the interview went surprisingly well, i'd say they were ecstatic that they even got a cv from someone in this field, and while i'm not too fond of the job itself, the place seems to be better than the ones i worked in before.

AITAH for telling my wife no?
My wife (35f) and I (38m) have been married for 12 years, dated for 3 before that. We have 3 kids (10m, 7f, and 5f). We both work full time in separate fields, she does some chemistry thing that I don't understand and I am a manager at a computer repair store my friend runs, and also a short story writer when its slow. She is definitely the breadwinner bill payer between the two of us, but I bring in the fun money for our family and would be completely listless if I didn't at least work part time. We also fully own our home because of her job.
Also, my parents watch the kids for us during the week when we are working. It's been this way since our son was born, and they've been doing it less since they are all in school. But it's free childcare, they refuse to accept money unless it's reimbursing for buying food.
Ok, now that all of that backstory is set, here's where the problem begins.
A couple of months ago my wife started pepper into conversations about a possible promotion coming up that would get her out of the lab and into a more "manage the lab team" position, with less dangerous hours for more pay. Ever since the first time she mentioned it I've been hyping her up and telling her she's a shoo in for the promotion, especially since she's been working there since her masters internship and now she has a PhD.
Last night she told me she was getting word today if she got it! After she left for work this morning I called my boss up and told him I couldn't come in today, and then told my parents the kids were saying with me. We spent the day cleaning the house, drawing congratulations cards, and making a congratulations banner. We also made a couple cards that say sorry and we love you for if she didn't get it. I was working on making her favorite dinner (lobster rolls with lobster bisque, because she's a fancy lady) when she got home earlier than normal. Everyone was surprised, because noone is usually home at this time and yet here everyone was. She got tears in her eyes seeing everything we were still working on, got down and hugged our two youngest, and said she got the promotion! Cheering all around! And that's when she dropped the bomb, saying we need to get a realtor in a state three away from us so we can relocate within the next two months.
I was stunned, and just said no, we arent moving for this promotion. In all of her talks she never mentioned that the promotion wasn't for the same location she's been at. All of our family is here, her parents and mine, all of our friends are here, my job is here. She insisted that she's mentioned relocating before but I swear she never did. That set of a completely new argument about never listening to her and only hearing what I want to hear, and how this will make it so I can stay home with the kids and not even need a fun money job. During this I noticed she was typing on her phone, and when I asked why she was multitasking an argument she said she was texting my parents to get the kids so they don't have to see this.
When my parents got here they congratulated her on the promotion and asked how long until we move.
She told my parents the promotion included relocation.
I'm typing this on the couch in the basement, because I can't face her right now. My parents knowing means she probably did say we would need to move if she got it. I don't want to move, I like my job, and our house. I like being near my parents. I know this would practically set us for life but I don't want to. I know I'm being selfish, and I know I must not be listening when she talks, but I still don't think she should accept the promotion. I still think no.
What are these acronyms?

Please help a Black PhD student!
23.8.23 Edit: Thank you so much to everyone who helped out! I'm in the clear with regards to my rent! I still need some help in order to furnish my apartment (we're gonna see how long I can sleep on an air mattress, but it's not the best). Anything would be appreciated. Again thanking everyone so much for sharing this post and giving what they could. It means the world to me.
(18.8.23) Edit: Unfortunately I still need help. They do want the full payment and have emailed me to remind me of my outstanding charges. Please give anything you can! Sharing this would also help a lot.
EDIT: Thank you so much to everyone! I was able to pay off half and I'll be talking to the management company about the rest.
If you still want to help, because relocating countries and furnishing apartments and starting a PhD is so expensive, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you so much!!

I know some people put their identities and stuff in posts like these so I'm sorry if it comes off cringe but

fuck, so, I'm moving from the Caribbean to the US to start my PhD and I'm so fortunate to be on assistantship but I don't and won't get a full paycheck until the the third week week of September, the first fortnight of work. But because I'm a new international student I need to be there almost an entire month before that, to set up and attend orientation etc. Things in America are so fucking expensive, especially when my local currency has a conversion rate of 7 to 1 USD. And there's so many hidden costs I feel like crying every day. My family is trying to help me but they really can't.
