Just finished Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere and I gotta say, I really enjoyed it. I went down the UPEO/Neucom missions route and took down Ouroboros, severely hampered Neucom and General Resource, and killed the guy in charge of UPEO twice. The graphics are great for the ps1 and I like the plane designs, they're [mostly] grounded yet slightly futuristic, my favorites are the Su-43 Berkut and the R-211 Orcinus.

I wasn't originally planning on writing any of this, but I've read so many wonderful and deeply personal love letters to FFVIII yesterday and today for its 25th anniversary that it kind of emboldened me to.
So here goes I guess, kind of somewhat personal wall of text about a ps1 game, under the cut. You've been warned!
Okay now I don't know how to start. You could say FFVIII came into my life at exactly the right time for me to absolutely imprint on it.
I remember playing the demo that came with a bunch of other demos from a PSN magazine; I'd watched my older brother play a lot of FFVII beforehand and I was enchanted by the story, graphics and characters, the music... Even though my understanding of english at the time was next to mediocre so I relied on him to explain things a lot. I was like... 8 or 9 then so loads of subjects and plot points went completely over my head but it didn't matter at all to me (It was kind of hilarious when I replayed it when I was older because I was like damn, this story is a LOT more convoluted/complicated than I remember wth??? Lmao)
When VIII finally released and I watched my brother play, I was now 10/11 and sometimes he'd play without me so I missed a lot of stuff (and it's rather funny because I remember looking at Squall and co at first and being like whoa, those adults have got their shit together so much and wow how I ever could have looked at Squall and thought that, is beyond me lmao) but when he was done with it I picked it up and played. And sucked. But it stayed with me through my teenage years, never too far.
I was then a lot more fluent in english and literature in general so it pretty much was my first real big 'story-driven' video game ever. I was so damn invested, and, perhaps most of all, I saw myself in Squall so damn much it was borderline uncanny. I think it's so comforting (or alarming depending on how you want to look at it lol) that that seems to be a common thing for all of us die-hard fans. We just 'get it', don't we?
I've... always been a 'weird' kid. That kid other kids somehow know to stay away from, because something is 'off' with them, before they learn how to mock and bully. And I was aware of my 'otherness' as much as them, for as long as I can remember. I never quite fit in, anywhere, no matter how hard I tried. I didn't have a lot of friends, and the very few I had I always kept at arms' length for self-preservation reasons. If I was never vulnerable, if they knew nothing deeper than surface-level stuff about me, they could never hurt me. And this way I wouldn't get too attached, so when they left it wouldn't hurt. Sound familiar?
Admittedly it's safe to assume that I had a somewhat fucked-up childhood (I mean, I wasn't an orphan forced to become a child soldier but still lol) as these behaviours didn't appear out of nowhere, and Squall's inner monologues and way of seeing things just resonated so much with me, I couldn't believe this guy was the hero that saved the day, despite all his traumas and anxiety... But he was. And he did. And his friends cared for him despite it all. And someone fell in love with him, flaws and all. He realized his way of life wasn't sustainable forever and he just... changed. But he wasn't unlovable. He wasn't irredeemable and broken! I cried so much the first time I finished that game. It felt so fucking unfair, I felt like I'd grown and matured right alongside Squall but as the credits rolled and the tv screen turned black I was met with my reflection; alone, in my room. Where were my friends, where was my Rinoa?
I'm an extremely private person. Sharing deep things about myself is extremely difficult for me and twice now I've come this close to erasing the entirety of this post. I have to fight the voice in my head that says this is irrelevant and useless at best, and dangerous to divulge so much personal info at worst. When I talk about personal things, even to the people closest to me, I start shaking and I feel nauseous and cold all over. Even today, right now as I'm typing this!
But this damn video game made me realize that I would never be happy and at peace if I was never honest and vulnerable. Because when you spend years around someone and know loads of things about them yet they know nothing about you, you're not a friend; you're an acquaintance. To love is to give a person the means to hurt you and trust them not to. You have to take that leap.
I eventually found my friends, and my Rinoa; I'm still having trouble trusting and opening up and relying on others but it got better, and it gets better still, and it's in part because of that. one. video game. Ain't that just crazy? A little bit, probably. Who cares.
I feel this wall of text of a post is all over the place and probably TMI but wow good on you for reading through it all lmao. Am I gonna regret posting this in the morning? Most definitely. But hopefully I have the strenght to leave it up. Hopefully someone somewhere can also relate, like I've related so much to all of your posts on this game! Ultimately I am deeply grateful and amazed by this community, we're the black sheeps, the underdogs, the often ill-understood... But I wouldn't want it any other way.
Happy 25th anniversary, Final Fantasy VIII.

