs such as temporary safe shelter, clothing items, food and assistance getting on solid footing; DVSH can also help the Deported Veteran obtain local identification, which is of the utmost importance for effective residency in Mexico. Many deported Veterans need legal assistance with their various immigration cases which most hope to appeal, as well as psychological counseling and medical services. We seek the help of trained professionals in Mexico to help with these long term needs.
DVSH understands the need to maintain contact with family in the United States and helps Deported Veterans establish solid methods of communication through phone and/or internet. Additionally, If a deported Veteran is suffering through afflictions and dependency issues, or expresses a desire for spiritual support, we can help connect the person with appropriate resources in the area. Ultimately, we aspire to provide hope, to build confidence, and foster independence among the deported veteran population in Juarez. DVSH has an open door policy. Anyone at any time is welcome and encouraged to visit us, stay with us, learn with us and grow with us, including volunteers or interested visitors.
Ways You Can Help
The DVSH welcomes donations of items like canned goods, clothing, food, used or new shoes, furniture, blankets, hygiene products, etc. Donations may be dropped off at locations in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Tijuana. Monetary donations are always welcome and are spent on house expenses such as rent, bills, food, etc.
We are always accepting of volunteers to come work alongside these Deported Veterans, If you have a talent that you think would be of help, please share it with us. DVSH also welcomes contacts for job skill training and future job placement. We are in great need of medical, legal, and psychological services, and welcome the services of said professionals.

Pride Spotlight: Ramzy Masri
In celebration of Pride Month, we’re spotlighting some fantastic LGBTQ+ creators who inspire with their work and actions. Here’s a unicorn artist, graphic designer, and creative director Ramzy Masri (pictured below). He makes the world better by seeing it through color, beauty, and yes, some of the most magical digital rainbows. Here’s more about Ramzy and his extraordinary visual world.
Tumblr media
What does Pride mean to you?
Pride is a time to pause and reflect on how far the LGBTQ+ community has come and the work still to be done. This year with World Pride and Stonewall 50 there’s a lot to celebrate, though with the Straight Pride controversy and violence against trans women of color like Layleen Polanco its clear there’s still work to be done.
At its best, Pride is an outstretched hand: an open invitation to build community, to strengthen our chosen families and the bonds that we’ve formed as members of an oppressed community. It’s a time to organize, celebrate and appreciate the things that make us unique and different.
Tumblr media
How can we continue to support the LGBTQ+ community?
This is a great question. My motto is “Every Day is Pride March” — mainly because we have to show up every day for ourselves and advocate for those who have less privilege, visibility and rights. There’s so much diversity in our community, from cis gay men to bisexuals, trans men and intersexed people, each with their own stories. We can all help to prioritize those stories and tell them during the rest of the year — not just during June. We’re a vulnerable community that experiences discrimination, hate and violence and we need allies who can bring our fight into the spotlight.
What are some concrete things folks can do to continue to support the LGBTQ+ community? Volunteer with LGBTQ+ organizations like SAGE, GLSEN, The Trevor Project, GSA, PFLAG, local shelters for LGBTQ+ homeless youth, retirement communities for LGBTQ+ elders. Advocate, volunteer or donate for politicians who champion our rights. Condemn and protest those who don’t. Support trans folks top or bottom surgeries — there are plenty of gofundme pages set up just for this cause. Go with a friend when they get tested. Help support people who might not have health insurance but have chronic illnesses or AIDS-related disease. Be present for LGBTQ+ youth, connect them to resources that may help them, fight for them when other adults don’t understand them. Use your voice, your love, your patience and your privilege for good, year round.
Tumblr media
How did your love for rainbows commence?
It probably started with Lisa Frank. I’m non-binary so I’ve always wanted to express my femininity, but in grade school in the late 90s it wasn’t socially acceptable. Lisa Frank was like a window into another world and I coveted it. I’ve grown up to love what rainbows represent, specifically in the context of the LGBTQ+ community. I’m inspired by Gilbert Baker (who designed the very first pride flag) and in my way I’m trying to continue his legacy.
Do you ever translate your dreams into your work?
People often say my work is dreamy but unfortunately I don’t usually remember my own dreams! Dream clairvoyance runs in my family so I wish I could! I definitely daydream though, and my Instagram shows how I look at the world when I’m spacing out 👽
Tumblr media
What’s the weirdest source of inspiration for you?
90’s toys! I guess it’s not that weird that I’m inspired by them but a lot of them were super weird. Like the rainbow koosh balls? And those tiny naked troll dolls with gems in their belly buttons? Furbies! My Little Pony! Slinkies! Those weird liquid tubes with the glitter in them! I don’t know what was in the water in the 90’s but it was a really awesome time to be a kid.
Tumblr media
What makes you the happiest?
I’m happiest when I see people living their most authentic, weirdest, most insane, least-socially-acceptable selves. That’s what I hope my work does for people. It’s an invitation to connect to your inner child and discover a more vibrant tomorrow, one that honors the rainbow of gender and sexual expression.

Note
Would it be overkill if I asked for all of them?
How about 1, 3 through 8, and 11, 12 and 13? Oh wait, is that too much? Sorry if that's too much! ( > w < ') (I just love you and GioGio together❤)
It’d be a shame if I answered them all right here right now, during my break *eyes emoji* *eyes emoji* *eyes emoji*
Thank you so much for sending this in! ily friend. ♥♥♥
@star-birthmark said: Alright so I'm gonna pull a Lena and just ask for all the questions. Is that good? Great. Love ya
I was just thinking about you doing the same to me so HA I read your mind. ASAsask. Thank you so much <3
Under the cut for those not interested :D i did not proofread bc my head hurts ;w;
1.       Does your F/O have a birthmark? (or any type of freckles or beauty marks?)
Beside the glorious star birthmark (which I know I have a spicy hc about uwu) Gio has this super curious and small birthmark on his back, it’s not that noticeable unless you see him closely uwuwuwu.
2.       Is your F/O the type to volunteer to their community?
I mean, he’s,,, literally a mafia boss. His posture on Passione and his work is far from honest, but I feel like he’d actually would open shelters or donate to good causes, and since I hc him as a lawyer, perhaps he volunteers from time to time so he can help people with cases, obviously he doesn’t accept any money from them, as he knows what it’s like.
3.       Does your F/O the type to be giving or to take?
Younger Giorno (I’m not talking from a romantic aspect, calm down please), is the one to always give and get surprised when he gets something in return —the adult Gio from my ship knows how to give and receive equally.
What I’m trying to say is yes, but I don’t know where yet, haven’t thought a lot about that.
4.       Does your F/O have any battle scars?
Better yet —is GER able to regenerate cells fully? That would make him like a super cell, you know. No but seriously, say GER is able to do so, and Giorno wouldn’t have any scares from the events of VA; but what if his moral called for him to do so, to let his skin carry some of them. Say, a scar from Narancia’s last moments on his chest, unnoticeable now due to the tattoo on his chest.
5.       Does your F/O wear make up? (Do you think they would be open to wearing makeup if they don’t wear it daily?)
I feel like he’d wear the casual lipstick from time to time, but not really always. Unlesss someone *wink wink* convines him to do his makeup one day so he can try it.
6.       Has your F/O ever dye their hair or worn a wig?
Nah.
7.       What is your F/O fashion taste?
ignore the boob window and think about luke Hemmings or this. Exquisite, would give him kith.
8.       How tall is your F/O?
1.98 cm uwuwuwuwuw
10.   When if your F/O birthday?
9.       What is your F/O’s blood type?
AB.
April 16. ♥
11.   Does your F/O know how to cook? If so are they good at it?
He knows how to cook, yes, but he’s not that good —somehow I feel like his coffee would taste LIKE HEAVEN.
12.   What is your F/O favorite flavor?  (sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami (savory))
Sweet, definitely. When he’s a bit tired from it, though, he goes for bitter things.
13.   If your F/O could be a fan of any video game what do you think it would be?
Metal Gear Solid 4.
14.   What type of aesthetic does you F/O have?
The sense of freedom when you glance at the sunrise. If that makes sense of course.