Tumblr media
Right now, while I already paid the security deposit for an apartment, they suddenly want over $1000 USD upfront, like by August 15th.. I've called and I've emailed saying I'm a new student, this must be an error or something but they've said nothing. and this is on top the $800 USD I'll need to ship my things. I'm so frustrated because I was so excited but things keep getting worse like yeah I do want to be the first person in my family to get a PhD and but my family is working their ass off to help me and I won't get any income at all from the school until September.
Tumblr media
that partial pay check won't help with anything and already comes too late so I would really appreciate it if anyone at all could help even a little it would be so appreciated.
so sorry for another post across your dash. I would appreciate it if you could just reblog this because even that would help.

If you had told Louis Tomlinson a year ago that he would be celebrating his birthday by kissing the man who is the love of his life on a Church Street park bench in Burlington VT as the snow drifted softly down, he would have told you that you were extremely imaginative. Or nuts. Both, maybe. Because he wasn’t looking for a career change, he wasn’t looking to relocate to Vermont, and he certainly wasn’t looking for love. But somehow, beyond expectation, he’s found all of these things.
It all starts with the rain.

I'd rather be called a TERF than be someone who is ok with TQ+ organizations dedicated to minors without the commonsense approach of vetting the adults in the organizations or someone who pushes TQ+ studies without caring that the author is a pedo.
By Genevieve Gluck April 16, 2024
A gay couple who co-founded a Swiss LGBTQIA+ youth organization are being investigated by the public prosecutor after sexually exploiting two teenagers who were in their care. The men had created locations for their youth group, Sozialwerk.LGBT+, for children aged 13 and up in the city of Chur and in the municipality of Buchs, Switzerland.
While their identities were concealed by the press in Switzerland, Reduxx is naming the men involved as Holger Niggemann and his husband, Björn.
Holger, 42, is alleged to have had sexual contact with two 17-year-olds who had sought help for bullying with the organization. Holger was a board member of the group at the time, while his husband Björn was the business manager. The two men are said to have had a three-way sexual relationship with one of the teens, a 17-year old boy, according to a report by Tages-Anzeiger.
Numerous documents substantiate what happened in the group, including text messages, emails and voice messages, reports Tages-Anzeiger. Founded in 2020, Sozialwerk.LGBT has received public funding to set up facilities for at-risk youth as young as 13 who believe they are LGBT+.
During an investigation into the allegations, local media spoke to fifteen people close to the group to check the veracity of the allegations. The majority of those who came forward decided to remain anonymous.
One exception is Daniel Huber, a former board member of the association, who, with one other board member, reported the couple to public prosecutor Annina Grob, co-director of Avenir Social, the professional association for social work in Switzerland.
“For us, the behavior of the two is a total abuse of power, and the young people also felt that way. I brought it up again and again,” said Huber, who attended the meetings as a teenager before joining the board in a leadership role. “It is important not to look away from such behavior.”
According to statements from anonymous sources, the Niggemanns also took the 17 year-old boy on vacation to Germany with them.

Reduxx can reveal that a Dutch-American academic with a history of advocating for the normalization of adult-child sexual relationships has had a working relationship with the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). Theodore Sandfort’s research has been presented at the organization’s symposium as recently as 2016.
Sandfort, a Columbia-affiliated academic and LGBT activist, previously worked with self-declared pedophiles in the Netherlands, documenting adult men’s sexual abuse of boys as evidence to support his theory that adult-child relationships are “predominantly positive.”
Prior to relocating to Columbia University, Sandfort received a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He was also the Chairman of the Interfaculty Department of Lesbian and Gay Studies at Utrecht University and Director of the Research Program “Diversity, Lifestyles and Health” at the Netherlands Institute of Social Sexological Research.