i haven't abandoned this blog or anything, sorry for the unannounced disappearance!
lately i was struggling to really find the energy to sit down and write, && decided since i couldn't, i'd just throw my attention into other things and take a lil break. so i've been playing video games, hanging out with friends, and focusing writing the smaller, less stressful stuff on discord && it helped a lot.
plus, i picked back up learning Japanese & Chinese, as well i'm learning how to draw like i've always wanted. i'm also putting a lot of energy into my waning health; it finally feels like i'm getting somewhere with it too.
basically i've just been focusing on other stuff, doing things that make me happy and it's slowly brought me out of that weird, creative rut i was in.
i should be back to writing starting next week!
miss u guys ♥ i'm available on discord if you wanna chat / plot!
&& if anyone's curious, i've further upgraded my gamer room and i'm healing my inner child. when i tell you the amount of sheer joy i've had since acquiring all this stuff, and how much happier it's made me....

Castlevania Symphony of the Night Part 1: Die Monster!.....in Japanese!!
We’re here folks
We’re finally here
And I’m playing the Japanese version! Why? Well let’s just say that there’s some content that was originally exclusive to the original japanese release which was cut from the international one. Said content was restored in the PSP version....but I decided against playing that. It’s a playable version, but it’s minor yet noticeable graphical downgrades compared to the original just bug me the wrong way
You can already spot a difference in the intro: the actual narrated text is english even in the Jpn version, and no it’s not due to me playing a translated rom, even untranslated it’s in english, just with a japanese voice over
What intrigues me is how the text itself was still largely rewritten in the international versions, yet even the japanese one calls Dracula’s Castle “Castlevania”, which I had always thought was just a quirk of the english localization and not something that was ever truly recognized by the japanese side of things, at least not until the mid 2000s when even the japanese versions started using that name as the series’ title for a time
However, while I can’t understand japanese, I can’t hear the narrator actually pronouncing the name “Castlevania” anywhere, so I’m going to guess that he’s reading from a different script?
Anyway there’s going to be...LOTS to talk about with this game, though luckily we’ll have plenty of parts to do so :)
Just to start off with something that everybody knows by now: this might just be the most beautiful sprite based game of its generation, probably of the whole decade of the 90s
Yeah sure there are a couple of weird imperfections here and there, namely Richter’s sprite still being from RoD instead of reflecting his redesign, except for one cutscene where he IS given an updated sprite (I guess that’s one point in favor of the Saturn version). This is pretty much the game that started the tradition of reusing old enemy sprites, especially guys from Rondo and a couple from Castlevania IV
But honestly? This stuff is barely even a blip on the radar here. Every sprite, every background is so detailed, so well animated, oozing with so much charm! Every enemy has their own unique death animation, there are a billion different animations for the various spells and secret moves, I could list stuff all night!
Alucard’s sprite and animations have entered into the realm of videogame legends now, which is funny because when you think about it his animations are just way too smooth compared to everything else he kinda sticks out, not to mention that the actual running animation looks silly with the way he moves his arms (not that the Belmonts in the previous games weren’t guilty of a similar running animation quirk with their ultra-manly walk cycles), but it’s just so mesmerizing to look at! He truly feels weightless, like some sort of wraith drifting through the night, with that cape, that hair, the after images etc
The funny part is that the game does implement a bunch of more typical PS1 3D effects, which you’d think would clash hard with the sprites and age the game badly but they actually end up giving it even MORE charm, because they’re usually relegated to 3D backgrounds, but the actual renders not only look pretty damn good usually, they actually help make some environments look more memorable and larger than life! The cathedral, the moving clouds, the houses in Olrox’s Quarters. The Magic Tomes that attack you in the Library technically clash so hard with the rest of the place, but the renders themsleves are nice and I fucking love watching them explode into a burst of flames as their letters just spill out from the pages!
I even love the SOUND EFFECTS in this game! I’m pretty sure that most of them are just stock effects, especially the ones for the transformations and whenever you use a potion....but I dunno they’re goofy in a good, charming way to me
And we haven’t even talked about the music! Oh God! I’ll save THAT for the next part!

