An oblivious reader actually makes so so much sense- Zhongli is a very kind man who does sweet things for the people around him every now and then, so it's only natural you see his gestures as nice and friendly.

Gestures such as, oh, writing a poem about you and reciting it aloud to you. He tells you your radiance had inspired him to be rather romantic in his rhymes - and you'd taken it as the other kind of romantic.

Walking you home when you leave work late, to make sure you're safe. His close proximity to you and the way he holds your hand so assuredly is to keep creeps away, of course, and totally means nothing else.

Buying you little trinkets from the market, because "This reminded me of you, so I simply had to purchase it," or "I remembered you mentioning you liked this color so here you go," or "I saw these matching items on sale and thought each of us could keep one." Wow, what a great friend!

You tell him one day that you're yearning for romantic companionship, to which he tenderly responds, "So am I," so you look up at him, your eyes twinkling, and say -

Thinking about fresh faced little 20 year old Neuvillette five hundred or something years ago. All the other dragons are missing or dead so the Hydro Archon (previous) sends him to Zhongli for summer camp on being a dragon. He drinks a lot of osmanthus wine and "summer" lasts for six years. Zhongli gives him one piece of actual advice on scale care then goes on a tirade about how the last Hydro serpent he knew (Osial) was a bitch who stabbed him in the back. Neuvillette gets a complex over it.

Nothing about geo dragons translates over to hydro ones. Zhongli won't let Neuvillette go swimming because "dragons sink in water". A complete lie.

Venti would complain nonstop about all of Zhongli's shiny things being too jagged and uncomfortable for the creator to rest with, it's simply too dangerous and you deserve nothing but the softest and most plush fineries to rest upon, anything even remotely close to metal is completely out of the question

He already doesn't like the idea of someone else being in your designated space that he's created for only the two of you, but now that person just has to bringing their collection of trinkets into a place that he's striving to make comfortable? How uncivilized

(I'm telling you right now Venti would absolutely secretly collect as much of the Mora in that pile as he can in favor of spending it on nicer blankets and such, and Zhongli would absolutely notice and that would make the entire thing worse)

Now Zhongli is also appalled that Venti would even insinuate that you shouldn't be surrounded by the most valuable items in all the nation at all times, it's only right that the crown jewel of his most prized existences be surrounded by all the precious metals and gems he possesses, though they all pale in comparison to your own worth of course

And he would be particularly irked at all the feathers

Like ok, fine, blankets and pillows are understandable (assuming they're of the highest quality), but feathers? That float everywhere at the slightest gust of wind and are just such a nuisance to clean up? How incredibly immature and frankly unrefine

And that's when the competition starts, ie. "Oh well since you obviously prize appearance over comfort I decided to replace your mattress with your core lapis collection, I could use the extra mattress and you'd prefer it like that anyway right? Hmm, I guess that means the creator will have to sleep with me for a while~"

"Well since you appear obsessed with soft things I picked up a few stray cats on the way in, you know how the creator just loves how soft they are. That's not a problem, right?"

Yeah they're about ready to rip each other's throats out by the end of the week, you are literally the only thing standing in the way of a massive fight breaking out because that would be incredibly undignified and they're both trying to prove how their way is the objectively right way

Really the only solution is to just have two separate rooms and you alternate the days you spend with each or to divide the room in half with like a curtain or something so neither of them can see the other side, because no resolution is going to come out of them sharing the same space, and then you only have to deal with them fighting about who your spending your time with, as usual

Then there's Ei looking on at the scene playing out with confusion and mild disgust at their behavior, emphasising on how if you want a civil place to stay she always has a normal room open and waiting without any of their weird tendencies or quarrelling (but then you're gonna end up having to deal with Yae Miko's fox behavior so is it really much better?)

Now taking her up on that offer might just cause the two of them to finally put their differences aside for the mutual cause of getting you back, because let's face it, there's really no point of a nest or horde if you're not there

I think it's easy to forget that Genshin specifically states that Zhongli actually looks rather young, since he's one of the physically older playable characters and because his voices (in various languages) is rather deep, but the characters in-game (who don't know the truth) all see him as rather young.

So I found a draft of mine from when Fontaine was first released and Say Don't Go (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault) is stuck in my mind permanently. While I figure out a decent ending, here's a little bit from the beginning...

Childe had never once in his life assumed jail would be fun. He had no delusions in that regard. But he had to admit, his hopes were raised once he heard of the Pankration Ring in the Fortress of Meropide. A competition ring for those who had "extra energy" they wished to "burn out" through regular sparring matches? Sign him up!

His hopes were very quickly shattered once he was told that no, a Fatui Harbinger was not allowed to compete, because "no way anyone would sign up to fight him" and "even if he did fight with one hand behind his back, that would set the bar too high for the other matches, and the spectators would be bored." Damn it - so the ring wasn't truly for fight afficionados - it was a marketing ploy! The fight itself wasn't the focus, it was the fact that it had to look good for an audience...