15.   What color if your F/O eyes?
Turquoise! So pretty aaaaa uwu.
17.   If you could matching tattoos what would it be?
16.   Does your F/O have any tattoos? If not do they like or hate the concept of tattoos?
An owl on his chest, a vine on his index from his left hand and a sunflower on his ring finer; he’s thinking of getting something for the twins, but he’s not sure about what yet.
A small Aloe Vera potted plant on our necks (based off an ask I remember getting a while ago —if that person is still around, your idea might come true buddy).
18.   Does your F/O have any piercings?
I die for the thought of him with a lip ring. But I don’t really think he has any of them, the lip ring is a matter of,,,, other impulses akdjslkd.
19.   Is your F/O a cake or pie person?
Both. Both is good. Has a leaning to pie, but loves both.
20.   Is your F/O a morning or night person?
Night person.
21.   Is your F/O a coffee or tea person?
Coffee, I don’t think he likes tea *that* much.
22.   Is your F/O half empty or half full type of person?
I’m not sure, tbh.
23.   Does your F/O have a pet? If not in canon what do you think they would have if given the chance?
Listen, a panther would make the best pet for him. But I think he’s a cat person. Not like he doesn’t like dogs, but a cat is probably something he enjoys most.
24.   Is your F/O the type to want to live in the city or live out in the country?
City.
25.   Does your F/O like to swim?
Yes.
26.   What harry potter house would your F/O be in? (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin)
Nah fam, I’m not really interested on HP, sorry.
27.   If your F/O was in “avatar: the last air bender” what type of bender would they be? (air, water, earth, and fire)
Some of you will kill me for this but I haven’t watched it, ever. :D
28.   Is your F/O LGBT+?
Nope, at least not for me. You are free to headcanon him as you wish. Pleadon’tstartdramathisisnotmeanttooffendanyone.
29.   Does your F/O have any artistic hobbies? (Knitting, drawing, painting, etc)
Drawing, but it’s most for stress relief.
30.   What’s a piece of clothing your F/O is never seen without? (glasses, a necklace, hat, etc)
The arrow he hangs around his neck or just carries around hidden.
31.   What type of scent does your F/O remind you of?
There’s this perfume I absolutely love and I can’t really describe it, but it’s WildCountry.
32.   What’s something you see often that has little to no relation to your F/O but always reminds you of them?
Flowers and vines :,)
33.   Do you have any silly nicknames or pet names for your F/O?
A LOT.
34.   What does your F/O house/apartment look like? (or what do you think it looks like)
If we talk about his years of “I live alone yeee” then pretty much no decoration, excepts for the plants or books he keeps —overall, what you could call monochromatic. Once we get married, we pick a style, with classical sculptures and roman like architecture
35.   What season reminds you of your F/O? (winter, spring, summer, fall)
Fall.
36.   Have you ever had a dream with your F/O in it?
Yes uwu.
37.   Does your F/O play any musical instruments?
No really.
38.   What’s a song that reminds you of your F/O when you hear?
Gold by Prince.
39.   What is your relationship like with your F/O?
We,,, in love,,,, yes.
40.   How long have you been with your F/O? (or at least been interested in them?)
Interested in him,,,,,, I’m not sure if one or two years?? But in the “”””storyline””” seven years.
41.   Where is your F/O from? (as in born)
Japan.
42.   Is your F/O the type to read reviews, or just go with their gut
Better yet, contacts.
43.   What does your F/O’s Saturdays usually look like?
Some paperwork at home studio, comfy causal clothes (black jeans and white tee, barefoot).
44.   What is your F/O’s most valuable possession?
The arrow lmao.
45.   What’s a fad you can see your F/O taking part of?
Analyzing music together!! :D
46.   does your F/O prefer to work alone or with a team?
Team.
47.   How well does your F/O know tech? (such as computers, smart phones)
I feel like he knows a lot asdkad.
48.   What’s some advice your F/O would tell you?
“Stop thinking you are not enough, stop thinking no one loves you, stop thinking you are worthless; stop with all your self-destruction.”
49.   What animal reminds you of your F/O?
Lion!! :D
51.   What’s the most interesting fact you know about your F/O?
50.   What color reminds you of your F/O?
Gold AND turquoise
Canon or made by me?? The first would be his favorite musician, because OH I like that musician too, even before knowing him. The second it’s about his scars.

damian!!
my son, my child, my reason to be... <3
- favorite thing about them: i love damian’s innate goodness and love for animals & sentient beings! he, i think in a way, kinda connects to animals in a way he never could w other humans - and i think it’s bc he sees himself in them! they’re innocent and are products of their environment and i think sometimes he feels captive like they do, so he wants them to be free and to not be hurt and to be given love & care (this may be Too Deep and Incorrect but i just want my baby boy SAFE and HAPPY)
- least favorite thing about them: this isn’t because of HIM but it’s bc of his writers and i despise when they make him completely and utterly callous with no regard for others because you KNOW he does care and i also hate when people call him bratty and a demon bc that’s just a traumatized lil brown boy! leave my kid ALONE!
- favorite line: “no excuses, runt. do not dishonor your family’s cause! all of their hope now falls to you!”
- brOTP: y’all KNOW i love supersons so much and him & jon kent are just the best friends in all of the land and i love these babies <3
- OTP: he is a child so i’m gonna say damian + therapy/happiness <3
- nOTP: anything related to batcest/anything incestous/pedophilic in nature
- random headcanon: on his off days he likes to volunteer at the local animal shelter! he knows the sweet old ladies by name and they’re always shocked that new massive donations have come in to help the shelter & the animals in them! damian never says anything about it so they think it’s an anonymous kind donor when it’s actually him :’) he loves to buy toys for the animals and will leave sweet treats for the sweet people who work there <3 the old ladies LOVE damian and have also adopted him hehe
- unpopular opinion: some of y’all are TOO hard on this kid! he’s traumatized and was born and bred to be a trained killer/assassin and y’all are shocked when he gets angry and lashes out! he’s a baby boy and has no healthy emotional outlet - what do you expect??? i’m taking this boy to therapy & for some ice cream... don’t want dc freaks even LOOKING at my son
- song i associate with them: “prodigal son” by rationale!
- favorite picture of them:

Without warning, Robotnik draped himself across Zinnia's desk and studied his nails while he spoke. "Dr Frost! You like other people, right? At the very least, you're good at acting as if you're interested in their mundane lives and their idiotic, self-induced personal issues! Why don't you write the Yearly Holiday Memo in my place? I could use a little me-time after this hellish year I've had." He glanced up at her and grinned. "Thanks in advance!"
Zinnia looked a bit amused at the way Dr. Robotnik settled on her desk like a giant cat and “requested” that she write the memo in his place. She had half a mind to say no but she couldn’t just refuse to do something work-related that her boss tells her to do. Besides, it’s actually an excellent opportunity to plan a nice holiday event! So, she after finishing up her work, she wrote a nice memorandum and emailed it to all the employees, with a carbon copy emailed to Robotnik, of course.
>-<->-<->-<->-<
TO: All Employees CC: Dr. Ivo Robotnik FROM: Dr. Zinnia Frost, Dr. Ivo Robotnik’s assistant DATE: 25/11/2020 SUBJECT: Annual Christmas Holiday Memorandum
Dear employees,
I, on behalf of Dr. Robotnik, would like to extend my warm wishes to you and your family for Christmas and would also like to thank you for all your hard work and sheer dedication and hope that this will continue for years to come by.
To celebrate this joyous festival, I invite you all to relax and unite together with a light and happy heart at the Christmas barbeque that will take place on December 12th, starting at 3:00 PM at the main Compound garden. There will be plenty of drinks and a Christmas tree will be lit at 4:00 PM. We’ll have a small band playing traditional carols as well so feel free to sing along! And don’t be scared if our CEO shows up dressed as the Grinch! I will handle him uwu.
Additionally, please be informed that this event is for employees only. I sincerely apologise for that but due to security reasons, you are not allowed to bring along anyone who is not an employee. But the upside is that this event is free of cost, of course. I hope you all attend and enjoy it to the fullest.