09/13/23: It was a great day for me today! Both the fleamarket and thrift store had good things. First things I found were two SingStar microphones for $5.00. Then, for $8.00, I got a toy transformer, a bluray, a racing ps3 game, and a mini artbook for Devil May Cry 4. After this, for $7.00, I got a ps1 NASCAR game, a James Bond 007 dvd set, and a Star Wars bluray set. I then found a nice stack of comics and graphic novels on a table. I thought about getting a few, but then realized I can make an offer for everything. So I said how much for everything, guy replied $35. Sure, I'll take them. And as I was leaving his stall, I saw a guy grab some ps3 games. Damn, I missed some. So I went to the tub that he got them from and pulled out two that he missed. Since I got books from him, it looks like he sold me the games cheaper. $3.00 each was excellent. And the last thing I found was Ghost rider dvd for a dollar.
I got lucky at the Salvation Army Store too. Looks like someone overlooked a box full of videogames. On top of them were some dishes and kitchen stuffs. But as I looked through it, I spotted Wii and Wii U games underneath. I dumped the rest in another box and grabbed my little haul. It had plenty of Nintendo goodies in it and also some PS stuff too. Almost all the games have light scratches and fingerprints. But they just need a little TLC and should play right. Plus, some wii accessories and a plug for a mini console. I paid $70 plus tax for the whole lot. Good stuff to make my day.

Do you remember your older oc The Shaker? Not to be insane but he used to be my favorite little (big) guy of yours.
OFC I DO!!! He's my most developed oc to this day! To be honest, I still plan one day to figure out coding and make his concept into a game. Maybe like ps1 graphic style, yknow? BUT YES HE'S MY BEST BOY. ARGUABLY MY BEST OC AND IM GLAD YOU REMEMBER HIM ; ;

New Indie Game Developer Challenge:
Make a game with PS1-inspired graphics that does not involve serial killers, violent murders, slasher elements, bloody horror, spree killings, heavy low-detail gore, a guy in a suit with a knife, extremely loud noises and music stings, a weird looking guy with knife, monster who chases you, monster guy with power tools, and you have to have to use more than one shade of every color.

Man I love FF7s cast, not only because they were probably one of the more well-rounded and developed party members for a jrpg in the 90s but also their designs are just absurd in the best way
You got...
Guy with a gun grafted onto his arm
Talking wolf
Robot cat
Gunslinger vampire
And when you see them all together in modern graphics rather than the very abstract chibi graphics of the ps1 game, that absurdly colorful cast is just so fun to watch