A faculty member at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health, Sandfort has also been employed as a Professor of Clinical Sociomedical Sciences, and worked at the university’s HIV Center alongside former WPATH president and Director of the institution’s Gender Identity Program, Walter Bockting. Like Sandfort, Bockting relocated to Columbia University from the Netherlands, having completed his doctoral degree in psychology from the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam.
Bockting and Sandfort also worked together in a professional capacity while acting as members of the editorial board for the academic journal Psychology and Sexuality in 2015.
The following year, in 2016, research co-authored by Sandfort was presented at a WPATH symposium in Amsterdam.
The paper, titled “Gender nonconformity and peer victimization: Sexual attraction and gender differences by age,” focused on the experiences of Dutch same-sex attracted adolescents aged 11 to 18. The study concluded that gender non-conforming youth were bullied by their peers, leading Sandfort and his colleagues to recommend that “key educational messages that address sexual and gender diversity should be delivered during childhood before early adolescence.”
However, Sandfort’s prior work dealt with sympathetic portrayals of pedophilic relationships between adult men and adolescent boys. In recent years, he has also had access to vulnerable youth in New York City’s foster care system, and, in 2020, he was dismissed from this position when his troubling research history dealing with the sexuality of children came to light.
In 1983, Sandfort authored an article for Youth and Society (Jeugd en Samenleving) titled “Erotic moments in working with children,” a small-scale study of sexual desires among five adult group leaders for the children in their care.
The men described deriving sexual pleasure from working with children, specifically when exercising together, bathing the children, or holding them on their laps. One man, identified as “Lex,” spoke of being aroused while “tickling” children aged “2 or 3,” wearing only his underwear, and proceeding to touch the toddlers’ genitals.

I've been following your job search/PhD applications for a while and am in the same boat with jobs. 🥲 I had a rejection email today and it was kinda funny so I thought I'd share with you:
I saw a job on LinkedIn and it said it was fully remote. I went onto the website to apply and registered first with my email (weirdly I couldn't view the job description anyway without signing up with my email??) then went to look at the description on the website just to double check it was the same info on LinkedIn. But it turned out it wasn't remote (it was hyrbid in the south of England, miles away from where I am, and they wanted someone in the office like 3 days a week at least) so I ended up closing the window and didn't bother applying since it wasn't even in a location I'm open to relocating to for a job.
I later got an email saying I should complete my application otherwise I'll continue to get reminder emails until I do, and there was no way to unsubscribe to their emails. So I emailed to say I was no longer interested and told them why, and then the next day they sent an automated email saying I'd been rejected???
I didn't even apply. 🤣
Someone probably got salty that I pointed out it said remote on one job description and hybrid on another. 🙃
Oh that sucks so bad! I also keep seeing stuff like that or "entry level" jobs requiring 3+ years and a portfolio.
Last year I applied for a traineeship at the EU Commission that I was rejected for and the other day I received a rejection letter for this year's traineeship despite not even applying this time?? Which means I technically received more rejections than I sent out applications???

Raised by humanitarian parents, Niamh and her older brother Alistair were Third Culture Kids (TCKS) which meant they frequently moved from one country to another every two to three years due to their parents' job relocations. Although ideal for travel enthusiasts, adapting to various cultures posed challenges during their formative years. They had to acclimate to new homes, enroll in different schools, forge new friendships, bid farewell to friends relocating elsewhere, and immerse themselves in new languages, cultures, and communities — a perpetual whirlwind of change. Despite facing challenges and personal constraints, Niamh remained steadfast. Deeply inspired by her parents' dedication to humanitarian rights, she leveraged her aptitude for languages to secure a position as an interpreter at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, concurrently working towards her doctorate in International Relations. Niamh has always been in constant motion — both literally and metaphorically. Whether it involved school, work, or a newfound hobby, she was perpetually engaged, seldom taking a break. 🍛🐈💤 for Daphne & 📚💔😥 for Rafiq <3
oc asks! / preferred ocs!
