Upon reflecting this past year, I’m reminded of one area as a fandom citizen that i am lacking - reading fic. And so was born an idea to canvas my fandom family and friends to share with me a fic they've written, art they've created, a podfic they've recorded in 2023 of which they are most proud.

This two part 'rec yourself' list is the result.

Part One features Drarry creations (heavily featured since that's my OTP). Part Two (here) includes a kick-ass mix of various HP ships and ships from other fandoms, including Carry On, Check Please!, Good Omens, Teen Wolf, and Stranger Things. Also, and most importantly, each entry presents a smol blurb from the creator about why they chose their particular piece as their 2023 favorite.

For ease in reading, I've also placed all submitted works posted to AO3 into a filterable bookmark collection, Rec Yourself 2023. Be aware that there's a range of ratings and archive/creator tags, so please, take appropriate responsibility for your personal consumption. And please also be sure to shower the creators with kudos and lovely comments.

✩ @pato-roldnart ✩ Quiet as a mouse HP | Viktor Krum x Ron Weasely | ART | G rating | Unleashed!Fest 2023 I'm quite proud of this one, I don't know how I made it, I had never drawn them before! My mind went full "oh yeah ronvik " Also, I like the idea of them bonding over their pets and Ron seeing that Viktor cares about something else that is not Quidditch.

✩ @tontonguetonks ✩ Coffee and a Croissant HP Next Gen | Scorpius x Albus | 903 FIC | G rating There are parts of myself and my lived experience in every story and character I write—how I socialize, how I take my coffee… I can’t help it. In *Coffee and a Croissant*, I put a lot of myself in my ace and autistic Albus. He is very dear to me in this story, and in my Fizzy Lifting Drinks drabble. The fic is just a toe-dip in the Soulmate waters where Albus grapples with what to do if he is someone’s Soulmate, but they’re not his. Parts 2 and 3 are in the works, but there is no timeline on either of them. Maybe in 2024?

✩ @crazybutgood ✩ I Bloom Pink For You HP | Narcissa Malfoy x Pansy Parkinson | 993 FIC + ORIGAMI COMIC | M rating | HP Bodice Ripper Fest 2023 This whole idea came about because I got so excited to fold a corset for hp bodice ripper fest, realised I couldn't just submit that one thing, and started brainstorming more loose ideas. It all clicked together when I was inspired by a fic by @schmem14, whose writing I adore. I was so grateful and even more excited when Em gave permission to make this. From there started the self-indulgent process of folding fancy things with fancier papers for this origami comic, and I couldn't have done it without Em and my lovely support team.

✩ @seekercass ✩ Something Cosmic HP | Cedric x Draco x Harry | 1.7k FIC | M rating | Polyship Week 2022 A self-rec that I am still extremely proud of is a short fic written for Polyshipping Week 2022 called Something Cosmic. It's a small coda to Something Good to Always Keep, another fic that I wrote for Quidditch Fest 2021 that I cherish very much. Even though writing is still hard for me these days, I often think about this 'verse and what life is like for Harry, Draco and Cedric after they graduated from Oxford. These three and slice of life bring me such joy. I hope to write more of them.

✩ @roseharpermaxwell ✩ Sounds Worth It HP | Hermione x Draco | 5k FIC | T rating | D/Hr Advent 2023 Being nominated for d/hr advent was a sweet surprise. It gave me a good excuse to remember how to write and the nudge I needed to create something this year.

✩ @basicallyahedgehog ✩ (They) Keep Me Warm HP | Hermione x Harry x Ron | 5.8k FIC | E rating | HP Trans Fest 2023 This was my transfest fic - I wrote it as a love letter to all my trans and Enby friends and as a way of processing some of my own feelings. It’s my first (and so far only) foray into poly golden trio and I loved playing with their dynamics with that added layer to their relationship.

✩ @lumosatnight ✩ For I Have Found Salvation HP | Harry x Severus | 7.1k FIC | E rating | Snarry AUctoberfest 2023 Although this is a smut fic at its core, I tried really hard to make the pacing flow, bringing in background characters, and creating memorable imagery. I am very proud of how it turned out. However, this is probably my favorite fic from 2023 simply for the fact that I had the most fun writing it!

✩ @sugareey-makes-stuff ✩ Feel You Breathing Teen Wolf | Derek Hale x Stiles Stilinski | 8.4k TEXTING FIC | E rating | 2023 Year of the OTP This is my fav 2023 piece because I learned how to create a custom text message AO3 skin, stylize things for plain text reading, and I wrote a whole story that had some plot that was told through text messages. Also, I did not know I could achieve so much spiciness and throw in so many bad pick-up lines through this medium, but hey, the more you know! XD

✩ @schmem14 ✩ Mastermind HP | Harry x Ron; Draco x Harry; Ron x Draco | 10.7k FIC | E rating | Dronarry Fest 2023 This is one of the few times a story just flew out of me. Possessive stalker Draco sets out to win over Ron in this creepy thriller, but there’s a catch: Ron is already in love with Draco’s boyfriend, Harry.

✩ @drwhoisginnyholmes & @fledglinger ✩ Not Bad, For A 6000 Year Old Classic! Good Omens | Aziraphale x Crowley | 11.8k FIC + ART | E rating | DIWS Reverse! Reverse! Mini Bang

✩ @sniperjade ✩ The Sounds of Us HP Marauders | Regulus x Remus | 20.4k FIC | M rating | Remus Lupin Fest 2023; HPFC Spring Fling 2023 I've been thinking about this for a couple of days and whilst I would really love to say it was the drarry I wrote for this fest last year my favourite would have to be this moonseeker I wrote for Remus Lupin Fest last year. It's my favourite because I lived this fic. It became the entirety of my personality for a whole month because I desperately needed to get to the chapter where Regulus was riding on Padfoots back, through the forbidden forest, with only the light of the full moon to guide them, just to try and help Remus. It's also just because it's very musical and I'm very musical so that makes me love it all the more.