I liked FF7 Remake better than Persona 3 Reloaded Because of What They Changed
Welp, that should get half the internet blindingly furious, but here we go.
So as many of you are well aware, its been a big time for remakes lately. Resident Evil is getting the do-over treatment, Silent Hill 2 is currently getting the once over by Bloober Team (and we may one day forgive them for it,) Dead Space got a new shot of life, and of course Final Fantasy 7 and Persona 3 got the remake and reload respectively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the PS1/PS2 era I played both of these games from beginning to end and loved them both, I consider them focal points for my development as a gamer, writer, and yes even a person.
Tumblr media
Final Fantasy 7 was my first experience as a young kid with a game that had a character I liked outright killed by the game's villain. (Yes I know that Tellah from FF4 got offed, but I never had an SNES as a kid.) The idea that my heroes weren't immortal and that the good guys didn't always win was a pretty big "holy shit" moment for me as a twelve year old kid in 1998.
Meanwhile Persona 3 was my first experience with truly dark storytelling and the idea of supernatural in a modern day setting (FF7 had modern tech, but it clearly wasn't Earth.) Urban fantasy is one of my favorite genres and I place the blame for this solely at Persona's feet.
Tumblr media
So of course when the remakes came out I snapped them both up. I blew through FF7 Remake and despite the mooing of the hardcore fans, I loved it.
Then I got Persona 3 Reload and... after I beat The Hanged Man shadow I just kinda lost interest.
Tumblr media
Yeah, I just had no desire to keep going, and now I'm going to say why.
People complain that FF7 Remake changed a lot of the story, and to be fair it totally did. (SPOILER WARNING BY THE BY!)
New characters, a more nuanced look at life in Midgar, the idea that ShinRa knew full well that Avalanche wanted to blow up the reactors but actually helped them do so because they wanted to use the attacks as an excuse to frame Wu-Tai for the bombings to restart the war... which is just so damn perfect for an evil corporation I just have to applaud it. Excellent addition.
Persona 3 Reload however... well... beyond updated graphics, updated systems, and a few tweaks to the dialogue is the same damn game I played when I was a kid.
Unfortunately... thats the problem.
In Final Fantasy 7 Remake they made a lot of changes to the narrative yes, but that made it INTERESTING to me! It was like getting a new version of the story I already loved!
Whether it was something as fun, campy, and energetic as Cloud doing a dance number with the owner of the Honey Bee Inn to get a makeover to disguise him as a woman...
Tumblr media
... or something as randomly silly as Cloud's gigantic sword getting stuck on a doorframe when he tries to attack a Sepheroth clone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I even liked the Whispers as an addition. As soon as those knockoff dementors showed up I immediately wanted to know more about them.
Tumblr media
The point is, Final Fantasy 7 for me was a mix of what I loved about the old version, and a bunch of new and interesting stuff in a new version!
Persona 3 Reload was... the old version, but a bit fancier with some new mechanics. Otherwise it was the exact same GAME.
Tumblr media
Maybe I'm just weird among gamers, but I really am not huge on going back to retread old ground. Even as big a WoW fan as I am the only time I ever installed WoW Classic was to get the undead proto-dragon mount that they gave you for clearing the Death Knight starting area in Wrath Classic.
Once I complete a game's story or finish the main quest, I want to seek out new adventures. There are very VERY few games I'm okay with playing over and over and over and over and over and over again.
Tumblr media
When it comes to Single Player RPGs like the majority of the Final Fantasy series and Persona however... yeah. By the midway point in Persona 3 Reload I realized I was reciting along with half the dialogue.
Its still a very good game, but its a game I played years ago and believe me that makes a big difference for me.

btw i had a very. weird dream. basically there was a game with ps1-like graphics and it was about this family that needed to survive the night and not end up killed by some. guy?? there was literally no info about him, like whether he was a serial killer or something like that, he was just a weird guy running around with a knife and breaking into people's houses. whoever was playing this game REALLY wanted this family to survive and they've played it multiple times and tried literally everything. in the end, one of the characters (i think it was one of the daughters? most likely the middle one) got tired of other family members trying to come up with these smart and cool tricks and pulled an amane and used the shower head to beat the guy up.
what's interesting is that i don't think this family had any sons, but it had at least three or four daughters and the oldest one died in every playthrough. i even saw this game's FANDOM in my dream and the oldest daughter was often used for memes bc of her being a "loser" and all. there were even some theories too and people analyzed the characters' names and their meanings??