Those of you who would like to attend, please register here by 5th December, 2:00 PM so that we can cater enough food for everyone!

On another note, I know you all want to make sure the holidays are enjoyed and appreciated by your whole family, but planning an itinerary is easier said than done. After all, balancing busy schedules and interests of the entire family is no easy task. So, to help you out, I will suggest some fun holiday activities you and your family can try:
1. Attend a Tree Lighting Ceremony
Many cities or landmarks will have a ceremony honouring the lighting of their tree. It’s a night where crowds of people attend the festival, dressed in their warmest attire and gather around the tree waiting for it to spring to life. This will really get you in the Christmas spirit!
2. Connect with an Old Friend
The holiday season is the perfect time reconnect up with an old friend that you haven’t met in a while. So, reach out to and set up a time to get together. Who knows, they may end up becoming one of your best friends!
3. Try New Recipes
Whether it’s baked goodies or soothing drinks, you and your family will enjoy making some delicious treats. These are some of my favourites:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Be mindful of any food allergies you may have, though!
4. Try Out a Winter Sport
Ice skating, sledding and skiing are great sports to enjoy during the winter, and an even better way to get your kids up and outdoors during their holiday break. During the Christmas season, outdoor ice skating rinks start popping up. There are even indoor skating rinks! So, bundle up, put on a pair of blades and glide around the rink!
5. Do a Random acts of Kindness, Donate, Volunteer
Christmas is all about giving, even if what you give are just small, random acts of kindness. They are some of the most fulfilling and sweetest things you could ever do. Donate toys to children. Try your local homeless shelter or children’s hospital. Trust me, giving a gift to a child in need and seeing them light up with joy is one of the most rewarding things you could do. You can also donate food and warm clothes to the unfortunate people who need them to help them get through the frigid winter season. Gather some from friends, family and bring them to the local homeless shelter. Volunteering is also a very easy way to help and spread some joy. Of course, volunteering is a great thing to do at any time of the year, but during the holidays there are even more opportunities. Pick a cause close to your heart and spend the day giving. Find opportunities near you on the Volunteer Match or the United Way website.
6. Start a New Family Tradition
When in doubt of what to do during the holidays, Christmas is the perfect time to start a new tradition that will live on in years to come. It can be anything like a special dish you cook every holiday season, volunteering at the local shelter, Christmas carolling or wrapping your kids in gift paper and rolling them under the tree for fun. The possibilities are limitless! You’re sure to find something you’ll look forward to every year.
7. Make a Homemade Gift
There is always something special about giving and receiving a homemade gift. Everyone loves to receive them from their loved ones as a lot of time and effort is put into creating them, making them all the more special. It could be a glass frame with pressed wildflowers or a snow globe—the possibilities are endless!
8. Have a Christmas Craft Party
Get the Holiday fun started by hosting a Christmas craft party. Set up crafts, invite your child’s friends, and have a few seasonal snacks to carry them through the party. Here are many crafting ideas that you could enjoy making on that day. Whichever crafts you choose, having a day like this will be fun and memorable.
9. Watch a Holiday Movie Favourite
Slip into your comfiest pjs, make some popcorn and have a holiday movie marathon with your loved ones. Some of my favourites are:
Mickey's Christmas Carol
Disney's A Christmas Carol
Klaus
Home Alone
The Nightmare Before Christmas
10. Kiss Someone Under the Mistletoe
Who says there’s no time for romance? Set up mistletoe in your home and lead your beloved partner under it to have the splendid excuse of kissing them.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, remember to look after yourself and your mental health. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or stressed time to time hence I encourage anyone experiencing mental health issues to seek support. Remember, it is okay to ask for help, even for the small things so they don’t become big things. If you’re unsure about how to go on about this, or would even just like a friendly chat, feel free to contact me directly by email and I will do my best to assist you.
I once again would like to express my gratitude towards you all and wish you and your family a Merry Christmas!

What do you do when you begin working with a deity? Where do you go to deepen your relationship with them once you’ve established communication with them? A great place to start is to begin leaving offerings for them. Whether you’re a new pagan or experienced pagan, leaving offerings can be a great way to establish and to continue a relationship with a deity. Do your research. How did the worshipers of old honor them? What do modern followers commonly offer? What are common associations and correspondences with this deity?
Voluntary Acts of Service
I want to begin with acts of service because I think there are a lot of interesting and unique opportunities here to honor Anubis while also serving the community, many of them things that people may not think about.
Volunteer and/or donate at a local dog rescue shelter. Anubis holds all living things close to his heart, but canines are especially dear to him. Most local animal shelters will never turn down volunteers – they often are looking for people to walk the dogs, interact and socialize with them, clean their cages, and help with the distribution of medicine and feeding times.
If you can’t find the time to volunteer, consider donating to the shelter. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shelter that didn’t need food, towels, newspapers, cat litter, or cleaning supplies. Even spending a few dollars to buy a bag of dog food can go a long way for dogs that desperately need care. Be sure to check with the shelter before donating to see what their needs are and what they accept. Sometimes they have specific needs.
You may even find shelters for rescued wolves and other canines. Near where I live in Indiana, there is a wolf facility (aptly named Wolf Park) dedicated to research and education related to these beautiful animals. They also welcome volunteers, though you may need special training before you can work with the animals in any capacity. Even if you don’t work directly with the animals, perhaps you can assist in the public education programs, or donate to their cause.
Perhaps working with animals isn’t your thing. That’s fine; don’t feel guilty about that. I spent a good amount of time in Anubis in the Darkness of Winter talking about Anubis’ role in medicine and healing. Hospitals and hospice facilities often accept volunteers to serve in a variety of roles. Nursing homes often welcome volunteers to socialize with residents.
Cemeteries
Being associated with the dead, it makes sense that one common association with Anubis is cemeteries and places of the dead. Cemeteries usually have caretakers, though the extent of the care may simply be to periodically cut the grass, depending on the size, location, and funding available.
Cleaning up trash and debris may be an option for voluntary service, though it would be best to check with the local government or institution in charge of the care of the cemetery to check whether or not it’s acceptable to do such a thing. Cleaning up a cemetery without permission may raise unwanted suspicion, even if it’s done with the best of intentions.
Leaving flowers on a stranger’s grave is a way to not only honor the memory of a dead person’s spirit, but also to give something in service to the Lord of the Dead, and you certainly don’t need permission to do so. Many people do things to honor strangers. Visit any local cemetery around any patriotic holiday, and you will often find people leaving flags and/or flowers at the grave of strangers. The same could be done in honor of Anubis with flowers, or even stopping for just a moment’s thought in honor of the deceased person, even someone you don’t know.
Creative Endeavors
Do you have a creative passion? Music, painting, sculpting, crafting, writing, drawing…these are all common artistic endeavors where many people have talents. Why not dedicate some of these to Anubis? Draw, paint, or sculpt something in his honor and put it on your altar, which I will talk about in the next section. I’ve seen some amazing artwork done dedicated to Anubis. Though I am not much of an artist myself, I still enjoy doodling and drawing in dedication to him.
Do you play any kind of music or sing? Dedicate a song to Anubis. It could be something you wrote yourself, or even a song you hear that reminds you of him.
Writing is one of the ways that I connect with Anubis. I write a lot. I do much better when I can sit down and really craft something into words the way that I want it. I keep a blog here, mostly about Anubis, but I also do a lot of personal writing that never gets published and is kept between me and Anubis. I know a lot of people who write stories and poems dedicated to their chosen deity.
Set up an Altar
Setting up an altar in your home is one of the most iconic ways to honor a deity. You should include some type of representation of Anubis, if you can. You can find many different statues of Anubis, ranging from small to large and in various colors and depictions. Many of them are inexpensive. A piece of artwork, even something hand-drawn yourself, would work well to include. There’s nothing that dictates it needs to be anything particular or something expensive. Make it meaningful and personal.
Add a couple of candles, in black and/or gold color (representing the light within the darkness). Not out of the broom closet? Find something such as a wolf, or even a dog, to include somewhere on a shelf. Perhaps add a candle to go along with it. It can be as simple and nonchalant as you wish.
