I just woke up from a horrible nightmare.
I was in a haunted version of Peach's castle, and I was constantly being chased by horror versions of Mario and Peach. The only way to get them off my tail was to hide in empty chests. I was basically experiencing Another Princess is in Our Castle, except the jumpscares would never end.
There was a point where I finally had enough and decided to exit the castle, where I was met with a huge body of water containing destroyed boats. That's when I decided to make a beeline toward any Toads that might be able to help. Another person I was trapped with told me that the castle was truly inescapable, but I didn't care. I just wanted to get as far away as possible.
Then, I woke up in a cold sweat and thought, What if I was the ghost all along? What if I the castle was my purgatory?

The artwork vs the reference. ♥
I wanted to practice my hand at some Mario 64 background art. It took my all to change as much as possible from the OG and not be a stickler for perfection.
I'm trying to do better with just making the background pieces obvious without filling in so many details.
The file will go up on my ko-fi next week sometime, or you can get it for 20 on my patreon without the overly aggressive watermarks~. ♥

Thinking about something:
Fact 1: While Emulator is the physical embodiment of the SMG4 universe in general, she's specifically the physical embodiment of the actual Super Mario 64 game.
Fact 2: The main hub area of Super Mario 64 is currently sitting broken and diseased at the bottom of a highly corruptive malware-infused Demon Flesh Pit.
Fact 3: We've established in the past that code beings are resistant but-and this is crucial-not immune to most character-level corruptive influences, especially ones originating from TV Adware like the Flesh Moss Keyboard did.
I'm going somewhere with this (:

Long time ago, (long before the events of Super Mario 64), this statue was originally made to be a center piece as a coronation gift to Princess Toadstool/Peach. But one day, something foul, powerful and dark somehow turned the statue into it's vessel and body...
There have been incidents of Toads being supernaturally terrorized by this statue-entity, whether if it caused Toads to become lost in Castle Toadstool's deep hidden hallways, getting awful nightmares and being attacked by strange apparitions of familiar foes?
Eventually, Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom Authorities got a hold of the statue with the help of a good Magikoopa. The good Magikoopa put the statue-entity a sleep with neutral magic and The Toad Knight Army tried to bury the statue underneath one of the lowest basement rooms, deep within Castle Toadstool's unused, huge internal plexus to try to stop it. But this only temporarily fixed the problem...
Pink Gold Peach is not my character, Pink Gold Peach is the intellectual property of Nintendo.

Already straight off the bat we've got the super mario bros. 3 chests on these atm machines!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this was shown in the first poster too, so that's not too big of a shock, but it's still an awesome detail!
The background music here is FROM THESE TOAD HOUSES!!!!
Tumblr media
This looks to be the pipe equivalent of a train station? I love how the different lines are different power-ups!
Tumblr media
THIS FACE IS SO FUNNY UYFGBEUYFGHEUFGHEUFEGFU
Tumblr media
The way i screamed when i saw this!!! I hope this means more of Odyssey's world-building will come into play, at least in background details!
Tumblr media
TOADETTE SPOTTED!!! It looks like she's in a band!!
(Also I love the music playing in the background!! It's such a fun rendition of the original theme!!!)
Tumblr media
Again, this is something we already got to witness in the original poster, but I'm still in love with it as a fun concept! The lore implications are a bit wild though if you think about it too hard.
(They toads are talking about a warp whistle!!)
Tumblr media
The Toads have the builder suits from Mario Maker 2!!!! I love that they're pulling in so many details from other games! I love how the builder suit power up is used on the sign.
Tumblr media
Grapes are a type of fruit found in the Mario franchise as well as on Earth. (Jokes aside, love the use of the Yoshi's Story sprite!)
Tumblr media
THE MAPS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOOK AT THEM!!! THEY'RE STYLED LIKE SOME OF THE OG GAMES!!!!
Tumblr media
This shot is just so cool, damn. (Clear pipes! Mushroom house variety! All of it!)
Tumblr media
"Okay, so these bricks are just floatin' here?" Was that-- can it be? No, surely not-- maybe--
Chris Pratt actually had emotion in his voice??? And a noticeable accent???
Tumblr media
Melons my beloved <3
Tumblr media
Well I guess that answers my question about accessing Peach's Castle when it's up on such a high plateau... Ouch.
"Here we are! Palace doors! Bing, bang, boom!" Toad is so cute omg
Tumblr media
Ignoring toads face, this SHOT! THE CASTLE! IT'S SO ELEGANT! The flags are the ones from when Peach gets to the flag in 3D world!
---
Y'all I'm so excited I might die. I'm especially in love with all the instrumentations here! So many little motifs and references!!

👑🍑 Dear Reader, please come to the castle. I’ve baked a cake for you.
- - - - -
Peach’s castle! This took too long to do lol (but don’t they always?). Like a lot of people, I am very caught up in the hype of the upcoming Mario movie; I think it looks great, not to mention it’s just gorgeous. And these games, also like a lot of you I’m sure, are what I grew up with and are still games that I play today. Also, it’s been a while since I’ve drawn a game landscape (the last one was BotW’s Satori Mountain about 3(?) years ago?), so we were long overdue for another one (plus I just wanted another wallpaper haha). The design elements behind Peach’s castle were inspired by multiple games and spin-offs, including Super Mario 64, Paper Mario: Origami King, Super Smash Bros: Melee, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Odyssey ✨ The foreground, mid-ground, hills, and greenery, as well as the overall composition, were inspired from New Super Mario Bros. Wii ♥️ This was tons of fun; I don’t work with Nintendo-style stuff super often, so this was delightful. It was originally going to be lineless, but that never looks good for me so here we are 😅

Mario and Wario in front of Peach's Castle
*in the pure evil path Wario can destroy the castle and turn the entire Mushroom Kingdom into a crater* inspired by the image where Sonic and Shadow pose in front of the White House in the game Shadow the Hedgehog.
