Henchwomen Through the Ages
The "ages" of comics are not hard and fast things, and even comic book historians argue where they begin and end. They're more like moods than time periods, and your standard game of Henchwoman RPG will probably be set in a vague time period that could be anywhere from the thirties to today with an overall Silver Age mood. Still, let's take a look at how the roll of the Henchwoman has evolved, shall we?
Goldie is a gun-toting, cigar-chomping bank robber in victory rolls and a bullet bra. She's not called a henchwoman- she's called "Look out, that broad has a grenade!" She's loyal to the boss despite his dumb penny gimmick, but if he ever finked on her in court, he wouldn't live to see the sunrise. There's no Henchwomen's Union for her to join yet, but she's provided muscle for plenty of mob-backed unions. Goldie can't afford to be soft on heroes since they'd be just as happy to throw her off a roof as to arrest her, but she might be wooed by an appeal to patriotism- she ain't no Nazi rat! Her hobbies include matinee shows, swing dancing, and blasting coppers.
Sylvia is a competitive surfer and was a cocktail waitress until they fired her for slapping too many customers. Thanks to the newly formed Henchwomen's Union, she's treated much better by her current job, which usually involves crashing parties to steal themed jewelry. She and the heroes she fights have an understanding- they'll never be rough with her, and she won't check up on them after putting them in a death trap to see if they've died. On her off hours, she can go dancing in the same outfit she worked in- a silver jumpsuit, gogo boots and a purely decorative motorcycle helmet.
Brawny is a member of the Sisterhood of Wicked Witches, and she fights for a cause- or rather, several causes. These range from the reasonable (Save the whales!) to the less reasonable (A free ray gun for every child!) The Henchwomen's Union is strong enough to get her good pay, so many of her problems are philosophical- is she a good guy or a bad guy, and what do good and bad even mean? Brawny has to be a bit more careful than she would have been ten years ago, since death may well stick- but that also means she might really kill a hero, at least for a while, and that's what matters!
Tenebra prefers to be called a Dark Muse, a member of a vampire circle dedicated to bringing art to life, painted in colors of blood. Her eyeliner is swirly and her gowns are velvet, and she wears them onstage in her sideline darkwave band. Tenebra arranges her crimes in accordance with pre-raphaelite imagery, with victims displayed in heartbreakingly beautiful and mythologically-influenced poses. Her boss may technically be the Queen of the Vampires, and she may have a card with the Henchwomen's Union, but her true loyalty is to art itself.
Ferra is a mercenary with a separate pouch for each type of bullet, and she has a lot of types of bullet. Her stilettos are tall but her hair is taller, and she can strike intimidating poses that would break a normal person's back. The Henchwomen's Union had its own back broken by the bosses, and is now more of informal underground thing, but it still hooks her up with real deal bad guys. She'll kill without a second thought for her boss, but she's only one bad day away from turning her gun on him. It might even happen accidentally, since he and the heroes dress exactly the same. Ferra somehow has a heavy metal soundtrack even when there's no music playing.
Ally got a degree in psychology but until she can afford grad school, she gigs as a henchwoman. Her bosses are sillicon valley dickheads, but the first one to offer her real benefits will have her loyalty for life. Thanks to the resurgence of the Henchwomen's Union, Ally gets to wear big stompy boots instead of high heels, but she still has to wear a big day-glo logo on her leather jacket that might as well be a target sign. Her hobbies include pop culture conventions, smoking weed and credit card fraud.

Permission Playlist!
So I‘ve tried to put together the songs which inspired me the most or that I remember vividly listening to, while writing chapters!
A lot of them just served to put me into a certain mood, so the lyrics don‘t necessarily match up, but the lyrics of most of the songs played a huge role. You might recognise some of them even 😋
Here’s the link: Permission Playlist
And if you haven‘t read Permission yet, here‘s Chapter 1.
Other than that, I want to give a little direction here, that you know which songs belong to which parts of the story, since sometimes they guided me for a whole chapter, sometimes a whole song for just a short moment! Sometimes the songs describe y/n’s point of view, but sometimes Sukuna’s too!
I’ve been writing Permission for over a year, so I probably won’t remember everything, but these were the most important ones I remember! I also tried to put them into order of when they fit into their moments or chapters:
(in-depth description (-ish) under the cut)
Song 1-15 (Wicked Games - Jenny Of Oldstones)
I listened to those songs mainly when I was planning the whole story. To give me moods, themes, emotions that I want to convey. I listened to the Game Of Thrones Soundtrack a lot in general, but those songs I listed in there were the ones who inspired me the most!
Fun fact here: Mado Kara Mieru from Christopher Tin was the one which gave me the most inspiration for how Sukuna’s melody would’ve sound like.
Song 16 (Serj Tankian - Rains of Castamere)
Basically my Soundtrack for Chapter 13 and especially the throne room scene, when the new girl arrives and Sukuna invites her in.
Song 17 - 21 (Obsessed - Entitled)
Those songs guided me from the moment when Sukuna saves y/n from the curses until the end of the camping arc. I don’t recall listening to music a lot during that time of writing, cause I acquired that skill only later 🌝
Honorable mentions here:
Zandros - Obsessed was for me the moment y/n sees Sukuna standing over her after killing the curses, seeing the snow flakes crash against his body. Idk this song carried the mood for me.
Adin - Somebody Else was one of the few songs that I connected with Sukuna’s pov.
Song 22 - 23 (Crash and Burn - Breathe)
Those songs described for me the moment when they return to the shrine and long for each other, before y/n gains the courage to knock on his door in chapter 24.
Song 24 Max Richter - On The Nature Of Daylight
I don’t remember clearly, but I think I listened to this to get in a sad mood to describe y/n’s pain when Sukuna left for war and she misses him dearly.
A good song in general to get a fucking sad mood tbh.
Song 25 - 27 (The Way - Violently)
Oh those were the songs I listened to when y/n follows him into the war. Chapter 29 & 30 all the way.
Zack Hemsey - The Way was perfect to listen to when she realises, she’s close to Sukuna and the war is starting. This remix with the sirens was perfect for me to visualise how she’s running over that battlefield, dodging the bombs, fighting her way through. It’s still such an epic scenery in my head which I hope I could convey!
Jayme Deville - Right on Time kinda gave me slow motion pictures in my head, for when Sukuna approaches her during battle.
Mira - Violently is such an incredible song for me. It describes her whole journey and emotions so so good. I listened to it when I wrote the kissing scene, but it grew to be a super important song for their whole relationship, that’s why I would choose it for a rolling credit song hehe.
Song 28 - 31 (The Shadows - Take Me Back To Eden)
Those were all the songs which inspired me for the Sex Scene when Sukuna returns from war in Chapter 32.
Honorable mention here:
Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden just IS the moment for me when y/n notices, that Sukuna stayed in her room and he opens his eyes to her.