There are many other things you can include on your altar, ranging from stones, incense, herbs, food and drink, or other signs and symbols. Dark stones and stones are commonly associated with Anubis, especially if they carry the properties of protection and transformation. Obsidian, smoky quartz, black onyx, labradorite, jet, and hematite are all common stones associated with Anubis.
Ritualistic Offerings
Another way to honor Anubis that may feel more traditional to some would be ritualistic offerings. Food, stones, incense, altars, and herbs are common things that come to mind for many.
Some of my favorite incense to burn in offering to Anubis include anything with a spiced, musky scent such as frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh, and cedarwood, though you may find other blends that work well. Some metaphysical stores even have a pre-made “Egyptian musk” blend, or using a similar name, that could be used in offering as well.
Food and drink were also common offerings to the gods and goddesses, the most common being beer and bread. It remains a common offering among modern Kemetic practitioners. There are some interesting myths involving this, including one involving the goddess Sekhmet (goddess of war and healing). Dark beers and ales as well as dark breads are common offerings to Anubis.
One of the symbols most commonly associated with Anubis are the ankh. The ankh looks similar to a cross with a loop at the top. The ankh was a hieroglyphic symbol that represented life, or the breath of life. The mortal life was seen as being just one piece of the journey of the soul, and the ankh represented not only that mortal life, but the afterlife as well.
Once you’ve established some regular things you can do in offering to Anubis, consider setting up a daily practice in honor of the Lord of the Night. There are lots of things that you can do to establish a daily practice. I will talk about some of these in a future article.

LOCATION: Hope’s Door Women’s Shelter, March 13th, 2019
NOTES: Lola and Santana bond while volunteering at the women’s shelter.
LOLA ALVAREZ
Round two at the women’s shelter and Lola was all too happy to have company this round. Maybe it was something that had to do with her inclination toward lost souls. Maybe it was because she finally felt fulfilled, or wanted, or needed, or something along those lines. Maybe she liked feeling important, or recognized, or like she mattered. Lola found Santana seated in the shelter, and pulled up a chair next to her. “How are you doing, babe?” She asked softly, raising one eyebrow as an inquiry. “Did I thank you for coming yet today?”
SANTANA LOPEZ
Santana would never admit it, because she was aware she was a crap person but this admission would put that over the edge, but she was at the shelter to spend time with Lola. It was more about putting herself out there to the other girl than it was about helping people, and she was aware of how bad that was. It wasn't the worst or anything; helping people. It was making her feel a type of way, though, and it was good at when her mind wandered, Lola appeared. "Hmm?" she shrugged, "I'm good." Santana would remember the 'babe' thing later, "You may have, but I don't mind hearing it more," she grinned. Santana people watched for a moment, "How often do you do this?" she asked.
LOLA ALVAREZ
Grinning, Lola pulled a water bottle out of her bag and took a sip. She cleared her throat, wanting to make sure her voice didn’t get too hoarse from talking and listening. She was trying so hard to keep her emotions in check, but it was hard.
“I try and get here once a week,” Lola shrugged. “It’s tough with Mimi, but I love it so much. It’s a nice way to keep myself and my mental health in check.”
SANTANA LOPEZ
Santana nodded. She couldn’t exactly understand how someone could purposefully keep coming back to such a depressing place, but she knew people like Lola were important to the people who needed it. “You’re a better person than me,” she offered up a small smile. Santana didn’t want to say how bad she felt. Mostly for her reasons for coming, but more so for the fact that she’d ignored places like this for so long that the reality of life was really hitting her. “I admire you for it. Like. For all the shit you do...” she trailed off not really knowing how exactly to ever say the way she felt, especially in a situation that was throwing her for a loop.
LOLA ALVAREZ
Lola shook her head gently, wanting to reach out and touch Santana’s shoulder, but thought better of it. “Hey, it’s not about that. You’re here, that means something. And even if you can’t relate to their stories, you’re pretty easy on the eyes.” Lola bit down on her lower lip as Santana continued to speak. Volunteering and helping people was her passion, and she’d been in these women’s shoes before. It wasn’t about being admired. Not to lola. “I I came here when I was thirteen,” Lola began, not totally sure if she could trust Santana with this kind of information, but that made her want to share it even more. “The people who tried to take me before Mimi did. I punched their daughter. I had nowhere to go. And I wonder what I would have said to someone in my position. Like, a young girl ought to stand a better chance in this world.” She shrugged one shoulder, unsure of how else to put it. “people need to be reminded that life goes on even when bad things happen. There’s a sisterhood in all this.”
SANTANA LOPEZ
Santana listened intently. She could tell the moment she'd arrived how much the shelter meant to Lola, so trying her best not to fuck it up was high on her mind. It would have been easy to walk in there and pretend that she didn't care or that this was easy and not a big deal. The look on Lola's face while there, though, told Santana that it was time to be serious. That was only confirmed when Lola started to open up to her. Like. Actually open up. "Shit," she sighed, wishing she was better at emotions or talking in general. "Thanks for telling me," Santana cringed a little, because she was sure there were better words to say, "Not gonna lie, I always thought Mimi was you're like, always thing." Santana took a moment to look around, "When my parents kicked me out and I came here, I walked into this place and walked right out..." It was something she blocked out of her memory for the most part. Santana didn't like to relive her impulsive decision to move to New York, "But, you know, walking in with my Gucci's didn't really look good."
LOLA ALVAREZ
Despite thinking better of it, Lola put one hand on Santana's shoulder. "Everybody comes from a different walk of life," she shrugged, knowing that it was one thing to compare yourself to the rest of the world, but a women's shelter was a place where everyone who needed a place to belong, belonged. "But I'm sorry that you didn't feel welcome here. I'm glad that you found your stride in New York, you know? Think about the Santana who walked into this shelter, and the Santana you are now. You should be so proud of yourself for everything you've accomplished."
SANTANA LOPEZ
Santana smiled. She felt like she was the last person who deserved even a little of the kindness and understanding that Lola was able to provide, but she accepted it nonetheless. "You're really something," she sighed, looking around, feeling like she should be being more helpful somehow. She looked up at Lola and smiled, "So... How many people here might be down for a free show?" Santana asked, not knowing how appropriate it was to offer show tickets to homeless people, "Cause, I get crapton of tickets for 'family' so I figure they could go somewhere better, you know? Probs could hook some of these chicks up with some clothes and everything too if that was a thing they'd be into."
LOLA ALVAREZ
Lola felt her heart warm up at Santana's inquiry, but that was nothing compared to the smile that beamed across her lips. "I used to know how to make clothes on a sewing machine, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for me to pick back up." She stood up and knelt down beside Santana, suddenly feeling the most comfortable and overjoyed that she had in a long time. "We make a great team."
SANTANA LOPEZ
Santana rolled her eyes, "As cute as the image of you at a sewing machine is, I meant I could get some clothes." She figured if she mentioned it to the cast she could get some money and donations together, if anything, it would help make the show look better if they weren't into the idea for the act of just being a decent human. "But I'd sit and watch you make some too." When Lola kneeleed next to her, she felt vulnerable for some reason, hoping she wasn't blushing, "Yeah," she replied softly, "I think we do."

I first met Geffen in 2014 while volunteering at the LA Food Bank, both there with a group called Have a Hart Day. Right off the bat, I knew Geffen was a kind-hearted person.
Her charisma shone through as I found myself comfortable in her presence and quickly becoming friends with her even though I am an introverted person.
So when I found out that Geffen (@LAearpers) was going to be coordinating the volunteer events for Earp Your Community LA , I couldn’t think of anyone better to do the job than her. Being a volunteer coordinator can be hard work and daunting at times but Geffen is one of the most hardworking, humble, kind people I know. Always there to lend a hand. Always making sure people feel comfortable and cared for. You can always count on her being there for her people, not just a leader but as a friend.
