Stardate 2024.03.13

Day 26

I found something interesting.  I am using a photo website called Picfair to sell my photos.  For a photographer, it’s great.  They take care of everything.  You just pay for the service, upload your photos, and set your price.

But nothing happens after that.

At first, I thought it was because my photos were not good enough, but when I changed my perspective and started looking at the website as a buyer rather than a creator, I found a different story.

Picfair is actually designed NOT to sell photos.  That’s right.  There is no marketplace where you can search for images.  The only way to buy images is if you have the specific photographer’s web address, and the only way to get that is for the photographer to self-promote.  The search bar only searches that photographer’s work.  And the only way to spread your work to the community is through the “Focus” articles that Picfair publishes.  But here’s the kicker, the Focus articles highlight the same photographers multiple times or they highlight images from sites that are no longer active, which means:

There is some kind of relationship between the author and the photographers who get promoted.  

Picfair is a stock photography collection hub.  Anything uploaded goes into their database and when you stop paying for the service, they get to use whatever they want.

Sneaky.

So yeah, I spent the rest of the day thinking about how to design a website that doesn’t prey on the artist.  I’ve got the prototype of an idea, but I’m not going to tell you about it.  Sorry.  

The weather is clear today so I think we will work on filming again if the boys are up for it.

Finding passion

I have recently discovered that everything regarding nature draws my attention and have started taking photos with my phone of the small things that we sometimes overlook and take for granted. Being a position where we have seen so much loss around us, we sometimes just have to stop and take in the beauty that surrounds us and be grateful for sight, as some wish to see. Be grateful for hearing as we hear the waves crash or the birds chirp in the distance. Just in general, be grateful to feel the afternoon sun dance on your skin. I am looking to further my newfound passion and have every intention of bettering my photos and even invest in a good camera in the future to be able to capture my moments of gratitude.