✩ @ghaniblue ✩ Sleeping With Ghosts HP | Regulus x Draco x Harry | 21.9k FIC | M rating | Harry Potter Rare Pair Fest IV I posted a Regulus/Harry/Draco fic last month that I'm very fond of. I started writing it more than 1 1/2 years ago, before I ever read a single Regulus fic. It's triad fic, and I'm pretty proud of the way the individual relationships develop. That was important to me, and I think I succeeded. Posting the first fic on ao3 with this triad tag doesn't hurt either.

✩ @celilasart & @wolfspurr ✩ Shifted Teen Wolf | Derek Hale x Stiles Stilinski | 25k FIC + ART | T rating | Sterek Reverse Bang This work was created for sterek reverse bang, a collaboration fest where the artists create first and the writers write second. wolfspurr and I just clicked when we talked about my art and the things that it inspired in their writer brain ;D the result is just an amazingly sweet and wholesome fic, that is still set in the teenwolf universe as we know it. but unlike many other fics which are full of violence and danger, this one starts with a bang and then it is a beautifully woven story of two people who just complete each other. also... the working title for my art was: tiny fox & sour wolf.

✩ @orange-peony ✩ At the speed of light Carry On | Basilton Pitch x Simon Snow | 26.3k FIC | E rating I picked [this fic] because I had a lot of fun writing it! It started off as a drabble and ended up 26k because I just had a blast writing it and the fandom support was so lovely. Last but not least, Pato made an absolutely stunning art piece for this fic, and it was the best present ever.

✩ @wynnyfryd ✩ i don’t know, you figure it out Stranger Things | Steve Harrington x Eddie Munson | 35.4k WIP FIC | E rating bragging about yourself is difficult, but i’ll just say it’s my favorite because i’m proud of myself for sticking to one project for this long, i love all the artwork the fic has inspired, and i just think the line “the river styx must taste like pennies” fucks severely lmao.

✩ @decaflondonfog ✩ growing pains Check Please! | Eric Bittle x Kent Parson | 50k FIC | T rating i am not usually a long fic gal, which i think is in part lack of patience, but also how attached i get to a universe if i’m working on it for a longer period of time. i finished writing this back in june but this fic felt very “me” in many ways and i think about them so often still so it’s definitely my 2023 creation i’m proudest of!

10. Describe their first date.

OHHH I think I've mentioned this in some other ask game too but hehehe they technically have two, though the first one is technically a "oh we're just friends who want to get to know each other better" hehehe <3 Putting the actual first date & other questions under the cut so it won't get too long :^)

Okay so, basically, they got to know each other through their friend group. Klara was one of the first members of the group & Toby joined later bc Leon met him on programming class and decided to invite him to one of the events. A week or two after Toby appears, Klara and he meet in the same cafe in the morning and decide to spend the whole day there just talking abt stuff and getting to know each other. It gets a bit too crowded in the cafe at some point so they go to Klara's apartment, to continue studying and talking and all. Toby ends up falling asleep on a sofa 👍 They both call it a study date or just seeing a friend or smth, but their feelings are definitely something else.

Now the actual first date? Funny thing, it's the same cafe. During evenings it also sells some kind of dinner food and non-alcoholic drinks, so they decide to go there in the evening hehe. They also spent most of the time talking, about different topics this time, just enjoying being near each other and being happy <3

They're both not into pda so they leave after some time and go for a walk, somehow get to the beach, sit down in the sand and just watch the stars together while holding hands. After a while they continue their walk & go to Klara's apartment and basically fall asleep on the couch almost right after getting there sjbsbfbfkfkf

22. What reminds each of their partner?

oughhh obviously not a full list, trying to keep these answers somewhat short skfkkfgkgk

What reminds Toby of Klara: birds, bright red and orange things, pies, sunsets, sound of waves, coffee, strawberries, bass guitars

What reminds Klara of Toby: sweaters, green tea, cats, chemistry, croissants, chocolate, sunsets, music

42. What's their favorite type of weather to enjoy together? (getting snowed in together, watching thunderstorms, etc.)

Rain!!!! They enjoy it in different ways too! Sometimes they just sit cozily home and listen to the rain while watching serials or reading together, sometimes they go for a walk outside together, they both kinda like it when it rains hehe <3

49. Does either of them have a hard time being away from the other?

They both do!! They're so close to each other, maybe even too close, that they just kinda, well, don't want to be away for a long time and just find it hard to not have the other near them :')

I do think Toby has it harder sometimes bc being left alone w his thoughts after some things happen (especially his ex-job) is v bad for him and he just kinda can't just be alone abdjjffkg 😭 He has a really bad time at the beginning of in game canon ngl :(

Long Distance Love - Part 4: An Unusual Date

Author's note: I know this took me forever to finish but, I did! This is my last submission to @choicesnovchallenge2021 and from the OTP ask I received a while ago. One last thing: if you’re a Twilight fan, you might not going to like this fic. Sorry not sorry [Original characters are creations of this author. The others are owned by Pixelberry Studios] Book: Desire & Decorum (modern day AU) Characters: Prince Hamid, MC (Daphne), F!OC (Malak), F!OC (Sevim) Pairing: Prince Hamid x MC (Daphne) Rating: T Word count: 2115 Reading time: ~8min Summary: Away from each other, Hamid and Daphne search for ways to have fun together and Daphne comes up with an idea to lighten up the mood. The phone buzzed on the side table, waking Hamid from his peaceful slumber. As his left hand rubbed his eyes, he considered ignoring it and going back to sleep. Just then, his alarm clock song played and he remembered why he had to wake up early on a Saturday morning. He then turned off the alarm, got out of bed and left the master bedroom.

As he stepped into the living room, Hamid greeted his housekeeper, thanking her for setting up breakfast on the coffee table. He then tapped his phone screen a couple times and made a video call.

"Günaydın, bir tanem!¹" Daphne beamed and waved to the the screen.

"Good evening, my dove." He smiled at the screen, his eyes drinking in every possible detail he could see. "I see your new winter pyjamas arrived today."

"Yes! It's so warm and soft. And look at this!" She pulled the hood of her Totoro pyjamas by its long furry ears.

He chuckled. "You look adorable."

