Having just finished The Last Airbender I’ve realized I’m a massive hypocrite about a very important topic.

Rehabilitation vs Punishment: a rant about the American Prison System where I shove social justice into a cartoon made for kids.

So there are four main ‘villains’ from the fire nation. Ozia, Azula, Iroh, and Zuko. All of these people have done horrible things. All of these people have killed innocent people. But while two of them have a seemingly standard villain takedown, the other two become loved heroes.

Azula and Zuko start from very similar places. Both horribly abused children pitted against each other and told they can have whatever they want as long as they have the guts to grab it.

So why did Zuko end up good? Because he was in the scapegoat position and had his mother to back him up for the first few years of his childhood, and Iroh for the rest. The scapegoat gets blamed for everything and everything is their fault whether it was or not. This means that Zuko has a frame of reference for what punishment feels like, in short he has empathy. He also has 2 authority figures in his life who love him unconditionally, and stand beside him through everything.

Azula doesn’t have anyone backing her up. She has no safety net. She’s the protegee golden child and from her point of view one wrong move is sudden death. This would make anyone a cut throat, cold blooded asshole, but in her situation ‘the wrong move’ is showing basic human decency and compassion. By her very position she is not allowed to show empathy. She’s got just as much of a gun to her head as everyone else.

And when someone’s had a gun to their head from birth, taking it away from them can be a challenge. This is why Azula’s take down doesn’t feel triumphant. It feels like stopping a raging and terrified animal from hurting itself or anyone else.

A support system vs no support system.

Zuko represents rehabilitation. He made mistakes, recognized them, and with the help of those who cared about him spent the rest of his life doing better.

Azula is only at the made mistakes stage. What would happen if she was sent to prison to rot for the rest of her life? Well she sure as hell wouldn’t recover her sanity.

So on the punishment root you now have an insane, highly skilled, incredibly powerful person who has only known pain and still thinks the gun is still to her head. And she’d be right about a gun being to her head, but instead of her father the gun is now prison life.

What about rehabilitation? Well, keep her somewhere she can’t hurt anyone including herself. Then just show her genuine kindness. She recovers her sanity as she sees she’s no longer in danger. There’s now a safety net below her and she is free to make mistakes without feeling like she’s going to die.

Even if she never can be released into the general public again, option 2 is obviously better for everyone involved. Insane Azula on a warpath is the worst case scenario, yet in US prisons the worst case is the standard.

What I’m saying is everyone can be redeemed or at the very least improved by giving them kindness and support, and everyone suffers by ripping that kindness and support away. Some people can come to the realization themselves that they’re heading down the wrong path, others won’t believe it until they’re shown because they’re just in too much pain to let their walls down and introspect.

First of all I love love and love your writing, nobody does it like you!!❤❤ So I was wondering, how come that Zuko doesn't spend time in the 'throne room', in the series the room is used to discuss politics and such matters, and with the plan on building a new city, this room must be used pretty frequently. Is it because of bad memories that he is avoiding it, or is it because of other reasons? I hope both you and your fiancé are staying healthy!

And I’ll be honest, that’s a really interesting question you asked and I think it comes down to Zuko’s overall maturing personality and ruling style!

CUE THE LONG RANT

In the show, the throne room is depicted to be this extremely gaudy space. During Ozai’s ruling, he was always sitting on his pedestal with flames everywhere, or at the head of the table, where he was once again, higher than everyone else, dictating his beliefs. You didn’t go to the throne room for a chat - if you’re summoned its because you fucked up or Ozia wants something from you.

In other words, Ozai was always asserting his dominance, he wanted everyone to listen to him like he was a God: fear him.

I think it’s safe to say that Zuko wouldn’t want to rule like his Father (for obvious reasons) - resulting in a huge shift in terms of ruling.

Zuko saw first hand how the Fire Nation was viewed as a symbol of fear, and Zuko would want to change that. Zuko also doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would enjoy such a gaudy style that the throne room was shown as.

Throughout Limerence, you’re totally right, the use of the throne room is sparse! It was only used when the Earth King arrived and when Zuko made a plea for Yue to stay as his consort. But during all those moments, something to note was that while Zuko sat at the end of the table he didn’t do much talking.

The throne room isn’t so much of a throne as it is a space for people to communicate. Ozai wanted people to fear him, Zuko wants to earn respect.

The ‘throne’ room is just another room to Zuko for meetings, a more comfortable space suited for large crowds or important discussions that require urgent attention.

His study has taken on the role that the throne room once was - catering to more interpersonal conversations, in a more relaxed and casual setting. Don’t get me wrong, you piss off Zuko, he will tell you off in his office. But overall the study is a safe space for people to come and discuss new ideas or the progress of ones already implemented.

So I hope that answers your questions lol - and I’m sorry for the word vomit that has been induced 🤣 I just feel like it is a deeper question than one would think, and it really shows how much Zuko has changed from the show, through the comics, and now.