🍛 CURRY AND RICE — what does your oc's typical dinner look like? do they usually eat dinner?
daphne works at nova diner every day of the week it's open (so that's every day except for the tuesdays and fridays, used to be every day but then the other cook vanished so then she was the only one working in the kitchen up until yancey shows up) and on those days she makes a family meal! usually just with whatever is available at the time, but she's also brought in a bunch of stuff the diner doesn't have on their menu so she can make other stuff as well :^) it's usually easy stuff in big quantities like curry, soup, stew, stir fry, stuff like that!
on her free days she usually either orders something or makes something very simple because she wants to Vibe on those days. there's the rare occasions where she's feeling inspired and then she'll make something complicated for herself, or she joins forces with her sister morrigan and her father in the kitchen to make a big dinner for all three of them together :D
🐈 CAT — does your oc prefer a wide circle of friends or a few close friends?
daphne has a few close friends and likes it that way! it's mainly her coworkers at the diner because they're also in a band together (or at least a couple of them) and her sister is her number one best friend of all time, so everyone she cares about is basically within hand's reach and she likes that :^) makes it easier to keep in touch with them
💤 SLEEPING SIGN — is your oc a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper? how are their sleeping habits?
daphne is a very heavy sleeper which is mainly caused by the fact that she works entirely too much and entirely too hard. she comes home and the second she gets in bed she's just GONE. has to set 5-10 alarms for in the mornings to make sure she also actually wakes up again LMAO
📚 BOOKS — what level of education has your oc most recently completed/is currently in (GED, undergraduate, grad school, phd, etc)?
i'm dutch and don't know what those terms mean but rafiq has a bachelor's degree in media studies, specifically journalism! he wanted to pick up photography as well but then stuff happened which caused him to relocate to blightwood crossing instead, and he hasn't really had the chance to really do anything with his degree yet :( he would love to go back to school to get into photography as a professional as well but currently doesn't have the funds for that at ALL since he's still very much in debt because of his previous education
💔 BROKEN HEART — what are three of your oc's negative traits?
rafiq can be impatient from time to time. he's also very fast in the way he thinks and speaks which sometimes results into him being a little inconsiderate, but he also easily realizes his mistake and will apologize without hesitation. he can also be a little touchy
😥 SAD BUT RELIEVED FACE — is your oc prone to getting stressed out, or is it easy for them to keep their cool?
rafiq is VERY chill and tends to be the only one who can keep his cool while everyone else is stressing the fuck out LMAO he might get a little nervous about the situation but on the outside he won't let this show, knowing that trying to gain control of the situation again will help a lot better than also stressing out like everyone else. he's very good at "get yourself together" kind of pep talks to get others to focus again

Linguistic Jobs: Interview with a Data Manager & Digital Archivist
This month’s interview is with Julia Miller, a Data Manager and Digital Archivist who uses their Linguistics background to archive high-quality endangered language materials. As a recent PhD graduate, I greatly appreciated Julia’s validating advice that the absence of a tenure-track position or a position in the tech industry does not qualify as “failing”.  This message is on-brand for this series, as one of the intentions behind these interviews is to demonstrate that Linguistics training is applicable to lots of jobs, not just the academic ones. Additionally, this interview contains some refreshing and practical advice regarding postdoc and PhD management.
You can follow Julia on Twitter @Spectregraph.
Tumblr media
What did you study at university?
