#hawkeye pierce #MASH #there is of course also the constant mist of gender/sexuality queering that hangs over the narrative because of its structure #its structure as comedy (often subject to whimsical departures from acceptable gender/sexualities)#its structure as anti-establishment and anti-conformity #its celebration of non-conformist personalities and lives and its redefinitions over and over of madness and mutual aid #its structure - of course - as found family #its structure as an island in a sea of militant and fascistic surrealism and answering the questions of:#well what does the alternative to that violence look like?#so the idea of intentionality/unintentionality sort of doesn't matter #because it's creating a manifesto/ethos of sorts that speaks the same language as queerness #and it's down to the DNAs of its structures #(not even mentioning the structures of echoing the realities of those making it -- ethnicities - romantic lives - cultures and religions -#friendships and political beliefs - family structures created on the set of the show itself)#but yes hawkeye pierce is depicted as fascinatingly overtly queer and comedy is (like horror... which....) an acceptable space #for him to be this #(which -- when the horror and tragedy takes more of a front seat his funny-man queerness is somewhat diminished #but a. still very much present b. given an air of drama that legitimises it further c. underpinned by seasons and seasons of existence #d. embedded in that self-same DNA of the structures -- he IS the main POV character #which means he's carrying so much of that idea of non-conformity/civilish disobedience as good and right/whimsy/gender-and-sexuality/etc #so you see... there's whatever is happening with hawkeye pierce M.D.

#i have versions i like the vibes of #i have versions i like the pacing of #i have versions i like the writing of #i have not a single one that manages to hit even 2 out of those 3 criteria #Like. I think part of the issue is the setting is dreamy its soft and floaty and things arnt Right #but the first thing that happens is a guy loudly boasting about how much hes going to enjoy sexually assaulting his deuteragonist #hes lying. but Toi'uhla doesn't know that. The people ze is choosing to sacrifice zerself for dont know that.#the child whos experiencing the fear of death for the first time doesn't know hes bluffing either.#and the entire time theyre on a boat thats floating in empty nothing in a universe that has no stars left.#So much of making a tangible Threat like that hit is slowing for a moment and describing the ugly details of like #existing. as a physical person in a physical world. This horrible thing is happening and while it does the wind is messing up your hair #That sort of thing.#But there is no wind. there is no water. or rain. Toi'uhla's sense of smell is almost non existent. so ze cant think about the body oder #of that many people in that close of quarters.#And all while this is happening. i have to set up that these are two alien species with distinct cultures and Very different perspectives #on what is happening. Lordakai Senior is the one who lead the raid that killed Toi'uhla's sire and zer siblings.#But ze only knows the name Lordakai. bc for Zer it is completely reasonable to assume that the two Lordakai's are the same guy #Koita are long lived. Toi'uhla has never had reason to learn how to tell how old they are #Lordakai jr is absolutely riding on his dads name. but he doesn't know his dad was a privateer #So like. Theres a lot of shit happening in a weird setting #With two characters that need to Mesh while both putting up complete fronts.#and it needs to set up the stakes and themes for the rest of the damn story.#qnd its just a lot man. I love this project. i love these characters. but there's so many moving pieces bc theres had to be to make enough #Stuff to fill out the long spaces where they're just. on a pirate ship. being bored.#im probably over thinking this #blehgh

not me importing my anti-air defense worldbuilding h/cs into ishgard bc I can

#saint.txt #long post #ishgardposting #tl;dr in my personal project one of the big things is that (one) military has had to evolve alongside gryphon riders for a long long time #who's biggest threat are information gathering and the fact they drop flechettes and are nigh-untouchable by anything even each other #even with firearms (which are still very early tech-wise) so anti-air defense is paramount #the biggest results being that *everything* has a roof on it to mitigate stuff falling from the sky.#cities are cramped and avoid open space as much as possible. anti-bird spikes but scaled up on steep roofs so that birds can't land.#buildings are made of non-flammable material like stone when possible. open areas exist mostly as corral zones so that tired birds #must land there and can be easily surrounded on the ground.#but the flashiest is killwire which is basically just wire strung between tall buildings that discourages flight below a certain level #and is difficult to see especially at speed or at night #and if you hit it. well. the idea is based off motorcycle accidents where people have hit wire fences on farms so I'm sure you get the idea #not all of it will apply to Ish.gard but I highly believe that's exactly why Ish.gard is 98% built out of stone #as are all their forts and important structures like bridges. I also believe realistically most streets should be roofed if possible #and open space is kept at a minimum even if daniffen's ward exists. anti-dragon spikes consisting of slots to put lances in on roofs.#Ish.gard might not even have much of a need for 'traditional' forts with huge walls and such bc 90% of their enemies fly so their fort #designs might get a little wild after 1000 years of war. w/ magitek via stephva.nivien you might even electrify the killwire.#ofc some of it already seems to exist - ish.gard's roofs and spires are built *very* steep which would make a dravanian landing on them #difficult and even without that most of them are covered in spires and spikes anyway but. ofc there's the dragonkillers and such too but #ish.gard is a city built on 1000 years of war and hyperspecialized to fighting dragons that fly we really could make it look like that too.#I want to walk into ishgard and immediately know this is a place built on war bc everything about it is hyperspecialized and utilitarian #to fulfill that purpose. look up in ishgard and the stars are replaced with glittering wire.