"Thank you. Did you sleep well?"

"I did. I was having the nicest dream about cuddling my girlfriend when the alarm woke me up."

"You thought about going back to sleep, didn't you?"

"Yes, but then I remembered I had a date."

“Aw… I miss you."

"I miss you too, aşkım²."

"So... What would we have for breakfast if I was there with you?"

He switched to the rear camera and showed her to the table. "This would be our breakfast," he said as he grabbed a croissant.

"Wow, Mrs. Meral outdone herself! My mouth is watering.” She moved closer to the screen. “But I think she missed your chai."

"I'm not drinking chai this morning," he answered before switching cameras again and lifting a cup of cappuccino to his lips.

"Why not? You love chai in the morning."

"I do... But cappuccino reminds me of how kissing you tastes like when we have breakfast together."

Her eyes welled up and she looked away.

"Aşkım."

"Yes?"

"Did you forget what we agreed for this date?"

"No crying because both of us would be sad. But I didn't expect you to say that..." She replied, brushing away a tear.

"You're right. I'm sorry."

"Don't be. That was really sweet."

"I'm glad you think so. Now you tell me what we would have for dinner if I was there with you."

She lifted a large hamburger stuffed with lamb meatballs and his favorite beer and smiled coyly. "I was coming back from uni, passed by that one restaurant you like and I pictured you so stoked about having a Turkish dish for dinner, arriving here with a brown bag full of köfte burgers... I miss that..."

"Me too..." He smiled wistfully.

"I'm ruining our date again..."

The two of them chuckled.

"Let's change the subject then. Have you thought about the movie we will watch? It's your turn."

"I did. But I was thinking we could try something different this time. How about we roast/watch a movie we both hate?"

"A movie we both hate?" He raised an eyebrow. "I'm intrigued... What's your pick?"

"Open quickflix on your laptop. I'm sending you the invitation now."

As he turned on his laptop and opened the streaming service app, a notification popped on the screen. When he accepted the invitation, a chat room opened and a poster of Twilight showed up.

"What do you think?"

"I think you're trying to get me in trouble."

"Why? Did Malak sleep in the guest room of your flat again?"

"Yes."

"But she won't wake up any time soon. I saw her posting on Pictagram around 3 am. Briar is in the next room with Arthur very much awake and she might hear me."

"They get easily distracted with each other."

"Exactly. That's why we should watch it now."

"I don't know... This is a dangerous idea. Nesrin is coming here and she's much worse than Malak. Not even her husband could convince her to step away from Twitter after a random person said Edward is emotionally constipated."

"This stranger wasn't wrong..."

"I know, but shhhh..."

Daphne giggled. "Come on... You can survive a little yelling."

"All right, but if they get violent, I'm blaming it on you."

"Okay. If something happens, we abort our mission," she answered with a grin and pressed play.

As the movie started, the couple placed their phones in holders to start digging into their meals and went silent for a few minutes. But it didn't take long until they started talking.

"I don't understand why people are so crazy about her. Bella is so boring."

"She's the pretty new girl. People from small towns might find that appealing, don't they?"

"In real life, that would mean becoming the new target for bullies. Especially with that awesome personality of hers."

"You just described every single teenager movie about high school."

"I know, right?" She giggled. "Oh, man! Look at R. Patz hair..."

"A hair higher than the sky with its own supernatural power of resisting the humid weather of Forks."

"Jealous?"

"A little."

The couple snickered and took their time to watch some more and eat.

"Get ready, Hamidciğim. Their meet cute scene is coming."

"Is there a meet cute in Twilight?"

"Yep." Daphne nodded with a devilish smile. "Wait for it."

On the screen, the main character walked into the classroom and a fan spread her smell in the air, making her love interest cover his nose.

"There it is!"

The two of them laughed.

"How romantic..."

"His reaction is so strange though. Isn't the 'you intrigue me, yet you smell delicious and I want to drain all the blood from your body in one single bite' his entire conflict in this movie?"

"Precisely."

"Then how come his reaction is like 'my goodness, girl! Go get a shower'?"

Hamid threw his head back as he laughed out loud.

"Hey, I made a joke, but I kinda want a serious explanation. I only know Jacob's side of things."

"Then you're fortunate you've never witnessed a Jella versus Bedward fight."

"You have?"

"I still have scars to prove it."

Daphne giggled.

"Anyway..." He cleared his throat. "According to Nesrin, Bella's smell is a constant reminder to Edward he's a murderer, that his need for human blood is big part of who he is. So that's why he initially feels repulsed by her presence."

"So his reaction to bloodlust is repulsion?"

"Unfortunately, yes."

"That's disappointing..."

"It's not how other pieces of media portray bloodlust, otherwise it wouldn't be a book and movie saga sold for teenagers."

"That's true. I prefer Dracula from Bram Stoker and the movies based on Anne Rice books. But I had to hide in the attic to watch them because none of them are suitable for minors. And it's not just because of the violence."

"Bella's physical reaction to the bite though..."

The couple chuckled and had some more of their meals. Just then, the main character and her love interest began an argument in the hospital. Daphne grimaced as she stared at the screen.

"Are you okay, aşkım?"

"I'm not sure..." She lifted her beer to her lips, as in an attempt to get rid of a bad taste in her mouth. "Did he really just said 'nobody's going to believe you?'"

"Yes."

"Oh, god..." She shook her head. "How is this relationship seen as romantic?"

"I don't know. I asked the same thing to my sisters and both of them said it's not that bad because 'the line isn't used in a context of sexual abuse'."

"But it doesn't matter! It still is abusive."

"Exactly! Thank you!" He sighed in relief. "I knew I fell in love with you for a reason."

She giggled, but then averted her gaze for a moment.

"Is everything okay?"

"Yeah. I saw a shadow near my door, but it was just Drake."

The dog immediately plopped on her lap and she idly scratched his fur.

"Are you scared of getting caught mocking Edward's hair, aşkım?"

"More like 'not willing to argue once again with my best friend about how Bella Swan has the charisma of a mushroom'."

He chuckled. "You say it because you never watched Fifty Shades of Grey."