I began my undergrad studies in Portland, focusing on art (printmaking) and languages (Russian, French, German, later adding Arabic and Latin). I loved languages and exploring the patterns; at this point I didn’t know about Linguistics. After a short break from school and a bit of reflection, I moved to Seattle, enrolled at the University of Washington, switched my area of study to Linguistics and ended up getting the hat-trick of degrees in Linguistics all from UW: BA (1998), MA (2003), and PhD (2013). My research focused on acoustic phonetics and sociolinguistics; my PhD project explored acoustic properties of lexical tone in two dialects of the Dene language Dane-zaa, spoken in NE British Columbia. During my MA and PhD studies, I was fortunate to have been part of the DOBES Documentation of Endangered Languages program, working on a collaborative documentation project of the Dane-zaa (Beaver) language, which offered funding for tuition and fieldwork, as well as providing me with training in field methods, language documentation & description, and archiving. When I was in the final stages of writing my PhD thesis, I relocated to Australia and began working with PARADISEC, based at their node at the Australian National University (ANU), in order to expand what I knew about digital language archives, building upon what I learned working with the Language Archive for the Beaver DOBES project. I then received a Postdoctoral fellowship at the ANU**, working on another DOBES-funded collaborative documentation project, working with the languages of the Morehead District, Nen, Komnzo, Idi, Nmbo, spoken in the Western Province in Papua New Guinea. The postdoc work included phonetic analyses, sociolinguistic interviews, mapping projects, as well data management and archiving. Despite my love of phonetic description and social network analysis, by the time I submitted my PhD thesis, it was clear that I was more interested in data management and archiving than in linguistic analyses. This was a difficult, yet freeing revelation.
**I do NOT suggest starting a postdoc when you are still writing your completely unrelated PhD thesis! I submitted my thesis in between field trips to PNG.
What is your job?
I am the senior data manager for the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) as well as a digital archivist for the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (PARADISEC). I facilitate the archiving of indigenous and minority language digital material collected by CoEDL members and affiliates from the region, as well as other PARADISEC depositors world-wide. I offer training for researchers, students, and anyone interested in data management and archiving procedures. I liaise with other archives, cultural institutions, and language centres for collaboration. Despite not holding an academic position, teaching is still a large part of my daily work; I offer guest lectures in Field Methods and Digital Humanities courses and run intensive training sessions in digital archiving and data management for university researchers and job placement participants. I have developed curricula, technical workflows and archiving best-practice advice for audiences with different skillsets and goals. I also manage audio and manuscript digitising studios, where we digitise audio cassettes, reel-to-reel tapes, and field notebooks, etc. and I maintain a lending library of field equipment and offer training and advice.
How does your linguistics training help you in your job?
It would appear that my entire PhD path has prepared me for my current job. All the training I received in fieldwork, collaborative research, language documentation & description, and archiving allows me to understand the work our depositors are carrying out. I can offer informed advice and try to anticipate issues they may face in the field regarding data management, equipment failures, etc. And having archived my own materials in multiple archives, I can offer commiseration (and advice) as someone who has had to create metadata databases, follow strict formatting guidelines for A/V files, and adhere to deadlines based on funding agreements.
What was the transition from university to work like for you?
I am still working at a university, but the transition from an academic role to what is considered a non-academic role has been a bit of a challenge. I find I still do a lot of research for my work, and then try to pass on what I have learned in training modules and technical writing projects. I am fortunate to be in an environment that allows me to carry out what could be considered ‘supplemental’ work. Knowing that teaching and outreach are very important to me will help me on my career path as it evolves.
Do you have any advice you wish someone had given to you about linguistics/careers/university?
As a MA/PhD student, I would have loved to have been told of career options outside of Academia (or Big Tech), or even just been reassured that it is a valid option to not pursue tenure track jobs. I think many of my cohorts and I felt as if we failed or let down our professors by not getting a tenure track position in Linguistics. I’m glad to see that the culture of academia is changing and that there is support and advice made more available to students now.

if you’re hearing DREAMS by THE CRANBERRIES playing, you have to know ZAHRA HAMED (SHE/HER; CIS WOMAN) is near by! the 33 year old POSTDOC RESEARCHER has been in denver for, like, A MONTH. they’re known to be quite RESTLESS, but being INQUISITIVE seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble AIYSHA HART. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those WORN OUT DOCS, COLD HANDS AND FEET, HALF-SMOKED CIGARETTES AND FORGOTTEN CUPS OF COFFEE  vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the DOWNTOWN DISTRICT long enough!