Geffen, always the one taking the picture, never the one in it. I’m glad she’s getting this chance to be in the spotlight. She deserves it. ~ @TheLesleyEst
Tumblr media
Tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Geffen and I’m an Earper living in Los Angeles who loves building positive communities and giving back. Beyond local causes, I’m especially passionate about global access to clean drinking water.
Tell us about the Earp Your Community project/event you organized
The first Earp Your Community event I organized was with LA on Cloud 9’s Homeless Services Picnic. It involved raising money for donations (food, hygiene supplies, etc) and participating in the picnic. During the event, volunteers served food and gave out clothes and supplies to people in need. Because it was right before Halloween a craft station was also set up with face painting and pumpkin decorating.
The experience was great! It was such a welcome, festive environment with Halloween music playing and many people in costumes. Our Earper group spent the majority of the time at the clothes station organizing donations and helping people find what they needed.
Tumblr media
What motivated you to plan an EarpYourCommunity Event?
Forming a volunteer group has actually been on my mind for years, but I never knew who to start one with. When I began getting invested in the Wynonna Earp fandom and found out about Earp It Forward/Earp Your Community, I knew I found the perfect fit! I couldn’t get the idea out of my head so even though I’m usually very private online I decided to start a group in LA.
Why did you choose this particular project, organization, cause, etc?
I chose the Homeless Services Picnic for the first event because Los Angeles has the second largest homeless population in the United States. It’s a HUGE problem here and I’m always looking for ways to give back. We also volunteered with the LA Food Bank in December 2018 and have been volunteering regularly with LA Animal Services since November.
What was the most challenging part? Do you have any advice for others that want to plan an event of their own?
The most challenging part of planning events is dealing with unexpected changes (for example, a date change for our food bank event) and then trying to communicate those changes. For anyone trying to plan an event of your own, just make sure to go with the flow :) Things come up so just be prepared to accommodate changes both related to the event and volunteers. My DMs are always open if anyone wants to bounce off EYC ideas.
Tumblr media
What else would you tell someone who is thinking about organizing an EarpYourCommunity event?
DO IT! Seriously, you’ll meet great people and have an amazing time.
What was the most memorable part of either organizing the project or the project itself?
I was pretty nervous that the first event just wouldn’t work out at all, but then we all had such a fun day volunteering and eating lunch together, so that will always be memorable.
Was there anything about the experience that surprised you?
I was surprised when Kat called upon Earpers to attend the animal shelter orientation with her. Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised given her big heart and dedication to this fandom. I was so excited to build off the momentum of that orientation and volunteer regularly with a group.
Tumblr media
What did you find the most rewarding about this experience?
Creating an opportunity for Earpers to meet and connect based on a shared passion for serving their community :)
Tell us about some of the people you met while volunteering.
Well, Kat Barrell for starters! She helped me meet an awesome group of Earpers who I now get to see every few weeks at the shelter.
Everyone I met has been so great. Funnily enough, I also reconnected with my friend Lesley (@TheLesleyEst) who I met volunteering with a different fandom years back! So that was another cool surprise from this whole experience.
Tumblr media
What does EarpYourCommunity mean to you?
Earp Your Community means taking the values of this fandom into “the real world” and pursuing causes you care about alongside like-minded people. It’s community, family, generosity, and all that good stuff we don’t see enough in the world.
Would you organize or take part in an EarpYourCommunity event again?
Definitely! I plan to do this regularly for the foreseeable future. I can’t wait to see how this initiative grows and evolves.
Tumblr media
Is there anything we missed that you’d like us to know?
I just want to shout out my Twitter-less friend Declan (side note: GET TWITTER) who introduced me to Wynonna Earp in the first place and has been super supportive about this whole project. I wouldn’t have done this without their encouragement and involvement.
Also, thank you, Kristen and Sarah, for always being a great support!

Starting a rescue is a lot of work and from what I have learned depends on a lot of things from where you are going to do the rescue, what kind(s) of animals you are going to rescue, are you going to be private or public, for profit or not for profit, how are you going to fund the rescue, what experiences and knowledge do you have, and how much research have you done just to name a few.
Tumblr media
If someone tells me they would love to open a rescue I now tell them I can give them some tips and information to help them get started with research and how to determine if rescue is right for them and what information and resources they have to look into before making the actual decision to do animal rescue. I also tell them that it is not as easy as it looks to get it started and to run a rescue. I also let them know that there could be roadblocks or there can be hidden miracles that can affect the rescue plans. If one is determined and serious about doing rescue even the toughest of roadblocks will not hold them back.
Start to a new and better life from living in abandoned property trying to fend for ourselves.
I have had my share of roadblocks and miracles, some of those roadblocks were enough to shut me down emotionally due to the nature of the roadblocks which I admit was very disrespectful on another person’s part but also was unethical not to mention was defamation and did actually cause so much damage that I am still struggling to get back what I lost. I did shut down emotionally and mentally for a short time, but also sought therapy as a rescue can be a cruel and rough task at times and both my doctor and therapist both demanded I not give up and get back up and running and restart my rescue. I did just that and once I got started the doctors said never stop as they see the difference it made doing the rescue to when I didn’t do it. I have learned tons of stuff but rescue is an ever learning experience and it is not for everyone.
I am determined to succeed and I made a promise to me and the animals that I am not going to quit, not going give up but rather keep going to help animals in need and pet owners when possible until I die. I have set limits to make sure I do not get overwhelmed and so that I have time and funds to care for the ones I have at one time, and it keeps me out of trouble. I have policies in place to assure that the animals stay healthy as much as possible as well as to not spread disease and prevent animals from getting hurt, and making sure they get attention for socializing and training as needed. I don’t rush the animals through my rescue but rather give them the time to work on their skills while they find their forever homes. I have made some wonderful contacts and networked with some wonderful rescues and rescuers who are very nice to help me and me them when possible. I believe that rescues and shelters should work as one big team and not as competitors, and not as enemies. Although money is needed to do rescue it is not about the money, although it is good to know people and businesses it is not about popularity, even though there are so many animals in need it is not about competing to see who can save the most animals before another and its not  competition to get the funds before someone else does, and its not a competition to be better than someone else so you can be popular. We should help each other any way we can, share posts for help, share posts for adoptions, help with funding or vetting if the funds are there, help transport if possible, and definitely not judge each other. If a rescue sees another rescue struggling they should not be mean and shove them down but rather see if there is something they can do to help them to get them back on track. Such as offer to take a few critters, or share some supplies or help with transport or maybe help other areas. Before you go turning someone in or running them down talk to them and see how you can help, it may take a bit for them to trust you but give them the time. But if after while not too long if they seem to not be able to come out of their struggle or refuse help right out then go ahead and report them, But if you report them, you better first make sure that they are actually struggling or doing something that is putting animals at risk or they are committing a crime, make sure you have evidence to include maybe pictures, or actual physical witnesses who can prove they were there physically, not someone who said they were but have never been there and have not actually seen the situation. Also do not lash out at other rescues if you got into trouble yourself or if you could get into trouble, Please worry about yourself first.
The funding is the hardest part along with those animals that come in sick or injured, well better include the people who try to slow you down or from doing your job. One can request or ask for donations whether non profit or not there is no law against it but there is a regulation that states in MN at least that if you get above the set limit of donations you have to pay taxes on the excess of the limit collected, and if non profit is tax free but still have to charge taxes on some things you sell and your adoption fees, and yes donations are not tax deductible if donated to a for-profit rescue but if they are non profit or 501c3 donations can be a tax deductible as long as its within the guidelines.  Gants are out there too but easier to find and get if you are non-profit 501c3, as well as sponsorships and pledges. Most people will not donate unless you are a not for profit group.
Another thing to think about when contemplating to open a rescue or not is what is the demand like in your area is there other rescues or shelters if so how many and what do they offer. But also check city and county ordinances, regulations and licensing and permit guidelines and who do you need to register with if you open a rescue. The people I found were a great source to talk to for some of this is the sheriff, city and county commissioners, the mayor, veterinarians, planning and zoning, USDA, other rescues and shelters, Secretary of State, IRS, non-profit attorney and or animal law attorney, and the internet for other resources.  Please also think about where are you going to get your funds, and supplies, you can talk to suppliers, retailers, wholesalers, even manufacturers to see if they would work with you and give you donations or a discounted price to help save funds to feed, clean and care for the animals. Equipment you may need while doing rescue also include carriers, kennels or crates, tools, shelving, file cabinet, computer and printer, phone, fax, shelters for outside animals, live traps, and other related equipment.