The lyrics
My, my, those eyes like fire
I'm a winged insect, you're a funeral pyre
just describe the effect that Sukuna (and his gaze and eyes) have on y/n (and on me tbh) so perfectly, that I needed to add that to the rolling credit choice as well.
Song 32 - 33 (O Saki Saki - Lahu Munh Lag Gaya)
Heh! Chapter 33, the festival! I actually planned to have a dancing scene with y/n and other people from the festival, kinda Bollywood style, to impress our Lord and Saviour Sukuna! 😆
However, since that requires A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL of writing skill, I decided to leave it. The Songs still served me perfectly well to get in the mood for a cool ass festival atmosphere for a cool ass King!
Song 34 Clann - Her & the Sea
Chapter 35, when Sukuna and y/n talk on the bridge. Just that moment and atmosphere.
Song 35 - 36 (Timeout - You Thought)
Mood Songs for when y/n is gonna find out that Sukuna fucked around when he was in war. No particular moment here, but served me to get into her emotional state.
Song 37 - 41 (Ecstasy - Luscious)
Again mood songs for sex scenes after Sukuna’s confession in Chapter 36.
I think I listened to Ecstasy and All I Need by The MXXNLIGHT for the Throne Sex in Chapter 25 as well.
Song 42 Clann - She Loves The Rain
I think this one explains itself…Dancing in the rain with Sukuna in Chapter 44.
Song 43 - 44 (Fatal Attraction - Obsession)
Again mood songs for their overall relationship, that represent how knee deep y/n is in love with Sukuna.
Song 45 Mira - Thorns
Oh Mira, how I love her music. That song was published a few chapters before I was ready to write Akiko’s murder, but it described y/n’s reaction regarding Sukuna’s apathy so perfectly in Chapter 45. My heart ached so much when I listened to it the first time!
Fun fact here: The moment when Sukuna reveals that he was pushing the maids with motivation, was actually planned to be directly after Akiko’s death. I noticed in the early draft of that chapter, that it doesn’t work out and decided last minute to completely change that plan and to write that moment into the finale of the story.
Song 46 - 48 (Blood Code - Cold Blooded)
My soundtrack for y/n’s killing spree in Chapter 46 😆
Song 49 Zandros - Look What You’ve Done To Me
Mood Song for the aftermath of Sayako’s death and y/n’s feelings about coming a monster in Chapter 47
I think that‘s it. I hope you enjoy! <3

In the music taste post you said
“I think the only think they disagree on is probably metal and such that has harsh noises, cause Jimmy can't mimic it without hurting his throat and it's a bit too much for his ears. Tango isn't a big fan of musical tracks either probably.” Does that mean Jimmy is a musical enjoyer? If so what shows or kind of shows does he like (aside from Mamma Mia)?
(Also, I apologize about the ask on your other account, I got mixed up and meant to ask it on this page. Ill make sure to ask on only this page unless you would rather me ask on the other page)
I dunno about atually going to the theatre very much since he lived out in the middle of nowhere and doesn't have the attention span for it, but in all universes Jimmy loves singing and karaoke to me (even if not very good at it) so musicals are a given for birbs.
Probably a lot of more big popular movies like classic disney musicals, footloose and grease, hairsprat for sure, little shop of horrors, maybe moulin rouge and coyote ugly? Also I feel like at some point he watched the cats movie with his friends and they dragged him to see the "good real show" and he still didn't get it but he remembers some of the songs. I think the only musical he's seen of his own volition is pirates of penzance and I think he probably knows wicked only from a soundtrack recording.
He likes mostly silly happy sounding ones, so I don't think he would like sruff like les miserables, phantom of the opera, or the dolls of new albion (though I doubt he would know that last one, he's very much a more mainstream sorta guy) and doesn't know any musical adaptations of movies like legally blonde and such. He mighta heard one or two of them from Lizzie but probably not. I also doubt he's heard very many foreign musicals so not any bollywood musicals or film red.
I'm going to give him the chipmunk movies and cds, not because I think it's something he would like but because I think Jimmy Solidarity trying to sing chipmunk songs would possibly be THE most painful sound imaginable that would test even Tango's patience.
I think Tango probably knows a lot of phineas and ferb songs and thats probably their one common ground, though Tango would probably never in a million years be able to find the tracks for it to play for Jimmy. Musicals singing is probably something Jimmy does more with his siblings and Pearl, and doesn't force Tango to listen to too many unless theyre having a karaoke night. There probably are some musicals Tango would loke if he heard them but I don't think theyre ones that Jimmy knows or likes, and I doubt Tango is willing to take a shot with them when he knows he doesn't care for them usually.

Celebrating 15 years of Team Starkid with my (current) ranking of all of their shows and brief thoughts on them.
VHS Christmas Carol
I don't know how this became my favorite. The music is top tier, I've liked every version of it.
I was initially nervous to watch it because I wasn't sold on the original format, but it grew on me.
Also it's the second best adaptation of A Christmas Carol (the best is still the Muppet Christmas Carol)
2. A Very Potter Musical
My first ever Starkid show.
I watched it with my sister on our very old computer. I was in maybe 6th grade and had become quite obsessed with musicals and Harry Potter, so it perfectly combined my interests.
I truly was not totally sold on it just because 6th grade me was not prepared for all the cursing and the dirty jokes (6th grade me was a very different person) but Granger Danger fully hooked me
I still hold that Granger Danger is the best Starkid song, i do not care that it gets (over)played all the time. I also love that they keep having to come up with new ways to perform it (my favorite/the best being the LeakyCon one with Meredith directing the rest of the cast who only half-remember it)
Definitely ranks high just because it was the first and nostalgically I love it so much
3. Trail to Oregon
It's so fun as a concept and one of the few shows I like that really uses audience participation and makes it work.
Joey credited as "Everyone Else" and every shot with Clark in the background
I like the smaller cast, it's such a feat to run a show like that with 6 cast members
4. A Very Potter Sequel
it's ranked 4th but it probably actually ties with Trail to Oregon
I watched it after AVPM (so my second starkid show) and it did not disappoint
I do think it is stronger than AVMP for most of it
I quote Draco a lot
5. Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier
Definitely my favorite parody they've done. There's a great video that breaks down why it works so well: they've nailed the style.
Around the same time I first watched Twisted was also around my Wicked phase so that helped a lot.
Dylan Saunders knocks out it out of the park as Ja'far, he puts so much depth into the role. It works as an actor and for the part and helps a lot of the humor since Ja'far is the straight man of the show.
The entire soundtrack slaps including the bonus demos
6. Nerdy Prudes Must Die
The songs are great
The production value on their shows has gone up exponentially, and they make good use of it. The effects are so so good
I've never been more uncomfortable as when the words "dirty girl soup" were first said
7. Black Friday
probably tied with NPMD but
I think plot-wise it is better than NPMD, and overall so are the songs. I think maybe the live version that's on youtube is what makes it slightly below NPMD because everyone was sick so it sounds very different between the live and recorded.
the garland and lights becoming wiggly is peak set design
I think it has some of the most memorable songs
the return of Dylan Saunders and his lovely ballads
Take Me Back is a top tier love song for Starkid
8. Starship
Probably the 3rd Starkid show I saw
Joey Richter absolutely sells the performance (he's not carrying it because the whole cast is great) and is fantastic as the lead
puppets! so many puppets!