"You did?"

"Veronica, Yusuf and a former girlfriend kept talking about it. I wanted to know what the fuss was about."

"And...?"

"The theme is appealing, but the execution was terrible. Besides, the author didn't explore some of the best parts of BDSM."

"Oh, I have soooo many questions about that.”

“Of course you do.” He smirked.

“But let's go back to Twilight because there's something we need to talk about."

As a scene in a green room began, another spat between the main character and her love interest started.

"Did you know that was kind of an attempt to emulate Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's dynamic?"

Hamid choked on his cappuccino for a second. He switched to a glass of water then cleared his throat. "Excuse me?!"

Daphne covered her mouth as she giggled.

"I demand an explanation, Daphne."

"Okay. Observe the dynamic between them for a moment. He's a handsome jerk and she's supposed to be the beautiful main character with the strong personality who constantly defies him. And for some reason, they still feel drawn to each other."

Hamid made a face. "I guess you have a point..."

"But of course, Elizabeth and Darcy's dynamic is poorly executed in Twilight. Edward never changes and reveals himself as a guy who has a heart of gold like Mr. Darcy. He continues to be just a good looking jerk throughout the entire saga. In spite of it, Bella still falls in love with him because the truth is she doesn't need him to change. She's in love with the idea of Edward she made up in her head. And the Edward in her head is perfect."

His forehead creased. "This must be the best definition of Bella and Edward's relationship I've ever heard. It reminds me of Tristan and Isolde opera."

"Does it?" Daphne then narrowed her eyes. "You'd better elaborate that because if you ruin Richard Wagner for me, I'll rat you out to your sisters." She pursed her lips.

"You almost ruined Jane Austen for me and I can't ruin a Wagner opera?" He tsked.

"Elaborate!" She demanded.

"Okay.” He nodded. “Along the series, Bella and Edward follow the same pattern Tristan and Isolde did. They're willing to make the biggest sacrifices and even die for each other, but they don't love each other. Because, like Tristan and Isolde, they don’t know each other that well. And when they do, they don’t seem to understand each other or make any efforts to do so. They love the idea of love, of being in love, but they're not truly in love."

"Oh my goodness, it's so true!" But as realisation hit her, Daphne grimaced. "Oh, god, the Romeo and Juliet reference... Ugh, Hamidciğim! You ruined a Wagner opera and Shakespeare for me!" She whined.

Just then, she leaned to the side and a pillow appeared on the screen.

"Daphne?"

"Are you trash talking about Bella again?!"

Daphne feigned shock at the accusation. "Who? Me?"

"Is that Briar?"

"Yes."

"Abort mission?"

"Is that Hamid?"

"For both of our sakes, yes."

Daphne bit down her lip as she tried to suppress a laugh and another pillow flew next to her.

"Well, that was fun while it lasted..." He joked.

"Oh, it's fine. We can continue later."

"I cannot believe you’re trash talking about Bella with Hamid!" Briar yelled.

"Okay, I think I have to go now."

Daphne giggled and waved to him.

As he ended the call, Malak walked into the room wearing an old T-shirt with the cover of Twilight first movie. "Morning, abi³!"

He looked up and closed the laptop. "Good morning."

"Are you working on a Saturday?" She sat next to him and grabbed a croissant.

"I doubt that. He looks suspiciously happy and we have croissants for breakfast instead of simit and cheese," Sevim chimed in, plopping herself on the sofa.

"I was on a movie date."

"I knew it!" Sevim smiled proudly and grabbed a croissant.

"But it was too fast. You guys usually talk until the battery of both of your phones die." Malak arched an eyebrow.

"Daphne had to leave."

"Aw, that's too bad..." Malak then smiled at the housekeeper, who placed a tray with chai for the girls. "What were you two watching?"

"Romeo and Juliet."

"The 1996 version? Oh, I love that movie! Some of the lines remind me so much of New Moon."

"Don't I know it..." He mumbled.

"What?"

"Nothing. Wanna watch a movie?"

"Sure!"

"Then I'm picking! I've had it with those sappy romances you like." Sevim grabbed the remote control and turned on the TV.

"Hey!" Malak protested. "Why is she so annoying?"

Fighting back a chuckle, Hamid finished his breakfast glad that, despite the distance, he had a fun date with his girlfriend.

AUs I'm a Slut For

Sorry, these are also self-indulgent. Just some of my favorite tropes that really butter my croissant. I'll be using Barson as the example couple because they're currently one of my favorite OTPs rn. I'll add more as I find them, maybe.

Starting off with something I'm especially partial too, the Teachers AU. There's so much potential, especially with Olivia and Rafael as competing teachers.

Genderswap AU. When done well, I think these are pretty cool. Plus, a fem!Rafael would be so hot, I won't take criticism on that.

Vampire/Werewolves are one of my favorite things to write, and I'm just partial to Olivia as a werewolf, no clue why, but I am. Rafael would be a vampire for sure, dude's a total night owl.

Role Reversal! Lawyer Olivia? The best ADA who defends the victims with the same ferocity as a lioness protecting her cubs? Sign me the fuck up.

Alright, like a basic bitch, I love the Coffee Shop AU. I think because I worked in a similar environment, I can really see the potential for romance there ngl.

I'm a sucker for the Roommates AU. These two assholes would get on each others' nerves so much, but boy would they still go to bat for each other. Plus, Olivia is the messy one while Rafael is the clean one, I am Convinced.

My favorite AU since like 8th grade is the Soulmate AU. No matter how it's done, I just love the idea of everyone having someone that's nearly perfect for them. Or, on the opposite side, choosing someone else despite your soulmate. That shit hits different.

Now, the Triad Verse AU is also something I'm partial too. I've been in a poly relationship, they're pretty nice and stable if done correctly. Idk who I could see Liv and Rafael being with maybe Sonny or Alex, but I haven't given it much thought tbh.

The Harry Potter AU is a staple in this fanfiction community. You know it's a big fandom if they have this AU, even if they aren't everyone's favorite. I like them, but they aren't my favorite. Slytherin!Rafael and Hufflepuff!Olivia are the way to go though.