I always let people know too that with rescue comes a lot of stress, emotional and mental strain, and physical work. You have to deal with animals that may and will die, animals that are injured and sick that need a lot of care including treatments and they do not always cooperate, unruly animals sometimes can also cause a lot of stress and mental and emotional drain, and then there are those rare but fierce people who like to do bad things go rescues and the animals and those who say very mean things to hurt rescues and animals, and the biggest one is getting overwhelming calls for help or seeing so many animals on the euthanization list or animals in danger of being hurt, killed and are being killed and hurt and you cannot do anything about it. People need to know that when doing rescue and you are scrolling media or emails and you see there is an urgent case that needs attention now or animal is at risk of death or danger of being injured or thrown out like a piece of garbage but your to your limit, one may get the urge to speak up and take the animals(s) despite they are already to their physical capabilities to care for what animals they already have, those people need to step back and think about the consequences and think hard before actually stepping forward and taking in that animal. They need to realize that adding the extras add to the physical and mental strain to make sure all are getting their proper food and water, if needed treatments, then to clean litter boxes, dog/cat kennels, making sure they are vetted if needed, posting for adoption those who are ready, socializing time, bathing if needed, cleaning living areas for the animals thoroughly at least once a week to every day, exercising the animals as needed, making sure documentation and paperwork is done on daily basis preferable immediately after each animal care or end of a task performed. Then there is the answering calls, emails, interviewing for adoptions and if used fosters, transporting and so much more.
I am not trying to make rescue sound impossible or to scare people away from doing it but want them to know that its not all that easy as it seems, they see the adoptions and the posts on social media about events or happenings or news but they don’t see all the detail that is entailed in doing rescue. I am happy to share my experiences and to give resources and references to those interested in doing rescue and also will tell them volunteer at a few different rescues or shelters or both and get a feel what it is all about. It’s a great way to get a start on what to expect. I have helped others who just started out doing rescue when they needed ideas, resources and what I learned is that some will be thankful others will not, and I don’t care I always help where I can even if they do not treat me with respect and appreciate the help I gave them. I appreciate all those rescues out in the world who work their behinds off and help other rescues as well. They are awesome and the true meaning of being a team member and a rescuer. I look up to those rescuers but also will stand behind them and for them.
With this post I hope this helps those who want to understand more what rescue is and what it is about but also to understand that along with the exciting and happy times that come with success such as adoptions, a successful fundraiser, being recognized for your hard work comes the sad, angry, frustrating times that come with lack of funding, lack of volunteers to help with operations, with death of animals, with the report of animal in need that is abused, neglected, being rehomed for unnecessary reason, with the death of animal you rescue and that was sick or injured and despite all you did it still did not make it, and then there comes the burnout if you do not make family time, and don’t set limits.
So you’re interested in animal rescue… Starting a rescue is a lot of work and from what I have learned depends on a lot of things from where you are going to do the rescue, what kind(s) of animals you are going to rescue, are you going to be private or public, for profit or not for profit, how are you going to fund the rescue, what experiences and knowledge do you have, and how much research have you done just to name a few.

Health Issues and Kittens
Long Personal Post:
The TL;DR Version is: I’m getting kittens and I need name suggestions.
Back in January, I lost my cat Columbia.  I’d had her for eighteen years.  It was really hard, basically a death in the family.  I loved that cat more than half of my family.  I knew that I want another cat, because the house is lonely without another buddy; BUT, I knew that I didn’t want to replace her, so I figured that I would look into after I got back from San Diego Comic Con.  I didn’t want to get a cat in June only to leave it for two weeks in July.  That wouldn’t be fair to the cat.
So Comic Con came and went -- only this time I came home and got really sick.
I have heavy irregular periods.  One started on the last day of Comic Con, and this bleeding was beyond heavy.  I got home, still tired, and finally, a couple of days (Thursday) later I called my doctor.  She put me on meds to stop the bleeding.  Still, I felt like garbage.  I was so tired.  My parents and I thought it was ConCrud.
I waited through the weekend and finally called again.  The doctor said it was just viral and to get fluids and rest.
Only I didn’t get better.  I couldn’t walk.  Walking from the bathroom to the bedroom was exhausting.  My thighs, chest, and head pounded YET I had ZERO problem breathing.  My chest was pounding YET I was taking deep breaths.  So, what the fuck.
I called my doctor AGAIN.  We did a follow-up appointment on Friday (so a week has gone by now).  They ordered blood work.  I went home --
And the doctor called me back.
My blood count came back at HALF its normal rates, and my iron levels were about a quarter of what they should be.  I was told to go to the hospital IMMEDIATELY.
They hospitalized me overnight.  I had two blood transfusions and an iron transfusion.  I was put on iron supplements.  I had to completely changed my diet for the next two months. My doctor told me I wasn’t allowed outside until the heatwave broke.
So, cats?
I periodically check the animal shelter’s website for cats.
I noticed a black cat named Max.  And, like! I had been thinking about getting two black kittens and naming them Max and Salem, after the best cats EVER.  My doctor’s office is by the animal shelter.  I took it as a sign.
I decided to stop in after my appointment.
The people at the animal shelter said that Max was a difficult case.  He was CRAZY BIG, and apparently, his owner dropped him off because they got a new kitten who didn’t like Max.  And the owner had actually taken Max BACK and then dropped him off AGAIN.  I was HORRIFIED when they told me this.  What the FUCK owner?  And I was worried was the original owner gonna want Max back?  So the people at the shelter basically warned me off Max.
Still, I was there. I went to look at the other cats.
Big mistake.
There was this kitten there that looks scared and overwhelmed, and I just related so hard, and I kind of bonded with them.  But I wasn’t ready for a cat.  I hadn’t been home in like a month.  I needed to kitty proof the house!  (and get new supplies since I donated all my extra chewy account supplies to the animal shelter after Columbia passed away.
I left.
I spent over 24 hours thinking about the kitten.
I emailed the shelter about the kitten, had it been adopted yet.
So, today, my mom had to meet my aunt and my grandmother in the town with the animal shelter.  My aunt is a like a Cat Whispers.  We all decided to go back to the shelter to check out the kitten and maybe find it a companion.
When I got there, I got in my email that the kitten had been taken to an offsite.
Sad, My aunt and I went into the shelter and started looking around.
AND THEN - there was a mix up! The kitten was still there!
But my aunt immediately was like “You can’t take that kitten, he’s in a group of three in the cage, and they should all be adopted together and you can’t break up the pair.”
And I had been there before.  I watched that kitten by the odd one out.  I was quite buying it, but I was willing to look at other because she’s good with cats, you know?
And MEANWHILE, there’s his older gentleman -- who totally looked like one of those intellectual snobs who was stupid pretentious and only fake liberal.  He had his eye on a cat that was in the same room as the kittens.
My aunt and I surf around more.  I ask her to bring Mom in, because Grandma was being restless and wanted to go.
Mom comes in.  The man is still in the room.  I show her the kitten.  We go to take it out of the cage, and one of the other ones tries to jump out and Mom has it half her hand and it scratches her and she is bleeding and the kitten ends up falling to the ground.
It lands on its feet and immediately starts exploring.
The guy loses his mind.  He LEFT the room and REPORTED us to reported us to a volunteer for mistreating the kittens.  The watched us the entire time and kept pointing at my mom.
Mom and I went to another room with kittens.  We talked about what to do -- should we take cats home today, should we sleep on it?  I decided to take some pictures of the kittens.
So I went back into the first room, and I saw that the men was still there -- still holding the same adult cat as when my aunt and I were there.
I was like "That cat really looks good with you, I hope you take him home."
And he said: “I have had a lot of cats and I don’t appreciate you mistreating those kittens”
And I was just like BYEEEEE.
