So, if Hollyleaf hadn't tried to enforce her will onto the ancestors of the tribe and clans, could they have saved the ancient lake? Or was it already lost like White heart woods? Could Hollyleaf had done anything to save the ancient Lake territory?

I don't think it serves the story at all for it to have always been a lost cause. They needed to have a chance because the whole point of the story is how Hollyleaf distracting them with bloody, pointless infighting caused them to lose everything.

It was over a hundred years ago-- before vehicles and heavy machinery, and there were a LOT of cats. If they couldn't stop all of it, they could have slowed it! Or caused enough of a risk that it wasn't worth it, or even stopped the quarry while losing some of the woodland.

They even have gods on their sides. They could have done SOMETHING.

If Holly Leaves had listened to them, understood THEIR needs and done what they truly wanted, I think she would have been a fantastic General. She could have shown them battle tactics, and come with future knowledge of how humans tend to retaliate with their traps and their poisons.

But, sadly, Hollyleaf's Century is a tragedy. It is doomed from the start because Fallenleaf was a person with a fatal flaw. Every time, without fail, Orpheous turns around in the end, and watches Eurydice fall back down.

Rivalshipping as trying to hard to see each-other as their own people, but it’s hard to even see themselves as their own people. Falling in love with Orpheous and wishing he could play that old song for you.
