Jack Garofalo, Perpignan, 1956.

Costoja. Photo by levilo - Leandre on Flickr.
Costoja, a village of 100 inhabitants in Northern Catalonia, has been considered the town with the most poetic street names.
Where any normal (at least in Europe) town or city would have ordinary names like "shoe makers' street", "[insert more or less relevant historical person] boulevard", or "[name of building that once was there and which has been forgotten by time] square", the street names in Costoja take an unexpected turn.
The town has 77 bilingual street name signs written in Catalan (the local language) and French (the state's language), where you can find names such as:
Escapatòria dels Tenaços Xiuxiuejadors: Tenacious Whisperers' Way Out
Via Crucis dels Somnis Inconfessables: Unspeakable Dreams' Way of the Cross*
Plaçot dels Emprius de Tothom: Common Easements Square.
Atzucac de les Paraules Callades: Hushed Words Cul-de-sac or Unsaid Words Cul-de-sac.
Maquinacions de Xavals i Pubilles en Joguineig: Boys and Girls' Playful Machinations
Lloc del Pou Inoblidable: Place of the Unforgettable Well
Costat de les Ullades cap al Solà: Side of the Glances towards the South
Vaivé dels Pastorets: Little Shepherds' Ups-and-Downs
Tertúlia Ample del Consell dels Antecessors: Wide Get-Together of the Ancestors' Council
Enfonsament de les Mirades Llunyanes: Far-away Glances Descent

*A Way of the Cross (also called Stations of the Cross, Way of Sorrows, or Via Crucis for its name in Latin) is a kind of street present in many countries with a Christian history. It's often uphill, and throughout the street there are 14 steles with reliefs or paintings depicting the 14 stages of Christ's crucifixion day.

IT HAS PRATICALLY NOT RAINED IN 2 FUCKING YEARS IN FRENCH PYRENEES ???????? 😨 holy christ I had no idea it was that bad !!!
the article is in french but here's a translated part to share how bad things are getting there :
"With only 153 millimetres of rain over the last five months, the departement has recorded a precipitation deficit of almost 60%, according to Météo France. This winter drought "worthy of the end of August", according to the public agency, has plunged orchards and vineyards into a state of intense water stress, while groundwater tables are at their lowest. Recent heat records - 25.6°C in Perpignan on February 4 - have not helped matters. During the winter, the trees go into vegetative rest," recalls the winemaker. Except that for an apricot tree to rest, it takes eight hundred hours at less than 8°C. That's a long way off. Without rain within six months, "everything's dead", he prophesies. And that's not an exaggeration: even before these two hot, arid years, the 20,000 hectares of vines in the Pyrénées-Orientales region were in structural crisis, and climate change had already caused yields to plummet."

Hey! I'm wondering - do you know anything about what Lannes' ADCs like Subervie or others might have been like, or if Lannes felt particularly close or had a specific relationship with his ADCs? I know Marbot's memoirs are probably a good source for this, even with his embellishments, but I'm still curious what your views are on the people who would have worked the most closely with Lannes.
Jean-Boy was particularly close to Jacques Subervie; they grew up together, volunteered together, were at the same Mirail camp together, and served under other hometown boys, Joseph Lagrange and Pierre Banel, during their campaign in the Pyrenees-Orientales and then the First Italian campaign. Jacques didn't become Jwan-Boy's ADC until the summer of 1805, and remained with him until he left Spain in late March 1809. Jacques stayed behind. I made the relationship with the ADCs an integral part of the trilogy, with most of them having secondary roles throughout. Unlike most of the marshals, Jean's aides generally stayed with him for the duration.

Albert Gregorius - Portrait of Nicolas Dahlman, Général de brigade - 1814
Nicolas Dahlmann (7 November 1769 – 10 February 1807) was a French cavalry general of the Napoleonic wars.
Dahlmann was born in Thionville as the son of a trumpeter and enlisted in the French Army in 1777 at the age of 8, where his father and older brother were already serving in the Regiment Dauphin Cavalerie, which later in 1791 became the 12e Régiment de Cavalerie.
Dahlmann served with the infantry and was deployed at the Armee de la Moselle and the Armee des Pyrenees Orientales. He was wounded at his right leg at Peyrestortes on 17 September 1793. From 1796 to 1798 he saw action with the Armee d'Italie and joined the Guides-a-Cheval de Bonaparte when they were formed in June 1796.
He went to Egypt with the Armee d'Orient and served at Salahieh and Aboukir. He returned to France with Napoleon in 1798 and became Chef d'Escadron of the Chasseurs-a-Cheval in October 1802. He served at Austerlitz and was promoted Colonel-Major of the Chasseurs-a-Cheval de la Garde Imperiale.
Dahlmann saw further action at the Battle of Jena and was promoted to General-de-Brigade in the age of 36.
Throughout the Battle of Eylau in February 1807 he was attached to the Imperial staff but requested to lead his old unit, the Chasseurs à Cheval, in a cavalry charge on 8 February 1807. He was seriously wounded in his right hip from a heavy calibre artillery piece and died on 10 February 1807 in the manor house of Worienen.
Napoleon granted Dahlmann's widow a pension of 6,000 francs and in 1811 accorded his only son the title of Baron de l'Empire at the age of 10. On the instructions of Napoleon, Dahlmann's heart was embalmed and taken to Paris where it was laid to rest in the Pantheon.
Albert Jacob Frans Gregorius, or Albert Jacques François Grégorius (26 October 1774, Bruges - 25 February 1853, Bruges) was a Flemish-Belgian portrait painter and Director of the art academy in Bruges.

Casa Pams in Perpinyà, Northern Catalonia.
This house was bought in 1852 by Pierre Bardou, founder of the cigarette brand JOB, to build a factory. When he died in 1892, the company had built another factory on the other side of the same street and so his son-in-law decided to make this their family home, rebuilding it in a beautiful and monumental style. Nowadays, Casa Pams is owned by the Perpinyà city hall.