I went out to the parking lot and cried.
I told my mom we would come back tomorrow.
I loved Columbia, and I did NOT take the decision to get another pet lightly.  I might not have been a pet owner like my aunt who treats her cats like children, but Columbia never wanted for anything, and babies her while in her old age (as best I could.  In the last months, she refused to take her meds, no matter how sneaky I thought I was giving them to her), and she was very, very, very loved.
I would never do anything to harm an animal.  Like, my sister and I have barely talked since the 2016 election, and I talked to her because I thought her cat had a thyroid problem and was going to starve if they didn’t put it on meds.
And I had finally felt better after Comic Con and the hospitalization and I figured this was a good time to bring new family members home.
So, tomorrow, we’re gonna try again.
My Dad and my niece are gonna go with me.  We might come home with kittens -- or I might adopt cats that are like a year old.
The problem is I want TWO, because I work and I don’t want them to be alone! I think that would be the worst thing for the cat.  I always felt bad we never got another companion for Columbia after our dog died - but by then she was like 10 and probably would have eaten another cat.
But ideally,
We’re gonna get 2 cats
We’re gonna set up the sunroom as the cat safe room for when I’m at work
We’re gonna be awesome cause that asshole man has no idea what he’s talking about and those cats are gonna be aggressively loved and pampered for another decade or more.
And I need to name them if they are kittens.
I am still thinking Max and Salem, but like -- am I being too basic and need a cooler fandom name?  Columbia was named after the Rocky Horror Picture Show character cause that’s my 12 year old self was super into.
Emotional vomit over.
And, PS
I’m glad tumblr exists for this.  I posted that I thought I might get cats on Facebook and suddenly everyone was coming out of the woods to tell me I was wrong or I had to do it a certain way.  It’s cause I said I didn’t want dogs because I thought cats were easier -- which was my polite way I saying: I hate the outsides, and I dislike dogs in person, I think they are smelly and way too hyper and I am just not a dog person.  Sorry.  I want cats.  don’t need a lecture on how cat’s are HARD.  I know.  I lived with the crankiest cat ever for almost two decades.

Welcome to the World of Bitty Readers!
What is a Reader?
A “Reader” is a magical being known for its small size and ability to ‘read,’ or decipher the emotions of a Monster companion.
Where do Readers come from?
Readers are ‘born’ when a mixture of Human and Monster magic combine with emotional magic, creating a SOUL which then draws energy from the world around them to create a solid form. Because Human magic must be present, Readers have only been found on Mt. Ebott, where the magic the Barrier stood for the last 1,000 years has irradiated the land. The breaking of the Barrier flooded the mountain with Monster magic, which had been contained.
The first Reader was not discovered until exactly one year after the Alpha Clan broke the Barrier. On that day, the Swap Clan broke through their own Barrier. Despite existing in a separate universe (which will be covered further down), there was still enough residual Monster magic to flood the Alpha Mt. Ebott and create the first Reader. Over the following months more Readers were discovered, and laws were established to protect them.
Scientists are still unsure of the exact amount of the different types of magic to create a Reader. They tend to appear in places where Monster magic is used frequently, such as the Royal Guard Training Grounds near the Royal Palace. A special unit of the Royal Guard was even created with the sole purpose of finding and rescuing Readers.
What do Readers look like?
Readers vary in appearance, just like Monsters and Humans. They can be short (as small as 2.5”) or tall (the biggest on record was 10” in height!), and while many look human, others have animal or mythological aspects to their appearance.
Do Readers have SOULs?
Readers do, indeed, have SOULs, though they are very different from both Human and Monster SOULs. Since Reader’s are composed of magic from both species, their SOULs vary in size and shape. The amount of each magic determines the shape of the Reader’s SOUL. If a Reader has mostly Human magic, their SOUL will be mostly right-side up and show plenty of color. If a Reader’s SOUL is mostly Monster magic, their SOUL will be mostly upside-down and be almost all white. If a Reader is close to having half of each type of magic, their SOUL will be half upside-down and half right-side up, and will have both color and colorless sections.
Tumblr media
This type of divide can create very odd-looking SOULs that can almost appear broken to the untrained eye. There has been more than one report of panicked caretakers bringing their Reader in for help upon seeing their Reader’s SOUL, believing them to be injured. It is important for new caretakers to know that their Reader’s SOUL will be very different from their own.
Do Reader’s SOUL colors have meanings?
Yes! Since a Reader’s SOUL color comes from the Human magic they absorbed upon creation, their SOUL color closely resembles personality traits, the same as Human SOUL colors. Unlike most Human SOULs, however, Readers can have multiple colors in their SOULs at the same time, due to having a larger emotional capacity.
The colors and their corresponding emotion or personality trait are listed below.
Red - Determination
Orange - Bravery
Yellow - Justice
Green - Kindness
Blue - Integrity
Indigo - Curiosity
Violet - Perseverance
Aqua - Patience
Pink - Love/Affection
Brown - Adventurous/Foolish
Black - Hatred/Violence
Gray - Remorse/Sorrow
White - Balanced/Hidden Soul
Gold - Generous/Caring
Silver - Courageous
The tint or hue of the color in their SOUL, as well as on their sweater, relates to how strong that trait is in the Reader. For example, a Reader with a very light green or pale green sweater would be kind, but also very timid. In contrast a Reader with a dark green or forest green sweater would be one to go out of their way to help another, no matter who (or what) they are.
Like any Human or Monster, a Reader’s SOUL color can change over time, depending on health and well being, time of year, and/or situations and events they face. Any Reader with a SOUL that appears to be ‘flickering’ or rapidly shifting in color should be taken to a doctor immediately; it is a sign of ‘Falling Down,’ especially in older Readers.
Why do Readers in the shelter wear color-coded sweaters?
The sweaters Readers wear when in the shelter are given to them when they first arrive. The sweaters are made and donated by Monsters all over Mt. Ebott and are imbued with a special spell which ‘reads’ the Reader’s SOUL when they are first worn. The Reader’s SOUL dyes the sweater over the course of an hour or so, and the sweater will remain that color for the rest of its existence. The sweaters are used to identify the stand-out traits in each Reader in order to pair them with the appropriate Monster caretaker.
Why do Readers need a Monster Caretaker?
Readers and Monsters have a symbiotic relationship. Monsters provide emotional stability that Readers require in order to keep their SOULs balanced. Because their SOULs are a mix of Human and Monster magic, Readers grow physically unstable over time. Without a stable source of magic to feed their SOUL, a Reader with a heavily split SOUL (more than 30%/70% of either Monster/Human or Human/Monster, in general) will die within a few weeks of being created because their SOUL cannot handle being that differentiated on it’s own. Thanks to the genius of the Royal Scientists, The Hart Shelter is equipped with Magical diffusers that are used to help Readers stay in good health until they are adopted.
Readers and Monsters alike benefit from being together on an emotional level as well. When paired well, Readers and Monsters can easily forge a bond that is familial in nature, and often times a Reader will live as long as their Monster does. With their ability to read the emotions of a Monster they have bonded with, even emotions not being openly displayed, Readers can provide stability and serve as a type of therapy companion to Monsters afflicted with depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other mental disorders.
Aren’t Readers just pets?
NO.
Readers are sapient, and are protected by the same laws as the Monsters on Mt. Ebott. They have the acceptance of the royalty of all the Clans currently living on the mountain and there are laws in place to protect them. Harming Readers, denying them their rights, or otherwise causing them distress is punishable under the law and carries hefty fines and jail time.
If you have any questions about the laws specifically, consult your Clans charter.
What kind of Reader is best for me?
This pamphlet isn’t a mind reader! If you’d like to adopt a Reader or volunteer at the shelter, please come visit Miss Hart’s Shelter on South Street, two doors down from Alpha Grillby’s Bar and Grill. We look forward to meeting you!