9. Holy Musical B@tman
my previous exposure to Batman at this point had been the 60s Adam West TV show so really this is like the spiritual successor of that, so honestly i was totally unfazed by the number of puns, I just assumed that was how Batman media was
Jeff Blim as Sweet Tooth is great, but I also love Joey Richter's in the Apocalyptour
"you got my hopes up so high, then mugged and shot them in an alleyway!" i quote an unreasonable amount
10. The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals
tbh I did not super like the show when I first watched it but it grew on me overtime. I think i really started to enjoy it when I went back to watch it after they announced Black Friday was going to be a sequel
11. A Very Potter Senior Year
it's so long guys
I think Joey Richter is the best part of it, Sidekick was fantastic
i do love that they got basically everyone they could to come back and do it
most of the callbacks work really well and make it fun
12. Ani: A Parody
fully gonna admit I haven't seen the full show itself, but I do really like the music
it is truly in the Star Wars spirit
13. Firebringer
I really wish I liked this show more, I think it's a fun concept and overall was fun
the opening number is really good musically
i think the humor and the unnecessary cursing didn't really work for me
14. Me and My Dick
I just think overall this show isn't to my taste but it's quite fun

What are songs that you would pair with some scenes from your fanfiction? (Any of your fics)
For the Katherine/Stefan/Elena "Toxic" Series, I start off the first part with some of the songs I listened to while writing:
i feel like i’m drowning - this especially is Stefan's theme
please
cravin’ -- like, you KNOW this is what Katherine in my fic is thinking to herself.
habits of my heart
i’m having sex too much blues
so that's kind of the soundtrack to the series. I put these lyrics at the start:
You keep dreaming and dark scheming Yeah, you do You’re a poison and I know that is the truth All my friends think you’re vicious And they say you’re suspicious You keep dreaming and dark scheming Yeah, you do
My life’s okay Yeah, just when you’re not around me My life’s okay Just when you’re not around me My life’s okay Just when you’re not around me
—   Two Feet, I Feel Like I’m Drowning
I was going to keep putting different song lyrics at the beginning of each part but no one asked about the music, haha.
For Stelena, I would make companion videos to fics, which would also include the kind of songs that would go with the fic.
So, for "Sacrifice" it would be "When The Party's Over"
youtube
for "The Problem Is..." it would be "Spare Change"
youtube
but tbh, I think this video is probably my magnum opus of stelena companion vids. It wasn't meant to be a companion vid but I think the song/lyrics of nitesky capture the essence of every single SE fic I write and what I try to express about their relationship especially from 2:04 on because the lyrics are:
"if you let my soul out, if you let my soul out, if you let my soul out ... it'll come right back to you."
youtube
For my Jonsa fics:
fools: "what if we ruin it all, and we love like fools? and all we have we lose? and I don't want you to go but I want you so, so tell me what we choose?" ... "i want you more than i've wanted anyone, isn't that dangerous?"
landfill: "'cause this is torturous electricity between both of us. and this is dangerous 'cause I want you so much, but I hate your guts, I hate you..."
and i did make a companion vid for them with "bloodsport"
For my Bonkai fics, there would be certain requests, like for "Taking Over The Night" a request was that I listen to and try to capture the essence of that song in the fic:
haunted/ghost
I also named a few fics after songs I was listening to while writing them like:
wicked games or take me to church (the fic was called "we were born sick")
For the Jax and Tara fic, honestly the first song that came to mind when I thought about it is:
paperweight

I saw you reblogged the random asks post. And since I know you like musicals, what are your top 3 and do you have a least favorite musical?
Yesss I love random asks, and I’m excited about this one bc I love musicals!!
My favorite of ALL TIME is wicked, and anyone who calls me a fake theater kid for that is the real fake theater kid bc they aren’t secure enough in their theater-kid-ness to like a popular musical. Yes, almost everyone knows it, but the reason I like it is because I am a SUCKER for villain backstories/tragic heroes/antagonist redemption etc. This is why I am obsessed with Anakin Skywalker’s story and also can’t stop writing Good Nathaniel Benedict fanfic? So Elphaba is just amazing to me because she has such a believable side of the story while also doing things we know are morally questionable, AND she sings the coolest songs about it. no good deed is quite possibly one of my favorite musical songs ever. All of wicked’s music sounds like epic movie soundtrack but with lyrics and I’m HERE FOR IT. You wouldn’t believe how much wicked fanfic I’ve read.
My second favorite is newsies!! My five year old foster brother is currently obsessed with it and can sing all the lyrics to most of the songs, which is the most adorable thing in the world. The newsies are all adorable, and in the movie version Jack is Christian Bale and in the proshot he’s Jeremy Jordan so like, main character is easy on the eyes either way lol. Also Katherine is so relatable. She sings about writer’s block, she sings my soul!! All the ensemble songs are so powerful and the L Y R I C S! I could do a whole other post on my favorite newsies lyrics. You go Feldman. It’s good stuff.
My third favorite is probably Next to Normal, because not only is the music fire, it’s amazing at the way it portrays how mental illness affects the people who surround you. Also, Aaron Tveit is in it, and his voice is hot (and also he is hot) so that is an automatic YES!
My least favorite is SpongeBob the musical. The music is bad and my perfect pitch can’t handle Texas Song.
Thank you for the ask :D hope you enjoyed my ramblings!

top three period dramas?
Not counting musicals, because it would be a rigged game then:
(1) I, Claudius. Yes, it's inaccurate. Yes, its portrayal of the women of the Julio-Claudian dynasty is undoubtedly sexist, not helped by the fact that Robert Graves was a massive sexist. Yes, it's based on something by Robert Graves, who, as a Celticist, I am professionally obliged to have a strong hatred for.
But it's also well done, the actors are all phenomenal, I quote things from it every day ("WHERE ARE MY EAGLES?" "Don't eat the figs, dear" "You may kiss me and go" "Uncle CLAAAAAAUDDDDDIIIUUUUSSSS" "IS THERE ANYONE IN ROME WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH MY DAUGGGHHHHHTAAAAHHHH"), and for something that was made with a limited budget, I think they actually do a good job of showing the intimate world of the dynasty in a way that a lot of more recent series (Rome) failed to do with bigger sets, and the scriptwriters deserve credit for dusting off Graves' incredibly dry prose and making an adaptation that's crackling with wit in just about every scene for all of its six episode run length.
(2) Pride and Prejudice (1995). Such a shame that there hasn't been one made since then, but I can't blame them, given this set such a high standard. As a child, me and my mom were up to 2 AM watching it because we had no idea how it was going to end and we kept going "just one more episode!" until we'd reached the end.