Childe huffed as he sat in the bed he'd taken to occupying. Fontaine was getting on his nerves - it seemed as though everything was for show, and very little was actually real. Where were the Traveler or the Overseer when one needed them?! Oh, what he wouldn't do to fight against a decent opponent...

His boredom was made worse by the fact that the Overseer - damn them and their excuse of "immersion" - had decided to bench him until he was out of prison. So now he rusted away in the Fortress of Meropide, with no one to fight, no one to banter with...

He could try the Duke again, he figured. While at first things hadn't gone his way, after explaining his issue, Wriothesley had, once or twice, been amenable to a sparring match, and it was the one thing keeping Tartaglia remotely sane. But lately the warden had been more and more busy - and less and less inclined to indulge the restless Harbinger. Were it not for the fact that he already had an escape plan in the works, Childe was sure he would have lost his mind for real. He was getting rusty. Every day that he did not raise his weapon was one day he grew weaker, and that the competition grew stronger. And he knew he had competition, both among the Fatui - how he was the Eleventh of a group of nine still eluded him - and among the other vessels.

It *had* hurt, the knowledge that right after his banner would come that of the Iudex who'd promptly knocked him out and sent him to jail... and that he wasn't even there to fight him about it! He hadn't been aware of the sheer strength of Fontaine's Chief Justice, but now that he'd caught a glimpse, Childe had to admit he was intrigued. And by intrigued let it be absolutely clear that what he meant was "eager to fight him again". Hell, the judge had managed to knock him out while he was using Foul Legacy! What else was this Neuvillette guy capable of? And, more importantly... had you noticed?

It was a thought Ajax didn't like to have. One he'd been trying to drown out - hah! Drown! Now that his hydro Vision was gone, and Neuvillette was out there using hydro as he pleased - since he'd first been told he wouldn't be able to fight down here. And yet, now that the Fortress had quieted down for the night, there was no sound to overpower his own thoughts.

Continuing from our line of thought in our last conversation, with a Zhongli and Reader who share feelings but have yet to confess to each other/the slow burn of it all, until it is no longer slow

Just imagining a reluctant Zhongli letting her in when he catches the worry radiating off of his omega her; the sour scorch of anxiety in the pheromones he scents off of the air around her.

His heart shudders at the mere thought of having been the cause of her worries, basal instincts immediately surrendering to her will, desperate to relieve that knit in between his beloved’s brow.

Ushering her in to allow her a seat within his guest quarters, instead of his personal office space like he usually does. The latter housing much more of her... vivid traces from when she often pays him visits on behalf of Hu Tao.

Zhongli does not think he could control himself were he to take her to that room, watch her sit herself from across him, at his desk. Fixating a look of worry for him, smelling like that.

Zhongli’s next breath gutters out of his throat, as if to shred apart the very graphic, obscene image that bursts across his lids; how he’d rather have that beautiful body unfurled across his desk, smooth that frown into pleasure with the slow press of fingers she’d graciously allow him to ease in between her legs—

The next sound that breaks from him is carnal, unhinged; he smothers it against an obsidian palm — unravelings of his power, bleeding onto his appearance, with the vulnerability that comes with his rut — before his control can shatter entirely.

“Zhongli?” Wrenching himself out of stupor to catch the question in her gaze, the way her eyes flitter momentarily across the seized tightness of his jaw, the jagged edge of his fangs clenched in a white, bared snarl; he realizes belated, the threat he must present to her gaze, wild and unfettered.

He needs his mind off of her body — now — before it is her clothes he cleaves off of her instead. The only shred — sliver — of sanity keeping him together: his several millennia lived, the iron will of control he’s had himself subjected to, century after century — nothing, no lover, before, however, has tested his patience as she does.

And...

Zhongli frowns, pressing himself back into the seat farthest, from across her, dark fingers curling irons across the arms of the chair, holding himself imprisoned.

And the fact that they have yet to be bonded, leashes him most.

A most inopportune time for her to have turned up at his doorstep when his rut is close at hand, and that too for personal business, but Zhongli knows he must remain civilized; the gentle man she knows him as, he wishes to remain untainted within her gaze, at the very least—

And so he asks her about her day, in an effort to turn her mind — and his — off his current “ill-health”, he assures her is no cause for worry. A decision that turns itself into swift, vicious vengeance upon Zhongli instead.

“I spent my morning with Scara— ahem, Wanderer. He wished to repay me for my earlier help with a neutralising antidote, I mentioned it once to you before, Zhongli.”

Whetted fingernails carve just that bit more deep into the wood beneath his arms.