Ya know whats funny? (in a ugh way) The more you think about it the more V9 Trailer Proves they don't pay attention to what they've done in the last volume and neither does Most of the Fandom. Showing a 'Knight' and making it a possibility that its Juane in some form or fashion for RWBY to discover? well that'd be pretty hard since fell after them. Voice saying 'friends she made and lost' ? Well that's gonna be tough to make Juane a surprise of being the possible bad (ik ik) for it if he's the only one who would know about it. Said Voice saying about lessons learned when infact no real lessons were learned other than 'Do crime! It helps you and only you! =D' The 'What are you' part of the trailer just adds annoyance when that wasn't a consideration: She was acting so much like she knew what she was: 'huntsman' ( ' ' for obvious reasons) Girlboss (the bad kind that flunks everything and hurts everyone) Silver eye warrior that seems to have so little importance that no amount of extra cash grabs-sorry 'novels'- could fix the questions that get brought up. (Also alot of people bring up the area looking like PS2 Graphics and i'm like 'bruh even PS1 games had sharper power than this'.)
sorry last part maybe a rant but I had only seen parts of the trailer through images and didn't actually watch until now so its sharp in my mind..
The trailer sadly reminds us over and over again how little CRWBY and fans pay attention to the previous seasons. With the "and lost" portion we think the trailer shows when Weiss tells Ruby at least Penny is gone so that technically can be covered, but if Jaune is a bad guy I am not sure how CRWBY will build that tension with RWBY given they have no idea he fell.
Oh anon, do not get me started on my furious feelings regarding the whole "lessons learned" thing. If the show wants to act like it had the mains learn lessons, the show did jack shit to actually show it. The mains just have the narrative bend backwards to assure the mains they did absolutely nothing wrong and are perfect protagonists. They are not perfect though, they screwed up, a lot. And that isn't a problem anon! It really isn't. It's interesting and character building when characters screw up, the issue is, the narrative pretends their failures and screw ups are not in fact failures and screw ups. The mains will literally retell history to paint themselves in a better light and the fans of the show eat it up and treat it as law rather then being willing to analyze what is happening on screen and have an honest discussion about it, never mind the fact that the characters don't even do that. I could try and guess what the line "lessons learned" refers to but I don't have very high hopes that it will actually be something meaningful.
That is just as confusing a statement to be tossing around. We had no hints even that Ruby and co was questioning their decisions to be huntress's, and if the show is going to toss that in now? Well one I don't believe they will, but two if they are now....I mean it would be long long long overdue lolz. After all the shit they've pulled and lived through it would make sense for them to be questioning their choices but it also feels like it would be way to late to do that to have the same impact you know?
Hey don't apologize anon! I should apologize if I go all over the place I am very tired but I really wanted to reply to this tonight while the trailer was at least somewhat fresh in my mind lolz.

This is also true of other adaptions btw. Squeenix is doing something Entirely Different with FF7 and you can kick and scream as much as you want that it's different from the original game but the guy who made the original game is the same guy making the remake and thus it's his baby and he gets to decide what to do with it.
Do I like the new voice cast? Actively dislike the new Crisis Core cast but I'm mostly neutral on the main game crew outside of Seph who I really do think suffers from the new VA casting. But also it is what it is so I played it and still enjoy it even if I'm sad my original Sephiroth voice is no more. And honestly for the most part with the main crew it's really not their fault, they're coming into it at a disadvantage because the fans are so used to the same crew doing these characters as they've done for years.
Do I like the story changes? Yeah actually, it's setting up for an interesting reveal later on since we're talking about changing fate and whatnot.
And, even if I didn't... I own the original on ps1. I also had a digital copy on my ps4 that I'm assuming will carry over to my ps5 if I want it to, and even if it doesn't I ALSO have a digital copy on my switch because I realized I liked it better handheld. I've beaten it a handful of times at this point. I can just play that if I decide I don't like Rebirth or [Re-dacted]. But I also liked Remake so in theory I'll like the rest 🤷‍♂️
I didn't buy Crisis Core Reunion. I don't like the hair textures on the models. I think Sephiroth's face looks weird. I actively dislike the voice acting I've heard thus far. I think putting high rez models in a game created around low rez technology limitations made it incredibly jarring and ugly when the psuedo-hyperrealistic characters emote like they're directly out of an anime. I think they should have done a full remake if they were going to do things this way and not just a graphics update. I think it's lazy that they just reused the same cg for their special cutscenes like the A/G/S fight and just tweaked it for higher resolution like we wouldn't notice. It's a shame because I was initially excited for it and I even gifted it to my nephew for old times' sake and I currently have no desire to buy it.
Again, I have the original Crisis Core on PSP so if I get the urge to play it I'll just have to charge up my 3000. Easy peasy. An adaption I dislike- made by the parent company and headed by the same person as the original source- and I do not feel the need to force it to fail or to bother those who did like it about how wrong I think they are for liking it. It's really not that hard.