And sharing third place: The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) and Ladyhawke (1985) -- Both of them were formative for me. The Man in the Iron Mask is very much putting multiple experienced actors together and letting them ham it up alongside Leonardo DiCaprio alongside gorgeous sets and costumes with a great score by Nick Glennie-Smith. It has next to no accuracy to the OG novel, it's wildly historically inaccurate, but my god it's *fun*. Ladyhawke, meanwhile, is probably one of my favorite depictions of the Middle Ages, specifically because it doesn't go into either the extreme of the Dung Ages or the extreme of, say, the 1950s where everyone is looking absolutely pristine. I think it's a nice compromise between the two of them. The plot itself, of two lovers forced to change shape, always together, never apart, by the machinations of a wicked bishop, reads like something from a medieval romance, even though I know, logically, that it isn't, just because it really does capture the *feeling* of the era. (And I will not hear a bad word against the soundtrack.)
Bonus round: Brennus, Enemy of Rome. This film is not good, but it IS the only film adaptation of Brennus' Invasion of Rome to date and...believe me, it being good would ruin the fun of it. ("KILL THE ROMANSSSSS ARRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH" Best introduction to an antagonist ever.)

‘Highlander’ Remake Will Use Queen Songs From the Original Movie, Director Chad Stahelski Says
It’s a kind of magic
Tumblr media
Lionsgate
«I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan». Christopher Lambert and Beatie Edney.
Drew Taylor October 31, 2023 @ 2:10 PM
One of the more iconic elements of “Highlander,” the high-concept fantasy adventure from 1986 that went on to spawn a long-running franchise, is the movie’s songs, written and performed by Queen. And Chad Stahelski, who will be directing the remake for Lionsgate, says that those songs will return for the new movie.
“Yes,” Stahelski told TheWrap while talking about the Oscar chances for “John Wick: Chapter 4.” “Probably in a different way than you think, but hardcore yes.”
Queen wrote and recorded songs for the original “Highlander” and released an album, “A Kind of Magic,” in 1986 that served as an official soundtrack to the movie. (Only one song, a Queen recording of “Theme from New York, New York,” didn’t make the cut and has never been officially released)
The songs were perfect for the movie, which depicted a battle between immortal beings known as Highlanders in modern day Manhattan. Instead of Scottish moors, they battle in underground parking garages. That kind of thing. Queen’s songs were wedged in among Michael Kamen’s original score and became part of the tapestry, mixing ancient mythology and high camp, ingeniously designed by Australian filmmaker Russell Mulcahy.
While the movie failed to make money, it was popular enough to justify a bonkers sequel from Mulcahy (1991’s genuinely unhinged “Highlander II: The Quickening”), a long-running syndicated television series and several more sequels of varying quality.
“We’re trying to encapsulate everything you loved about the original with more – meaning we want to ground it, we want it to be a great chance at world-building and mythology. But we still want to keep it fun,” Stahelski said. “It’s like the ‘Wick’ movies. You want to experience this world, you want to believe it’s real. But it’s also five degrees off from reality. This is a movie with immortals running around chopping each others’ heads off. There’s a certain ridiculousness to it. It’s like the ‘Wick’s. We ride the tone. Everybody in the movie thinks its real. But we as an audience can get our heads around it – look, suspend disbelief. We’re trying to get you on board for this amazing journey with people who have lived hundreds of years. It’s a challenge. But I’m very excited.”
Recent reports have suggested that the movie will shoot next year, with Henry Cavill in the role made famous (immortalized, some might say) by a then-largely unknown Christopher Lambert. Who wants to live forever?

THE WRAP
There can be only one - Highlander
The soundtrack should be predominantly Queen songs as they were in the original film, bringing the original lineup of Queen and the original film into this new reimagined version.🎶🎸

TONIGHT YOU ARE MINE: THE PLAYLIST + COMMENTARY
note i spent so much time on this au i thought its soundtrack deserved its own post, and then i realised i wanted to add notes on why i chose each song. i don't think anyone really cares, but this was fun to do so i thought i'd put it here, too.
Tumblr media
me, myself & i, 5 seconds of summer
this was a song which i thought really fit the reader's internal struggle throughout this fic, with refusing to accept help and that ultimately being the cause of the breakup.
silver springs - 2004 remaster, fleetwood mac
the document i wrote this fic in was originally titled time may have cast a spell on you (but you won't forget me) for the line in this song. i really liked the idea of this being from jason's point of view during the breakup. the whole 'i know I could have loved you/but you would not let me' felt very fitting for the both of them.
ain't no rest for the wicked, cage the elephant
this song was suggested by fall nonnie when we were first discussing songs that the band might perform, and i loved it so much.
tonight you are mine, the technicolors
another song i think the band would perform, that jason and reader would spend making eyes at each other – probably long before they actually get together.
midnight rain, taylor swift
do i have to explain? i will anyway. just, the idea of chasing success and inadvertently hurting the one that loves you. i think midnight rain is a lot sadder, and obviously a story in its own right that doesn't perfectly fit this fic, but that specific aspect really spoke to me. they get their happy ending in this one.
mess it up, gracie abrams
i think gracie abrams is a queen at writing songs for girls (gn) who do it to themselves, and that was perfect for this fic. 'i keep thinking maybe if you let me back in/we can make it better breaking every habit' is very reader and jason in this fic.
grace, florence + the machine
grace is very much an apology for the platonic aspect of jason + reader's relationship. when they broke up, it wasn't just jason as a boyfriend that they lost, but also their best friend. grace was written to florence welch's younger sister, and it makes me ache so much thinking about this line, 'and you, you were the one i treated the worst/only because you loved me the most'
cassandra, florence + the machine
cassandra. where do i even start? 'they cut out my eyes and sent me home packing/to pace around the kitchen for scraps of inspiration'. the idea of losing your sense of self, the ability to write which you've always had, and then it slipping away from you with one single breath. this was for the reader.
everywhere, everything, noah kahan
another song suggestion from when we were discussing this au. the kind of love jason has for this reader.
why am i like this? orla gartland
another self pitying song for the ones who make mistakes and beat themselves up for it. why am i like this?
october passed me by, girl in red
a sad sort of love song for the sad lovers of this story
doomsday, lizzy mcalpine
a bit angry, jason's perspective during the breakup of not being allowed to make that decision with the reader. of being pushed away, and the underscoring of how much devotion there was before it all fell to pieces. i think he's allowed to be angry, i would be too.
too young, louis tomlinson
this au would not be the au it is without a louis tomlinson song. i think this is from reader's perspective, an apology to jason, for giving in and giving up. i also love louis tomlinson and this song so much. i think that, if the timeline of the breakup had been longer, always you also would have made it onto this playlist. i think it's an honorary song, anyway.
meddle about, chase atlantic
sexy song for jason and reader to make eyes at each other on stage to. but also i listened to this while writing the smut scene so.

So... I recently played a lot of a certain game and I feel so emotionally invested that I really have to mention it.