That son of Beelzebub, the one who looks at her with the eyes of a man; a gaze that dares want for what he desires. How dare a mere doll ingress upon an Archon’s claim—

“...With him alone? Did that bard... Venti not promise to accompany you on your commissions today?”

She seems mildly perplexed at the line of questioning. Zhongli, however, is in no state to help himself.

“Venti had a task come up he had to attend to with Mari.” She answers, at last.

And then Zhongli spots it: a scent, a claim. An oddity not her own; he failed to notice earlier by fault of his lust fogged mind.

The teal, dangling earring — not hers — she skips delicate fingers, along her earlobe, as if it is a precious commodity.

And he begs, in silence, for her to not speak what he does not wish to hear in that moment. Sickening, as the scent across that jewelry on his omega her body tinkers at the cage of a large, gilded beast deep within him.

She does not spare Zhongli that mercy.

“He gifted me this earring, as a token of our friendship, although he wasn’t very forthcoming with his feelings, as usual.” She smiles. “It is a beautiful thing, isn’t it? Wanderer requested, well, more like, ordered me to keep it on at all times, that silly man.”

Zhongli feels that exact moment of time his fingers jam at, in poor imitation of reigning in a long fled control — and fail — splintering through the arms of his chair.

childe really experienced a bad breakup, went on a wild goosechase around inazuma, then tried to go on vacation, instead got falsely accused of serial murder he couldnt have committed, humbled by a divine machine, humbled by a dragon, got sent to prison, became part of an ancient prophecy, fought an abyssal narwhal for at least 45 days, and then met his teacher, who ignored him for like 10 years and immedietly yeeted him through a quantum abyss portal back to his homeland with (supposedly) no answers.

If the theories are right and the Pyro Archon is currently dead and will be resurrection like the title of the chapter suggests, I want her to be a strong and respected woman.

Like, I know we’re already getting Murata and she’s gonna be a Murata Himeko expy (which I kinda don’t like but sure whatever Hoyo) from Honkai Impact 3rd, but idk I just feel like we need a single female archon that doesn’t have a bad relationship with her people AND is powerful.

Right now I think it’s safe to say that the power scaling of the archons is Zhongli, Ei, Venti, Nahida, and then Furina (I know she’s not an archon anymore I’m just including her bc I like her and I’m bias). Also, as an aside, this got to long so I’m putting it down here. I ranked Venti over Nahida not because her powers are weaker than Venti’s but because Venti has more experience. He can fight and knows the full extent of her powers and survived the Archon War; while Nahida would outsmart him no problem, Venti would overpower her physically I just wanted to clarify

Zhongli and Venti are from the OG Seven and have positive relationships with their respective countries. They’re both powerful and well respected.

Ei is hella powerful, but she did steal everyone’s visions so I don’t think she’s respected exactly. She’s more feared in my eyes. Like, absolutely, they respect her because she’s their archon and is powerful and is trying to change, but the people of Inazuma are very aware that Ei is capable of hurting her people if it means achieving her goal. OBVIOUSLY Ei herself doesn’t want to hurt her people and that was the puppet being tricked by the Fatui that did all that, but the people themselves don’t necessarily know that, so they just think Ei had a change of heart.

Nahida’s whole storyline in the Sumeru Archon Quests was reinstating her as the highest and most respected authority. Everyone loves her and for good reason! She’s great, and she’s doing her job as an archon really well. However, she is possibly one of the weakest archons due to age and experience. I can see her being a MIGHTY archon when she’s older, but how long is that gonna take? We’ll probably never see Nahida at her peak.

Then there’s Furina. Her storyline was AMAZING, I think we can all agree the Fontaine Archon Quests were great. However, Furina was seen as a joke or mascot by her people rather than an actual mighty archon. They just followed her because her voice was loud and she played the role well. Furina was never strong or respected, not until AFTER she lost her divinity for good.

Ei is strong but not respected, Nahida is respected but not strong, and Furina is not strong nor respected.

And this isn’t me trying to say Zhongli and Venti are bad or anything. There’s absolutely a discussion for misogyny in Genshin, but I’m not really opening that can of worms right now.

I’m just looking at the dynamics we have for the Archons and am hoping that we get a strong and respected female archon at some point.

It could be the Tsaritsa for all we know! The Tsaritsa is incredibly badass and there’s some indications that the intentions behind the Fatui aren’t that bad but their actions are, so it could be that the Tsaritsa is our strong AND respected Archon.

Yet, Childe’s line about her makes me think that people have their doubts, so is she really that respected as we think?

That just leaves Murata, and I am hoping that if the resurrection thing is about her, then I hope Murata is very strong and highly respected.

But if the resurrection is about someone else, say,the Pyro Sovereign, then I am BEGGING Hoyo to make the Pyro Sovereign a woman. We lost a female archon to a male sovereign I don’t want it to happen again.