I'm gonna slip this controversial one in the middle. A/B/O AU is something I'm a lil partial too as well. I'm a sucker for that found family/pack shit. SVU is already like a family so it just makes fuckin sense to me. Also Alpha Olivia is lowkey hot ngl.

Alongside number 9, the Grey's Anatomy AU is also very popular. I don't think I've seen one in the SVU archive, but I definitely think it'd be worth writing. Rafael would make a nice Alex Karev, I think.

I don't see this one often, but the Bookstore AU. Rafael owns a bookstore and Olivia is his favorite customer, so he buys books and shit he knows she'll love and displays them v close to the door just for her. I just think he's a teddy bear underneath all the grumpiness and trauma lmao.

Crime AU. Now, this is like essentially the same as a Mafia AU in my unprofessional opinion. I like the thought of Mob Boss! Olivia and her lovely ADA husband.

The whole Flower Shop/Tattoo Parlor AU? That shit will always be one of my top ten AUs. Olivia runs a tattoo parlor and knows absolutely nothing about flowers, so when Rafael tries to confess his Feels through flowers she's completely clueless lmao.

High School/College AU. Now, as someone in high school, I don't wanna read about it. On that note, I still like the dynamics that this AU gives the characters. I just know Olivia is the mysterious brooding bad girl and Rafael is like that loner nerd who never takes his earbuds out. Yes, I'm projecting.

Magic AU. I feel like this would make the SVU job a lot easier to the point that it just fixes everything, but it also adds and interesting subplot so I can usually be convinced to read these. Rafael uses his magic to make the perfect cup of coffee.

The Pen Pal AU is interesting to me, but I rarely see it done in a way I actually enjoy, which is unfortunate. I think this would be cool in a high school AU where students are writing to another classmate, but don't know who, and Rafael gets Olivia.

SVU is already a Single Parent AU, but like, still. It's a cute ass trope that hits all my buttons of found family and gross domesticity lmao.

I love superheroes, and villains, so the Superpowers AU is dope. I think that would be a cool element in so many fandoms. Olivia would have a physical power whereas Rafael would be mental. I have no clue what, it's just a vibe I have.

I adore end of the world style movies, so the Zombie Apocolypse AU is pretty cool imo. Whether it's a crossover or the end of their world, I'm usually interested. I think the characterization of Olivia and Rafael would be cool to see in such a setting ngl.

Coffee shop AU: Who is the barista, and who frequents the coffee shop? May is the barista and Happy and Pepper frequent the coffee shop. There are several other coffee shops that are more convenient to them when they need to go to business meetings, but this is the one with the cute barista. Pepper keeps begging Happy to make a move and Happy Will Not because listen, he didn’t flirt with Pepper for eight months only to have her realize when Tony nearly threw his plate on the ground and screamed, “HE WANTS TO DATE YOU GOD I JUST WANT TO EAT MY CROISSANT GET YOUR FLIRTING OUT OF MY FACE,” to have to flirt with someone else. It’s Pepper’s turn. “But I’m useless when it comes to flirting with women Happy please,” Pepper begs. Happy considers this, then answers, “I hate to break this to you, but you’re useless when you’re flirting with men, too.” “Happy,” Pepper gasps in affront. Anyway one day Tony breaks into the coffee shop (the coffee shop is open, but Happy had had him in a headlock and Pepper had been clinging to legs, the tenacity on this little shit, Jesus Christ) and slams himself down on the counter and hisses, “Are you May? My friends want to date you and they are disrupting our meals by bickering about who should flirt with you. Will you go on a date with them? I just want to eat my salad.” “Wow,” May says, surprised by how freaked out she isn’t. She looks over him to where Pepper and Happy are hovering at the door, looking like they want to bolt out of it and never return. “Yeah, okay,” she finally says, and smiles at them mischievously. “But only if you babysit the nephew I have custody of. He doesn’t like salad.” “I’ll have pizza then I just can’t take another day of indigestion because of them,” Tony informs her, and then squawks when Happy picks him up and carries him out of the shop so he can yell at him.

Highschool/College AU: Who is the straight-A student, and who’s the backrow slacker? Pepper is the straight-A student, Happy is the back row slacker, and May is somewhere in between. Pepper is going to make it in the business world, and so she needs her academic record spotless; she doesn’t go out and party, she spends her free time interning to make connections, and she studies hard. May is her girlfriend and she’s in the art program, but she takes a management minor at Pepper’s suggestion to fall back on, and maybe she doesn’t put as much effort into that as her art classes, but she’s making okay grades. Happy is getting by through the skin of his teeth, and they don’t really understand why until they’re all grouped together for a presentation in their writing course and Pepper recognizes the same exact struggles in him as she had in May when they were in high school. “Happy, do you have any skills to keep you focused?” she asks, because there’s no delicate way of asking ‘have you been screened for a disability?’ Happy stares back at her blankly. “What?” “You’re... struggling a lot like May did in high school,” Pepper begins, trying to be as diplomatic as possible. “I’m dyslexic,” May cuts in bluntly. Happy stares at her instead, but there’s something soft and hurt in his eyes that Pepper recognizes from when she’d carefully taken May’s hands and assured her that she wasn’t stupid and there were coping mechanisms she could learn to help ease the way. So of course they both set about getting him a screening and helping him with tips in the meantime. Happy graduates with a solid B average (unfortunately they got to him a little late to get his GPA higher) and he proudly tells anyone who asks him that Pepper and May were the ones who helped him manage it.