I rarely get the urge to rant nowadays (as one might have noticed) but this just really hit home when I didn't expect it to.
I'm talking about Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane.
YES, it is an Ace Attorney clone. And YES it does have striking similarities but it's story and characters function in a MUCH different way than Ace Attorney does.
Its setting is probably the most different. It involves magic and yes while it does seem weird to put magic in a game that involves a lot of logic, trust me, it makes sense.
You're placed in a world where aristocracy/monarchy rules the kingdom of Wyverngarde. The playable character is Tyrion Cuthbert who is a very young defense attorney who takes up a murder trial as his first case. The defendant is a young girl and the victim a part of her family. Sound familiar? TRUST ME the story gets MUCH MORE wicked later on.
You're facing leaders of noble houses and trying to correct the injustice that this faulty system has. Nobles always kind of get away with crimes by pulling some strings whereas the common folk have to pay for those crimes.
The involvement of magic is pretty simple. Magic leaves traces at crime scenes which lets you assume which spells were used. Each spell has certain physical laws that they work under such as gestures, incantations, durations, and other restrictions. Each person has a spell compendium that tells you what kinds of spells they know.
It really isn't that complex, but the story does have everything you can ask for. Dramatical twists, confrontations, character development, supernatural creatures and beings, evil masterminds, and MY favorite... ACTUALLY GOOD ROMANTIC SUBPLOT.
It's a fantastic game with a playtime of roughly 30 hours and I was really excited that insaneintherainmusic was involved in making the soundtrack for this game.
If you don't know them, they're the ones responsible for a lot of good Pokemon remixes. It's worth checking out for sure!

Prank War
Age Rating: 12+
Chapters: Three of Three
Fandom: Grey’s Anatomy
AN: Hey guys just to let you know I’ll post another story throughout Easter weekend that will feature Amber and Andrew’s relationship, stay tuned!
Summary: Amber, DeLuca and Jackson pull a final prank on Roy with Alex, Amelia and Koracick as an audience.
Words: 3385
“Bullshit!” I exclaim to Koracick as I check Kimmie’s vitals while she lays in bed with her grandma in the chair, “Excuse my language Peg but it’s the only way I can fully express how uncultured Dr. Koracick is when it comes to Broadway musicals.” We’ve spent the past 20 minutes debating what is the best musical of all time. I’m standing by Wicked, Kimmie’s is of course Cabaret and Koracick for some strange reason is Phantom of the Opera. Don’t get me wrong I like the soundtrack it’s just the plot could be better and the female lead could not subserviate to Stockholm Syndrome.
“Agreed.” Kimmie and I bump fists, “Cabaret, Hamilton and Wicked are timeless Phantom of the Opera went out with the female empowerment movement.”
Koracick scoffs and grins amused, “I’m just calling it the way I see it and the sooner you face the truth-”
“Your full of crap and you know it!” Kimmie tells him.
“Hamilton only made your top three because it’s new and shiny.”
“And you only left it off your list because your bitter that you couldn’t score tickets for the original cast.” I nod at Kimmie’s defense and see Alex and Amelia entering and looking at us puzzled by the scene, “It goes Cabaret, Hamilton, Rent.”
I scoff amused, “Sorry Kimmie but no it goes Wicked, Chicago and Les Mis. All three spectacular musicals with killer songs and killer female leads.”
“Yeah, I saw Chicago back in 97 I know how killer those women are.” I roll my eyes at Koracick’s joke, “And back to the topic, no Sondheim?” I groan at forgetting about the man who reinvented American musicals, “Stephen Sondheim?”
“Damn it Sondheim.” Kimmie says dumbstruck as well.
“Yeah, can’t count him out. Count of three. Best Sondheim. One two three.”
“Sweeney Todd.” I look at Koracick shocked we both said the same thing causing him to chuckle in delight while Kimmie’s was Into The Woods.
“Gross.” Kimmie responds to our choice.
“No he wielded a hell of a scalpel.” And I nod giving the guy props for his Sondheim favorite. Alex and Amelia stand there frozen still puzzled by our debate and honestly, I don’t blame them.
When Koracick came in a while ago wanting to meet Kimmie I opposed it due to his abhorrent personality and crappy bedside manner. I tried to subtly send him away but when he mentioned seeing Rent when it first came out on Broadway Kimmie insisted he stay and recount every moment of it. Somehow, I joined it telling her all the musicals I saw back in New York citing Wicked as my favorite which caused our debate that got heated but in a good way because it made Kimmie smile. Her grandma sees it too and is thankful for Koracick which is probably a first for him.
“They’ve been at this for 20 minutes straight.” Peg explains to them, “Happiest I’ve seen her in days.”
I focus back on Koracick who is deadset on Sweeney Todd, “Into The Woods, a quarter of the Broadway audience left that show at intermission.”
“I hate to agree with him at all Kimmie but he’s got a point.” I reluctantly admit.
“They left because they want an easy happy ending.” Kimmie counters, “But hello that’s why it’s brilliant.”
I look up slightly convinced and turn to Koracick, “Sorry but I gotta go with her logic.”
Koracick scoffs and looks to Amelia and Alex for support, “Doctors. Second opinion. Weigh in.” Amelia and Alex are left stumped for an answer when I see Jackson entering the room with a grin along with DeLuca who snickers ready for our prank.
I gasp excited, “Is he here?”
“I just paged him he’ll be here in one minute, you got it ready?” Jackson asks hopeful and I chuckle pulling a bottle of Minute Maid apple juice from behind Kimmie’s pillow.
Andrew smiles mischievously, “We’re really doing this?”
I shake the bottle, “Absolutely if you want to back out now you can.” DeLuca pulls a specimen container out of his pocket which is answer enough. Alex and Amelia look at us confused.
“What is going on?” Alex asks.
“Do not judge us.” I defend us as Andrew throws me the cup I catch and fill with the juice, “She wants us to do this and I am not gonna deny my patient her request are you?”
Peg looks at us disappointed, “Kimmie we talked about this, now I don’t know who this doctor is but he does not deserve this.”
“He called your granddaughter a dying brat.” I tell her and she looks at me surprised, “Right here and right in front of her I was there.”
Peg takes a moment before responding, “Just make sure it’s actually juice and he doesn’t drink your pee you’ll swap for him.” Kimmie nods happily and I top the cup sealing it and place it front of Kimmie.
“Wow.” Koracick says impressively, “Pretty and punks her coworkers do you have plans later?” I narrow my eyes at him hitting on me.
“Brother in the room.” Alex reminds him threateningly.
“And boyfriend.” Andrew chips in.
“And gross.” I finish and Koracick gives me an amused hurt look. Roy enters the room and I quickly put the juice bottle behind Kimmie’s pillow. We all keep a straight face as Jackson faces him.
“Dr. Roy so glad you could be here.”
“And why is that sir?” Roy asks, annoyed.
“Well, I need you to run Kimmie Park’s labs for me and rush the results.”