Tumblr media
hello everyone! i am riina from the gmt+2 timezone and i will be joining you with zahra, my chaos academic who's currently going through bit of a hard time.
here's zahra's pinterest for the vibes.
FULL NAME: zahra hamed DATE OF BIRTH: may 11, 1990 GENDER & PRONOUNS: cis woman, she/her
ORIENTATION: bisexual OCCUPATION: postdoctoral researcher PLACE OF BIRTH: wilmette, illinois. childhood spent in minneapolis, minnesota FAMILY: mother, father, two cousins raised as siblings
HEIGHT: 5′10′’ HAIR COLOUR: dark brown EYE COLOUR: dark brown
trigger warnings: mentions of religion, infertility, emotional distress, and smoking.
she was born into a mixed culture and interfaith family. her mother's episcopalian, of mixed white european heritage, and her muslim father is originally from saudi arabia. she grew up speaking arabic with her father, and was brought up in his faith. that being said, her mother's religion was still very much respected and celebrated in the household.
while zahra would consider minneapolis her hometown, she was actually born in the rather tiny town of wilmette, illinois. her parents both worked at the northwestern university in nearby evanston and wilmette was simply a convenient place for them to settle down. the family relocated to minnesota when zahra was five due to a family emergency. following said emergency, zahra’s two cousins moved in with them and were henceforth a part of the family. so, while technically an only child, she never identified as such. zahra and her cousins are incredibly close, often referring to each other as siblings.
despite her status as somewhat of a miracle child - her parents had already come to accept they wouldn’t be able to have children of their own due to a host of fertility issues - zahra grew up knowing a lot was expected of her. both of her parents had grown up with very little and had been able to use education as their way out of difficult home situations. she doesn’t resent her parents in the slightest, but sometimes wonders what her life would now look like if she been given just a bit more space and freedom to discover and make mistakes. still, she’s grateful for the drive her parents instilled in her as it has helped her to keep going even during times of distress. that being said, she has unfortunately picked up a host of rather unhealthy coping mechanisms for said stressful situations.
after graduating from high school at the top of her class, zahra packed her bags and moved to durham, north carolina, where she would go on to attend duke university, studying religion and philosophy. she later completed her phd in columbia university, writing her thesis about religious dialogue and pluralism.
while her life hasn’t always been easy or uncomplicated, it has been rather streamline. she has struggled and put in an enormous amount of hard work to get where she is now, but things have generally gone well for her. however, she has recently gone through something of a personal crisis and is really struggling to find her feet again. to put it simply, zahra has become wildly disillusioned with the academia and is suddenly really not sure she’s happy with her choices in life.
her postdoctoral research has now taken her to denver where she conducts research in and around the city. well, that’s what she’s supposed to be doing. however, she has run into a real slump and is struggling to get anything productive done. her self-esteem has taken a hit due to the resent developments, as her sense of self has been so deeply intertwined with her academic and professional success. she recently did a disappearing act, leaving her life in nyc behind, and is currently trying to get her shit together. trying being the operative word. she knows she doesn’t have the time to fuck around, but that’s kind of exactly what she’s doing.
will become visibly grumpy when asked about the state of her research project. that being said, she is procrastinating by researching other things, and has, amongst other things, taught herself french while trying to avoid all her responsibilities. she will soon start picking up and abandoning all sorts of fun pastimes in the hopes of distraction.
while she can be bit of a hermit - she spends most of her time alone, trying desperately to read and write, or avoiding said activities - zahra isn’t the sort of shy, serious person people might expect her to be. she can be incredibly talkative and opinionated, even downright bossy, and genuinely enjoys meeting new people. sometimes she just needs a friend to drag her outside.
she’s one of those people who can look intimidating unless she’s making a conscious effort to appear approachable. while evidently very intelligent and well-meaning for the most part, zahra sometimes struggles when it comes to socialising and pleasantries. still, she’s genuinely compassionate and caring with a strong sense of justice. she tends to pick up little volunteering gigs wherever she goes and is the first person to help a friend with whatever they might need. you simply must actually ask her as she doesn’t always understand subtle hints or suggestions.