Rivals to loves AU: Who takes their rivalry seriously, and who is half in it just to push the other’s buttons? May and Happy are best friends from childhood--grew up on the same side of town, dealt with the same socioeconomic problems, the works--and are currently living together as May tries to get back on her feet after her husband dies and she’s left custody of his nephew because there are no other remaining Parker relatives (not that she minds, Peter is a sweetheart and she wouldn’t give up this last piece of Ben for the world). They see Pepper at the same time at the local organic grocer. They are immediately embroiled in a battle to see who can ask her out first. May is just in it to push Happy’s buttons at first, but to her dismay, Pepper never seems to realize she’s flirting. “I’d laugh but I told her she was especially pretty today and she laughed at me and said that her best friend compares her to a pretty polar bear all the time,” Happy says, face-down in the couch. “I don’t have the heart to tell her that it’s probably not because she’s beautiful but because she is actually terrifying when she’s mad.” Anyway Peter saves the day in the end because he tugs on Pepper’s skirt and very happily tells her, “Aunt May and Uncle Happy say they want to take you out to dinner,” and Pepper is surprised but happily agrees. Pepper and Happy are mostly just glad that Peter said “take her out to dinner” and did not add “and have her for dessert” like they’d been talking about while he was supposed to be in bed.

Enemies to lovers AU: Which one switches sides? Listen. May didn’t mean to become a villain’s underling. Ben had just died and she needed a better paying job if she wanted to be able to keep Peter, because her salary alone wouldn’t be enough, and the villain was hiring a receptionist and May had proven her New Yorker moxie by immediately telling a prospective alliance for the villain to “go kick rocks, slime isn’t even scary.” The job had dental. You can’t tell her that that wouldn’t give you pause. Anyway Iron Man and Rescue break into the building and take the villain into custody and the only reason May doesn’t get arrested as well is because Happy had been looking through the files and seen that she hadn’t actually engaged in illegal activities, even if she had known he was a villain. “He offered me dental,” May says by way of answer when they gave her incredulous stares. “My nephew might need braces. I needed the coverage.” “Oh, yeah, that would do it,” Happy agrees while Tony and Pepper look absolutely baffled and horrified. Tony looks through the evidence himself (not because he doesn’t believe Happy, but because he’s a paranoid anxious mess) and he realizes that May had actually been an excellent secretary and offers her a job now that hers is... furloughed. “We over medical, dental, and vision,” he tells her demurely. “Sold,” May answers, because she needs new glasses. “I can’t believe you would do this to me, now, on the day of my most hated type of meeting,” Tony says when he walks into Pepper’s apartment to find all three of them in various stages of undress. “I’ll never forget this. I cannot believe.” “I’ll make you unavailable for meetings for a week and a half,” May offers, and wonders if she’ll ever get used to Tony like Pepper and Happy have when Tony just beams at her.

Soulmate AU: Who is eager to meet their soulmate? Who absolutely does not want to meet their soulmate? Pepper and Happy are very eager to meet their soulmates. They find each other early, mostly thanks to Tony hiring people off the street, and when they realize they have a third, they’re very gleeful about it--it’s rare enough that not everyone has a third, but not uncommon enough for people to be shitty about it, so they’re very excited to meet whoever it is. May isn’t as enthused. She’d never really believed in the “one true love” thing, and had had a very happy relationship with Ben, who had lost his soulmate to childhood cancer. Now Ben is gone, and it’s just her and Peter, and she’s okay with that. Then one day she loses Peter in the store and she’s really starting to freak out when someone clears their throat and asks, “Is this yours?” May whips around and nearly sags in relief when she sees a man holding Peter out to her, probably so he couldn’t struggle loose and make another break for it, because he was in his running stage. “Oh,” she says, surprised, when their fingers brush and she sees something on her ring finger, loopy script writing out Virginia Potts quickly followed by blockier letters saying Harold Hogan. “Two,” she breathes, and begins to sink to the ground. The man is staring at his own finger, and he murmurs a breathless, “May, that’s a pretty name,” before he turns and shouts for someone named Pepper. Maybe soulmates weren’t the worst thing in the world, she admits, if only to herself at first.

Single parent AU: Which one is the single parent? (Alt. if they’re both single parents: Which one is open to starting a new relationship from the start? Which one is never planning on finding love again… Until they meet the other and are instantly smitten?) May is the single parent, and Peter is a hellion. She can’t really blame him. She knows he’s had a hard life, losing his parents and then his uncle. She’s not surprised when he starts acting out, but it does make her feel sort of helpless. Still, knowing this, she can’t help but explode, “You TAGGED Stark TOWER?!” “It’s a big ugly building, it’s not like it looks any uglier,” Peter mutters mulishly, as if the head of security for Stark Tower is not standing with his hand on his shoulder and frowning at him very sternly. “That’s mean,” the COO, Virginia Potts, says sternly. “Tony is very proud of his tower. It’s running on completely safe, green sustainable energy and it may not be the most aesthetically pleasing building but it’s taken a big chunk out of Stark Industry’s carbon footprint.” “You care about the environment Peter why would you use spray paint on a completely sustainable building?!” May exclaims. “I didn’t,” Peter gasps, offended that she thought he would. The head of security looks very tired. “It was sidewalk chalk. It was still illegal because he was defacing property.” “I hope you’re ready to do community service because I can’t pay a fine for you Peter,” May grits out. Virginia Potts lifts a hand to pinch the bridge of her nose. “We’re not--we’re not pressing charges. We just wanted you to know what happened.” “You’re not pressing charges?” May asks, disbelieving. The head of security pulls out his phone, opens Twitter, and then turns it so she can see the screen. It’s a daisy, the tweet says, and underneath it is a picture of Tony Stark posing dramatically in front of a white-and-yellow-and-green blob, which is right next to Peter who has drawn several other (better looking) flowers. “I can’t deal with this, you’re grounded forever, go to your room,” May says, covering her face. “Mr. Stark wants me to do the waiting room and he says he’ll pay me,” Peter says as he sidles past her. “...This isn’t abnormal for Tony,” the head of security tells her gently. “I’m having a bottle of wine and going to bed,” May answers, and shuts the door in their faces.

Doctor AU: Which one is the longsuffering doctor? Which one is the patient? Pepper is the long-suffering doctor and Peter is her patient. “You again?” “Listen,” Peter begins. “He attempted to jump off his balcony to get to my balcony because I said I’d made enough spaghetti for all three of us and he didn’t want to take the time leaving his apartment building and getting over to mine,” Happy tells her. Pepper closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, then opens them again. “And you’re in here with Peter instead of May because...?” “Because May is this close to strangling Peter herself and she doesn’t want you to think she’s abusive,” Happy says. “I tried to tell her that a jury wouldn’t convict her but she was shouting curses even I didn’t know so I figured this was easier on all parties involved.” “She’s out in the waiting room if you want to flirt with her too while I’m in for x-rays,” Peter adds, bored, and rolls his eyes when both Pepper and Happy begin sputtering that they weren’t flirting and also shut up you’re an idiot who tried to jump across a balcony.