Roy scoffs, “You want me to run a little girls labs who’s not even your patient.”
“Do you have a problem with my assignment?” Jackson asks with authority and Roy backs down and turns to Kimmie ready to take her cup.
“Wait a minute.” Roy stops by her bed and watches her pick up the specimen cup and observe it carefully, “I think I should filter it again; it looks a little dark.” Kimmie unscrews the cap and takes a sip making it look like she’s drinking her own pee to Roy who looks on in disgusted shock as I keep my face passive. The people around us look on amused and trying not to laugh out loud, “Much better, what do you think Dr. Amber?”
“Hmm.” I pick up the cup and observe it like a doctor, “You know I’m a doctor and I’ve done this before so…” I sip the juice that tastes sweet as Roy takes a step back looking at me disturbed while I click my tongue. Alex covers his mouth to hide his smirk and stifles his laugh, “Dr. Avery can you check? I mean you’re an attending and I’m an intern so I should learn how to do this properly.”
“Yeah of course.” Avery walks next to me calmly and grabs the cup sipping it until it’s empty and exhales in delight, “Oh I’m sorry I just get carried away I can’t get enough of this stuff, don’t you agree Dr. Roy?”
I look at Roy who gawks in shock at the disgusting and shocking act we committed, “Y-Y-You all are sick, sick I tell you!” He runs out of the room in fear slipping as he runs. I and everyone else burst out laughing. I hold Avery’s shoulder to steady myself because my stomach is cramping from how hard I’m laughing.
I take a deep breath and steady myself facing Avery like he’s a god, “Oh my god, you are an evil genius, emphasis on evil!”
“Why thank you.” Avery smiles proudly, “You may bow to the master.”
I chuckle and slightly bow, “Bowing!” I get back up and turn to Kimmie who is laughing, “Do you think he’s learned his lesson?”
“If he hasn’t we’ll just come back swinging harder.” Kimmie calms down and looks at Avery, “You know I’ve seen My Sister’s Keeper like a dozen times and I’m guessing you have too that’s where you got the drinking my pee prank from.”
“What? I didn’t get it from that.” Kimmie chuckles and raises an eyebrow and I do too knowing he’s lying causing him to break, “Fine I saw it, there was a time I had a huge crush on Cameron Diaz.”
“We all did.” I tell him causing Amelia, Alex, DeLuca and Koracick to nod in agreement.
“What does it matter where I got the prank from? I mean we probably sent him to psych.” Jackson laughs at that and I chuckle as well.
“Okay fine I will give you that but I am the prank master mine was original.”
Kimmie scoffs, “Please paging him all over the hospital was my idea, I’m the king of pranks.”
DeLuca nods amused, “Yeah I got Mike Rotch from google so I’m as unoriginal as Avery.” Alex and Amelia look at him confused over Mike Rotch but he looks at us with a grin, “She’s the undisputed king guys.”
I chuckle, “Okay fine I’m bowing to the king.” I give a slight bow to Kimmie who smiles and does a power pose causing everyone to clap and cheer her on as the King of Pranks.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later that night me and DeLuca stood at the edge of the lab table watching in anxiety at the tumor model inside the beaker. Koracick and Shepherd had a brainstorm earlier and figured out that using multiple beams instead of just one would allow us to control the heat generated and increases the possibility of the tumor breaking down. Now instead of one we’re using three beams on the tumor waiting for a miracle.
“God this is so stressful.” I admit anxiously waiting for the tumor to burn.
Alex walks in, “What’s going on?”
I look at him annoyed at his bad timing, “Shh!”
Koracick puts a finger up silencing Alex, “Shh, pipe down. You’ll scare the tumor.” I hand Alex goggles that he puts on just as the tumor starts to have burn spots and this time the beaker is holding.
“Yes!” Amelia shouts out happy and I pump my fist in the air joyful. The others are excited as well.
“This is amazing.” I smile at our luck finally turning.
“I am right?” Koracick boasts and I roll my eyes.
“If you’re looking for an intern ego boost your barking up the wrong tree.” I inform him and we continue to observe the miracle for a few seconds until the beaker cracks causing us to groan, “For ten seconds I was happy, that’s a new record.”
“Well, it’s a start.” Koracick consoles us and I nod in agreement.
“That’s the longest a beaker’s ever lasted.” Alex points out happily.
“Glad your on-board Adam.” I glare at Koracick not remembering Alex’s name as well as him.
“It’s Alex.” He corrects with a frown.
“Yeah, either way.” Koracick says dismissively. I walk away from him annoyed and dispose of the beaker for once happy I am throwing it away.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I exhale in exhaustion as I take my backpack out of my locker getting ready to leave. It was a fun day overall with me finally getting back at Roy for every snide insult he’s thrown at me, DeLuca and Jackson. Add to our breakthrough on the project I’d say I had a perfect day. Kimmie’s grandmother thanked me for hanging out with Kimmie all day and making her laugh. She said today was the happiest she’s seen her since she started chemo which made me feel good. And I’m gonna end the day going home with DeLuca so I guess it’s ending with a bang so to speak.
As I sling my backpack over my shoulder, I see Alex coming in still sporting the black eye I gave him this morning. Okay, aside from accidentally punching him my day as perfect. He’s still in his scrubs which tells me he’s gonna pull another all nighter.
“Hey, are you headed home?” Alex asks.
I nod, “Yeah I would stay and get more beams but unlike you I need sleep and a night with my boyfriend even Tom Koracick would find too graphic for his tastes.”
Alex grimaces in disgust, “I don’t need the details.”
“Sorry.” I chuckle lightly, “I already hit you in the head I don’t need to mess with what’s inside it.”
Alex chuckles feeling his eye, “Yeah I’d say I have something to lord over you for the next month or until I accidentally knock you out next time, we’re in the ring.”
I shake my head at that suggestion, “How about next time I just buy you a beer and we catch up like normal siblings?”
“That works too.” Alex agrees full-heartedly, “I wanted to come by and say thanks for helping out with Kimmie today. She really needed something to do and it was…unusual but I think it was good for her to laugh even at other people’s expenses.”
“Well it’s okay as long as it’s people who deserve to be taken down a peg.” I tell him, “Like Roy or Dr. Douche as I call him in my head. And if you think I was too hard on that last one I should tell you Qadri told me he said he would let me go down on him in the pit if I asked.”
Alex looks at me in disgusted shock no doubt seeing I went easy on Roy instead, “Wow that statement alone was not respectful to him, you or how Hunt runs the pit.”
“Yeah, respect and Roy are two very separate concepts that haven’t mingled. It was fun and not just because Roy looked like a little bitch today. Kimmie is fun to hang out with, I mean if this is who she is after chemo I can’t imagine how great she is completely healthy and full of life.”
Alex grins understandingly, “I know what you mean, she’s special…you know who she reminds me of right?”
I narrow my eyes confused, “Who does she remind you of?”