silent Hill 2 thoughts (please no spoilers I just got to an important part with maria/around 3f of the Brookhaven hospital):
- this is a very fun game similar to the first entry and already has a stronger story than game one.
- it is, however, far more sexual/has sexual overtones, so like, don't play this one on a big screen around kids. not that most people do with horror games anyway, but I was a kid who grew up watching horror movies and my family play other horror games (like some of the resident evils) and this would've been too much for me. I think it serves a narrative purpose though & is presented really weirdly/interestingly so this isn't a criticism, just like, if you haven't played it, now you know.
- PS3 version is far buggier than the PS1 silent Hill one, which I find funny, but whatever, I'm gonna play the one I've got, you know. (I've also heard this was due to a lot of development shenanigans, including the studio they had revising the game losing the original build of the PS2 version, but man, it doesn't just look a little worse, this game has crashed on me like twice lmao.)
- the graphics aren't terrible, they certainly don't look better than the PS2 version but are at least comparable.....but even then, neither really match up to the stunning quality of the first game. It still has a lovely and creepy atmosphere, but very genuinely, I can see too much. I don't actually want to see the character's facial expressions, as uncanny as they may be- there was something eerie and charming about the PS1 blurred, smushed-up faces, sharp angles, and dark corners of the world.
- the soundtrack however IS an improvement, building on what works while delivering it through not-ps1 hardware, the haunting melodies and tense ambiences are better than ever.
- most of what I have bad to say about it are simply visual preference or complaints about the specific version I have (the PS3 version also just has shitty load times overall, like traversing the world literally feels like it takes longer in this one than the PS1 game. wtf)
- I do have at least one story nitpick though: I don't care what you have to say about all of the characters being flawed/morally grey, the only fat character (Eddie) being associated with food and emetophobia related horrors is fucked up. he's also depicted as fairly stupid & incurious, in addition to being the star of the few unironically "comedic" moments I've encountered in the game so far. this hardly ruins the game by any stretch but it is something I don't like about it.
- I also ......really like most of the enemy designs but they aren't as scary to me. Idk if it's because I just got used to the design sensibilities of this series or because I can see them better/another visual preference or because they're just not as scary so far. idk. Pyramid head guy IS scary, but not because of how he looks- he may as well be a horny cosplayer from a series I've never heard of. I could see this guy on tiktok. I'm sorry. what's scary about him is the way he moves and how differently he behaves from the other monsters, and how he always seems to be either lurking behind you or one step ahead of you. he kind of just looks like a guy in a funny outfit to me.....maybe it's just because we live in the age of internet horror & this game was likely inspirational to many people, so I'm just kind of, already "oh okay" about seeing that type of guy....
-i don't want anyone to take away "oh mouse HATES silent Hill 2" nooo Im still loving it Im just having a different experience than with the first one. if anything, this game is more compelling story wise AND more player friendly (other than the bugs....but I assume the PS2 original lacks most of whats gone on here). I just really like crunchy and obtuse visuals and I'm coping with the loss of them. why can I see James's face. This is a crime
