I try to think back to how the battle subway duo was treated before legends arceus. Growing up with gen 5 they always seemed mysterious. The only time in the plot you come across them is in black and white 2 where there's a double battle against them in nimbasa. Yet I remember knowing about them before that game and I wasn't super into the anime so where would I of seen them? I want good enough to find one of them in the battle subway...

Boom the strategy guide.

The whole battle subway section of the guide has these deep black pages unlike the rest of the guide which is on white. I can't recall another pokemon guide book that does something like this it's so tense and of corse it would be black and white to do something like this. Gen 5 has so much style to it, it's unreal.

I think what kept this section in the back of my mind was the artwork. Seeing huge pokemon like darmanitan and gigalith duke it out in this enclosed space showed that pokemon could mess you up if they wanted to. There is damage to the cartridge, big claw markes up the wall and twisted pipes. You never get to see this sort of damage in game other than in the beginning of the game which was probably why it stayed in my mind for so long.

As well Ingo and Emmet have somewhat unsettling designs. They both have wide puppet like mouths, Emmet grining while his brother is frowning. They wear long strange looking coats which cover most of their bodies. Although it may just be me who got weirded out by there designs as a kid.

Finally I would like to point out some other weird things about the battle subway this guide goes over. First of all Anville Town. I definitely remember going here as a kid but only after beating the game. It's so uncanny even if I remember going there when I was younger it being accessed in such a weird way makes it feel like one of those mario 64 was personalised levels, like it shouldn't be in the game yet it is and no one talks about it.

Secondly those tropies, they always looked like people to me and I don't like that about them. I also never did that much battle subway so I never won one so for me personally they have that this doesn't belong here feeling.

Last thing about the battle subway I find weird. Why is phione banned? It doesn't exactly have legendary stats and you can breed an infinite amount of them. However many more larger and more dangerous pokemon are legal. Heck you can bring in regigigas onto the train. I mean he's not good but he is legendary and big so he has that going over phione.

Anyway over all the battle subway is a weird and underlooked place and I'm glad legends arceus made people love the weird little cho cho train guys who live there. Hopefully that means more people realising anville town exists or better yet it gets more people to play these games because they are really good.

i played bw and bw2 a Decade ago so ofc i've forgotten a lot of details. one thing i forgot till last night was that n's encounter theme changes to something so much happier and whimsical in 2 and i am. dying about it