zahra arrived to denver around two-ish months ago, so here are some super vague connection ideas for anyone interested!
the stress has led to a lot of sleepless nights, resulting in her becoming a real night owl. she can be spotted frequenting places that are open late, and can be found chain-smoking and scrolling endlessly on social media. she would've undoubtedly run into some folks with similar schedules and habits.
a local who has volunteered to show her around. also, any people with fun, interesting hobbies. after forming some sort of a connection, she would undoubtedly pester these individuals to teach her stuff. your girl needs to be distracted from the looming doom of her research project.
zahra enjoys noisy music. so, a person willing to accompany her for any and all punk gigs around the area. she's her happiest when it's so loud she can't hear her own thoughts.
a volunteering buddy. could be almost anything.
look, she actually really, really loves people, and believes building and having a community is the single most important thing in life. just give her little friendships, she needs friends.
also, she actually does like to go on little dates, and is always keen to connect with people. so, you know, folks she's matched with on tinder and/or met through some sort of an activity.
anyone she might have met before relocating to denver. could've been in minneapolis, could've been in nyc.

anyway i’m about 4 days out from relocation to my new city so consider this the official “i’m starting my PhD in the U.S. this fall” existential reckoning post. i am trying not to throw up or combust about it but the theme of life right now very much is “i’m scared” / “do it scared!”. and i’m also very very excited.

— BIOGRAPHY
The eldest daughter from a family who has been connected with the fine arts scene for generations. Her father, several aunts and uncles, and many more cousins hold various roles within the industry, from collectors to curators to restorers. Not joining the family business was never an option for Laure, but she never contemplated the idea to begin with, far too enamored with her cushy lifestyle to ever give it up.
Initially started out as an an artist herself, often working with oil paints or charcoal, though she never turned it into a career. These days she solely has personal pieces in her studio, and the occasional gift to friends. Instead, Laure turned her attention to the business of art, how each piece exchanged hands and moved from museums to private collections. The wealthy have always used art as a means of displaying their opulence and it’s a well that never runs dry.
She gets her start at Sotheby’s, the famed London auction house that has relocated to the city. Her connections land her a prized role as an associate, putting her in direct contact with priceless artifacts and their owners. She deploys every tactic she’s ever been taught to build connections and become an integral part of the business. There’s not a single part of the auction process, from procurement to sale, that she doesn’t understand.
Laure meets her wife Kiri while they are in grad school, she for her PhD in European antiquities history and her wife in pharmaceutical chemistry. It is a match of opposites, but Laure is a woman who goes after what she wants. They are married on her family’s property upstate, and Laure finds a lifeline outside of her family and their stringent expectations.
She is 31 when she first learns of her family’s ties to The Syndicate, when one of her cousins becomes a loose end in one of their business deals. He was in charge of moving product between New York and Europe, and a mistake cost him his life. Laure steps forward to redeem the Rothschild name within the organization, offering her position at the auction house as a new method for the gang to launder stolen items. Millions of dollars worth of product are legally moved through their warehouses each day. What’s a couple million more?
She doesn’t tell Kiri about the new development at her work and doesn’t see the need to. She is family, but she’s not family. Laure knows the consequences for telling the Syndicate’s secrets, and she has no desire to get her wife involved with the darker parts of her world. What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.
At 47, she acts as the main Rothschild contact with the Syndicate, a recent promotion after the death of her father. She takes care to keep her hands as clean as the fake records she keeps, and her family's reputation grants her a bit of that flexibility. There are others within her family who are also involved in the organization but if something goes wrong, it's Laure's neck on the line.