“She reminds me of you.” That statement catches me off guard and Alex grins at my expression, “I didn’t really see it before but now that I look at it, she’s just like you were at that age. Even when you were six you were by far the coolest person I’ve ever met.”
I chuckle baffled, “I was not, no six-year-old is cool.”
“You were. You were already tougher than the kids your age and you were way tougher than me and Aaron combined.” I look at him touched by his admiration toward me at an age when I admired him. He chuckles nostalgically, “Also you sang all the time, and not the standard Disney or Winnie the Pooh crap you sang AC/DC and Whitney Houston and somehow you did it flawlessly it was like getting a live concert. You and Kimmie should sing a duet when you get the chance and you’ll see what I mean.”
“Well she does it better than me.” I admit honestly, “She hits notes I could only dream of.”
Alex grins, “And another thing you two have in common, your survivors. Kimmie’s parents walked out on her and she wasn’t as worse off as us but it was still horrible.” My heart aches for Kimmie and what she had to go through in her 12 years of life, “Despite all that she survived it and she’s still singing her lungs out even after the hell she went through. I know it’s something you would do in her situation and that alone makes you and her the strongest people I know.”
I stand there moved by his speech so much so I walk to him and hug him. He’s shocked and unresponsive at the first few seconds but hugs me back. I pull back and speak as well, “You know I’m only strong because you and Aaron made me that way. Growing up with two idiot brothers also makes you smarter than them too.”
Alex chuckles at my backhanded compliment, “Well one of us had to be born with brain, right?”
I grin amused, “I should go I have an early shift tomorrow and a lot of beams to steal to save Kimmie.”
“Don’t let me keep you sis, good night.”
“Good night bro.” I walk out of the locker room feeling all warm and fuzzy inside after that display of family love. I grin at Andrew who grins back and we walk out of the building hand in hand.
“So is there a reason why you decided to help me make a fool out of Roy?” I ask him as we get to the parking lot.
“What makes you think I would object to it?”
“Because you’re usually the one who tries to talk me out of reckless decisions.” I remind him, “What did Roy do to you to make you come out of your sensible sweet guy shell today?”
He sighs and stops in front of me, we stand face to face, “He might have said some things about you I overheard that were less than savory.”
I bite the inside of my cheek to keep my anger in check, “Like what?”
“I really don’t want to repeat it.” He insists but I counter.
“It’s better than actually saying it first.”
He takes a moment before speaking, “There was mention of the possibility of you going insane like your mom and brother and that event happening in bed…with me.”
I groan in disgust, “Tomorrow we’re filling his water bottle with cement, I don’t care if it kills him.”
Andrew grins slightly and kisses the top of my head in comfort, “Come on don’t let him get to you, you’re better than him and he knows it. Why do you think he degrades you so much? It’s the only thing he can do against you and it’s making him look worse and makes you look better.”
I look at him touched and continue walking this time leaning against him with my arm around his waist, “I think I liked it better when you supported me punking people who deserved it.”
Andrew chuckles as we get closer to my car, “Well I can’t keep pranking interns with you but I have something that might make up for it.”
“Really?” I grin, “And what might that be?”
“Well, you remember that bet we made a week ago and the conditions were if you lost I would plan how we celebrate your half birthday?”
I take my keys out of my backpack as we get closer to my car, “Yeah.”
“I was thinking about getting us an Airbnb up in Olympic National Park and we can spend the weekend of your half birthday exploring the little towns and doing actual couple things up there.”
I look at him surprised, “A road trip? I was expecting some takeout at the Dough Zone and maybe half a cake after.”
He narrows his eyes inquisitively, “Are you disappointed?”
I think about his idea and it’s starting to sink in a little causing me to grin at him, “No not really. I haven’t explored outside Seattle since I moved here and a weekend alone in a cabin in the woods with my boyfriend seems appealing to me somehow.” Andrew grins at me and I grin back, “And I’m speaking as someone who’s seen The Strangers and Hush multiple times.” He narrows his eyes confused and I glare at him disappointed, “Tell me you’ve seen at least one movie where a couple go to the woods alone only to be brutally murdered?”
Andrew chuckles, “I’m sure I will during the trip so I don’t get scared and cancel this trip and the guesthouse I rented. So I guess that’s a yes to the trip then?”
“Yes, on one condition.” I unlock my car and get in my driver seat while he gets in the passenger side, “If we see a group of people in creepy masks outside the rental we drive back as fast as we can.”
He looks at me strangely, “I would be concerned if we didn’t do that.”
“Great then it’s a date, but I get to choose the rental.” Andrew grins and nods. I start the engine driving out of the parking lot excited for this trip.

Movie Tag Game
Tagged in by @owlrageousjones! List seven favorite films, and then seven mutuals. (I'm going to whiff on the latter; sans the spouse, I don't have many movie buffs in my orbit.)
Favorite Movies
1. The Godfather (1972, dir. Francis Ford Coppola); 2. Batman Begins (2005, dir. Christopher Nolan); 3. The Dark Knight (2008, dir. Christopher Nolan); 4. Die Hard (1998, dir. John McTiernan).
There's a reason these four are grouped together! There was a time when my spouse struggled with falling asleep; and so we employed the above films as a soothing soundtrack, against which they could peacefully nod off.
(At least, as soothing as one might expect from a chorus of Chicago typewriters, eagerly punctuating Sonny Corleone; or John McClane, yelling intensely as he improvisationally repels down the side of Nakatomi Plaza.)
5. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997, dir. George Armitage).
An unusual blend of dark comedy, romance, and the occasional action set-piece; all set to a Gen X soundtrack. The premise sounds like high-concept word salad ("An ailing assassin in the midst of a midlife crisis rekindles an old relationship and battles fellow death-dealing competitors while attending his high school reunion"); and yet it somehow just works in the hands of the superbly capable cast.
(As a personal aside: there is a scene in which the protagonist finds himself staring into the wide eyes of a newborn infant, as Queen and David Bowie's Under Pressure swells in the background. I found this moment particularly touching; not least of which because it spurred me to the realization that I wanted to become a parent.)
6. John Wick (2014, dir. Chad Stahelski).
A fantastic example of a modestly-budgeted action film succeeding wildly on the strength of its compelling premise, intriguing world-building, and marriage of breathtaking choreography and stylish cinematography.
(Honorable mentions: Drive (1997); Dredd (2012); and The Raid: Redemption (2011) and it's follow-up, The Raid 2: Berandal (2014).)
7. Transformers: The Movie (1986, dir. Nelson Shin).
My god; there is so much I can (and will!) say about this movie.
For starters: it is not, conventionally-speaking, good.
Toy manufacturer Hasbro demanded that the dramatis personae of the first two seasons of the Transformers cartoon be written off; to make room for a new cast (and by extension, new toys). The producers gleefully complied by slaying beloved characters in an orgy of robot-on-robot violence that traumatized a generation of movie-going children.
(I should know; I was one of them!)
