I like the new type of queer tragedy in storytelling.
I like that the heartbreak isn't death, or disownment, or conversion. I like that we don't see queer characters being robbed of a happy ending because of their queerness. I like that queerness isn't what their story is about.
I like that the heartbreak is miscommunication, or separation, or anything besides death. I like that queer characters aren't robbed of a happy ending and instead have an unhappy second act before their story ends. I like that queerness isn't what the story is about.
They may be fictional, but they feel real. They may be imagined, but the struggles aren't. They may be fantasy, but this time the fantasy is the setting and not just the concept of being queer itself.
They aren't torn apart because of bigotry or fear or hate. Those things don't really matter or exist in the new queer tragedy. They're torn apart by love and its high highs and low lows.
I like that queerness isn't what the new queer tragedy is about.
Cheers to the new less tragic queer tragedy (even if the in-between makes us cry).

I swear to god you all better watch Red White and Royal Blue
I don't care if you don't find it to be deep queer storytelling
It's a rom com! We've been crying for years to get them! And now we have them!
What did you expect?
If anything it's just like a het rom com and that's a good thing!
The sex scene is filmed like a het sex scene.
That's a good thing!
I get that it might not be the queer liberation and depth you want but we need to have movies like this.
Especially if we want ppl to understand that being queer is normal.
Like, yes it sucks, but sometimes you have to feed it bit by bit to ppl to make them understand.
And if you come at them with profound deeply queer storytelling they won't watch it
And come on, it's fun! It's a fun movie!
We can and deserve to have both sorts of storytelling

dude I am SO happy you mentioned the orpheus connection in your last (brilliant) costume meta. I've been saying this! the orpheus parallels between eddie begins and buck's coma are so clear to me (the water! the lightning! chris's voice calling them back!) and I didn't even THINK about the fact that eddie can't look at buck in the hospital. kissing your brain fr (I also can't help but to think of that line from portrait of a lady on fire - the characters are discussing orpheus and the choice to look back or not is described as "the lover's choice or the poet's," and the fact that eddie doesn't look is him is him making the "lover's choice." spiraling) thank you for the truly amazing work that you do!!
Hey Rowan
I'm so happy to have more members of the orpheus parallels club!!!
I hadn't even thought about the connection to Portrait of a lady on fire!!!! Its such a great film - I'm a sucker for a period drama and a beautifully done queer one is so rare that I tend to get over excited by them!! - anyone who hasn't seen it really should watch it! And yes the poets choice or the lovers choice - such an epic line and with so much in it - I think I'll join you in the spiralling further!!

I had a random thought yesterday when thinking about various ttrpgs and it is this:
Our Flag Means Death is basically a Thirsty Sword Lesbians game!
- it’s inherently queer
- the core of the story is relationships, not lore or history (which is also why those don’t matter for why people judge it is good)
- the progress is measured in the emotional development arcs of the characters
And now I really want to try running a TSL game that is OFMD inspired.

For decades we have been told that if we want to see queer/women-led/poc stories on TV, we need to write them ourselves. So, a whole generation of storytellers—writers, showrunners, cast, production, etc.—bravely stepped up and said, "Yes, we will tell these stories, and we will give them the respect they deserve." And the fans supported them! With their time and hard-earned money! The holy grail in the media industry!
But for what? When networks and streaming platforms continue to gatekeep our narratives, we lose no matter what.
At the end of the day, it was never going to be enough to just have people willing to tell our stories, we now have to beg for the opportunity for those stories to be heard.
There has to be something better than this...

Just thought of the parallels between Good Omens Season 2 and queer cinema classics Torch Song Trilogy (1988). Trying to be vague. But it's the inherent lack of certainty to queer love stories where straight romance prizes inevitable destiny and eternity. I could also point to Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Love! Valour! Compassion! (1997), Spoiler Alert (2022), Bros (2022), Naz & Maalik (2015), Moonlight (2016), The Boys In The Band (1970, 2020), Cloudburst (2011), and many other queer films.
Especially where coming out of the closet and possible or real rejection are concerned. But also the reality of relationships between very different people who want different things but are also stubbornly in love with each other despite everything that should be between them. And the reality that is constant work with constant choices that overwhelms people at times.
Naz & Maalik might be the best parallel for the conflict at the end of Good Omens Season 2 because religion and disownment is a direct part of it.
I hope to get into what I mean more directly after Sunday, but if you know you know and I don't want to lose this. Good Omens is so clearly entrenched in the history and styles of queer media. Straight media would not and could not tell this story.

that time i was an advice columnist. I’ve worn many hats and also had a lot of different jobs. I think more jobs than hats which fortunately fit better. Having good hair to fall back is fortunate.

dungeon meshi is soooo fucking great especially when it hits its stride and all characters have come into play bc it's just like
laios: I want to eat all the fucking monsters i want the monsters carnally
marcille: EATING MOSNTERS???? UNHOLY. UNCOUTH. DISGUSTING. anyway here's all the dark magic and necromancy i've got on the backburner to bring back my dragon-digested gf and also i plan to find a way for everyone to live forever at the cost of my very soul if need be
kabru, normally, in a normal tone he's rehearsed 42000 times in front of a mirror: I'M NORMAL. I'M SOOOO FUCKING NORMAL. I'M THE MOST NORMAL GUY AROUND AND I'M NOT CONSTANTLY PLOTTING ASSASSINATIONS FOR THE GREATER GOOD
senshi: I have all this trauma abt being the sole survivor of the fantasy equivalent of the franklin expedition but that's not important what really matters here is eat yer goddamn veggies or so help me
and the best part is that none of them are straight

Using vampirism as an allegory for experiencing trauma and moving forward forever changed really makes writing far more fulfilling for me. This is why I love playing in horror! ✨️

isn't the first time 'm in a fandom were the sun/moon parallel exist, and sometimes i hc them like siblings (like with the daycare attendant) and sometimes like lovers (like with Wukong and Mac). Now, I see them like sibling 'cause i relate them a lot with Celestia and Luna from MLP, but if you want to think about them as a couple, go for it! I'm nobody to tell you work to work a Hc.
But yeah, is you're hoping to see some of this ship in my draws/au, go look elsewhere, 'cause it not my cup of tea.

Guau, ella es bisexual, i didn’t know that!
Vico and Fátima being little disasters, as usual. In ENG and SPA of course, tho imho the dialogue is always a little funnier in Spanish B^]
Imagine Fatima’s surprise when seeing that the captain of the baseball team from her old high school, is now being cunty at the supermarket???? The nerve. The audacity.
In reverse, imagine the horror of being openly queer but NOT knowing if the girl you’re interested in is Aware or even remotely Okay with your
💖gender thing.💖 How to even begin to explain???

devastating to go into the tag for an obscure vampire movie I've been quietly obsessed with for years to find mostly gifsets of minor characters (played by big-name actors) and review blogs saying they didn't like it :(
@ everyone who made a post saying "I liked it :)" I am blowing you a kiss. everyone who made a lovely gifset or photoset of the cinematography I am tipping my hat. that one poster that said "bro did y'all just miss the Entire Message about class and race or???" I am shaking your hand with enthusiasm there was SUCH a message about class and race
anyway everybody should watch Night Teeth and revel in glitzy flashy modern vampires in LA with me