— WANTED CONNECTIONS / PLOTS
FELLOW SYNDIES - What it says on the tin. Laure has been a part of the Syndicate for nearly 20 years, though she tends to stay on the shinier side of things. Her role is one of enterprise, putting on a good show so no one questions the darker underbelly of the organization. She’d probably work closest with the forgers, though anyone can ask for her smuggling services.
1% - Laure is born and raised as part of the 1% and it shows. She has connections out the ass, and if people haven’t heard of her, they’ve definitely heard of her family. There will likely be history, positive or negative, whether it’s directly between muses or indirect between their families.
ARTIST PROTEGE - A young, promising artist who could use a leg up in the world. Laure looks out on the world as it exists and mostly doesn’t see anything wrong with it. The strong (read: wealthy) at the top, and everyone else falling in line underneath. However, she does find it a shame that art itself has become so disrespected in the world by the general populace, and if there were to be an especially talented artist that catches her eye, she wouldn’t be opposed to helping them find some opportunities (0/1)
FLIRTATIONSHIPS/HOOKUPS - Laure and her wife are in an open marriage, which means she’s not opposed to finding new playthings every once in a while. The one rule is that they never take their fun back to their shared home. She also makes it extremely clear that there is no possibility of anything more happening, and any attempt to approach that topic will lead to Laure ending all contact.
OLD DOG, NEW TRICKS - Up until this point, Laure has been able to get away with not actually doing anything particularly bloody for the Syndicate. She is not one for assassinations or brutal retaliations, and it's obvious that she is not trained in any way. Maybe something can happen that requires that to change.
EVERYONE ELSE - If your muse doesn't fall into any of the categories above, it doesn't mean that Laure won't interact with them. Just be prepared for her to embody that one Ryan Gosling gif from Crazy Stupid Love unless you can interest her in some way.

Reduplicative paramnesia: “the delusional belief that a place or location has been duplicated, existing in two or more places simultaneously, or that it has been 'relocated' to another site. It is one of the delusional misidentification syndromes; although rare, it is most commonly associated with acquired brain injury, particularly simultaneous damage to the right cerebral hemisphere and to both frontal lobes.”
A few days after admission to the Neurobehavioural Center, orientation for time was intact, he could give details of the accident (as related to him by others), could remember his doctors' names and could learn new information and retain it indefinitely. He exhibited, however, a distinct abnormality of orientation for place. While he quickly learned and remembered that he was at the Jamaica Plain Veterans Hospital (also known as the Boston Veterans Administration Hospital), he insisted that the hospital was located in Taunton, Massachusetts, his home town. Under close questioning, he acknowledged that Jamaica Plain was part of Boston and admitted it would be strange for there to be two Jamaica Plain Veterans Hospitals. Nonetheless, he insisted that he was presently hospitalized in a branch of the Jamaica Plain Veterans Hospital located in Taunton. At one time he stated that the hospital was located in the spare bedroom of his house.
.
.
Amazing how common reduplicative paramnesia is in my dreams (see the dream where the Red Square of Moscow is in Germany). I always chalked it up to my fascination with geography… some inherent cartographical feature of my imagination, or the fact that I’m always looking at maps—Alex is often impressed by my ability to identify countries on a map, even small obscure ones. “How do you have such detailed knowledge of the Balkans??” The Yugoslav Wars, of course. Mark Twain once quipped: “God created war so that Americans would learn geography.” (You know, some time ago I was accepted to a Geography PhD program and nearly became a Marxist geographer.)
I would say that maps, usually hypermaps, appear in about 60% of my dreams. I’m always toggling between the ground view and the aerial view, trying to work out how it is possible that a location I know to be in one spot on a map has moved to another. In my Sunflower book I write, “We look at our mental map together, dragging the topography telepathically with our neural lace appendage, like Google Maps of the future. … Am I in the Midwest? I thought this was New York. But the world is such that the Midwest and New York are the same thing, as the storm compresses space and collapses the distance through geographic folding.”
How common is reduplicative paramnesia in the dream lives of humans?? Do dreams help us metabolize spatial knowledge, help us convert it to longterm memory? I wonder!
