Thinking about Susie teaching Ralsei about sarcasm, and realising that it's more than just a funny "haha let's corrupt the little cinnamon bun" bit.

See, Susie never quite says what she means - everything's couched in casual insults and performative frustration. And yet, because we can read between the lines, we know exactly how she feels about her friends and the situations she finds herself in.

Her teaching Ralsei about sarcasm - saying one thing and meaning another - could actually be seen as her attempting to teach him about the way she specifically interacts with the world... teaching him to look further than the surface detail of what people say and interpret the deeper meaning hiding in plain sight.

By doing this, perhaps what Susie is really trying to do is to let Ralsei into her world, so that he can understand her better... so that they can be better friends.

And oh, isn't that just the sweetest thing ever?

YEAH!! It’s not that I want Ralsusie to jump into a relationship either, it’s just that I see the dynamic building between them and adore it. The cotton candy date!!! The glasses! The Ultimate Heal!! I love what they can teach each other, and love what they can appreciate about each other.

I really do love from the glasses sequence how ralsei gets her to stop just by giving her a Look with his glorious anime eyes n asking politely… platonically or not, boy’s got her way more twirled around his finger than initially expected HAHAHA. God I’ve feelings on these two

i have a soft spot for a ralsusie especially a one-sided one… the idea of big tough mascgirl being a little bit tender about this prissy little dork who she’d probably have shoved into a locker under different circumstances is charming to me. he’s the first person she meets who, from her understanding, isn’t obviously intimidated by her and sees good in her (noelle is technically the actual first person, but susie didn’t necessarily come to understand that until spending time with her in chapter 2), even willing to flirt with her and tease her (again, probably the first time she was ever flirted with in a way she recognized). he only means it platonically, but she doesn’t really know that and she’s confused into thinking he Likes her and her response is to be the goofiest teenaged toughguy in the world about it, getting flustered and finding pretenses to drag him off and hang out alone with him. it’s very “human” and endearing. it also kind of parallels kris’s one-sided crush on her and i feel like if that crush is ever confronted or addressed this could be kind of a point of like. sympathy and understanding between them u know. “oh, so this is how kris felt” etc.

Kralsuselle Ship Breakdown: 

Krusie: Idiots. Goofball duo. They’re just as likely to hold hands as they are to slug each other and eat rocks as they are to hold hands and kiss Kralsei: Quiet, soft, but also goofs. Ralsei probably teaches them how to cook or like, knit scarves and they’re attentive and listen but keep getting distracted by other things Kriselle: Childhood friends to lovers. Bonding over their idiot older siblings, Noelle’s started to prank Kris back (like when she steps off the lightning pad if you do it to her), they match each other’s silly energy Suselle: Both so incredibly painfully awkward. They’re in a new relationship with no real established friendship to start (but like, a mutual admiration from afar and lots of chemistry) so they’re both like. So awkward holding hands or kissing each others cheek. It becomes very chivalrous because they’re both too awkward to move any faster Ralsusie: HOT MESS. Very needy. Neither have ever had any friends before, neither have ever had human connection before, so when that dam breaks they just go fucking insane, they’re like velcro. Canonically, Ralsei hugged Susie ONCE and she insisted on taking him on a cotton candy date so like Ralselle: I think they’re like 99% platonic, tbh, like. They both care about their partners so much that they hang out a bunch, and maybe try a date once but it ends up so friendly they just end up making christmas sweaters together and being like “Yeah no it ain’t there it’s okay”

My thoughts and ideas how the romance in Deltarune could possibly play out:

Note: Ships like Kriselle and Ralsusie are still valid and these are just my personal thoughts and some ramblings of mine, I'll possible write a longer essay about it when I play Chapter 2 again.

After playing the new Chapter it's pretty obvious that Susie x Noelle is going to be the endgame Ship. Susie is still a bit obvious about the whole thing but she doesn't seem to mind the idea and we still have 5 chapters to go so there's enough time to develop their relationship (the festival, the Sadie Hawkmans dance for example)

Toby knows exactly how fandoms work and when Suselle doesn't end up to be canon he knows that tons of people would accuse him of queerbaiting or they would be very sad about it, so Susie rejecting her would be pretty weird after all that stuff.

However there are some small hints that Kris is developing a crush on Susie (or a very strong attachment like they did for Asriel at least, however you interpreted Kris' behaviour) which would contribute to Kris role as a tragic character in the Story.

The Players are so invested in Suselle and Krisei that Kris own feelings are completely forgotten which fits one the themes of the game "your choices don't matter " which is 100% addressed to Kris as well and since it was Susie who said this to them at the beginning of the game, it would make an unrequired Love for Kris even more painful (or being some kind of third wheel when Susie and Noelle get together and Kris and Susie's relationship remains platonic on both sides)

Kris' suffering from lacking any kind of autonomy will be a huge theme in the game, it's strongly hinted in Chapter 2 with the Spamton conflict and Kris themselves not being very fond of Ralsei like we thought they are. Kris' view of their relationships vs the player's view (how we experience these relationships for ourselves) will be very different during the game.