The narrative is nonsensical; and bounces frantically from one hair metal-accompanied set piece to the next without pause - until our protagonist (who has grown in literal height, if not as a person) unleashes the power of a previously undocumented McGuffin to save the day.
(In this respect, I harbor the belief that the producers cribbed significantly from 1981's Heavy Metal; which, respectfully, should probably not be the first choice of inspiration for a children's movie.)
Despite these deficiencies, however: it is a very, very watchable film!
The characters are likeable; the dialog, eminently quotable; and the voice cast perform their utmost.* The animation is spectacularly frenetic; and the soundtrack is surprisingly catchy (featuring the work of Stan Bush and Vince DiCola - notable for their contributions to Bloodsport and Rocky IV, respectively; and even "Weird Al" Yankovic)!
More than anything: this is a movie that trades in Rule Of Cool™ with childlike glee:
"What if we had a fully-operational battlestation; but instead of blowing planets up with a laser, it ate them?"
"...The two of them are out of ammo, and there's hundreds of enemies. So they hold a destruction derby - only it's underwater, right?"
"So the barbarian trash robots turn into motorcycles, and take turns riding each other, and they chase the good guys and then the good guy leader is exploded but it's okay, because the other good guys use the power of nonsense words to convince the trash robots to make him better; and then they have a dance-off..."
You won't learn anything from watching Transformers: The Movie; but it's fun, and strange, and surprisingly creative (while still operating within the unexplained requirement that everything and everyone turn into a robot, sooner or later)!
* There is a persistent rumor that Orson Welles was displeased to have starred in what was effectively a glorified toy commercial; exacerbated by both his self-professed lack of understanding of the movie's premise and plot, and his passing just five days after completing recording. This was not the case, however; as his grandchildren were fans, and he was enthused to have contributed to a franchise they loved.

My husband and I love going to the theatre together. I have a degree in theatre, and in uni we went to a lot of shows for my classes. This is how we got together lol. Anyway, his parents got us the season package for the touring Broadway Across Canada shows at the big theatre in the city. This season's been really good! We just saw the Frozen musical last night. It was so cute, and it fills in a lot of gaps the movie had. They had some really clever and cool effects for the snow and ice. I did a lot of theatre tech in uni and ... Like wow it's cool to see what you can do on stage with a huuuge budget. Also just seeing that yeah there's little tricks EVERYONE uses, even big Broadway shows.
One of the coolest effects was how they change Elsa's dress mid-song. It happens really fast, and it's kind of hard to tell exactly what's going on there. The top dress is tear-away, and they use two carefully placed trap doors. Found a video on YouTube
youtube
It's neat. Cool combo of costume design and stage effects really having to work together. Also the dress is really sparkly and the lights catch the sparkles and make it really dazzling. Just in general a cool costume. Elsa wears it for like two songs and then spends the rest of Act 2 in pants though lol. I'm guessing the super sparkly dress is delicate and not easy to move in. And perhaps the pants are to make a statement?
Okay and then there's the reindeer. It's amazing. Honestly when it first appears it's hilarious. What.
youtube
We were wondering why the program listed two different actors sharing the part of the reindeer on alternating days. None of the other main cast other than the children had that. But clearly it's because the dudes are putting the work in! What a physical role. To be in that position for like 2 hours? Owww!
There were many little girls in the audience dressed as Elsa that were probably seeing their first show. Maybe some of them will love theatre!
Anyway. We get to see SIX is our next show, and I'm sooooo pumped for that one. Love love love the soundtrack. So far of all the big Broadway shows I've been able to see (touring, I've never been to NYC, though I did get to see Wicked in the West End), I think Hadestown is my favourite. Anastasia may have been the weakest. Frozen is definitely a really fun spectacle musical, even if it doesn't make my list of "best" shows.

1, 5, 15 for musical asks!
Thank you so much for asking!!!
1. What is your current favourite musical, and is it different from what it was at the end of last year?
Ahhhh it's so hard to pick :D I think objectively (how insane the themes make me and have made me for a long time) it's probably TdV, but right now (3:28 am on December 28th) it's LOTR because I've been listening to it on loop for like 2 weeks ajsjfjhk. Like it's kinda flawed but I love the music so much and it's giving me major nostalgic feels. Last December I think it was Elisabeth (or maybe TdV tbh, that one's hard to displace) but I think Elisabeth is maybe my 3rd favourite now so there's not a huge change :D
5. Did you see any live musicals this year? What did you think of them?
Yess, I saw a whole bunch of them!! Highlights include Rebecca (Vienna), Cabaret (Finland), Evita (Germany), Wicked (London) & Les Mis (London). I really liked Cabaret and Evita (both were staged in innovative ways), had fun and appreciated the casts at Wicked and Rebecca (both were staged in uninnovative ways XD) (ahdhgjgj half joking), but Les Mis kinda sucked (I couldn't see anything because I had a cheap balcony seat and a guy with a big head sat in front of me) ajdjgj. But the cast there was amazing so it's not like it was a complete waste!!!
In total I must've seen like 20+ pieces of live theatre ahsjjf, but some of it I can't reveal here because I'm not open online about where I'm living in Germany. I'm really hyped to be living there, though, because good and speedy train connections are making next year seem very very promising!!!
15. Infodump to me about a musical!
Oooh idk which one... :D Maybe something I haven't talked about on this blog a lot before but I really enjoy: The Lord of the Rings (2006/2007/2023)!!
I first listened to this one in like 2017, because I liked the books/movies and discovered that it existed. Mostly I played Lothlorien on loop because it's an amazing song and there's an actual proshot video of it on youtube and Laura Michelle Kelly as Galadriel is really sparkly and pretty. Then I listened to the rest of the album and the music is just great all over!!! It's done by AR Rahman (composer, multi-instrumentalist, winner of a million awards for film soundtracks mostly in Indian cinema), Värttinä (Finnish folk band - most famously creators of Ievan polkka) and Christopher Nightingale (don't know much about him ahdhf). The Finnish folk influence is especially audible in the songs of the elves, they have real ancient cattle call vibes sometimes (in a good way xD). But my favourite songs are actually the more story-based and cinematic ones that I'm drawn to attribute to Rahman, as well as the soaring instrumental sections. So I would rank my fave songs (yes, all of them are favourites):
Lothlórien
The Road Goes On
Now and For Always
Wonder
The Cat and the Moon
Star of Earendil
The Final Battle
The Song of Hope
That's most of the main songs actually ahdhfgjgk.
The show is flawed, like I mentioned before; for someone who doesn't know the story from the LOTR books or movies it would get confusing pretty quickly, and because of the size of the cast it's hard to get insight into many of them in such a limited timespan (Boromir and the elves other than Arwen and Galadriel fall especially flat). But I love the music soooo much and I'm so excited that it was produced again in 2023, and in such a cozy and compact way too (it was done in a 200-seat theatre with an actor-musician cast as a semi-immersive production). The London cast recording is on Spotify, everyone should listen to it!
