Thoughts on Jack Morrison (and the fall of Overwatch)

Jack Morrison is considered the face of Overwatch. He was the squad commander, appointed over his best friend Gabriel Reyes, much to his annoyance. From the outside, he is perceived as he’s been genetically modified to be - the perfect soldier.

However, after the bombing of the Swedish base, which ‘killed’ Morrison, you can tell these morals started to crack. He ultimately started valuing his own safety and priorities over the innocent. In the cinematic “Hero”, he hesitates for a few moments before saving the little girl. He’s not fully gone, but even in his dialogue clips, you can see the true complex of Morrison seep through into his ‘strong leader’ persona.

As unfortunate as it is to say this (as I love Jack Morrison more than anything), he’s not morally… perfect. He pins the blame for Overwatch on those he overlooked, deadset on his own priorities to the detriment of his and others safeties, and he refuses to accept responsibility for the fall of Overwatch. A perfect example of this is the voicelines where he blames Genji for the reason Blackwatch spiraled out of control. However, peer below the surface and you can see Morrison did have a part in letting Blackwatch get to the level it did. It’s stated that him and Reyes were war buddies, so he would defend him even knowing his morals. He ignored Blackwatch until it reached critical points, ignoring the rising rage of Reyes and the outside world for his own goals until it ultimately stabbed him in the back again.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Soldier: 76 more than anything. However, to say he’s the ‘good guy’ is just wrong. Even the developers have stated there’s no right or wrong person in the Morrison-Reyes conflict - rather it’s just an unfortunate case of two stubborn mules.

Anyway, there’s my thoughts on Soldier: 76. I might do a post like this on Sigma or Reaper next, but if anyone suggests a character I’d happily do it because the hyperfixation is going absolutely bonkers right now. Thanks for 50 likes on my first ever post! :)

Overwatch Brain Thoughts While I Wait For My Headphones To Charge

(That are mainly about the junkers bc they plague my mind constantly forever always)

The way a lot of those interactions between the junkers and overwatch members make it sound like these fuckers just hang around the base and the rest swear up and down they're not affiliated with the group. Namely the 76 and Junkrat line about the state of the kitchen. The interaction between Junkrat, Kiriko, and some overwatch members (I've only heard Winston and Pharah) about Peter Piper is also something pertaining to this. "Damn yall are loud" "Oh, no, we don't know him" sounds very much like a "dear god just don't acknowledge him and he'll go away" thing and it makes me fucking explode with laughter.

I'd makes sense of their improvements if they were at least around Overwatch facilities. They have access to medical help, new clothes, and better material for gear, weapons and Junkrat's prosthetics. It's either that or they actual spent some of that money they stole for better shit. Who knows as of right now, but personally I like the "junkers fuck around the Overwatch base" shtick.

That being said, I'm 100% in believance that Roadhog and Ana would be buddies purely because of the "stay out of trouble nana" interaction. They have tea and knit together or something. idk, I just think they'd be chill.

When I first heard Junkrat's "If only mum could see me now" line I stopped in the middle of fucking combat I was so taken aback with emotion. MY BOY, MY LITTLE GUY......

I ADORE SIGMA AND SOMBRA'S FRIENDSHIP. Sombra is so sweet and concerned about Sig and his well-being it makes me explode. Sigma sounds so happy to see her in the "hm? Oh, there you are, my friend!" Interaction I CRY THINKING ABT IT.

Ok that's all my thoughts for now my headphones ate charged and it's almost 3:30 ay em. May post another part of this if I feel like it. If so it'll be here <333

On one hand I am very upset that Jack didn't get a skin this season.

On the other hand my writer brain is laughing cause I know damn well that a mirror version of Jack Morrison, a character that literally is the opposite of Jack.

Would be retired.

Like, full on faked his death to go into retirement. He probably founded Talon and did a bunch of evil shit but I can not get out of my head that a character who is literally the opposite of the Soldier 76 we know and love would be someone who looks out at all they've done and goes, "You know, I think it's time I retire".

Also I think it goes unsaid that the literal one universe where Jack isn't loyal to a fault, isn't good to a fault (ignoring Starwatch but I have thoughts on that for a different post), is the one universe that he gets peace, is a fucking gut punch to what's happening to him in cannon.