While the Krusie ship is more or less dead, semi-canon Krusie from Kris' side is still very possible and would fit the narrative very well so I'm rooting for Kris to develop feelings for Susie because I'm also a sucker for unrequired Lovestorys, but that's just my personal take.

If you've got time, I'd love to hear any takes you have on the jock Susie and the studious Ralsei in a high school drama AU. Same details as provided in the ask I gave @vsa-pieldepapel.

Something I neglected to mention to your colleague however was that, at the time of meeting and doing work with Ralsei, Susie is already dating someone. Their relationship, at the time of Ralsei's arrival, is wonky and low-key toxic on her partner's part, but she refuses to leave out of worry for her partner's mental health. Only if her partner did despicable things beyond measure would she leave the relationship officially. (And from the looks of it, once they catch wind of Ralsei being in cahoots with their girlfriend, he'll quickly become a target of their schemes.)

So, with that in mind... if you have any ideas, lay them down!

Hey thanks! Glad you like the stuff, and indeed the main reason I got into drawing/writing so much Susei was that I was sick of waiting for someone else to make it lol.

I guess outta the gate I should say that I don’t much deal with love-triangle-esque scenarios; not to say they can’t have their own appeal, just that it complicates things too much for me, usually. The topic of toxic relationships resulting from mental health issues is a tricky one to approach. All the love in the world can’t prevent deep-rooted issues like that. I think a big factor might be that (according to how you described) Susie’s largely in such a relationship because she’s desperate for affection, rather than having any significant chemistry with her partner. Then along comes Ralsei, who gives her affection without qualification, which removes her main reason for being in a toxic relationship with this mysterious individual (I am unsure if you want to use part of the main cast for this role or if it’d be safer to use an OC). I’d like to think that she ax’s (ha) the toxic relationship IMMEDIATELY when her partner targets Ralsei out of jealousy and/or desperation, and I imagine it’s not a very clean breakup, knowing Susie. Tainting one of the few good relationships she has is absolutely not something she would tolerate. Regardless of how worried she is about the mental health of her partner, she can only take so much stress herself, and it’s entirely realistic that she refuses or even can’t deal with that for her own sanity’s sake.

With that out of the way, I’d see it as Susie attempting to keep her and Ralsei’s relationship (whether platonic or otherwise) on the down-low; then when the cat’s outta the bag, she just owns it (“Yeah, I’m dating him, so what?”). He doesn’t quite understand the initial secrecy but doesn’t much question it, since he’s the new kid and Susie seems cool enough to be friends with. He’s immensely patient with her when it comes to what she struggles with (read: homework, studying, tests, etc.) and always talks good about her, no matter what the other students gossip about. Susie tends to be dismissive of “the little runt” rather than malicious, but inadvertently admits that he’s got a heart bigger than anyone else’s (and the brains to boot).

Here are a couple fluffy scenarios I can think of, in no particular order;

Susie doesn’t normally care about school but needs her grades to be passable, and this new guy seems nerdy enough to help her.

Ralsei waits for her to finish practice so they can study together, and sits to the side as Susie practices. He’s enamored with BIG MUSCLES and Susie’s athleticism, while she’s trying to figure out why she’s so self-conscious practicing in front of Ralsei (“why do I wanna impress him, anyways?”)

(borrowed from Vsa lol) Ralsei sets up a sorta reward-system of food to motivate Susie to study, since she’s all-brawn-little-brains. She’s almost embarrassed by how effective it is.

One study night turns into a heart-to-heart between them when they talk about their struggles at school (Ralsei being the “new kid,” Susie being too intimidating to make many friends, etc.)

Ralsei (and by proxy Susie) are invited to a sort of mini get-together with Kris ( + maybe Noelle and even Berdly), and they subconsciously gravitate towards each other when Kris puts on a surprise horror film for them all. Berdly inadvertently spreads rumors about the two at school, leading to some questionable considerations on both their parts about the relationship they really have with each other.

Ralsei stays up super late compiling a study guide for Susie; the next day, he falls asleep against her shoulder while they’re reading together, and she just stays quiet about it (though has difficulty focusing on the book by that point, lol).

Ralsei tries joining her in sport for fun, he is terrible at it but Susie is enamored by his effort all the same. BONUS: He accidentally gets hurt (maybe twists his arm/leg awkwardly) and Susie carries him to safety/nurse’s office/etc. like it’s a life-or-death scenario.

Susie gets invited to a party for her athlete-all-star status, but only agrees to go if she can bring Ralsei since he’s never been to a party before; the entire night, she hangs around him, shrugging off everyone else and pseudo-protecting Ralsei from being made fun of at the “cool kids” party.

Susie gets picked to show Ralsei where everything in the supply closet is, and they both accidentally lock themselves in the cramped space, leading to Ralsei noticing just how much bigger Susie is than him (and vice versa).