Bodyguard AU: Who is the bodyguard? Who are they protecting? Which one is secretly pining for the other? Happy is Pepper’s bodyguard, and when she marries May, he becomes her bodyguard too. He is head-over-heels in love with them but it’s not a secret; he is simply too professional and takes his job to seriously to worry about those feelings. “If I invite him up for wine and charcuterie one more time and he turns me down I’m going to cry,” May says into the couch cushions. Pepper flops down across from her on the other couch, sighing in agreement. “Wait, am I the consolation invite?” Tony asks in offense, looking up from pouring himself a glass of wine. “Am I only here because Happy turned you down?” He gasps, affronted. “Why the fuck would Happy come? He doesn’t even like wine. He likes fruity cocktails. He always finishes my mango margaritas.” “You mean we could have invited him up for pina coladas and he would have said yes?!” Pepper sputtered, jerking her face up out of the couch. Tony scowls at her, sets the glass aside, and starts drinking directly from the bottle.

Pirate AU: Who is the pirate? Who is the member of the royal family who did not sign up for this? Pepper is the pirate. Her parents had arranged a marriage for her, she’d taken one look at Aldrich Killian, and she’d promptly fucked off to the ocean. She gets way more respect on the seven seas than she ever did on land so she doesn’t really regret it. May is her first mate, mostly because Peter had shown up begging to be her cabin boy so he could earn money to send home to his widowed aunt who had been taking care of him and right before they were casting off, a woman appeared on the deck and begun hissing and spitting looking for her nephew. And, well, they’d been in terrible debt, so Pepper offers to pay it off for them if Peter works for her for a year. “And let Peter go off and leave me alone? Hardly,” May scoffs, and flounces her way into Pepper’s quarters to find a pair of breeches for herself, because apparently she’s becoming a pirate now too. Happy is the member of the royal family and he did not sign up for this at all. May and Pepper are offended, thinking he’s a misogynist and can’t stand being rescued from a sinking ship by women, but then he points at Peter and says, “Lord Anthony has been looking everywhere for you, he thinks you died, he was going to send you to school.” “He was serious?” Peter asks in surprise. “You cannot throw him overboard,” Pepper says hastily when May begins toward Peter to do just that.

Childhood best friends AU: Which one was super obviously in love with the other the whole time? Who was oblivious until they were older? May has been pretty obviously in love with both of them, but took their obliviousness as disinterest and married Ben. After they send her off on their honeymoon, Pepper and Happy spend the rest of the night getting drunk and bemoaning their missed chances with her. If only they could have been braver and told her that they liked her. Perhaps it’s better this way, though, because she obviously wouldn’t have accepted their feelings. “What did you just say,” Tony hisses, whipping his head up from the table. “May wouldn’t have accepted our feelings,” Pepper repeats for him as Happy nods in agreement. “You don’t--I can’t believe? Fuck you guys oh my God I hate you,” Tony snaps, getting up and storming away from the table. May had been so obvious that even he had known she was in love with them, and it had taken him nine years to realize that his college crush had liked him back.

Ooo~ another ask for Germany!

Y’all know this huge goof would do something like that when he’s so smitten with them. He’d come in every morning, the smell of sugar and bread wafting through the bakery. There are many customers in line buying their breakfast; from jelly rolls, donuts, croissants, and danishes. You’ve even dedicated a case for baked goods and cakes from around the world. He loves watching you chit chat and work in tandem, moving briskly from oven to oven and back to the counter. You laugh with your coworkers and he’s just ~swooning~ at the sound.

However, he has nooo clue that you’ve noticed him and you find him adorable for coming in every morning just to watch you bake. That’s when you make your move one morning; right as he comes in, you greet him and offer him a table by the ovens. Perfect to watch you work your magic. He’d go red completely, unable to refuse, he’d follow you to the table. You’d take his order and he’d stutter out, “Coffee, und whichever you recommend, please.” You’d bring him his order with a dazzling smile and return to the ovens. He eats as s l o w l y as possible because he doesn’t know if this chance will come again.

But what surprises him is when the breakfast rush ends. You hang up your apron, grab a pot of coffee and an extra cup. You walk around the counter and take a seat in front of him.

You introduce yourself with a grin and fill his cup. “I knew if I didn’t grab you soon, you wouldn’t stay after.” Germany can’t believe his luck. What a lovely morning~

Hmm, I’d have to say the America x Russia is kinda my otp :D But for real, I ship nearly everything in Hetalia~

As a child, Rafael Barba loved the Christmas season. He loved getting to open a present on Noche Buena and feasting on lechon asado (which took all day to make), ropa vieja, moros y cristianos, maduros and arroz con leche. He loved hearing his grandmother tell stories about Cuba and if he was particularly good, she would let him have a sip of the heavily spiked crema de vie.

Rafael had been having a hard time getting into the festive spirit after his grandmother passed away, especially since he felt as if it were his fault.

This was the first Christmas he wasn’t single, however. The DA’s office had a mixer and that was how the two of you met. He worked with SVU; you worked in white collar crime. The two of you bonded over a discussion of Macallan rum while being miserable at the much forced work/social event.

While Rafael was grateful to have met you, his heart was hurting. He had longed for his abuelita to meet you. After she had passed, his mother gave him the engagement ring his grandmother wanted him to give to you. He carried the ring with him for weeks; though he still intended to ask for your hand, the ring felt like a stone dragging him down. Subconsciously, as a result, he distanced himself from you.

That morning, he woke up after another night of restless sleep. The clock read 4am and it was still pitch black outside. Carefully, so as to not to disturb your sleeping form, Rafael crawled out of bed and got ready for work.