here to offer a spicy addendum to the 'luthien was shit at politics' agenda: luthien comes by it honestly because her WHOLE FAMILY is shit at politics, or at least at foreign policy. melian is good at Advice, thingol is good at Dramatic Declarations, and if doriath had ever had to do any sort of genuine politicking with people outside the girdle whoever they were up against would have eaten them alive

...seems very likely. I was going to say 'they did okay with dwarves during the YoT era,' but uh. That depends on whether you consider the hunting dwarves for sport period canon. :/ Maybe Thingol is just kinda average (charismatic but not... manipulative? ), and Melian went to the same school of political thought as Manwe (ie, none), and then Thingol left Luthien's political education to Melian, on the grounds that an ainu education is best. (I mean. It's clearly great for singing and healing and fighting umaiar! Just... not for understanding why it's a good idea to know about the political players outside your walled garden.)

Elwing did okay in Sirion, though, so I'm going to credit that to Nimloth's genes (and being unable to afford the luxury of ignorance).

#Tolkien #I personally tend to interpret avari (and to a lesser extent sindar) political loyalty to thingol in the first age as...#Not wanting their culture to be trampled by noldor? Moreno than much genuine regard for thingol #I'm sure plenty of them like him! But he's also *useful* to them #And once thingol (and melian) are gone and no longer useful... political acumen counts a lot more #Like any political situation there's a lot of space for variability!#But I think thingol benefits A LOT from being the only non-noldor major political player #If thingol hadn't already existed the sindar and avari would have invented him to maintain ANY degree of political independence #San shoots the breeze

i love my go to method to making a place look cluttered and Lived In in my illustrations is to have papers tacked on the wall or on corkboards and shit

#nothing screams This Is An Environment like sticky notes everywhere #in my experience #my next apprach is usually stacks of books with papers sticking out #im usually terrible at drawing nicknacks in spaces just cuz it looks cery Dead and uniform #i try to use my own space as a reference but frankly i have So much shit and its usually small and doesnt match the vibe of whatever im draw #drawing so its usually not very helpful #so papers on walls is usually my go to #anyways im impressed vy how this is looking tbh #the color and rendering is going to be a fucking nightmare #michi tag #i debated drawing a lamp but i think the presence of a lamp that isnt even on will detract from what im trying to say #anyways im not usually big on like backgrounds and environments so this is a really good exercise to flex those non existent muscles #i think what makes it easier is that its fairly zoomed in so i dont have to draw a giant background for a tiny character and also #i had a pretty clear idea of what i generally wanted if not the minute details like the plant i added yesterday #ao its like ok a person hunched over a desk. blinds for the prison bar look a wastepaper basket for the MANY scrapped letters. aers everywhr #everywhere. thats the general idea so i just add the major elements and then go ok how do i fill in this empty space and just start adding s #shit. looking up reference pics helps too cuz idk what people normally have on their desks #i fucking love talking abt my art process bc if someone asked me in real life i couldnt say anything but if im talking to myself i have so m #much to say. no one wver asks the right questions during critiques anyways

#the game has all these fucked up poorly implemented mechanics #the tutorials for these mechanics are non existent #the gunplay is just fallout #they made all these massive spaces and towns and just filled them with nothing #the characters that you start off working with get nuetered after the intro despite being the only two with any kind of fucking personality #i admit the new perk system is really nice i do like it #everything else in the game fucking sucks #i have never been more bored playing a space game #also THE BUGS