Sincerely,

Red Lipstick and The Green New Deal
Tumblr media
Have you ever been told as a child, if something isn’t working then find a new solution? At this moment, our country is like that child, and it needs to be told to find a new solution. The way the United States of America has been operating works, but not for everyone, and our climate is changing. Not just our environmental climate, but the political climate as well. Our country is depleting, poverty is soaring, healthcare is unaffordable, student loan debt is atrocious, and climate change is quite literally killing people. Young people feel our country is stuck. The older generation is holding onto it like their youngest child leaving for college. Ultimately, no matter what, that child will leave. Everyone has to grow up, even this country, and it’s going to happen whether the parents like it or not. Every movement, and this is a movement, to push our country forward needs a voice. For us, that is Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or AOC is a 31-year-old Latina-American born and raised in the Bronx of New York City. Her parents ended up moving 30-50 miles north of the Bronx to a better neighborhood to afford better education and a future for their children. In a 2019 TIME Magazine article, AOC said that those 40-minute drives taught her that zip-code matters. What a lesson to learn, that where you grow up has more impact on your future than you do. Her mother cleaned houses, and her father owned a small architecture business. In 2008 her father died which spun the family into financial turmoil. This caused AOC to pick up multiple jobs, working for a nonprofit by day, and bartending by night. She has constantly said that she never saw herself going into politics, but it’s hard to deny that she was built for the political stage. Her brother submitted her for Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats who are actively looking for young people to run for Congress. They want people who are working class, poor, educated to be the Americans who represent other Americans. I believe it was on her way to a protest at the Dakota Access Pipeline when she received a call asking if she wanted to run for Congress. From there on began the development of a grassroots campaign, that is the ultimate underdog story.
She was running against Joseph Crowley, an incumbent who hadn’t been challenged since 2004. He was your average democrat, swearing loyalty to fight Donald Trump, and that was a majority of his campaign. What he didn’t pay attention to was AOC, who ran on true issues and the need to help the residents of the 14th district in New York. Her campaign was made up of volunteers, a majority of whom were actors, and they knew how to put on a good show. They didn’t accept any lobbyist money, and were completely donation based. That was quite fascinating that she was able to beat someone who had millions of dollars being poured into his campaign fund. However, her winning wasn’t about the money, it was about this newfound energy and spirit that she has that led her to victory. She really cares about people, she cares about what policies are being put forward in order to help those people in the future.
Tumblr media
She continues to radiate this fiery passion to fight, even into her 3rd year in Congress. This passion and honesty are what make her so radical, likable, and attention-grabbing. Allowing her presence on social media to skyrocket over the years. We can see this in news clips that have gone viral of her during committee hearings where she pours her heart out. In one of her most famous clips where she exclaims, “People are dying” while using her passionate words to defend the Green New Deal. In this specific video, she is speaking the absolute truth. The climate crisis is about human lives, and there should be no debate around that whatsoever. It’s come to the point in politics where people need to speak up and fast because the climate crisis has a ticking time bomb, and if we do not tackle this issue before it’s too late there is no turning back. AOC is the person speaking up, she doesn’t sugar coat anything, and she does it with grace. Even if people don’t like her, whether that’s the haters and trolls online or her coworkers across the aisle, continues to not let others silence her.
youtube
I remember when a Republican congressman called her a “fucking bitch” she spoke up. Whereas others, I feel, would keep quiet, I’m sure Nancy Pelosi has been called that by some of her coworkers, but the world has never heard it. Alexandria took the time to approach the situation like the female hero everyone knows she is. There is no politician filter when she speaks, it’s raw, and it’s fully and truly her. She is not afraid to use social media to call out people on their stupidity, wrongness, or even disagreement with others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some will say that she just became a congressperson at the right time, during the social media boom. While that may hold some truth, it’s really how she uses social media to create a space of transparency that has caused the public to flock to her accounts like a moth to light. At the time the TIME article was written they said, “her Twitter following has climbed from about 49,000 last summer to more than 3.5 million.” Her Twitter following is now at 12.6 million. I believe, just from my own research, she has the most Instagram followers of her other coworkers at 8.8 million followers. When I look at her Instagram feed compared to Bernie Sanders, Nancy Pelosi, Ted Cruz, and other big political names, her feed is very different. Others have a lot of information pictures, news clips, and statistical slides that may grab some people's attention, but it’s very political because there is no connection. When you look at AOC’s feed a majority are videos of her doing live Q&A sessions. I haven’t seen this on any other politician's platform. She is directly and in real time, answering questions about current legislation in which she is able to clear up misinformation. I watched her live Q&A about what was in the second COVID relief bill, and I learned so much. She has created this space of truth, transparency, and faith all because she chose to include people in what she is doing for them. Just a few days ago she posted a short weekly vlog where she explained what she did during that week. You don’t see others in her same position doing that. Many may think it’s irresponsible, not politician-like, but in actuality it’s what they should be doing.
Now, is this a generational thing or something else? She’s 31 years old, grew up during the social media boom, tends to have younger interns, is more in tune with the “lingo” as the older people may say. While it may be all of the above, she has actively chosen to use her social media like this. Others can use their accounts like this but choose not to for some reason. AOC is one of the only people actively getting the younger generation involved in politics, and she does this through the internet. During the pandemic, she live-streamed her playing the vastly popular game, Among Us, where she talked about legislations and let people ask her questions. She has made countless statements that the older generation in Congress always talks about young people, but never makes space for us, allowing us to show our potential. It’s always, “it’s not your time yet” never “come show us what you can do now.” AOC is leading the path for young people to have a space in the political circle. There is also one more major reason why people like her so much, and that’s because she is a working-class American.
Tumblr media
I have said my entire life that I would love to see Republicans switch shoes with a steelworker for one day. The majority of people who run our government have grown up in a life of privilege that afforded to get them there. They don’t know what real working class, poor Americans go through every day. Our government has a real problem that if they can’t see it, it doesn’t exist. AOC has lived check to check, been on the other end of taking someone’s order, worked overnight just to have some extra cash to pay off student loans. I’m not disavowing anyone's upbringing, but she has consistently put forward a policy that helps the average American. Even policy that helps everyone, like The Green New Deal.
The Green New Deal is a Resolution put forth by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts. It is not a piece of legislation, but a call to action that the federal government takes steps to cut its emissions of greenhouse gases to zero by 2030. The 14-page resolution has a ton of what seems like radical changes. This includes updating the country’s infrastructure, energy grid, and ensuring livable wages for all American jobs. There is a lot to discuss when it comes to the Green New Deal, as within those 14 pages the goals outline almost everything that makes up the US economy. There are so many benefits that could happen to our country if something like this is passed. For instance, guaranteeing higher education for everyone in order to receive the knowledge needed to acquire a job with a livable wage. The Green New Deal also addresses issues such as systemic racism and puts forth proposals to invest in certain neighborhoods. These are the types of legislation that need to be put forward in order for our country to evolve. The fact that not everyone is guaranteed higher education, shelter, clean water, healthy food, is unacceptable.
Tumblr media
Most of the rebuttal to the Green New Deal is that it’s too expensive, unrealistic, and the federal government shouldn’t have that much power. While the GND is expensive, estimated to be around 50-90 trillion dollars, the federal government will end up spending more money in the long run from disasters related to climate change. The Green New Deal says the federal government could spend up to 500 trillion dollars in economic relief by 2100. The more we wait, the more money we will have to spend in the long run catching up to those problems, until we cannot. To those who say the Green New Deal is unrealistic, I ask them to read a history book and identify all the major life-changing events that others have said were unrealistic as well. Americans freeing themselves from Britain, the abolishment of slavery, the civil rights act, The New Deal. For my response towards the issue of government power, if the federal government isn't the ones putting forth legislation to protect American lives I don’t know what they are there for.
With all that being said, is AOC the right person to bring forth this Green New Deal? To that, I say absolutely yes. She represents the new millennium, the rise of the younger progressive generation who is fighting to make real change in this country. Her use of social media, and how she connects to people across the world set an example as to who we want our elected leaders to be. Transparent, honest, and inclusive in their media. Her story, who she is as a person, what she stands for is what the Green New Deal stands for. Rightfully so when someone mentions her they think of the Green New Deal, and vice versa. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is what the future of this country will look like, and she will continue to lead the pack.