You woke up startled. Seeing the empty spot next to you, you looked at the clock - 5:30 AM. You sighed, before collapsing back into bed, pulling the comforter over your head.

Two and a half hours later, you padded around the kitchen, ready to grab your purse when you noticed yesterday’s dinner untouched and uneaten on the counter. With a sigh, you tossed the plate of salmon and buttery potatoes (that had congealed) into the trash.

You knew grief was full of ups and downs - fits and starts. It was anything but a linear path. You could tell when Rafael was having a good day - he was jovial and confident. Other days, he appeared weary, as if the weight of the world was his burden. You tried to give Rafael as much space as he needed to process. As much as you were tempted to, you didn’t want to fall prey to the temptation of filling the silence with platitudes.

You headed out of the apartment and made way to get breakfast at the local coffee shop. If you knew Rafael well - which you did - you knew he hasn’t had breakfast. The DA’s office wasn’t far, so you carried a tray over - a large black for Rafael, a soy latte for Carmen and a flat white for yourself. In your other hand was Rafael’s favorite: a guava and cheese croissant, a rift on his favorite pastry growing up.

You walked down the hallway towards his office. The DA’s office was surprisingly quiet, but you knew that would soon change. You rapped softly, before entering.

“Carmen, I said no interruptions,” Rafael barked before looking up. His gaze subtly softened. “Cariño.”

“You were gone early. Didn’t get to say goodbye. I brought you something to eat,” you replied softly.

“Thanks but I’m not hungry,” Rafael grumbled before going back to his notes. “I’ll take the coffee though.”

You sat down in the chair in front of his desk and pushed the coffee and bakery bag in front of him.

“You aren’t taking care of yourself amor. You came home late last night, you haven’t shaved,” you continued eyeing the more than a 5 o’ clock shadow Rafael sported “and you didn’t eat because the leftovers in the fridge —“

“I said I wasn’t hungry! Drop it,” Rafael snapped, cutting you off. He looked up and saw the expression on your face. You gave him a small tight lipped smile and nodded.

“I’ll see you at home,” you replied, standing. At the doorway you paused to look behind you and saw that Rafael had resumed his writing. You nodded once more and shut the door behind you with a click.

Rafael looked back up as the door shut with a click. He sighed and tossed his pen onto the desk, his head falling into his hands.

Back at home, you blasted the local radio station that started playing Christmas music early. You bopped along Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.

You had the Christmas decorations brought up from storage and you had just finished hanging the stockings from the mantle, when a sharp knock interrupted you.

You hit pause on the stereo and then looked through the peephole. You smiled at the visitor and opened the door. “Mrs. Barba! What are you doing here?”

Lucia gave you a look. “Please, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Lucia.” She reached down to pick up a box. “Is Rafi here?”

“No - at the office,” you replied.

“Como siempre,” Lucia replied with a sigh, opening the box. “I was cleaning out my mother’s apartment and I found some of her old Christmas ornaments that she smuggled out of Cuba. These have been in our family for generations. I thought Rafi would love them.”

You gently picked up an frosted glass ball covered in lace. “These are gorgeous; thank you.”

Lucia gave you a warm smile. “You’ve done a lovely job decorating — why are there three stockings though on the mantle?”

You gave her a coy smile. “I haven’t even told Rafael yet,” you confessed. You placed a hand on your stomach.

“Ay dios mio!” Lucia exclaimed, enveloping you into a hug. “This is so exciting! When are you due? How do you feel? ¡Mija, siéntate!”

You let out a small giggle. “I’m only 6 weeks. I’m due August 19th. I feel good; some nausea. Nothing too bad.”

“Oh Rafi is going to be so happy!” Lucia exclaimed.

“I hope so,” you replied. When Lucia cocked her brow, you continued. “He’s been having a hard time since your mother passed.”

Lucia nodded, and walked over to the mantle, gingerly touching the stocking that had Baby Barba embroidered on it. “They were incredibly close. I know he feels guilty about the nursing home.”

You nodded, wrapping your arms around yourself. Lucia walked up to you and enveloped you into another hug.

Rafael wearily shuffled into the apartment. He took off his coat and hung it up, before removing his suit jacket. “Cariño?”

You pressed the button on the remote and the entire apartment lit up in sparkly lights. The apartment was decorated to the nines in Christmas decor.

Rafael was stunned. ‘When did she do all of this?’ he wondered.

“Surprise,” you replied softly, from across the room, by the mantle. “I know you have been having a hard time. And I know nothing I saw will bring her back, and nothing will change that void in your heart, but I just want to bring some joy back into your life.”

Rafael walked up to you. Wordlessly, he pulled you close to him. Your hands on his chest, you breathed in the scent of his cologne. Rafael tipped your head back slightly with his finger and brought his lips down to yours. You moaned into the kiss as his tongue tangled yours. The stubble of Rafael’s unshaved beard irritated your skin.

You hesitantly broke the kiss, trying to catch your breath. “Do you like it?”

“I love it. And I love you,” Rafael replied, pushing your hair back.

“Look, your mom gave us your abuela’s ornaments,” you replied, pulling Rafael towards the Christmas tree. You gently tapped a lace ornament.

Rafael’s eyes watered as he took an ornament in his hand. You wrapped an arm around Rafael’s waist and rested your head against him. Rafael kissed the top of your head. He looked behind you and towards the mantle, his eyes tracking the stockings that hung. “There are three,” he noted curiously.

Rafael walked to the third stocking; he looked at you, his eyes watering once more. “It says ... are you?”

You bit your lip, nodding. “Yeah.”

Rafael swept you into his arms once more, twirling you in his embrace. He set you down gently, your back to him, with a hand firmly pressed against your abdomen.

“I’m sorry I haven’t been around. I’m sorry if I’ve been distant, Rafael apologized, his voice cracking a bit.

“Don’t,” you shook your head. “I understand. It’s okay.”

Rafael pressed a kiss into the slope of your neck. You both watched the decorations and lights sparkle on the tree. Rafael knew somehow, with you by his side, he’d get through this tough time. Rafael also looked forward to the future and the new beginnings that awaited the two of you.
